• Django, javascript and code reuse problem

  Hi, I have some sort of a design problem with my Django AJAX application. I have a template where I initialize js variable from django context variable like so: var test = "{{ test }}"; This variable is than used in a number of js functions that are needed for interface to work properly. So now I'm trying to reuse some content from this page in another page that loads it dynamically on some user interaction using jQuery.load(..), and I don't see any way how I can initialize that variable, so js functions don't work now. Is there any solution for this or may be I'm doing it wrong? Thanks.

• Workaround for floats in DOMPDF

  DOMPDF does not support floats. However I am listing many tables, and they are mainly key & value pairs. I would like 2 of these tables to appear side by side. i.e. if I could use floats HTML <table id="stuff"> ... </table> <table id="other-stuff"> ... </table> CSS table#stuff { float: left; } table#other-stuff { float: right; } What sort of workaround can I do to support this? Or is it impossible?

• Using the Module Pattern for larger projects

  I'm interested in using the Module Pattern to better organize my future projects. Unfortunately, there are only a few brief tutorials and proof-of-concept examples of the Module Pattern. Using the module pattern, I would like to organize projects into this sort of structure: project.arm.object.method(); Where "project" is my global project name, "arm" is a sub-section or branch of the project, "object" is an individual object, and so on to the methods and properties. However, I'm not sure how I should be declaring and organizing multiple "arms" and "objects" under "project". var project = window.project || {}; project.arm = project.arm || {}; project.arm.object = (function() { var privateVar = "Private contents."; function privateMethod() { alert(privateVar); } return { method: privateMethod }; }()); Are there any best practices or conventions when defining a complex module structure? • Repeater ItemDataBound Complete Trigger

  Hi I have a Repeater and I am doing various things during the ItemDataBound event. My Repeater is in a control. What I am noticing is that the things that are supposed to happen in the ItemDataBound event happen after the Page_Load of the page hosting the control. Is there a way to use some sort of ItemDataBoundComplete trigger so I can do other things on my page after the events of the ItemDataBound have taken place? [Edit] I have controls that are being bound to the ItemDataBound and they are not available until after the Page_Load for the page hosting the control. [Solution] (In my case): In my page I used the following: Control.Page.LoadComplete += new EventHandler(Control_LoadComplete); Then I performed what I had to do in that event.

• GEdit/Python execution plugin?

  Hi I'm just starting out learning python with GEdit plus various plugins as my IDE. Visual Studio/F# has a feature which permits the highlighting on a piece of text in the code window which then, on a keypress, gets executed in the F# console. Is there a similar facility/plugin which would enable this sort of behaviour for GEdit/Python? I do have various execution type plugins (Run In Python,Better Python Console) but they don't give me this particular behaviour - or at least I'm not sure how to configure them to give me this. I find it useful because in learning python, I have some test code I want to execute particular individual lines or small segments of code (rather then a complete file) to try and understand what they are doing (and the copy/paste can get a bit tiresome) ... or perhaps there is a better way to do code exploration? • Save downloaded content when in app purchase is complete

  Hello experts! I have created an app which allows users to buy non-consumable content. The retrieving-ids-payment-process works like a charm. What i can't really figure out is how my content should be saved into the phone. The existing structure is that I have all my current content in Resources/packages/. For every package there is an matching entry in a package.plist. When the purchase is complete it is time to download the content from the server. What i retrieve from the server is a zip file with the new package that I have bought. My observer will call a method named provideContent: -(void) provideContent: (NSString*) productIdentifier { In here I will call my server and download the package } What i need from you guys is some sort of step by step walkthrough or tutorial of how, when the zip is retrieved(is zip allowed?), unpack this zip and add it to my current package structure.   How do we repair this? This question has been sort of addressed many times around the internet, but it's always a workaround. Always copying the MySql.data.dll into your bin directory, or explicitly stating what version you want. What is the "proper" approach to using DbProvderFactory for MySQL with ASP.NET? I'd like to be able to develop locally and not worry what version they have installed on the server. As it stands, if I do copy up my own version I have to make sure it's the one they use. Seems easy to break.

  Hi, I'm currently working on a Datawarehouse project using an Oracle Database, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Warehouse Builder and some Jython thrown in for good measure. All of which is held within TFS. My background is .net and prior to this project was seeing a lot of promise in CI. I'm not suggesting that the testing element of CI is feasible in this instance, but I would like to implement a stable deployment strategy. What I'm trying to understand is whether or not I can build some NANT scripts that will allow me to deploy ODI\OWB\Oracle DB code to any given environment at any point. Has anyone tried this before? Are there more appropriate tools out there that lends themselves better to this sort of toolset? Am I just a crazy horse to be evening contemplating this? Any view would be greatly appreciated. I have two large vectors, I am trying to do some sort of element multiplication, where an even-numbered element in the first vector is multiplied by the next odd-numbered element in the second vector .... and where the odd-numbered element in the first vector is multiplied by the preceding even-numbered element in the second vector Ex. vector 1 is V1(1) V1(2) V1(3) V1(4) vector 2 is V2(1) V2(2) V2(3) V2(4) V1(1) * V2(2) V1(3) * V2(4) V1(2) * V2(1) V1(4) * V2(3) I have written a Cuda code to do this: (Pds has the elements of the first vector in shared memory, Nds the second Vector) //instead of using %2 .. i check for the first bit to decide if number is odd/even -- faster if ((tx & 0x0001) == 0x0000) Nds[tx+1] = Pds[tx] * Nds[tx+1]; else Nds[tx-1] = Pds[tx] * Nds[tx-1]; __syncthreads(); Is there anyway to further accelerate this code or avoid divergence ? • Integrating Jython Cpython

  I am about to begin a project where I will likely use PyQt or Pyside. I will need to interface with a buggy 3rd party piece of server software that provides C++ and Java APIs. The Java APIs are a lot easier to use because you get Exceptions where with the C++ libraries you get segfaults. Also, the Python bindings to the Java APIs are automatic with Jython whereas the Python bindings for the C++ APIs don't exist. So, how would a CPython PyQt client application be able to communicate with these Java APIs? How would you go about it? Would you have another separate Java process on the client that serializes / pickles objects and communicates with the PyQt process over a socket? I don't want to re-invent the wheel... is there some sort of standard interface for these types of things? Some technology I should look into? RPC, Corba, etc? Thanks, ~Eric

• Global variable life in Javascript - destroyed on a reload?

  (I am learning Javascript) Problem: A page I am working on has 2 views, a data entry view with a textbox and a data rendering view. There is a a href src="currentpage#" link that switches between the 2 views. In order to transmit data from view to view, the javascript parses it from the current HTML and pushes it into the correct form for the other view. This is ugly and I want to refactor it out, ideally into some sort of global where it can be neatly rendered down into the view on command (I'm refactoring the code base to a point where I can AJAX it from a server). However, I am not certain about scoping rules and variable life in JS.

• Checking that all libs and dlls are from the same build?

  I am developing a program in VS C++ 2008. Right now, I have a huge list of dll and lib dependencies and I am adding some more. I worry that when I need to update a dependency by building from source (where I have to manually replace built dlls and libs in the correct place), if I accidently forgot to replace something or vice versa, I may run into a compile and/or runtime problem. And finding which place goes wrong can be a bit difficult. So is there some sort of program or method out there that can suit this task to ease building a program with many updating dependencies?

  This question expands upon the one at abstract-class-numberformat-very-confused-about-getinstance. I feel that this question is different enough to merit being asked on its own. In the answers to that question, it was stated that a code statement such as NumberFormat en = NumberFormat.getInstance(Locale.US); returns an object that is a subclass of the java.text.NumberFormat class. It makes sense to me why the return type can't be just an instance of NumberFormat since that is an abstract class. Rather, it was stated that the returned object is at least an instance of NumberFormat, but actually something else. My question is this: what specifically is the class of the object that is returned? In the Sun documentation the only subclasses I see are ChoicesFormat and DecimalFormat. Is there some sort of behind the scenes compiler voodoo going on here? Thanks in advance!

• Safety of Amazon Community AMIs

  Hi, I am working for a scientific project and would like to use the Amazon EC2 to host the same. Now, I was going through the existing AMIs to create my own, but I found one AMI in the community list of AMIs - which fits perfectly. My question is the following - are the community AMIs safe? Is it possible for a malicious user to create an AMI in such a way that say the usernames/passwords etc can be sent to a remote server or something? Does Amazon do any sort of checking to make sure it cannot happen? I couldnt find the answers to these in Amazon site. I am pretty sure that you guys would have felt the same issues - could you please provide your answers? Regards K

I have an array named 'names' with strings looking like this: ["name_23_something", "name_25_something", "name_2_something"]; Now I would like to sort this array in ascending order so it looks like this: ["name_25_something", "name_23_something", "name_2_something"]; I guess that should start of with extracting the numbers since I want that the sorting is done by them: for(NSString *name in arr) { NSArray *nameSegments = [name componentsSeparatedByString:@"_"]; NSLog("number: %@", (NSString*)[nameSegments objectAtIndex:1]); } I'm thinking of creating a dictionary with the keys but I'm not sure if that is the correct objective-c way, maybe there some some methods I could use instead? • Sorting MySQL results within a resultset

  I have a resultset of lets say 10 results. 3 of them have a type 'Pears', and the next 3 have a type 'Apples' and the next three have a type of 'Bananas'. The last record has a type of 'Squeezing Equipment' - unrelated to the fruits. How do I return this set of results (for pagination too) in a GROUPED order that I specify WITHOUT using any inherent sort factor like ALPHABETA or ID etc? I have the all types at my disposal before running the code so they can be specified. i.e. ID | Bananas ID | Bananas ID | Bananas ID | Apples ID | Apples ID | Apples ID | Pears ID | Pears ID | Pears ID | Squeezing Equipment

• Are we in a functional programming fad?

  I use both functional and imperative languages daily, and it's rather amusing to see the surge of adoption of functional languages from both sides of the fence. It strikes me, however, that it looks rather like a fad. Do you think that it's a fad? I know the reasons for using functional languages at times and imperative languages in others, but do you really think that this trend will continue due to the cliched "many-core" revolution that has been only "18 months from now" since 2004 (sort of like communism's Radiant Future), or do you think that it's only temporary; a fascination of the mainstream developer that will be quickly replaced by the next shiny idea, like Web 3.0 or GPGPU? Note, that I'm not trying to start a flamewar or anything (sorry if it sounds bitter), I'm just curious as to whether people will think functional or functional/imperative languages will become mainstream. Edit: By mainstream, I mean, equal number of programmers to say, Python, Java, C#, etc

• Any ideas on how to implement a 'touchMoveOver' event in Javascript?

  I'm faffing around with SVG, specifically for web content aimed at iPad users. I've created a little dial type thingy that I'm calling a "cheese board" that I'd like to use as an interface element. http://appliedworks.co.uk/files/times/SVGTests/raphael.html Clicking on a piece of cheese (to keep the analogy going) will do "something". That bit's easy. However, I'd like the user to be able to drag their finger around the 'cheese board', firing a new event (touchesMovedOver?) every time they their finger moves over a new piece of cheese. But I can't figure out how to do it since there's no 'mouseOver' equivalent for touch interfaces. If the whole thing was made of squares, I could have created some sort of 'rectContainsPoint' method to be called for every 'touchesMoved', but that approach wouldn't work here. If anyone has any idea about how something like this could be achieved, I'd love to hear it.

  Hi there, Im using entity framework 1.0 and trying to feed out a Gridview with a objectdatasource that have access to my facade. The problem is, that it seems to be particulary difficult and haven't seen anything that realy do what i want it to do on the internet. For those who know, a gridview feeded with an objectdatasource, it can't sort automaticaly then you must do it manually. It's not that bad. Where it becomes a nightmare, its when we add paging and filter settings to a gridview's datasource. After many hours searching on the internet, i'm asking you, guys, if anyone knows a link that can explain me how to mix Pagging, Sorting and filtering for a gridview and an objectdatasource! • Calling a method with an instance of derived class of derived generic type

  Okay, so I have classes class B<T> : A<T> class L : K and a method void Method(A<K> a) {...} What I would like to do is this b = new B<L>(); Method(b); //error But it is not possible to b to the correct type. Indeed it is not possible to make this cast A<K> t = new A<L>(); //error I would really like to not have to change the internals of Method. I have no problems making changes to B and/or L. Do I have any options for making some sort of workaround? I guess it should be possible for Method to execute all of its method calls etc. on b, since B derives from A and L derives from K?

• JSON to Persistent Data Store (CoreData, etc.)

  All of the data on my application is pulled through an API via JSON. The nature of a good percentage of this data is that it doesn't change very often. So to go and make JSON requests to get a list of data that doesn't change much didn't seem all that appealing. I'm looking for the most sensible option to have this JSON saved onto the iPhone in some sort of persistent data store. Obviously one plus of persisting the data would be to provide it when the phone can't access the API. I've looked at a few examples of having JSON and CoreData interact, for example, but it seems that they only describe transforming NSManagedObjects into JSON. If I can transform JSON into CoreData, my only problem would be being able to change that data when the data from the API does change. (Or, maybe this is all just silly.)

• Deselecting a form input and waiting for a function before submitting

  I have a form with an input field where a user enters a unique identifier. I then have some jQuery code that upon the user moving away from the input field (blur) goes out and fetches details about the part and populates some fields on the page. The problem is if the user clicks the submit button before moving out of the input field the jQuery code never has a chance to load in the data and populate the necessary fields. Whats the best way to go about doing this? I thought about maybe setting the focus to body and then having an infinite loop that keeps checking the page until all fields that should be filled in have been filled in but I feel like some sort of event based solution would be better than unpredictable infinite loops. Any ideas?
