  • How to calibrate Toshiba LED screen - the colours are over saturated

    I have purchased a new Toshiba Satellite C850-A812 laptop, with ATI Radeon HD 75xx series. When i first installed Ubuntu 12.04.1, the open source driver worked like a charm with the colors, i mean the colors were so vivid. However after installing the ATI proprietary driver from the repos, the colors went too "whity" and too bright. I even installed the updated driver, and went further to download the latest driver from ATI and install it in vain. I tried to use the ubuntu build in calibration tool, but it keeps on asking me to enter the ICC profile before i proceed to calibrate. I played with the catalyst control center, tried everything possible, but still the colors are still wayyyyyyyyy over exposed. Please advice :)

    On my Thinkpad X220 Tablet the touch-finger works flawlessly but the pen is terribly miscalibrated. The calibration tool in System settings - Wacom tablet does not work. Instead, whenever I wan't to use the pen I first need to sudo xsetwacom set 'Wacom ISDv4 E6 Pen stylus' Area 0 0 27760 15690 These changes do not remain permanent. That is, after every reboot they are gone. How can I make the change permanent - I'm not looking for a startup scrip, I'd like to set the right area once for all. Any idea?

  • iPhone, No Garbage Collection: What About MonoTouch?

    It's well known that Apple does not provide automatic garbage collection on the iPhone to prolong battery life. Yet MonoTouch apps, which reportedly run perfectly on the iPhone (and many are sold through the AppStore, therefore are approved by Apple), do have automatic garbage collection. Is this automatic garbage collection, or does MonoTouch merely manage all the retain/release stuff for you? If it is automatic garbage collection, wouldn't that be a drain on battery? Edit: If your answer to #1 is "yes" and your answer to #2 is "no," why?

    In my code I have: Dim ps as PowerStatus = SystemInformation.PowerStatus Dim batteryTimeLeft as Integer = ps.BatteryLifeRemaining 'I have a problem here MsgBox("Time left on battery: " & cstr(batteryTimeLeft),vbInformation,"Info") PowerStatus.BatteryLifeRemaining always returns -1 when I have a battery present and used or when not used. Why does this always return -1? I currently am using MS .NET 4.0 Client Profile on VB.NET 2010 Express. I unplug the for my laptop and see if it makes a difference and it doesn't. Also tried in plugged in. Help please???

  • Ubuntu makes noise and heat when AC charger is inserted

    I have an issue with heat and noise on my laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 installed. The thing is that when I have the AC charger plugged into the laptop, it automatically goes to "boost mode" or something. And when the laptop is on battery mode, the heat and noise is reduced shortly. I want the laptop to be on battery mode as general and "boost mode" as an option if more power is needed. Any solutions? I have installed tlp that doesn't seen to have any effect.

  • Emulator batteryService not working

    So i've got a 1.6 emulator running. I have a receiver with action power connected and disconnected filters. when i connect to the emulator through telnet and issue the power ac on or power ac off command, logcat shows: 01-11 21:33:01.096: ERROR/BatteryService(67): Could not open '/sys/class/power_supply/usb/online' 01-11 21:33:01.104: ERROR/BatteryService(67): Could not open '/sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_vol' 01-11 21:33:01.104: ERROR/BatteryService(67): Could not open '/sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_temp' and my receiver does not get activated. It was working just fine yesterday and now it does not. I tried reinstalling the AVD, and also deleted and reinstalled the SDK from the SDK manager. Works fine in my 2.2 emulator. Any ideas?

  • How do I set the encoding statement in the XML declaration when performing an XSL transformation usi

    I wrote a simple package installer in WinBatch that needs to update an XML file with information about the package contents. My first stab at it involved loading the file with Msxml2.DOMDocument, adding nodes and data as required, then saving the data back to disk. This worked well enough, except that it would not create tab and CR/LF whitespace in the new data. The solution I came up with was writing an XSL stylesheet that would recreate the XML file with whitespace added back in. I'm doing this by: loading the XSL file into an Msxml2.FreeThreadedDOMDocument object setting that object as the stylesheet property of an Msxml2.XSLTemplate object creating an XSL processor via Msxml2.XSLTemplate.createProcessor() setting my original Msxml2.DOMDocument as the input property of the XSL processor Calling transform() method of the XSL processor, and saving the output to a file. This works as for as reformatting the XML file with tabs and carriage returns, but my XML declaration comes out either as <?xml version="1.0"?> or <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?> depending on whether I used Msxml2.*.6.0 or Msxml2.* objects (a fall back if the system doesn't have 6.0). If the encoding is set to UTF-16, Msxml12.DOMDocument complains about trying to convert UTF-16 to 1-byte encoding the next time I run my package installer. I've tried creating and adding an XML declaration using both createProcessingInstruction() to both the XML and XSL DOM objects, but neither one seems to affect the output of the XSLTemplate processor. I've also set encoding to UTF-8 in the <xsl:output/> tag in my XSL file.   • Turn Non-Resizeable Windows into Rezieable Windows

    Are you frustrated with Windows app windows that can not be resized at all? Now you can apply some “attitude adjustment” and resize those windows with ResizeEnable. Before Everyone is familiar with the many app windows in their Windows OS that simply can not be resized. What you need is cooperation, not attitude. For our example we chose the “Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Window”…notice the cursor in the lower right corner. No resizing satisfaction available at all… After The program comes in a zip file with three files as shown here. Once you have unzipped the program place it in an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, create a shortcut, and you are ready to go. There will be a “System Tray Icon” with only two “Context Menu” items…“About & Quit”. Here is a quick look at the “About Window” that tells you exactly what ResizeEnable does. Notice that it does state that you may occasionally have a window that may not respond correctly. Now back to our “Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Window”. Notice the resizing cursor in the lower right corner….time for some fun! During our test the “Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Window” was suddenly a dream to resize. Daring to stretch the window even further…now that is what you call “stretching” the window out in comparison to its’ original size! Think of all the windows that will be much easier to work with now… Conclusion If you have been frustrated with non-resizeable windows then ResizeEnable will certainly bring a smile to your face as you watch those windows suddenly become a lot more cooperative. This is definitely one app that is worth adding to your system.   • Internet Explorer 9 RC Now Available: Here’s the Most Interesting New Stuff

    Yesterday Microsoft announced the release candidate of Internet Explorer 9, which is very close to the final product. Here’s a screenshot tour of the most interesting new stuff, as well as answers to your questions. The most important question is should you install this version? And the answer is absolutely yes. Even if you don’t use IE, it’s better to have a newer, more secure version on your PC. What’s New Under the Hood in Release Candidate vs Beta? If you want to see the full list of changes with all the original marketing detail, you can read Microsoft’s Beauty of the Web page, but here’s the highlights that you might be interested in. Improved Performance – they’ve made a lot of changes, and it really feels faster, especially when using more intensive web apps like Gmail. Power Consumption Settings – since the JavaScript engine in any browser uses a lot of CPU power, they’ve now integrated it into the power settings, so if you’re on battery it will use less CPU, and save battery life. This is really a great change. UI Changes – The tab bar can now be moved below the address bar (see below for more), they’ve shaved some pixels off the design to save space, and now you can toggle the Menu bar to be always on. Pinned Sites – now you can pin multiple pages to a single taskbar button. Very useful if you always use a couple web apps together. You can also pin a site in InPrivate mode. FlashBlock and AdBlock are Integrated (sorta) – there’s a new ActiveX filtering that lets you enable plug-ins only for sites you trust. There’s also a tracking protection list that can block certain content (which can obviously be used to block ads).   • Ubuntu 11.10 - can't adjust brightness on my laptop

    Using every method possible I'm unable to change my laptop brightness.. It's stuck on super max brightness.. Using the slider in the "screens" window int he control panel doesnt do anything, and using the fn keys doesn't do anything... Some info about my system: laptop is a MSI VR420 Running ubuntu 11.10 video card is an integrated intel card Used to work when I ran ubuntu 10.10 and earlier versions (not sure if it worked out of the box or if I inadvertly fixed it in previous versions while installing lots of other packages) Brightness slider on the "screen" window doesn't do anything, "dim when on battery -power" doesnt do anything When I use the fn+f4/f5 keys to adjust brightness there is a popup showing that its receving the input, but i can only go from between 0 brightness and max brightness.. (that is what the output is showing, the brightness does not change though) when attempting to change the brightness with fn+f4/f5 my dmesg log reports "ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness" Here are some outputs from some terminal commands, not sure if any of this is useful or not.. lspci - http://pastebin.com/EimZSGs3 "ls /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness" will output "/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" "cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" = 0 (when I use the fn+f4/f5) this will change betwene 0 and, but the actual brightness doesn't change) "cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness" = 1 "lsmod | grep ^i915" = i915 505108 3 here is the list of things I've tried through searching google..... Edit /etc/default/grub?GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT: acpi_osi=Linux, acpi_backlight=vendor, nomodeset. (as well as several different combinations of these settings being on or off) Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (file doesn't exist on my system) Edit /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness (file doesn't exist) sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=XX (does nothing) xbacklight -set XX (does nothing) I've tried about everything with no luck... The only thing i haven't tried is adding the ppa that someone suggested here: Unable to change brightness in a Lenovo laptop .... However according to the notes on the ppa.. all of the changes that are in the ppa are now actually apart of 11.10 and the ppa is only for people with 11.04.. Does anyone have any ideas for me? edit:by setting acpi=off in my /etc/default/grub file I was about to get my fn+f4/f5 keys to work, also "dim when display to save power" now makes my laptop dim when on battery power.. the dimness slider however still doesn't do anything.. also xbacklight doesn't do anything stil or any of the other methods... The thing i don't get is why setting acpi=off makes my fn+f4/f5 keys work? Isn't acpi supposed to be enables the backlight to be dimmed? does anyone know what ubuntu is deciding to do behind the scenes when acpi=off? Does anyone know what/if any features I might be losing with it off?

    Core parking is a new feature that introduced in Windows 7 to get better Battery performance . Depending on the resource use of the operating system it may park one or multiple cores of a multi-core cpu to reduce the computer’s power consumption and thermal emissions. Once operations require more processing power, the parked cores are activated again to assist in the tasks So my question is that is there any way i can do it on Ubuntu 12.04 " Core Parking " ?

  • Error "fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed"

    I am trying to install ubuntu for the first time. (long time windows user, first time linux!) Version = 11.04 Hardware = Acer Travelmate 4050 I can boot from USB or CD and it loads fine I have installed and reinstalled several times from both USB and CD and it completes correctly However, when I boot from the HDD I get the above error I don't see any errors like "kernel panic" mentioned elsewhere It happens whether I boot with AC adapter in or out and also with adapter in but battery out Not sure how to get further info to help with diagnosis Suggestions?

    I've noticed an error from dmesg output that ubuntu canot enable ASPM: [ 0.192722] pci0000:00: ACPI _OSC support notification failed, disabling PCIe ASPM [ 0.192728] pci0000:00: Unable to request _OSC control (_OSC support mask: 0x08) While I know that this is not a bug, I'd like to ask if there is a way to correct it and enable ASPM, the reason being that it should increase battery life (powertop shows that PCIe is always 100% on). Edit: I am running on an ASUS eee pc 1015px with the latest bios version (1401)

  • Monitor won't enter power save mode

    My LCD monitor won't enter power save mode. I've gone into System ? Preferences ? Screensaver, clicked Power Management, then set Put display to sleep when inactive for: to 10 minutes (for both On AC Power and On Battery Power), but the monitor still doesn't enter power save mode, even after an hour. Anyone have ideas on what to try? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS 64-bit desktop on a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop.

  • Ubuntu won't suspend automatically any more

    In the last month or so, Ubuntu (12.04) has stopped sleeping automatically. I've gone to System Settings Power, and verified (and toggled) "suspend on inactive for" to 5 minutes (for both battery and "when plugged in"), but the system stays awake. I've also tried used code similar to $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac-timeout 300 $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-battery-timeout 300 to set the timeout values. I've also verified these in dconf Editor. Previously, I could set this quite low to make my computer sleep quickly, but now it no longer works either. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but under old versions of Ubuntu, if I wanted my computer to never suspend (via the CLI), I would also have to set $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac false At some point, this seemed to have been depreciated (and also gave me the error "No such key 'sleep-inactive-ac'"). I found that it it was enough to set sleep-inactive-ac-timeout to 0. This worked for a while, but at some point auto-suspend stopped working as stated above. Oddly enough, the sleep-inactive-ac key is still present when I look via dconf editor. However, when I click it, it says "no schema", and the summary, etc. fields are blank. To test if the dconf power plugin was working, I tried playing around with other settings in the schema. Idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work as expected . However, setting sleep-display-ac to 5 seconds has no effect. I'm also not sure if this is relevant, but I've uninstalled gnome-screensaver, and installed xscreensaver. I have tried killing xscreensaver and re-installing gnome-screensaver, but this did not help. I've also had some trouble with DPMS. I'm not sure if this is related, but I'll put the information here, just in case. Using xscreensaver, I set Power Management to enabled, with standby and suspend timeouts to 10 minutes. I've verified these settings in ~/.xscreensaver and xset q. However, the screen blanks after about 30 seconds. If I turn off DPMS (either via xscreensaver GUI or modifying ~/.xscreensaver), it won't blank at all, so I know that DPMS is partially reading the xscreensaver settings. -- edit I've attempted more troubleshooting, by creating a new user account, then logging out of the main account and into the new account. I've tried modifying the timeouts via dconf, but get the same results as above (i.e. it doesn't work, nor does sleep-display-ac, but idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work). Also, the depreciated sleep-display-ac key is not visible, so I think that this is probably unrelated. -- edit I've since moved to gnome-shell instead of unity, and still have this problem, so I guess that it's something to do with gnome-power-manager.
