• How to recover from broken file?

  Hello I have a broken file. It was encrypted(by me) and I did get it unencrypted though I can not remember if it is tar or tar.gz. I believe whichever one it is though is corrupted. I've tried both methods and everything else I could think of for what kind of archive format it could be(7z, zip, etc) and it errors out. What is a possible course of action to take here? The files on it are not extremely important though they are irreplaceable. Are there any tools out there for "fixing" tar or tar.gz formats?

I took the fault module (hostv32.dll) and scanned it with avast but it found no threat. I also ran a SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt and it didn't find any corrupted files. This problem is in all two user accounts in this computer (Windows 7). There was one time where task manager seemed to work, but when I closed it and opened it again, it crashed. Any reason/solution to this problem?

  On a Windows 7 64-bit desktop, there is a program on the Programs and Features list (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features) that refused to uninstall. The error obtained is: Error 1723. There is a problem with this Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run I suspect filer were deleted or corrupted. The big problem is that the program refused to install itself over the broken version. So how to I manually clean up the list of installed program?

  My system is running on a pc with C:\ Drive out of space. So I tried to delete some file and clean up to get more space. I found that the %Temp% {C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp} takes lots of space and tried to delete files in it. But when I open it , it alerted me with the message C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp is not accessible The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable? What to do? Is deleting files from Temp harmful to computer?

• Word 2007 "Out of Memory or Disk Space" Error on launch.

  Word 2007 is installed on a Vista Home Premium machine and whenever it starts up it opens what appears to be a dynamic installer to do something and then throws up the "Out of Memory or Disk Space" error. Word 2007 never completes starting up. Reinstalling Word hasn't helped and if I can avoid reinstalling Windows until Windows 7 is released and get Word working in the mean time, that would be ideal. I've been looking around for a solution, once of which seemed to point to a problem with the user account. I created a second user on the machine and Word still had the same problem. The other solution that seems possible is a corrupted normal.dot/normal.dotm file. However, even in the location it should be, I can't seem to find it. Am I going in the right direction with this? Is there another solution I haven't come across that will fix this? If it is possible that renaming normal.dot/normal.dotm how can I find it?

• Issue with emails with attached emails.

  There is this problem with our email in my organisation that happens to some people. When a remote sender sends an email that has an attached email, the reciever gets the email but the attached email is blank. The recieving mail server is MDaemon Pro. I also notice that the email header could be corrupted. I checked the MDaemon KB and find nothing regarding this issue. but I also highly doubt that this is an MS Outlook 2007 issue. Anyone have any ideas? Putting this issue aside, I feel that we really should not attach emails to emails. There is a reason for the "Forward" button. I can't understand why is it so difficult for them to just forward that email instead of drag and drop one into the other using outlook. Furthermore, if the attached email also has its own attachments, the resulting nesting will be quite unbearable. Don't you think so?

• How do I use memmap to reserve memory on boot?

  Ive got a laptop with some corrupted ram addresses, so I'm trying to use memmap to reserve them before linux boots up. Ive been trying to use memmap=10M$1024M' as a kernel boot option, but linux crashes (with no errors) and restarts. If I use a different syntax for memmap likememmap=1023M@0M` it boots fine. Do I have to specify a certain size block to reserve or could my kernel version not support reserving memory with memmap? Maybe I'm better off using memmap=exactmap, and if so, could somebody point me to a good faq on how to use it?

• reg delete gives me "access is denied" but regedit delete is ok

  I need to delete a key from a command line. So I wanted to use reg delete "the key to be deleted" /f but I get ERROR: access is denied. From the same login session (the same user) I am able to delete the key without any troubles from regedit.exe that is not run as administrator. I cannot use runas command to execute reg that I believe would be to solution because in fact I want to use reg to delete registry entry for administrator profile so runas works again.   On my win7 machine when I watch a movie in XBMC, once per hour the desktop regains the focus. The movie keeps playing, but in the background now, so I can only hear it. It is quite irritating. I noticed, that the Windows Application log always contains two entres for this time: "The description for Event ID 0 from source Self-service Plug-in cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer." One entry is for starting, and one for stopping 60 seconds later. This keeps repeating, every two starts 3600 seconds apart. How can I repair it? How can I find out which service it is?

• frequent errors with subversion repository on fat32 on USB memory stick

  I keep a copy of a Subversion Repository on a USB memory stick that is formatted with FAT32. I am using TortoiseSVN on XP and command line svn 1.6.x on Ubuntu and OSX with this memory stick. I notice that I need to do an svn cleanup just about every time or updates and commits will not work. I routinely have errors with .lock and *.svn/text-base/** files getting corrupted. Errors tend to be parameter is incorrect or lock file can not be read Sometimes svn cleanup works and sometimes chflags -R nouchg * Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

• Folders disappear every timeWindows XP starts up

  Whenever my Windows XP machine starts up, subfolders disappear from the first top-level folder, listed alphabetically (eg. from "C:\AA Backups"). The first time it happened I suspected user error (such as an unintentional delete or copy). But I then found it happens on every start-up, sometimes affecting huge numbers of files. Renaming the affected folder (eg to "ZZ Backups") just means that a different folder is affected the next time. Avast found no virus or malware that would seem to be responsible. The missing files are not visible to an undelete utility such as NTFSUndelete. Running "chkdsk/f" found no problems and did not fix the problem. File permissions also appear corrupted - a few files which should be accessible are missing "read" permission. What's happened to this machine?? Any ideas or reports of similar experiences would be most welcome.

  Yesterday I found a corrupted file in my external usb drive. Since I am using the drive quite often (I am running my vms over there) I decided to run the chkdsk on it This is the result 488384000 KB of total space on disk. 351202364 KB in 1042390 file. 489920 KB in 81101 indexes. 16 KB in damaged sectors. 1204584 KB in use. 65536 KB used from the registry. 135487116 KB available on disk. therefore it has found 16KB of damaged sectors. Now the file is recovered Should I be worried about the HD and run chkdsk periodically from now on?

  My Windows XP PC has stopped booting. On start up, before Windows boots a screen appears saying: Windows Could Not Boot: Could Not Find or Corrupted file <Windows root>\Sytem32\Hal.dll Please Reinstall the file... From that I understand that I have to reinstall the OS but my computer is so old that I have lost the backup and recovery disk. My Computer's Info: 32Bit Computer Pentium 4 Windows XP Service Pack 2 HP History: My Computer has 4 hard drives 2 internal 40 GB drives (C And D) 2 external 8GB drives (E And F) Additional Info: I need the files inside C And E The computer reads my flash drive as a hard drive (8.45GB)(I have never booted while my USB pluged in while I was troubleshooting) With some test I discovered that the C drive wasn't detected by the computer I have already configured the boot order of BiOS I have Set The SATA to IDE The Question: I have a setup for windows 8 32 bit how can I boot from my USB to run that setup? If that isn't the proper way to handle this problem please tell me the proper way.

• Why is access to my database very slow?

  I have a mysql database that used to work perfectly fine, but now it is dead slow on startup. When I type in $> mysql -u foo bar I get the following usual message for about 30 seconds before I get a prompt : Reading table information for completion of table and column names You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A Of course, I tried it and it goes a lot faster : $> mysql -u foo bar -A But why do I have to wait so long in regular startup ? This is not a very big database, and data does not seem to be corrupted (everything looks fine after startup). I have no other client connecting to the mysql server at the same time (only one process is shown with the command show full processlist) and I have already restarted the mysqld service. What's going on ?

• Ubuntu/Linux version recommendation for HP dv6 3122TX?

  I purchased a HP dv6 3122TX recently and after installing Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I ran into multiple issues like, The wireless driver is not supported by Uubntu. (1) [The driver is RaLink RT3090 ] The ethernet stopped working sometimes for no reason [The driver is Realtek RTL8111/8168B ] "Corrupted low memory at ..." issue which is described as a kernel bug in Ubuntu support forums. (It started to take me to a terminal instead of the GUI and couldn't start x server after that) As I'm not an expert Ubuntu user I got fed up of all these issue and got back to Windows 7. But I need an Ubuntu installation up and running for my development work. What are your suggestions about a reasonable Ubuntu version that I should try? Or a different Linux variation? Should I stick to a 32-bit version? It'd be great anyone can give some advice on this issue.

• Will the other directories on my C drive still be visible?

  My Windows 7 ate itself, corrupted a few files, now refuses to boot. On the same drive were other directories of various assorted non-Microsoft applications I like to use. After the crash, I have been mounting those from outside (as F:[whatever]). If I go ahead and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive and use the drive again as my primary, will those other directories be visible to it from inside? Meaning if I boot up my new installation of Windows from within that drive, will I be able to see those other old directories via Windows Explorer on the C drive (where any haven't been run over by the reinstalled OS)?   I have a 4Gb USB pen drive that I'm trying to format with FAT32. When I run fdisk, it gives me this message: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 64349. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) I've tried deleting the partition table, creating new partitions, etc, but they never work. Sometimes I can write to the drive the first time I use it after formatting it, but then it becomes read-only in both Windows and Linux. I've tried this on multiple computers. Am I doing something wrong, or is the drive reporting an incorrect number of cylinders? Is the drive itself likely to be corrupted, and is there anyway to fix this under Windows Vista or Linux?   I have a Samsung Series 7 with the Radeon 6750M switchable graphics. The ATI software lets you force programs to use the dedicated card. However, I'm not convinced it is actually ever using it, as the frame rates on some non-taxing games (Portal, TF2) are merely OK. To make matters worse, it looks like the ATI Catalyst Control has vanished from my laptop. To make it even worse, you can't download the driver and ATI CCC from ATI's site, you need to download it from Samsung, and the ZIP they provide is corrupted. How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

• File corruption

  Recently, almost every file I try to copy into my HDDs gets corrupted. When writing to the disk, some portion of the file is replaced by random bytes (Checked using Diff apps) There's no problem reading existing files. I'm pretty sure it's not the HDD, becasue I've tried another HDD (a brand new 1TB WD) and the problem still remains. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU, an ASUS M2NE motherboard, 2 WD SATA II HDDs (320GB + 1TB) and 3GB of Corsair RAM. My OS is Windows 7 (64 bit) Now, what could be the cause of this? If it's the motherboard, can it be fixed by using a PCI SATA card?

• Why is my laptop only producing sound when the headphones should be active?

  I think Skype may have corrupted my laptop speakers somehow. The other day I was listening to music on my headphones when a coworker started sending me IMs. Whenever the alert sound played, the music and alert would both come out through the laptop speakers for a second instead of the headphones. Now sound only comes out through the speakers when skype is playing sounds, or if I right click the volume control, select Playback Devices and test the headphones. So if I play music it's silent. If I go into Skype and dial the sound test call the music will start coming through the speakers. Any ideas how to fix this? Win7 by the way.

• Worker processes not starting in IIS 7.5. What should I check?

  I have a Windows 7 machine (Windows version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601) with IIS installed. At some point the installation appears to have become 'corrupted' in some way, as any requests are now met with the message: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. In IIS manager IIS is started and the app pool I am using reports itself as 'Started', yet there is no w3wp.exe process listed in the process list in task manager (I am a local admin and have clicked the 'Show processes from all users' button. I have enabled logging for the web site (at default location of %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles), but this folder is empty. I am assuming that this log output is written by w3wp.exe as it handles requests (no w3wp.exe, no log file?). Presumably there is another layer of request handling that is responsible for starting the worker processes, does thsi layer have log files I can check, and/or can I uninstall/re-install that layer? • How to wipe the slate clean on an Oracle installation?

  After a basic, successful installation of Oracle 11g, I ran dbca again to enable Enterprise Manager on my database. The operation hung at around 67% for half an hour or more, so I clicked Stop to abort the operation. Things seemed to wrap up cleanly, EM was working, all was well with the world. Then I started getting this dreaded error upon any attempt to connect in SQL*Plus: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified I thought perhaps the database had been corrupted due to the earlier aborted operation, so I ran dbca again and deleted the database. Then I attempted to create a new database in its stead, using a clone of the template created the first time around. Unfortunately, the clone database operation fails at 50% with the exact same error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified How can I clean up the mess I have created, short of reinstalling Oracle entirely from scratch?

• SBS 2008 File access restrictions after 5:30PM

  Hi there, SBS 2008, I have an issue whereby a user can't access a file after 5:30PM. They get the message: "cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read only I've checked the logon hours on the AD User account in question and there's no restrictions there. I have noticed that the account in question does not appear in the SBS Console, only in ADUC which means the account wasn't added using the wizard. It's a long shot but would that make a difference? Other than that I'm pretty stumped, any suggestions welcomed. Thanks
