• Cloning hard drive -- data, operating system settings, everything

  I am using Windows XP. My hard drive (Seagate 160gig Barracuda) is about to fail. Its already developed bad sectors and it seems to get worse everyday. Data transfer mode is down to PIO mode 2, chkdsk runs every now and then, registry and important windows files get corrupted and I spend 30-60 minutes running chkdsk /f /r from the recovery console. I've got a replacement (Seagate 5000gig Barracuda) and now i want to transfer each and every thing on to the new drive. I don't want to go through windows and software installation, I spent ages getting all those software installed and configured on that hard drive. Need advice: whats the best way to transfer everything onto the new drive so that it behaves just like the old one. And are there any "gotchas".

• Oracle 10.2.0.1 --> 10.2.0.4 patchset errors on Advanced Queuing tables. Serious or not?

  We're running Oracle on RHEL 5.4 64-bit. We recently did an upgrade from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4. Many errors were generated during the upgrade (sample listed below from trace.log) but during application testing afterward everything seemed fine (clean EXP, inserts, updates, deletes, etc.). The errors look like they are all related to Advanced Queuing tables and views. We are not using replication at all, this is a simple single instance db. ORA-24002: QUEUE_TABLE SYS.AQ_EVENT_TABLE does not exist ORA-24032: object AQ$_AQ_SRVNTFN_TABLE_T exists, index could not be created ORA-24032: object AQ$_ALERT_QT_S exists, index could not be created for queue ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AQADM_SYSCALLS", line 117 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AQADM_SYS", line 5116 Is this worth worrying about, and if so, how do I go about cleaning up/recreating the corrupted and/or missing objects?

• Losing windows XP files. How to retrieve them?

  I have a portable 500 GB HDD.Since last few days, all files of some folder are getting kinda corrupted.I can't access/delete them. Here is the example. If I try to access these files/folders, I get following error. This thing is kinda spreading in my HDD.Till now it has affected two folders worth 70 GB.In which one folder is backup folder where all my important data resides.So I am really in loss if I loose this data.   I am trying to move messages from a rather large mailbox to an archive mailbox. However I run into errors all the time. the command I am executing is Export-Mailbox -Identity MAILBOX_FROM -TargetMailbox ARCHIVE -TargetFolder ARCHIVE_FOLDER -StartDate 2009-02-01 -EndDate 2009-02-28 -DeleteContent -Confirm:$false I can copy/move some messages, but run into frequent "an unknown error has occurred" (statuscode -1056749164) I run the console as administrative user, and all permissions are set right, as far as I can tell. I've restricted the start and end dates in case the number of messages moved/deleted should create problems. Anything I am missing in my setup? Corrupted messages? Over-limit message sizes?

• Windows zip error: Windows cannot complete the extraction. The destination file could not be created

  I have a strange error in Windows 7 when I want to execute/open a file inside ZIP archive. I have two files: File1.dwg File2.dwg The archive is not corrupted ( I checked with 7zip utility ) When I double click on the any file inside ZIP (I opened ZIP with Windows Explorer), the error occured: Ok. If I open zip file with 7-zip or WinRAR every file could be opened(executed) without error and the AutoCAD is opened to see the dwg content. Why in Windows ZIP ?   I was trying to force my domain to redirect without www and could success through this code: .htaccess: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*) http://domain.com/$1 [R=301,L] however, this code is going to redirect all www to non-www, which is not what I want. I just want to make the main domain from www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com and the rest of the urls should be forced to www. any idea how to add or modify the code so I can achieve that through .htaccess ? Update: Thanks to all. I found out that swf file from piecemaker was corrupted and updated it with new one. so now it is all fine and works on both www and non-www. I'm still curious how to solve this issue anyways using .htaccess. Thanks again.

• List of MD /Raid/LVM (Devices) = How to mount them without any further information available?

  Hello Expets, I do not have much skills in linux and installed a system two years ago that I now had to reboot, but it seems I did not automate everything with start-scripts... My Problem: I miss some mountpoints. I have a list of my raids (excerpt:) md3 : active (auto-read-only) raid1 sda6[0] sdb6[1] 97659008 blocks [2/2] [UU] md4 : active (auto-read-only) raid1 sda7[0] sdb7[1] 250099776 blocks [2/2] [UU] and it seems md3 and md4 are NOT mounted. However i do NOT have any entries for them fstab file. What should I do next. I do NOT know which filesystem they have (most likely ext3). =Can I savely try to mount them with (mount -t ext3 /dev/md3 /mnt/mymntpoint) or will the lead to corrupted data, in case they are not ext3? What should I do next (based on the information given above). The goal is to remount these Devices again, but I do not know anything about them anymore... Thank you very much Jens

• Remote desktop session ends abruptly with a "protocol error"

  Intermittently we get a problem where a remote desktop session will get disconnected with the error message “Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.” We are getting this with one server only which is running Windows Server 2008, connecting with Windows 7 clients. The session itself stays running, you just get disconnected, and you can try and reconnect. Sometimes you get in for a while then it will kick you out. We are connecting from Windows 7 clients. We have tried connecting using Cord on a Mac and this works fine, so it's not like the session itself is corrupted. One problem is that there are some critical applications running under the session (I know, let's not discuss the idiocy of that), so we cannot reset the session in any way during the working day – so any diagnostics must have minimum impact. • Format Factory not working for mov files

  I have attempted multiple destination formats with no success. I am using Format Factor 2.30. I drag and drop a .mov file into FF, select all to mpg (or any format) then click Start. It thinks for a couple seconds and then jumps to 100%. When I open the file I get no sound or picture from the video. These mov files were created with a Canon SX10 camera. (It is my brother's camera so I'm not sure of the model.) Any suggestions? TMPGEnc is able to convert the files with the QTReader plug in so the video isn't corrupted or something. Thanks. Jeff

• Current alternative to the old CHECKSUM program

  I'm looking for an application that does md5/sha hash check on specific files/folders periodically and store an index file per folder for future verification. I remember such application exist in DOS days, to detect files infected by virus. The main purpose for this is to detect corrupted copy of backup, as I understand that consumer grade hardware are not 100% error free when doing backup or file transfer from device to device. The hash can also be used to generate a list of changed files for backup. Most of the software I can find is hash manually. EDIT: Windows based application, preferably a shell extension which I can right click on a folder and do a checksum/verify all files in that folder. Even better if that can integrate with a backup/sync program like BeyondCopy

• Does RAID 1 protect against corruption?

  Does Raid 1 protect against data corruption? For example, let's say that I am keeping all of my important files on a NAS that uses 2 disks in a RAID 1. If one hard drive has some kind of internal problem and the data becomes corrupted, does the RAID recognize this automatically and correct it using data from the other good disk? Could it even know which copy is the good one? Does RAID 5 protect against corruption? I know that RAID is not a backup solution. I am trying to figure out how to make sure that I am not backing up corrupt data!

• Any opinions on Paragon's NTFS for Mac solution?

  I am currently using the free NTFS-3G to access my NTFS drive from the Mac. It seems pretty stable (except once in the very beginning, it locked up the Mac and corrupted my NTFS drive, which I then fixed with chkdsk from a PC). However, speed is NOT one of its virtues. I've been looking at buying Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X 7.0. Their product comparison PDF claims nearly double the speed (vs NTFS-3G) in almost every category (read, write, etc...). Can someone tell me whether the product is stable and whether the speed claims are true.

• How is it possible that Winrar can repair any volume with one .rev file?

  I just learned about .rev files with Winrar -- that if you have a 10-part RAR volume, for example, plus one .rev (recovery) volume -- that .rev volume will be able to "fix" any -one- corrupted volume. How is it able to do this? Obviously there's something I'm not understanding, as I don't understand how one volume could have the "data" to fix any/all of the individual broken volumes. I'd guess that it's because the volumes aren't broken up like I tend to imagine -- each volume having individual files of the whole packed into them, but rather, it's viewed as one continuous "file", so to speak, of data. And that there must be some type of CRC'ish repair work -- But I just don't understand how you could have 9 working volumes, with 1 damaged, but a recovery volume that would be able to repair -any- one of those volumes. How is it able to hold "all" of the data in just one recovery file?

• How to restore from file using Symantec NetBackup 7.5

  I have an install of Symantec NetBackup 7.5 and I want to restore the server from a NetBackup image file. The file was created using NetBackup before I arrived. We had a hardware failure that corrupted this server and it needed to be rebuilt, now we want to restore from this image file. I can't for the life of me figure out how to restore from that file. I've installed the NetBackup application but it can't find the file when using the restore command within the application. If I double-click the file it opens the application then gives me the same "can't find any NetBackup files" error. I also can't simply drag the file into the NetBackup window. Any advice on how I restore from this file would be appreciated, thank you.

• What can I do to resolve a cng.sys error while booting?

  Some weird problem happened to my Maxtor 500GB external harddisk, it all started when it once freezed during some operation. Now when I insert the drive in a USB slot, Windows asks me to format it, and if I try to open the drive from my computer it says, "not accessible".. I tried most of the major partition managers and partition recovery software. All of these can see and access my partition normally. It showing the free space and used space correctly.   It's my understanding that, without correctly disabling OS-level and drive-level caching, there is a chance that in case of system failure the Write-Ahead Log might not be saved correctly and in fact might get corrupted, possibly preventing data recovery. I've already made sure that wal_sync_method=fdatasync however I was unable to make any configuration changes with hdparm since I get the following: $ sudo htparm -I /dev/xvdf /dev/xvdf: HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed: Invalid argument Looks like that option is not available in the kind of setup you get in EC2. Am I missing anything here? Are there any other obvious caches I have to disable to ensure the WAL's safety?

• Problem getting video from DVD

  I have a DVD that a customer needs me to pull ~5 minutes of video from, and convert it to FLV to play on their website. I downloaded AVS Video Converter and tried to use it to convert the VOB file to FLV, with the thought of editing after, and also tried MPEG. Both times it froze up. I then tried to just copy the file from the DVD to my hard drive, thinking that maybe the disc access was slowing things down too much. I got a "Cyclic redundancy" error from Windows while doing that, and it stopped copying. Is the file corrupted? Is there any better way to get it from the DVD player? I only need 5 minutes of 1.5 hours, so if I can avoid converting the entire thing then editing, that would be awesome Thanks for your help

• SQL Server backup/restore error: The Media Family on Device is Incorrectly Formed.

  Basically, I'm having this issue: http://www.sqlcoffee.com/Troubleshooting047.htm What I'm doing is running a script I found online (http://pastebin.com/3n0ZfybL) to do a full backup, then rar'ing up the file and moving it to my computer. The CRC of the backup file inside the rar is correct on both computers, so there is no problem with data being corrupted when I transfer it. But then I go and try to restore the database on my dev computer here and I get the errors "sql server cannot process this media family" ... "msg 3013". Why is this happening? I'd test out the backup on the server I'm getting it from, but it's a production server.

I'm booting up from an Ubuntu live CD and trying to copy all the files from C: to my external drive, but the system expands all of the links, producing a projected copy size of 1.8TB (my external drive is just 1TB, and the data in c: is around 700MB). Then I looked at dd and other backup utilities. Anything I looked into, I couldn't figure out whether or not the image would be readable in Windows through any other app. Has anyone else tried to back up data from a corrupted Windows installation using Ubuntu?

  I have downloaded databasename.bak file from my hosting company, when i tried to restore that DB file in SQL server 2008 it is keep on giving me following error. The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. We found all corrupted files by git and reverted them. So now I need to find the weak point. With high probability we can say, that it's not the ftp or ssh password abduction. The support specialist of hosting provider (after logs analysis) said that it was the security hole in our code. My questions: 1) What tools should I use, to review access and error logs of Apache? (Our server distro is Debian). 2) Can you write tips of suspicious lines detection in logs? Maybe tutorials or primers of some useful regexps or techniques? 3) How to separate "normal user behavior" from suspicious in logs. 4) Is there any way to preventing attacks in Apache? • "Turn Windows Features on or off" when installing .NET 3.5 SP1?

  I am trying to install a program on my Win7 machine and it says that I need to have .NET 2.0 or later installed. Since Win7 comes with .NET pre-installed, I called support and they told me to just re-install .NET since my .NET install is probably corrupted. The program I am trying to install is SNGWiz (http://www.sngwiz.com/). I do not think its installer is borked. However, when I install .NET 3.5 SP1 using the download from the Microsoft .NET web site, I get the following error: "You must use 'Turn Windows features on or off' in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1." I have gone to the Windows Features on/off panel and have turned 3.5 both on and off and have tried to re-install .NET 3.5 SP1 under both situations. But it has failed with the same error. What to do?
