  • What is the fastest way to unzip textfiles in Matlab during a function?

    Hello all, I would like to scan text of textfiles in Matlab with the textscan function. Before I can open the textfile with fid = fopen('C:\path'), I need to unzip the files first. The files have the extension: *.gz There are thousands of files which I need to analyze and high performance is important. I have two ideas: (1) Use an external program an call it from the command line in Matlab (2) Use a Matlab 'zip'toolbox. I have heard of gunzip, but don't know about its performance. Does anyone knows a way to unzip these files as quick as possible from within Matlab? Thanks!

  • Matlab - binary vector with high concentration of 1s (or 0s)

    What's the best way to generate a number X of random binary vectors of size N with concentration of 1s (or, simmetrically, of 0s) that spans from very low to very high? Using randint or unidrnd (as in this question) will generate binary vectors with uniform distributions, which is not what I need in this case. Any help appreciated!

  • Replace empty cells with logical 0's before cell2mat in MATLAB

    I've got a cell array of empty cells and ones that I want to convert to a logical array, where the empty cells are zeros. When I use cell2mat, the empty cells are ignored, and I end up with a matrix of solely 1's, with no reference to the previous index they held. Is there a way to perform this operation without using loops? Example code: for n=1:5 %generate sample cell array mycellarray{n}=1; end mycellarray{2}=[] %remove one value for testing Things I've tried: mylogicalarray=logical(cell2mat(mycellarray)); which results in [1,1,1,1], not [1,0,1,1,1]. for n=1:length(mycellarray) if isempty(mycellarray{n}) mycellarray{n}=0; end end mylogicalarray=logical(cell2mat(mycellarray)); which works, but uses loops.

  • Typecast to an int in Octave/Matlab

    I need to call the index of a matrix made using the linspace command, and based on somde data taken from an oscilloscope. Because of this, the data inputed is a double. However, I can't really call: Time[V0Found] where V0Found is something like 5.2 however, taking index 5 is close enough, so I need to drop the decimal. I used this equation to drop the decimal: V0FoundDec = V0Found - mod(V0Found,1) Time[V0FoundDec] However, eve though that drops the decimal, octave still complains about it. So, what can I do to typecast it to an int? Thank you.

    Using regexp with tokens on cell array of strings I've got cell array of cells. Here is simplified example: S = {'string 1';'string 2';'string 3'}; res = regexp(S,'(\d)','tokens') res = {1x1 cell} {1x1 cell} {1x1 cell} res{2}{1} ans = '2' I know I have only one match per cell string in S. How I can convert this output into cell arrays of strings in a vectorized form?

The length of 2nd and 3rd columnsshould match the number in the 1st column. The 1st blob, for example, should be [21992901; 21998673]. How I can convert it? Update: Just after submitting this question I thought it might be hex representation of a string. And it was confirmed: >> char(result{1,2}') ans = 21992901,21998673, So now I need to convert all blobs hex data into numeric vectors. Still thinking to do it in a vectorized way, since number of rows can be large.

I used this code to get it: myP=zeros(n*n,r); Ptables(:,:,1)=P1; Ptables(:,:,2)=P2; for j=1:r for i = 1:r; temp = MixPr(i,j)*(Ptables(:,:,i) + ... (x(:,i)-x0(:,j))*(x(:,i)-x0(:,j))'); myP(:,j)= myP(:,j) + temp(:); end end Some brilliant guy proposed this formula as another way to produce myP for j=1:r xk1=x(:,j); PP=xk1*xk1'; PP0(:,j)=PP(:); xk1=x0(:,j); PP=xk1*xk1'; PP1(:,j)=PP(:); end myP = (P+PP0)*MixPr-PP1 I tried to formulate the equality between the two methods and seems to be this one. To make things easier, I ignored from both methods the summation of matrix P. where the first part denotes the formula that I used, while the second comes from his code snippet. Do you think this is an obvious equality? If yes, ignore all the above and just try to explain why. I could only start from the LHS, and after some algebra I think I proved it equals to the RHS. However I can't see how did he (or she) think of it in the first place.

First i create my polynomial p5 = [1 0 0 0 0 -1] %x^5 - 1 r5 = roots(p5) stem (p5) Im using the stem function, but I would like to remove the stems, and just get the circle around the roots.     i have the following matrices letter=[A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z ... a b c d e f g h ii jj k l m o p q r s t u v w x y z]; number=[one two three four five six seven eight nine zero]; character =[number letter]; Character becomes a matrix of 42 by 1464, but i would like to break it into cells of 42 by 24 using mat2cell.   • Updating GUI axes in MATLAB

    HI, I am making a GUI for a program I have created, where I need to be able to change the position of a load along a beam. I have set up the axes and the slider properly, but I am unsure how to get the axes to update, as I can't find any examples that show how to do this on the internet. At present, as I move the load, the position updates properly, but the old position stays on screen as well, which is quite annoying. Can anyone recommend any good examples that show how to do this, or does anyone have a suggestion of how to go about refreshing the axes? Regards, James

  • Changing the x-axis of seqlogo figures in matlab

    I'm making a large number of seqlogos programatically. They are hundreds of columns wide and so running a seqlogo normally creates letters that are too thin to see. I've noticed that I only care about a few of these columns (not necessarily consecutive columns) ... most are noise but some are highly conserved. I use something like this snippet: conserve_cell = seqlogo(wide_seqs, 'displaylogo', false); high_bit_cols = any(conserve_cell{2}>1.0,1); [~, handle] = seqlogo(wide_seqs(:,high_bit_cols )); Although when I do this I lose the information about which columns the data came from. Normally I would just change the x-axis of the seqlogo. However, seqlogo's are some sort of crazy java-based object and calls like: set(handle, 'xticklabel', num2str(find(high_bit_cols))) don't work.     I'm trying to find out wether a matrix is orthonormal. I begin by checking if the vectors are normal by doing for j=1:2; if norm(S:,j) ~= 1; return; % Not normal vector end end But when norm returns 1.0000 comparing that to 1 is true and the function returns, which is not what i want.
