  • Why are applications slowing down on the computer's second monitor?

    Here's an interesting one. Problem I have a user on Windows XP who is running a web application inside IE8. She has two monitors plugged in via DVI cables. When she is working the the browser on her primary monitor, everything is fine, but when she drags the window over to the second monitor, the web applications functionality grinds to a halt. It's not just web apps either - many applications exhibit the problem. What I've tried Switching the two monitors in the OS. It's obviously not the monitor's fault. Confirmed that it's the app slowing down, and not the graphical rendering. The application in question actually locks up. The mouse is unaffected, and I can drag other windows on top of the problematic application. Any ideas?

    I want to run a process when a file is written to a directory on Ubuntu. I understand I can write a monitor to do this. (ie not an event based trigger but a 'monitor'). To implement this - other than writing a for loop of infinite duration in C that polls the directory - what steps would you take to implement this? What steps would you take to implement a monitor on Ubuntu that runs a process (another application) when a file is written to a directory? (The reason that you'd do this is the that process writing the file is under a limited set of permissions (eg tomcat6) but the executed process (an existing software package) needs root (ie to run a process in a chroot jail))

  • Where can I find a good, tab-less privacy filter for my monitor?

    Hi, I have an ASUS laptop with a 14" monitor (12" by 7" to be more specific), and I've been looking for a decent privacy filter that I can use with for, yet I couldn't find any. The problem with the filters I've found is that they all use those ugly "tabs" that you have to stick on the sides of your monitor in order to slip the filter in. I'm looking for ones that are like HP privacy filter, where parts of it goes under the frame of the monitor to hold it in place. Too bad HP doesn't sell filters that fit my screen. So, any idea where I can get a good privacy filter? Your help is so much appreciated

  • Monitor doesn't turn on the first try, is power supply failure imminent?

    I been noticing for the last couple days that when I turn on my computer and then my monitor(22inch lcd) that my monitor does not turn on. I push the "on" button and the blue light comes on but the screen is blank. I usually have to then restart my computer and then my monitor will show in the upper left hand corner a dialog bog that says "analog" and it is flickering. Then everything goes to normal. Thinking it is the power supply but at the same time the tower is a year old(it came with a power supply). So when I take that into consideration I am not sure.

I have spend some time trying to understand what I should buy and why. I could only zero down on the size (20") and LED. So, I'm looking for advice on many other factors like resolution, pixel density, panel technology and so forth. What should I look for in a computer monitor to avoid further eye problems? Why?

  • Need help with creating complex UITableView items (like the Settings app).

    I hoping to create a custom Settings view, similar to the Settings application, but with more control over the UI and access to some settings (i need to lock some of the settings). Obvously, there are a variety of UI elements mixed in each row of application's UITableView. For example, the 'Airplane Mode' setting shows a UISwitch, while the 'Wi-Fi' setting has a text value adjacent to the disclosure symbol (''). Further complicating matters, is the grouping of these settings. I have some general questions about the approach I should take: Seems like i need to save the name of the setting, its current value, its grouping, and the type of UI element(s) needed to modify its value. i would like to make use [NSUserDefault standardUserDefaults], but not have these settings appear in the Settings application. I'm guessing that I will need to create my own settings-persistence class. is it better to build each one of these complex UI-element combinations in code or to create a series of custom views based on the UITableViewCell and load the appropriate one? i'm guessing the latter. some of the setting require that i load another view to select its value. assuming that the application is based on the Utility pattern, should the SettingsView manage the navigation stack, rather than having the app delegate do so?   • xmodmap reverting periodically

    I'm using xmodmap to swap control and command keys on my macbook pro. However, periodically the key revert back to their original state and this is becoming quite annoying. I'm on Ubuntu 13.10 and I can remember when this situation started occurring was when the system got a keyboard settings (in the system settings) update. Any ideas as to how to either: 1) delete the keyboard settings, or 2) stop the keyboard settings from reverting my keys ??? Cheers!

  • Have it fixed or buy a new one?

    My dual-monitor system has just become a single-monitor system again when the older monitor decided it would be nice to just turn to black. It's a Samsung LCD monitor and is over three years old. Not sure if the warranty is still valid but I just wonder what option would me more efficient: 1) Have the monitor fixed for a small amount. 2) Buy a new monitor for a slightly bigger amount. When monitors were still expensive, I wouldn't doubt about this and would just have my monitor repaired. But prices are so low nowadays, (and repairs are expensive) that I wonder if it's worth the trouble... Of course, I'm in no hurry since I still have another monitor. It's just that I liked the dual-monitor setup. Solved! Just ordered a new monitor. A Samsumg Syncmaster T260HD 25,5". Much more than it would cost me if I just had my old one repaired but I noticed that this one has a build-in TV tuner, plus speakers. It's way more expensive than a repair, but it's worth the additional value it provides.

  • Thinking about buying a LG 30" monitor

    I'd love to get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005115 but I'm wondering if I should hold out until more LED monitors are on the market. I love really like the brightness of the 27" imac monitor and the above monitor is only rated at 5 cd/m2 less than that monitor, but wouldn't a back lit monitor appear to be much brighter than an LCD monitor? Does anyone know how the above monitor compares to the 27" imac monitor? Why are Apple monitors in general so much more expensive than other monitors - just the brand name? I must be confused about how to read the specs? Thanks in advance for your input!

I was reading a perfmon tutorial and from this list of essential counters I have found the following ones on my machine: PhysicalDisk\Bytes/sec_Total Network Interface\Bytes Total/Sec\nic name But I haven't found the following counters nowhere: Processor\% Processor Time_Total Process\Working Set_Total Memory\Available MBytes Where do I find them? Note that my Windows is pt-BR (instead of en-US). Where do I find language specific documentation for windows tools like PerfMon?

  • How to access MyProject.MySettings.Default.SomeSetting from xaml?

    I have defined a StringCollection in the Project Settings. I want to use the values in a ComboBox. Is there a way to access it xamly? I tried: <CollectionViewSource Source="{x:Static src:MySettings.Default.MyCollection}" /> <CollectionViewSource x:Key="RoomSections" Source="{x:Static src:MySettings.Default.RoomSections}" /> *src is the xmlns of the project It says: "Type src:MySettings.Default was not found". The thing is that MySettings is a class that offers a Default property which is a thread-safe instance of MySettings, I really want to get the collection from the Default property and not by instantiating a new on. Is there other ways I am not aware of, maybe ObjectDataProvider can access static objects? I thought, maybe I can make in the App.xaml a global resource that return MySettings.Default which is an instance of the MySettings class, and then access all its properties, I will try that out, but I prefer the easy way.

  • Is it good to use .settings for storing controls text data?

    In my WinForms applications I often put the controls text data (form title, labels texts, button captions, etc.) into a .settings (feature automatically generated by Visual Studio - based on the ApplicationSettingsBase class). In particular, Add a form or a control. In Solution Explorer add a new string item into the application scope of the settings file. Bind the control text property with the corresponding item of the settings file (through the property binding). Good point of this is that all my text data is collected in one place and easy to check and edit. Also it is convenient when I want to use the same text for several controls. However, I haven't heard that somebody uses the .settings such way. In tutorials for creating multilingual applications, for example, it is recommended to enter texts directly into the control property. So, is it good practice to use .settings for storing controls text data? Brief conclusion from the answers: Storing controls text data in the .settings is not common practice.

    It's my first time trying to make anything really interesting in C# and I was trying to make a simple form or game screen where the user could define a custom resolution/screen ratio etc. or to automatically detect the max screen size/ratio and output? its my first game, so I was wondering if it was possible or if there would be any major issues with such, rather than just setting it to 1366x768 (the resolution of all of my computers).     I want to divide business layer (BLL) of an asp.net application into multiple components. Each component is a .NET class library which is compiled as a standalone DLL. These components should have their own configuration files. For example "MyNameSpace.Users.dll" contains classes about users of the website and there's a password policy to check if password length is at least x characters. When webmaster edits the config file of this DLL and set x to y then component (DLL) should use new value (y) in the future and enforce passwords to be at least y characters. I want each component as a single project and compile them separaely (and not to put all projects in a solution in Visual Studio), and put the DLLs of these libraries into the "Bin" folder of my ASP.NET application. Is it possible ? Where should I put these config files ?

  • iPad width in viewport settings overflowing past device width

    I am at my wit's end here, and I beseech the fine folks here at stackoverflow for help. I am working on a design for a blog for a friend of mine, and I'm working in HTML5. I am trying to get the width of the page to span the width of an iPad. So, in my document head, I have the following: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0"> Now, if you go to the index page, on an iPad, it looks just fine. The width of the page spans the width of the iPad in portrait mode, as I expect it to: http://www.alanreuterart.com/femmegamers/index.html It also looks fine on any individual blog posts as well. However, on the "about" and "join" pages, the width does not do this. It's actually overflowing past the length of the iPad to the right. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get it those two pages to correctly span the device width of the iPad. One important note, though: before anyone tells me to set my viewport width to 960, I cannot do that because the pages have media queries in them to convert to a mobile layout for the iPhone and other mobile phones.     I use Hibernate3 and Hibernate Tools 3.2.4 to generate hbm.xml and java files and I want to use List instead of HashSet(...). I've tried to modify the hbm.xml files, putting list instead of set. Is there any way to specify to hibernate tools that I want to generate automatically a list not a HashSet? Is there a way for me to do this on Windows? EDIT: I want to write Sandbox program to limit time and memory usage of its child that can work on both Windows and Linux, and now it can only run on Linux via ptrace

  • How can I efficiently retrieve a large number of database settings as PHP variables?

    Currently all of my script's settings are located in a PHP file which I 'include'. I'm in the process of moving these settings (about 100) to a database table called 'settings'. However I'm struggling to find an efficient way of retrieving all of them into the file. The settings table has 3 columns: ID (autoincrements) name value Two example rows might be: 1 admin_user john 2 admin_email_address [email protected] The only way I can think of retrieving each setting is like this: $result = mysql_query("SELECT value FROM settings WHERE name = 'admin_user'"); $row = mysql_fetch_array($result); $admin_user = $row['value']; $result = mysql_query("SELECT value FROM settings WHERE name = 'admin_email_address'"); $row = mysql_fetch_array($result); $admin_email_address = $row['value']; etc etc Doing it this way will take up a lot of code and will likely be slow. Is there a better way? Thanks.

  • Computer runs but monitor is on power saving mode?

    This stuff rarely happens, but when it does I simply restart my PC then it works fine. But today after several restart attempts it seems to be stuck. I tried removing the video card then switched to onboard video, same thing: The PC runs, (there's power and fans are working) but the monitor is stuck on power saving mode (blank screen). Is this a monitor or PC problem? Any ideas what might be the problem? I'm Windows 7 btw.

    I tend to leave Skype calls on overnight, and for some reason Skype overrides my computer going idle. I have no idea why this is; it prevents Pidgin from idling, as well as some other programs, and prevents my computer from going into power-saving turning off the monitor. Anyway, is there a way to manually turn the monitor off on a laptop in Windows 7?
