  • Why does Windows 7 always automatically change the input or keyboard language?

    I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem. Currently, I am using the first option, two input languages.   • Can't Type Tilde character in Mac OS X

    Hi this is a new problem that I did not have a few weeks ago. I have a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard running on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The problem is that I cannot type a tilde. Instead when I press the tilde I get this character: §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ I cannot for the life of me figure this out, except that I vaguely remember I can asked to redetect the Mac keyboard layout for this keyboard and I think i chose the wrong one. Now I get this weird character when pressing tilde. How can I fix this? Or how can I redetect this keyboard layout? Thanks.

  • How to select text in Pico when I don't have a carat character?

    I am using Pico via Terminal/SSH on an iPad with a French bluetooth keyboard. There is no way to type the carat (^) key to select text (control-carat to start selection). The carat on the keyboard is used to type a circonflex accent (août), and only becomes active when one types a letter after pressing it. There is therefore no way to type control-^. When I do type ctrl-^ in Pico, the cursor moves to the previous line. Is there an alternate way to select text in Pico? I can't see how to use it without finding a solution.

  • < key triggers sticky alt on Windows 7

    When using a code editor like Notepad++ or Eclipse I'm experiencing a rather annoying problem: each time I type the < key the keyboard latches into some unexpected mode whereby the subsequent keypress behaves as if the alt key were being held down. The only way to return to normal mode is to hit the escape key twice immediately after I type a < character. The keyboard is a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 and the OS is Windows 7. Does anyone have any idea what I should do to stop this behaviour? Thanks

    I have a lot of custom keyboard shortcuts and will be migration Macs. I tested Migration Assistant and it did not seem to get these. I read somewhere that they are stored in the individual application's plist files in the ~/Library/Application Support folder but even after copying a few of these folders over the shortcuts do not seem to follow. How can I get all of the keyboard shortcuts migrated to a new mac?

  • Keyboard for programmers

    I'm trying to improve my working environment and I'm still searching for that perfect keyboard that practically types bug-free code all by itself. At the moment I'm using a Logitech Wave for my Windows need and an Apple Wireless Keyboard (the one without a numeric keypad) when doing OS X stuff. I'm quite happy with the Logitech Wave but I would prefer one without all the extra multimedia buttons. What I like most about the Apple Wireless Keyboard is that it is very similar to the Macbook's keyboard which for me makes it easier to write code when on my Macbook. What kind of keyboard would you recommend for going all out writing code until your fingers bleed? I have remapped the Caps Lock key to Ctrl which after a while feels really good, until I have to sit at another computer or when someone at work is going to show me something on my computer. Are there other little keyboard tricks that you use to get a little bit more productive? I have looked into switching to Dvorak but I have decided it's not for me.

  • Way to turn on keyboard's caps-lock light without actually turning on caps-lock?

    I'm writing a program that uses caps-lock as a toggle switch. It would be nice to set the LED of the key to show that my program is on or off, like the capslock key does naturally. I know that I could just SendInput('Capslock'); or whatever to actually turn caps-lock on and off. But my app is a typing program, and I don't want to have to deal with translating the all-caps keys that turning it on would give me into their lower/upper cases. I might go that route eventually, but not for this version. I would however be interested in just turning on the LED light WITHOUT actually turning on caps-lock. Is there any way to do that? Thank you.

  • Keyboard focus being stolen by Flash

    Performing a search, I noticed several questions dedicated to how to steal/trap the keyboard focus of the visitor. Considering this site is dedicated to programming that's not suprising. I was wondering if anyone can advise me on how to prevent this type of behavior. Losing keyboard focus to flash basically removes my browser's functionality until I use the mouse to click elsewhere (I use Mozilla Firefox). Anyone know of some kind of plugin or greasemonkey script that will prevent my keyboard focus from being stolen? Normal browser "shortcuts" are rendered useless by having to use the mouse to return keyboard focus to the browser. Edit: Reply to the post below, I do have flashblock / noscript and some other things. My issue is flash that I want to see/interact with stealing my focus. Basically looking for something I can toggle that will prevent flash from getting keyboard focus or a way to force my firefox keyboard commands to the browser

  • How do Opera's keyboard shortcut settings work?

    Firefox 4 beta is starting to freeze up the way Firefox 3 used to on my machine, and I want a browser that'll play gifs at full speed, so on a Mac my only other choice seems to be Opera. There are just two issues I have with it right now: one, the scrolling is weird compared to every other Mac application, but I can get used to that if there's no way to fix it. Two, cmd-1 through cmd-9 activate the "speed dial" bookmarks instead of selecting tabs 1-9, like in Firefox and Chrome. I can disable those shortcuts easily enough, so I don't keep accidentally loading a different page when I instinctively try to do that, but in an ideal world I could remap those commands to do what I want. The keyboard shortcut editor is weird: There seems to be a scrappy little language for associating actions with commands. It has some limited autocompletion when you type stuff in, and I couldn't find a "select specific tab" action, but some of the existing commands are complicated enough that I'd be surprised if there's not a way to do it. Is there documentation for this language anywhere? Clicking "help" just brings me to this page, which is not very helpful.

    Hello, I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed, Using Gnome 2.30.0 I'm using a Laptop, HP Pavilion dv9000 I've stumbled on responsiveness issues with my keyboard, Sometimes it's really obvious - the keyboard doesn't respond fast enough to my typing. Checked sticky keys and all that, it's all disabled of course. Now, I also checked on Windows to see if the problem is Hardware or something, and there are no responsiveness issues there... I'm thinking it's Gnome (or the X). Thanks.

    I have a Dell Optiplex 330 and have recently done a Windows XP repair. After it was finished I was able to use the computer just fine. Now I take it back to it's original location and plug in the OEM mouse and keyboard and they both work until Windows XP loads. As soon as windows loads the lights go out on both the keyboard and mouse.

    I have a lovely ancient ergonomic keyboard (no name SK - 6000) connected via a DIN-ps/2 adapter to a ps/2-usb adapter to my docking station. After Grub it stops working. It takes either suspending and waking up or replugging it while Linux is running to get it to work. No extra kernel modules get loaded for this. When it works and I restart without power off, it will work immediately.     I'm about to get a 23" monitor to connect to my laptop for programming, and general multimedia besides. This is the monitor; what do you think? Also, would you recommend getting a keyboard to use instead of the laptop's one? It seems like it would be awkward otherwise. This is the keyboard I'm looking at because it seems to have the low laptop style keys. Would you recommend something different?

    I was using my EEE PC 1000H running Windows XP and out of the blue, the keyboard stopped working - pressing keys does absolutely nothing. It does not appear to be a hardware issue, as I am able to enter BIOS configuration with no issues. I've tried: 'Safe mode' 'Last known good configuration' Reinstalling the generic keyboard driver Removing all power sources and holding down the power button, as suggested by popular forums. What could the problem be, and what could I try?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 live cd keyboard problem.

    Today I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 x64 .iso but when trying it out in live cd the keyboard of both my laptop and a microsoft branded one didn't work. I was planning into installing Ubuntu in a partition but I couldn't even put my info in the installation process to do it. Is this a problem with the .iso or the driver? because I'm afraid that if I can actually go ahead with the installation then the keyboard won't work after that too.
