• mac: How to mount ejected external hdd again

  I've used my WD My Book 1TB for quite some time now. I always simply unplug it without officially 'ejecting' it. However, yesterday I did eject it (the partitions) before unplugging it. However, now, when i reconnect the hdd, it does not show the drives. It only shows the WD SmartWare partition (which is empty btw). The rest doesn't start. Does anyone know how to mount an unmounted disk? thx in advance!

• How can you make a Windows USB HDD Modify All for All Users

  Hi, I use a USB HDD a lot between lots of different Windows Boxes. What I find after a while is that there get to be lots of different Permission on the files in some cases stopping me looking at files or removing them. They want Admin rights or even sometimes you need to put the disk back into the original machine with the original user. This is a right pain. Is there away of making the disk have Modify All for All Users and making this the default for all files on the disk. Thanks

  Hi, I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• Lost HDD partition to clean command, testdisk unresponsive

  I accidentally cleaned my external HDD by the clean command in Diskpart and got a full sized heart attack after that. I did some research and I have tried a number of tools already. To name a few: Testdisk Recuva Partition Find and mount Eassos Recovery I have even tried some other dumb sounding tools, but none of them could find the lost partition. They just show "no partition found". Testdisk shows Partition sector doesn't have the endmark 0xAA55. The file recovery softwares list the files, but none of them seem to be able to restore the lost partition. I need to recover the disk as it was. Any help would be much appreciated!

  Hello I have a problem with a Fujitsu laptop. Some kid played with it and now the hdd is a wreck. I can't install Windows XP, Windows 7 or Linux. I checked with hiren's boot for bad sector did a chdisk on it says I don't have any bad sectors, on smart says is active but status error. I tried format and it worked, I tried copying files using a live CD and it worked, but when I try to install the OS it says it can't format, or it can't copy files.

• 3 TB HDD won't reactivate

  After doing a clean install of Windows 8 my Seagate 3 TB HDD won't reactivate in Disk Management. The two volumes are there but I can't use them for some reason. The drive was previously used with a GPT partition table, I can see the two spanned volumes but can't reactivate either. I backed up all my files from Windows 7 onto that drive and desperately need them back. What can and should I do to get the drive back up and running? When I go to Disk → Properties → Volumes, it claims the drive has a MBR partition style, so converting to GPT somehow without data loss should work. gDisk claims to be able to do that but when I point it to the drive, it claims that it has a GPT partition and a protected MBR partition. Any suggestions on what to do?

• Can I use a Smart Array P410 controller on a HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server?

  This link says the HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server only supports Smart Array E200, E500, P400 and P800 controllers. Can I use a Smart Array P410 instead? Currently the server has only the default internal controller, I need an additional one for better performance and to support additional drives (the default controller only supports 4, with a Smart Array controller all 8 bays can be used). The disks are SATA ones.

• Prevent Windows 7 prompt format USB HDD

  I am running Windows 7. I have a USB HDD 100% formatted with a Trucypt partition. When I insert the drive into my system, Windows asks if I would like to format the drive, each time I insert the drive. So how do I turn this prompt off? If so, I would prefer it be applied globally (e.g. no more prompts for any other drives). Since its an invisible partition unless mounted with Trucypt, Windows is always going to think nothing is there and continue to prompt me. I don't want to hit enter on the keyboard a few times by mistake doing something else and have it to go through the process. I'll lose everything. It is all backed up BTW. Will just be inconvienient.

• Booting Linux from External HDD, with persistence

  I am trying to install Linux, specifically Lubuntu or BackTrack 5 on an external HDD (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) but I have had no luck using YUMI, or Untebootin to get it working. I want the hard drive to be able to save the data within Linux (As in, If I install a program, it will stay there). I also tried doing this with a flash drive, which does boot, but it does not save data (I tried following Pendrive's tutorial on creating a casper-rw file and adding "persistent" to various files, but I cannot get it to save files. Basically, I just want a form of linux on a portable device that will save files and settings between boots Note: I do not have a CD to install from. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

  I just installed W8 on an Intel 330 180 GB SSD. I have 3 1TB HDDs. 1 HDD will be external for backup. 2 HDDs are then available for my PC. I do not need 2 TB of storage, so I thought I'd set these up to be exact clones of one another, so that if one dies I have a backup in the computer to go along with my external. Is this a good set up? How best would this be accomplished? I've heard people suggest RAID but I've never done RAID, have no idea what it is, and have no idea how to set it up in my BIOS. • Encryption of external HDD -- accessible from windows without installation

  I would like to use encryption on my external HDD but I would like to be able to access the encrypted data from Windows as well. As suggested in other questions, TrueCrypt is one option here, or I am using momentarily encfs, which is not available for Windows. But my question goes further: I would like to be able to access the encrypted partition from Windows without installation as I will be using it from different Windows machines for which I have no administrator access. My main OS is Linux and I have full root access to that computer. Is there a full disk or file based encryption which I can use cross platform and which does not require installation under Windows?   Recently, almost every file I try to copy into my HDDs gets corrupted. When writing to the disk, some portion of the file is replaced by random bytes (Checked using Diff apps) There's no problem reading existing files. I'm pretty sure it's not the HDD, becasue I've tried another HDD (a brand new 1TB WD) and the problem still remains. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU, an ASUS M2NE motherboard, 2 WD SATA II HDDs (320GB + 1TB) and 3GB of Corsair RAM. My OS is Windows 7 (64 bit) Now, what could be the cause of this? If it's the motherboard, can it be fixed by using a PCI SATA card?

  I have an external HDD and I kind of messed up the file permissions but when fixing it I thought it is ok bc with my username I can access the files perfectly fine. • Boot camp install from a HDD image

  How would one go about imaging an old work computer (old IBM aptiva from 2001ish) with Windows XP and lots of stuff (VPN client with settings etc) to a new iMac, while preserving Mac OSX? I can't simply install XP on the iMac and then reinstall/copy across stuff; it NEEDS to be an image. Can you even image smaller HDD's and then place them on large ones, or do they have to be the same size? Recommendations on how I go about this? Edit: It MUST be boot camp. I don't want to virtualize it from within OsX

  I recently converted my external hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS using the Command Prompt. Everything was working fine, I copied a 7GB file to it and everything worked. The next day I switched on my PC, I couldn't and still can't find my external 1.5TB hard drive by my computer. I have about 500 to 800 GB of data on it that I really don't want to lose. Its a Iomega Seagate Freeagent HDD. Has no switch, it switched on automatically, don't know if that helps.
