• compiz hiding unity and all menus

  After updating to Ubuntu 11.10, I was severly disturbed by Dash and wanted to go back to Ubuntu Classic. So I tried to read up, and found Compiz SettingsManager. In there, I clicked "on" never hide menus. For some reason this made all my menus at the top of the screen (volume, network, my login identity, and shutoff, etc) disappear - as well as the quickstart menu to the left (Unity). I am not very technical, so I have a hard time finding any programs now, and I just got on the internet by clicking on a link in a document, that I was fortunate to have on my Desktop. Without it, I wouldn't be able to ask for help. What I wish for is a) to get back the menu at the top, b) to restore the Ubuntu Classic without the irritating launcher and Dash, c) these two things to not disappear every time there is a new version of Ubuntu. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I want to use Frescobaldi (an editor for Lilypond), but the packaged release of lilypond (2.12.3; lilypond is like TeX for scoresheets) in the official repos is a bit old, since I want to use some brand-new features. So I just cloned their git repo and installed it from there. Now my question is, how can I tell apt, that I satisfied the dependency on lilypond manually, so that it doesn't tries to install another copy?

• mounting external hard drive EXT4: "the unlocked device does not have a reckognizable filesystem on it"?

  I'm having problems mounting ext4 partitions(inside a LUKS partition) in external drives. The drives are fine, there is no problem whatsoever with the drives and no filesystem corruption. This happened since a recent automatic system upgrade, and a manual upgrade to kernel 3.12.0. It goes like this: I plug in the external drive Passphrase is asked for luks device luks partition correctly unlocked/opened Instead of proceding with mounting the now exposed ext4 partition there's a pop-up saying: "the unlocked device does not have a recognizable filesystem on it". Same happens in this case: $ gvfs-mount -d /dev/sdc2 Enter a passphrase to unlock the volume The passphrase is needed to access encrypted data on WDC WD250... (250 GB Hard Disk). Password: Error mounting /dev/sdc2: The unlocked device does not have a recognizable file system on it Doing a manual sudo mount /dev/dm-1 /mnt/testfolder works with no errors and there is no problem with the filesystem (fscked). Also there doesn’t seem to be anything useful written to dmesg when this happens. What gives?

• How can I reply to email by sending a delivery failure message?

  Occasionally, I receive unwanted emails, particularly low-volume spam, or email messages falsely addressed to me (possibly due to typos). I don't want to spend the energy to write a personal message, but I do want to let the sender know that the message never arrived at its destination, and that resending it will be useless. In my opinion, a delivery error message to the sender will fill that need. So, the question is if there is an easy way to send error messages back to the sender. Is there any email client out there which supports sending delivery failure messages as a reply to incoming email -- ideally in one click? (Or, which can be configured to do so?) Alternatively, what is the best way to set up an environment that allows me to send delivery failure messages without too much effort per message sent?

• fix pavucontrol Alsa mixer with creative card

  I have been desperately trying to get my creative x-fi soundcard to work with my 10.10 install and I am almost there! I have 1 speaker working and when I open volume control I see that my device is Creative X-fi (Also mixer). However, it appears to be stuck on mono. When I open pavucontrol I get a message that says Connection failed: Connection refused and it exits. Before it closes I can see that playback is set to mono but it won't let me change before it closes. Can someone help me over this last hump? I am running 32 bit 10.10 any advice is much appreciated.

• DFS-R + VSS - Run VSS at all locations or one?

  I have 4 servers, one at each office location, each sharing read/write copies of 1.5TB of data. Changes are replicated 24/7 between all 4 servers via DFS-R. All servers run Windows 2008 R2. I'm interested in implementing VSS (Volume Shadow Services) on this data. I've read that DFS-R and VSS play nicely together, but I'm left with one unanswered question: turn on VSS at all locations or just one (the headquarters). Can I run VSS at all 4 locations safely, or is it wiser to run it at just 1 location? Thanks!

• Copying kernel and initrd problem while setting up a server

  I'm trying to set up a server using PXE and following this (clickable) instruction. But I have a problem in part Creating your NFS installation Right here: Copy kernel and initrd to tftp root. Run these commands ON THE SERVER sudo cp ~/vmlinuz-`uname -r` /tftpboot/ sudo cp ~/initrd.img-`uname -r` /tftpboot/ Actually, I don't know which kernel (server's or client's) should be copied. There isn't any files like those in my home folder on server. Can anybody tell me how to fix it?

• Why doesn't my IDE do background compiling/building?

  Today I develop on a fairly complex computer, it has multiple cores, SSD drives and what not. Still, most of the time I'm programming the computer is leasurely doing nothing. When I need to compile and run/deploy a somewhat complex project at best it still takes a couple of seconds. Why? Now that we're living more and more in the "age of instant" why can't I press F5 in Visual studio and launch/deploy my application instantly? A couple of seconds might not sound so bad but it's still cognitive friction and time that adds up, and frankly it makes programming less fun. So how could compilation be instant? Well, People tend to edit files in different assemblies, what if Visual Studio/The IDE constantly did compilation/and building of everything that I modified anytime that it might be appropriate. Heck if they wanted to go really advanced they could do per-class compilation. The compilation might not work but then it could just silently do nothing (except adding error messages to the error window). Surely todays computer could dedicate a core or two to this task, and if someone found it annoying it could be disabled by option. I know there's probably a thousand technical issues and some fancy shadow copying that would need to be resolved for this to be seamless and practical but it sure would make programming more seamless. Is there any practical reason why this scenario isn't possible? Would the wear and tear of continually writing binaries be too much? Couldn't assemblies be held in memory until deployed/run?

  I was asked this question "How would you find weight of Aeroplane" in an interview and I am not sure why this question was one of the two question asked in the interview. I tried to answer it using all possible ways but could not give the correct answer.(found the correct answer after google search) How much such questions decide your selection in the interview? Here was my approach: 1. If measurement of plane is given then i will calculate volume and multiply by density, will consider fuel weight plus other dead weight. 2. Using water displacement method if i can put plane in water and somehow measure how much water is displaced. But found using google search that right approach was to put place on a ship and mark the level of water on the hull, then remove plane and then ship will go up. And start putting weight on the ship till marked hull reaches the water level.

• Quick run through of the WP7 Developer Tools January 2011

  In case you haven’t heard the latest WP7 Developers Tool update was released yesterday and contains a few goodies. First you need to go and grab the bits here. You can install them in any order, but I installed the WindowsPhoneDeveloperResources_en-US_Patch1.msp first. Then the VS10-KB2486994-x86.exe. They install silently. In other words, you would need to check Programs and Features and look in Installed Updates to see if they installed successfully. Like the screenshot below: Once you get them installed you can try out a few new features. Like Copy and Paste. Just fire up your application and put a TextBox on it and Select the Text and you will have the option highlighted in red above the text. Once you select it you will have the option to paste it. (see red rectangle below). Another feature is the Windows Phone Capability Detection Tool – This tool detects the phone capabilities used by your application. This will prevent you from submitting an app to the marketplace that says it uses x feature but really does not. How do you use it? Well navigate out to either directory: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\CapDetect %ProgramFiles (x86)%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\CapDetect and run the following command: CapabilityDetection.exe Rules.xml YOURWP7XAPFILEOUTPUTDIRECTORY So, in my example you will see my app only requires the ID_CAP_MICROPHONE. Let’s see what the WmAppManifest.xml says in our WP7 Project: Whoa! That’s a lot of extra stuff we don’t need. We can delete unused capabilities safely now. Some of the other fixes are: (Copied straight from Microsoft) Fixes a text selection bug in pivot and panorama controls. In applications that have pivot or panorama controls that contain text boxes, users can unintentionally change panes when trying to copy text. To prevent this problem, open your application, recompile it, and then resubmit it to the Windows Phone Marketplace. Windows Phone Connect Tool – Allows you to connect your phone to a PC when Zune® software is not running and debug applications that use media APIs. • sound stopped working after upgrade to 11.10 on Tuesday 20th March

  My sound card stopped working after a set of updates were installed 2 days ago. Kernal driver is attached. So whats gone pop ? I will boot from CD to check - but I am pretty sure this is a sw and not a hw problem.

• Customize subtitles for QuickTime + Perian

  How do I customize the display of subtitles (e.g. font, size, color, outline, drop shadow) in QuickTime + Perian? I've seen articles on how to do it but it requires Jubler to edit the subtitles. Is there a straightforward way to customize the subtitles within QuickTime or Perian? If there isn't any, what are other alternatives? VLC can't display drop shadows, and can customize the outline. I'm looking for other ways where I'll only have to use QuickTime.

• There's no Sound Mixer menu, missing menu option in Sound Recorder

  I am using: -Ubuntu 11.10 -Skype -PS3 Eye Toy camera to input video and sound This setup has been properly working in former Ubuntu releases. To use the mic already built in on the PS3 Eye Toy camera I open de Sound Recorder app (notice: not inside Skype, from inside Skype it is not possible to do this) that is included in Gnome and then I go to FileSound Mixer, from this menu I can choose Gnome to get the input audio from the PS3 Eye Toy, instead of from the Audio-In of the computer. Now in Ubuntu 11.10 this Sound Mixer menu inside Sound Recorder is missing, Gnome says something like this: gnome-volume-control is not installed in the proper directory Note: I have tried this on Unity, Unity 2D, Gnome Classic, Gnome Classic 2D and Gnome Shell. In all of them the problem is the same. What can I do? Basically what I want to do is to be able to tell the computer to get the audio in from the PS3 Camera. Thanks in advance.

When i sync music by rhythmbox my music player see the music, but not album/artists. When I sync by qlix/gmtp there is information about album, album cover but no artist again. • Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

  After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be? • How to check that I have recovered from Penguin 2.0?

  I have 3 year old website which has been hit by Penguin 2.0 in May. The website traffic dropped almost 30%. I have been working hard from last 2.5 months on the website and my website's traffic recovered in last week of August. In fact, I am receiving more traffic then ever. When I look at the stats, I find my website's search engine visibility has been improved. It is now appearing for more search queries. My website's impressions have also increased. What I am worried about is that my website is nowhere in top 5 pages for keywords having high competition and carrying the highest search volume. They are few in number but important. Should I consider my current situation as recovery or it's just the partial recovery? If it is only partial, then how come traffic is more then it was before penguin 2.0?
