• ec2 instance won't boot!

  So I had a server lose connection while updating to 14.04LTS. Foolishly, it ended up getting rebooted, and now I'm here. I disconnected the volume and mounted it on another system, chrooted it, and updated the kernel. Still no dice. Any idea what the problem could be? Thanks in advance!   Possible Duplicate: Cross-Platform Audio API Suggestions What options are out there these days for audio playback/mixing in C++? Primarily for Windows, but portability (particularly to Mac and iOS) would be desirable. For a small indie game, potentially commercial, though - so I'm looking for something free/low-cost. My requirements are fairly basic - I don't need 3D sound, or many-channels - simple stereo is fine. Just need to be able to mix sound effects and a music stream, maybe decoding one or more compressed audio formats (.ogg/.mp3 etc), with all the basic controls over looping, pitch, volume, etc. Is OpenAL more-or-less the standard choice, or are there other good options out there?

  After installing Precise on my PC, some problems with soud occure. While using Lucid there were no problems. The sound is choppy and distorted in low tones range.   I have an Asus K52Jc and in sound configuration there is no independent sound device for the headphones, and so there's no way to have independent volume for speakers and headphones. Is there a way to have independent devices? • Website directory structure regarding subdomains, www, and "global" content

  I am trying to make a homemade HTTP server. It occurs to me, though, I never fully understood what you might call "relativity" among web pages. I have come across that www. is a subdomain, and I understand its original purpose. IT sounds like, in general, you would redirect (is that 301 or 302?) it to a... non-subdomain, sort of. As in, redirecting www.example.com to example.com. I am not entirely sure how to make this work when retrieving files for an HTTP server though. I would assume that example.com would be the root, and www manifests as a folder within it. I am unsure. There is also the question of multi-level subdomains, e.g. subdomain2.subdomain1.example.com. It seems to me they are structured "backwards", where you go from the root left in folder structure. In this situation, subdomain2 is a directory within subdomain1, which is a directory in the root. Finally, it occurs to me I might want a sort of global location. For example, maybe all subdomains still use an image as a logo. It makes more sense to me that there is one image, rather than each having a copy. In the same way, albiet more doubtfully, you might have global CSS (though that is a bit contrary to the idea of a subdomain in the first place), or a javascript that is commonly used. (more efficient than each having its copy and better for organization purposes). Finally, mabye you have a global 404 page. I think this might be the case where you have user-created subdomains (say bloggername.example.com), where example.com still has a default 404 when either a subdomain does not exist or page does not exists under a valid blogger. I am confused on what the directory structure for this should be. To summarize: Should and how it have a global files not in a subdirectory, how should www. be handled, (or how a now www or other subdomain should be handled), and the pattern for root/subdomain, as well as subdomain within subdomains (order-wise). Sorry this is multiple questions, but I feel at the root they are all related to the directory.

  Hello everyone and thanks in advance. I am new in Ubuntu and have the 12.04 version dual boot with Windows XP. I have the following problem. The laptop can reboot using the reboot option from the menu but it cannot shut down. It starts shutting down, the dots appear but then it freezes and does not turn off. Sometimes it shuts down normally (usually just after an update) but then it loses that capability again. Some strange things, I noticed that when the dots freeze, the USB mouse loses power, BUT the usb-powered cooling pad continues to work The only Fn shortcuts that work all the time are the Volume up, down and mute, BUT sometimes when the other Fn combinations (screen-off etc) work the computer shuts down normally I searched a lot on my own, please help.

• Rendering design. How can I effectively deal with forward, deferred and transparent rendering?

  I have many objects in my game world that all derive from one base class. Each object will have different materials and will therefore be required to be drawn using various rendering techniques. I currently use the following order for rendering my objects. Deferred Forward Transparent (order independent) Each object has a rendering flag that denotes which one of the above methods should be used. The list of base objects in the scene are then iterated through and added to separate lists of deferred, forward or transparent objects based on their rendering flag value. The individual lists are then iterated through and drawn using the order above. Each list is cleared at the end of the frame. This methods works fairly well but it requires different draw methods for each material type. For example each object will require the following methods in order to be compatible with the possible flag settings. object.DrawDeferred() object.DrawForward() object.DrawTransparent() It is also hard to see where methods outside of materials, such as rendering shadow maps, would fit using this "flag & method" design. object.DrawShadow() I was hoping that someone may have some suggestions for improving this rendering process, possibly making it more generic and less verbose?

  I recently switched to Ubuntu 11.10 from Windows. The panel has been acting really weird lately. What happens is when I click on sound icon to change volume, the menu for Bluetooth connectivity pops up. When I try to hover over the popped up menu, the latter disappears the moment I move my mouse. It is just not one icon that has been troubling me. When I click on network icon in the panel, it pops-up the menu for Chat and then the popped-up Chat menu just disappears as soon as there is a movement of the mouse. I hope I was able to explain my situation. I am sure you must be aware of this issue. Please advise. Thanks.

• Mic not working on Lenovo G470

  I used a Lenovo G470 laptop (Core i5 2410M processor, AMD Radeon 6370M and 2GB DDR3 RAM) and I installed Ubuntu 12.04. I can't get the microphone to work. I encountered this type of issue before in my old Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu 10.04/10.10, and installing PulseAudio Volume Control and tweaking a little solves the problem. I tried the same solution to no avail in 12.04. I tried entering the alsa in terminal and my mic is not detected there. Does anybody encountered a similar problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it?   The following is more of a statement than a question - it describes something that may be a pattern. The question is: is this a known pattern? Or, if it's not, should it be? I've had a situation where I had to iterate over two dissimilar multi-layer data structures and copy information from one to the other. Depending on particular use case, I had around eight different kinds of layers, combined in about eight different combinations: A-B-C B-C A-C D-E A-D-E and so on After a few unsuccessful attempts to factor out the repetition of per-layer iteration code, I realized that the key difficulty in this refactoring was the fact that the bottom level needed access to data gathered at higher levels. To explicitly accommodate this requirement, I introduced IterationContext class with a number of get() and set() methods for accumulating the necessary information. This allows me to pass dataStructure1 outside of the context for convenience. In general, either side of the iteration or both sides may be passed via context, as convenient. The key situation points are: complicated code that needs to be invoked in "layers", with multiple combinations of layer types possible at the bottom layer, the information from top layers needs to be visible. The key implementation points are: use of context class to access the data from all levels of iteration complicated iteration code encapsulated in implementation of pure virtual function two interfaces - one aware of underlying iterator, one not aware of it. use of const & to simplify the usage syntax.

  I have servers with Shadow Copies enabled taking snapshots a couple times a day. From the server, if you look at the local devices you can see the Previous Versions being populated reliably. But from remote clients, the ability for an end-user to see the Previous Versions seems to be very hit-or-miss. For the sake of this question you can assume that all my clients are Windows 7 and the Servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there an exhaustive list of everything that is required for end user to see Previous Versions? Are their any requirements for a certain level of share or filesystem permissions, other then read access? Does something need to be open on the firewall, other then what is already in-place for normal Windows networking?

• Ubuntu 12.10 Network Connection menu GUI doesnt work properly

  Many a times I have seen When I click on network connection(besides volume icon), I am unable to select any options. When I hover over VPN connections, the list shows nothing. I have added many VPNs. Network menu becomes non responsive to any clicks. This is annoying because I am not able to connect to any of the VPN connections. "Enable Wireless", "Edit Connections" or any other option doesnt work at all. Restarting ubuntu fixes this issue. But problem starts randomly again and restarting my laptop is the only way to fix it. Is this a known bug? Any ways to fix this prob?

  I get lots of interesting tutorials through feeds and sometimes I implement them step by step, other times I just read through them and note anything that I do not know. When ever I implement them I takes a long time - starting the project, typing the code (as I feel there is no point to copy and paste ), then going back and forth between browser and editing program All in all, I am interested to know how do you learn from the tutorials (I'm no where close to being an expert).
