  • Can a System Analyst come outside of programming?

    - by WeNeedAnswers
Back in the day, if you wanted to be a Systems Analyst you had to work up the ranks from humble programmer. But these days there are University Courses/Programmes based on this topic alone. Is it thus valid for a graduate or post graduate to come into the world and just do systems analyst without doing the graft of being a programmer first, getting to know the nuances of what code is all about.

  • Javascript Alert Return value / Event

    - by Chris
Hey, The question is pretty simple, but i'm not the big AJAX/JS coder, so I have no clue if it's possible. Is there any way that I can check whether or not an alert() was executed on a remote site? Like if I inputted an alert("Welcome to this site"); through a get variable, is there any way to check if it that alert() was actually executed in the browser? And not necessarily through AJAX/JS.

  • How would I find voluntary programming work?

    - by Ben
While I look for a job, I'd like to do something useful with my time. I have a feeling there must be schools or charities or other worthy organisations that could use some of my time, but I've no idea how to go about finding them. Is there a marketplace for this kind of thing? I live in the UK.

  • Possible to bind an event listener to a (hypothetical) onChangeInnerHTML event?

    - by DustMason
In my app, I have an OL tag whose contents are changed by various other dynamic events. Is there some way to put a listener on that OL so that I can execute a function whenever its contents are altered in any way? In this example I need to update a count of items in the list which appears in another spot in the interface. I am using jQuery if that helps. The contents of the OL are being changed with OL.append() and LI.remove(), in case those methods have some special events that I don't know about Thanks!

  • The use of getters and setters for different programming languages [closed]

    - by leonhart88
So I know there are a lot of questions on getters and setters in general, but I couldn't find something exactly like my question. I was wondering if people change the use of get/set depending on different languages. I started learning with C++ and was taught to use getters and setters. This is what I understand: In C++ (and Java?), a variable can either be public or private, but we cannot have a mix. For example, I can't have a read-only variable that can still be changed inside the class. It's either all public (can read and change it), or all private (can't read and can only change inside the class). Because of this (and possibly other reasons), we use getters and setters. In MATLAB, I can control the "setaccess" and "getaccess" properties of variables, so that I can make things read-only (can directly access the property, but can't overwrite it). In this case, I don't feel like I need a getter because I can just do class.property. Also, in Python it is considered "Pythonic" to not use getters/setters and to only put things into properties if needed. I don't really understand why its OK to have all public variables in Python, because that's opposite of what I learned when I started with C++. I'm just curious what other people's thoughts are on this. Would you use getters and setters for all languages? Would you only use it for C++/Java and do direct access in MATLAB and Python (which is what I am currently doing)? Is the second option considered bad? For my purposes, I am only referring to simple getters and setters (just return/set the value and do not do anything else). Thanks!

  • Appending a function to an existing onclick event at page load

    - by tonsils
Hi, I have the following html code that is pre written by the app I am using, which I do not have access to, i.e. <td align="center" class="shuttleControl"> <img src="/i/mydb/icons/shuttle_reload.png" onclick="g_Shuttlep_v61.reset();" alt="Reset" title="Reset"/> <img src="/i/mydb/icons/shuttle_last.png" onclick="g_Shuttlep_v61.move_all();" alt="Move All" title="Move All"/> <img src="/i/mydb/icons/shuttle_right.png" onclick="g_Shuttlep_v61.move();" alt="Move" title="Move" /> <img src="/i/mydb/icons/shuttle_left.png" onclick="g_Shuttlep_v61.remove();" alt="Remove" title="Remove" /> <img src="/i/mydb/icons/shuttle_first.png" onclick="g_Shuttlep_v61.remove_all();" alt="Remove All" title="Remove All" /> </td> Based on the above code, using jQuery, would it be possible that when the page finishes loading, search for the img src "shuttle_last.png" and append to it's onclick call, my own function get_Count(); ? That is, I would then see the following code when I do a view page source for this particular line, i.e.: <img src="/i/mydb/icons/shuttle_last.png" onclick="g_Shuttlep_v61.move_all();get_Count();" alt="Move All" title="Move All"/> Is this possible - if so, would really appreciate a code sample? Thanks.

  • Jquery validation on click event instead of on submit

    - by Mazzi
    I looked all around SOF but no luck to find me answer. It is either too easy or the answer is not just there. What I simply need to do is to validate the form when my <img id='submit'/> is clicked and submit it afterwards. $(document).ready(function(){ $('#submit').click(function() { }); // Validation $('#suzuki_scb').validate({ // My Rules and Messages! }); });

  • getting an onclick event to a select option using js

    - by Vadim.G
    i am having a very frustrating problem. I have this code which filters out my results and inputs them into a select box var syn = <?=json_encode($syn)?>; function filterByCity() { var e = document.getElementById("city_filter"); var city = e.options[e.selectedIndex].value; var selectOptions = document.getElementById('syn_list'); selectOptions.options.length = 0; for (i = 0; i < syn.length; i++) { if (city == syn[i]['city'] || city == 'all') { selectOptions.options[selectOptions.options.length] = new Option(syn[i]['name'], syn[i]['id'] + '" onclick="updateTxtContent(\'' + syn[i]['id'] + '\')'); } } } as you might see i am adding a onclick listener to every select "option" which look great in the source code of the page itself but if i copy it into an edit i notice this my problem is that the "updateTxtContent()" function is not called. <select size="10" name="syn_list" id="syn_list" class="span12" dir="rtl" style="text-align:right;"> <option value="13&quot; onclick=&quot;updateTxtContent('13')">option a</option> <option value="14&quot; onclick=&quot;updateTxtContent('14')">option b</option> obviously there should be a better way to do this that i am not aware of.

  • change elements' css immediately on scroll event

    - by jedierikb
I want to change the background color of in-viewport elements (using overflow: scroll) So here was my first attempt: http://jsfiddle.net/2YeZG/ As you see, there is a brief flicker of the previous color before the new color is painted. Others have had similar problems. Following the HTML5 rocks instructions, I tried to introduce requestAnimationFrame to fix this problem to no avail: http://jsfiddle.net/RETbF/ What am I doing wrong here?

  • Avoid postback on gridview event

    - by purushottam
1 I've got popup (using javascript) working in a kind of gridview. When you click a button on one grid, it displays a popup window containing another grid of information, based on the row clicked in the first grid. This works well... I've enabled editing in the grid that is popped up. When you click edit though, the popup window disappears. If I click the display button in the first grid though to bring the popup window visible again it displays, and is now in edit mode. Is there a way to make postbacks in the popup not close the popup?

  • Bug in Programming Interviews Exposed?

    - by Sam
Hi, I could not find an errata for the 2nd edition of this book. My question concerns the if-statement in the following piece of code. void removeHead (Node ** head) { Node * temp; if (!(*head)) { temp = (*head)->next; delete *head; *head = temp; } } So I understand that the point of the if-statement is to check if the Node is null. However by adding an additional "!" to the evaluation, wouldn't this negate the false value of null? Would it be correct to change it to something like: if (*head) { ... } Also if anyone knows where I can find an official errata for the 2nd edition that would be great. Thanks, Sam

  • c programming malloc question

    - by user535256
Hello guys, Just got query regarding c malloc() function. I am read()ing x number of bytes from a file to get lenght of filename, like ' read(file, &namelen, sizeof(unsigned char)); ' . The variable namelen is a type unsigned char and was written into file as that type (1 byte). Now namelen has the lenght of filename ie namelen=8 if file name was 'data.txt', plus extra /0 at end, that working fine. Now I have a structure recording file info, ie filename, filelenght, content size etc. struct fileinfo { char *name; ...... other variable like size etc }; struct fileinfo *files; Question: I want to make that files.name variable the size of namelen ie 8 so I can successfully write the filename into it, like ' files[i].name = malloc(namelen) ' However, I dont want it to be malloc(sizeof(namelen)) as that would make it file.name[1] as the size of its type unsigned char. I want it to be the value thats stored inside variable &namelen ie 8 so file.name[8] so data.txt can be read() from file as 8 bytes and written straight into file.name[8? Is there a way to do this my current code is this and returns 4 not 8 files[i].name = malloc(namelen); //strlen(files[i].name) - returns 4 //perhaps something like malloc(sizeof(&namelen)) but does not work Thanks for any suggestions Have tried suggested suggestions guys, but I now get a segmentation fault error using: printf("\nsizeofnamelen=%x\n",namelen); //gives 8 for data.txt files[i].name = malloc(namelen + 1); read(file, &files[i].name, namelen); int len=strlen(files[i].name); printf("\nnamelen=%d",len); printf("\nname=%s\n",files[i].name); When I try to open() file with that files[i].name variable it wont open so the data does not appear to be getting written inside the read() &files[i].name and strlen() causes segemntation error as well as trying to print the filename

  • how do you organize your programming work

    - by dole
Hi there, I'm a newbie in the field, but in the near future I have to develop an application for a friend(I've already did some work of the app and the friend is happy). I assume that I need 3 places to store my work, but I'm not sure if this is the best approach. I need your advice, opinion, link, book, blog about this subject. I plan to have: a place where I develop the application a place where I keep a back-up of the application a place with the application ready for use I'll use git in the development stage, but for the later I don't know what tools to use, or which are the good practices. Can you give me an advice?

  • Detecting extended mousedown event on iPhone

    - by Alan Neal
I want to detect an extended mousedown. The following code works in Firefox and Safari... var mousedownTimeout; $('#testButton').mousedown(function(){ mousedownTimeout = window.setTimeout(function(){ alert("Hey, let go."); }, 2000); }); $('#testButton').mouseup(function(){ window.clearTimeout(mousedownTimeout); }); ... but not on the iPhone because (quoting quirksmore.org)... The iPhone fires the mousedown, mouseup and click events in the correct order on a click (tap), but it either fires all three or none at all. Is there a way around this?

  • Introduction to midi programming

    - by bobobobo
So I have a little (musical) keyboard that has USB midi interface. I know you can program to this (many programs accept input from the midi device via USB interface) but where do you begin to program a midi device? Ideally I'm looking for a platform-independent api, through Python or something.
