• How to populate Java (web) application with initial data using Spring/JPA/Hibernate

  I want to setup my database with initial data programmatically. I want to populate my database for development runs, not for testing runs (it's easy). The product is built on top of Spring and JPA/Hibernate. Developer checks out the project Developer runs command/script to setup database with initial data Developer starts application (server) and begins developing/testing then: Developer runs command/script to flush the database and set it up with new initial data because database structures or the initial data bundle were changed What I want is to setup my environment by required parts in order to call my DAOs and insert new objects into database. I do not want to create initial data sets in raw SQL, XML, take dumps of database or whatever. I want to programmatically create objects and persist them in database as I would in normal application logic. One way to accomplish this would be to start up my application normally and run a special servlet that does the initialization. But is that really the way to go? I would love to execute the initial data setup as Maven task and I don't know how to do that if I take the servlet approach. There is somewhat similar question. I took a quick glance at the suggested DBUnit and Unitils. But they seem to be heavily focused in setting up testing environments, which is not what I want here. DBUnit does initial data population, but only using xml/csv fixtures, which is not what I'm after here. Then, Maven has SQL plugin, but I don't want to handle raw SQL. Maven also has Hibernate plugin, but it seems to help only in Hibernate configuration and table schema creation (not in populating db with data). How to do this?

Where exactly should I place the <location inheritInChildApplications="false"> so it ignores all the various web.config settings?

• Logging in worker threads spawned from a pylons application does not seem to work

  I have a pylons application where, under certain cirumstances I want to spawn multiple worker threads to process items in a queue. Right now we aren't making use of a ThreadPool (would be ideal, but we'll add that in later). The main problem is that the worker threads logging does not get written to the log files. When I run the code outside of the pylons application the logging works fine. So I think its something to do with the pylons log handler but not sure what. • Deploying an MVC 2.0 .Net 4.0 application to Windows Server 2003

  I've spent the past couple of nights on this, and have come to the conclusions that I'm doing something wrong! Basically, I have my .Net 4.0 MVC 2.0 application deployed to my 2003 Server and it's constantly giving me the following error: The value for the 'compilerVersion' attribute in the provider options must be 'v4.0' or later if you are compiling for version 4.0 or later of the .NET Framework. To compile this Web application for version 3.5 or earlier of the .NET Framework, remove the 'targetFramework' attribute from the element of the Web.config file. I also have the .Net 3.5 MVC 1.0 application also deployed to the same server (from before the upgrade to .Net 4.0), and it works absolutely fine. I have re-run through Phil Haack's post on IIS6, making the necessary changes for .Net 4.0, but no luck. I have been through the steps in the British Developer's post too, but no joy. I have also tried the steps outlined in Johan's blog post, but the settings he mentions were already enabled. Obviously, I can't simply upgrade to a 2008 box, nor do I want to downgrade my software back to < 4.0 - any other ideas?

  hi there; i'm troubleshooting why i cannot get past the login dialog on an asp.net site configured for windows authentication and impersonation. help me before i switch to os x development and objective-c i have an asp.net 2.0 application and i'm trying to deploy it on windows 7 with iis 7.5. i've created a new site, and bound it to localhost and a fully qualified domain name. the fqdn is in my hosts file, and is redirected to 127.0.0.1 the site is also running with an appdomain i created, with integrated pipeline mode, and the process model identity is set to ApplicationPoolIdentity. web.config includes the following: <trust level="High" /> <authentication mode="Windows" /> <authorization> <deny users="?"/> </authorization> <identity impersonate="true"/> acl on the directory for the site is desperation set to everyone full control, the application pool virtual account (windows 7 thing) is set to full control on the physical directory for the site also. iis authentication has asp.net impersonation enabled, and windows authentication enabled. when i connect to the site as localhost, it permits me to get past the login prompt and the application loads without incident. when i connect to the site as the fqdn set in the host headers bindings for this site/ip/port, i cannot get past the login prompt. clicking cancel throws to a http 401.1 error page. why? thanks very much in advance.

  Hi, I have been facing the same nested UIScrollView problem for long time.I tried some open source codes like Scrolling madness ,three-20 and others but all fails finaly.I am trying to make a photo Viewer application same as iPhone.For that I have created the structure like this:- 1)one View controller. 2)on view of view controller one UIScrollView (i.e inner/parent scroll view) as a child. 3)on inner/parent scroll view number of child scroll views(i.e. outer/child scroll views) ,each represents one page of photos application. 4)On each scroll view one image View on which i am displaying my image. So what I want is when user scrolls the outer scroll view it should scroll horizontally with all the child views so I will get the look and feel of paging in photos application.Also when user is on one specific image(i.e. child/outer scroll view) he should be able to zoom in/out,swipes and perform single/double tapping.I was able to make it work in sdk 2.1,but it dosnt work since sdk 3.0.Please tell me the idea behind your project.Means which scroll view you are subclassing ,in which view to detect touches.How this completely child - parent relation should be. If possible provide any sample code also.

• Large Django application layout

  I am in a team developing a web-based university portal, which will be based on Django. We are still in the exploratory stages, and I am trying to find the best way to lay the project/development environment out. My initial idea is to develop the system as a Django "app", which contains sub-applications to separate out the different parts of the system. The reason I intended to make these "sub" applications is that they would not have any use outside the parent application whatsoever, so there would be little point in distributing them separately. We envisage that the portal will be installed in multiple locations (at different universities, for example) so the main app can be dropped into a number of Django projects to install it. We therefore have a different repository for each location's project, which is really just a settings.py file defining the installed portal applications, and a urls.py routing the urls to it. I have started to write some initial code, though, and I've come up against a problem. Some of the code that handles user authentication and profiles seems to be without a home. It doesn't conceptually belong in the portal application as it doesn't relate to the portal's functionality. It also, however, can't go in the project repository - as I would then be duplicating the code over each location's repository. If I then discovered a bug in this code, for example, I would have to manually replicate the fix over all of the location's project files. My idea for a fix is to make all the project repos a fork of a "master" location project, so that I can pull any changes from that master. I think this is messy though, and it means that I have one more repository to look after. I'm looking for a better way to achieve this project. Can anyone recommend a solution or a similar example I can take a look at? The problem seems to be that I am developing a Django project rather than just a Django application.

• How to use Guice in Swing application

  I have a Swing application that I would like to convert from spaghetti to using dependency injection with Guice. Using Guice to provide services like configuration and task queues is going great but I'm now starting on the GUI of the app and am unsure of how to proceed. The application is basically a JFrame with a bunch of tabs in a JTabbedPane. Each of the tabs is a separate JPanel subclass that lays out the various components and needs services to perform actions when certain buttons are pressed. In the current application, this looks somewhat like this: @Inject public MainFrame(SomeService service, Executor ex, Configuration config) { tabsPane = new JTabbedPane(); // Create the panels for each tab and add them to the tabbedpane somePanel = new SomeTabPanel(service, ex, config); tabsPane.addTab("Panel 1", somePanel); someOtherPanel = new SomeOtherTabPanel(service, ex, config); tabsPane.addTab("Panel 2", someOtherPanel); ... do more stuff } Obviously, this doesn't exactly follow DI best practices. I don't want to have to @Inject the tabs because that would get me a constructor with dozens of parameters. I do want to use Guice to inject the required dependencies into whatever tab objects I need without me having to pass all of those dependencies to the tab constructors. All of the dependencies for the tab objects are services that my Module knows about, so basically all I think I want to do is to ask Guice for the required objects and have them constructed for me.

• Memory allocation error from MySql ODBC 5.1 driver in C# application on insert statement

  I have a .NET Wndows application in C#. It's a simple Windows application that is using the MySql 5.1 database community edition. I've downloaded the MySql ODBC driver and have created a dsn to my database on my local machine. • WCF Service Layer in n-layered application: performance considerations

  Hi all. When I went to University, teachers used to say that in good structured application you have presentation layer, business layer and data layer. This is what I heard for more than 5 years. When I started working I discovered that this is true but sometimes is better to have more than just three layers. Two or three days ago I discovered this article by John Papa that explain how to use Entity Framework in layered application. According to that article you should have: UI Layer and Presentation Layer (Model View Pattern) Service Layer (WCF) Business Layer Data Access Layer Service Layer is, to me, one of the best ideas I've ever heard since I work. Your UI is then completely "diconnected" from Business and Data Layer. Now when I went deeper by looking into provided source code, I began to have some questions. Can you help me in answering them? Question #0: is this a good enterpise application template in your opinion? Question #1: where should I host the service layer? Should it be a Windows Service or what else? Question #2: in the source code provided the service layer expose just an endpoint with WSHttpBinding. This is the most interoperable binding but (I think) the worst in terms of performances (due to serialization and deserializations of objects). Do you agree? • Cocoa Bindings and Application Preferences - Crash

  Using the document provided by Apple to create an application preferences window that doesn't require any extra code, I seem to have triggered a crash that cannot be traced by me. While the stuff from Apple is older, I believe I have the settings pretty much the same as shown here: When I run my application (Hcode) and go to the preferences menu item, it brings up the proper window with the defaults I specified in the bindings with the exception of the Spaces per tab is blank (no idea how to fix this). • Facebook Connect application inside iframe not working in IE7

  I am building a Facebook Connect application that runs inside a Google gadget. Being a gadget means that the application runs inside an iframe. Inside the application, there is a form that allows registered users to post comments. The submission is made using AJAX, but I get the same results with a normal form. The problem is that I need to get the user's facebook id. In Firefox, it works fine, but on Internet Explorer 7, I get the following error: 'A session key is required for calling this method' I believe that this is due to the way IE handles third-party cookies, because if I go to Internet options / Privacy / Advanced, and check Override automatic cookie handling and accept all cookies, it works fine. I cannot pass the Facebook id from the javascript, because anyone could tamper it. EDIT: If I open the content of the iframe directly, the app works fine. The problem is really due to the IFRAME and IE security model. What am I doing something wrong? How can I work around this problem?

• E-commerce platform for custom application integration

  We are building an online subscription-based website and I'm looking for recommendations on which e-commerce platform to use for the checkout process. Requirements include: Only four products. The sign-up process of the site is heavily customized, and after checkout the user should automatically get logged into the subscriber area. Subscriptions will last one year and can be renewed manually. Support for coupons/discount codes at a later point. Since the entire application is custom, we've weighed building a custom checkout but are strongly leaning towards using existing software to avoid having to build lots of admin reporting as well as a coupon engine down the road. The two questions we're pondering are: Is it better to a) build our application custom and use whatever e-commerce software we select just for the payment piece, or b) use the e-commerce software as the basis and build our application around it/as a module/etc? Which e-commerce platform should we use? I've looked into a variety of off the shelf e-commerce software, but it's not clear to me which would be easiest to integrate with. I've researched on the Web and looked at many of the threads on SO to compiled a list of potential candidates: www.magentocommerce.com/ (seems difficult to integrate with) www.prestashop.com/ www.nopcommerce.com/ www.opencart.com/ www.cubecart.com/ www.spreecommerce.com/ www.interspire.com/ www.tradingeye.com/ We're most concerned with the level of effort required with ramping up on the software and then doing the integration with our custom functionality. We're most proficient with PHP, ASP.NET and some ROR and are only considering those technologies. We prefer open source, but would be open to commercial if there's a significant upside. Any experiences with similar projects and advice is greatly appreciated.

  I want to do the following things in my application 1) I want to display whether any USB drive is inserted or not in my application to prompt the user to insert a USB drive. I just want to notify the user if any USB dirve is inserted else prompt him to insert one using a label or something (i want to avoid messagebox as it will keep appearing whenever a device is inserted or removed. It will be irritating for the end user) in my Visual C# WinForm Application. If any USB drive is present display "USB drive detected" in the label. The user may add one or more USB sticks but the status will remain same. When there is none then the status of the label will change to "No USB drives found.Please insert a USB drive". 2) When one or more USB drive is added the volume name with the drive letter for example "James(F:)" is added to the Combobox list. • Selecting a Java framework for large application w/ only ONE user

  I am building a large application that will be hosted on an AWS server. I'm trying to select a web framework for assisting me with code organization, template design, and generally presentation aspects. Here are some points of consideration: Require security/login/user authentication. I may add the ability in the future to allow more than just an administrator to access the web app, but it is not a public facing website. AJAX support would be helpful. There are a couple widgets that I don't want to recreate. One is a tree object, where the user can expand/contract items in the list, can create new branches, add/edit objects. This would be better off in some dynamic view rather than all done in ugly html. Generally, this is just to provide the application with a face for control, management, and monitoring. Having an easier time adding buttons, CSS, AJAX widgets are great additions though, but not the primary purpose. I'm considering: Wicket Spring Seam GWT Stripe and the list goes on, as I'm sure you all know. I originally planned on using GWT, but then started to feel that GWT didn't cover my primary needs. I could be wrong about this, but there seems to be a lot of support for GWT AND Wicket/Spring. All of this 'getting lost in java frameworks' got me thinking outside the java realm for a framework that would suit my needs that was a clear option, like: JRuby/Rails Jython/Django Groovy/Grails Guice (just throwing this in there... I don't clearly understand the main purposes of all these frameworks. It doesn't seem like DInjection is something I need for a single purpose application) Thanks as always. This community makes Googling for esoteric programming information an order of magnitude better.

• Starting CLI application programmatically does not work depending on arguments

  I try to start plink.exe (PuTTY Link, the command line utility/version of PuTTY) from a C# application to establish an SSH reverse tunnel, but it does no longer work as soon as I pass the correct parameters. What does that mean? The following works as expected: it opens a command line window, displays that I forgot to pass the password for the -pw argument quits, and shows the prompt. I know it got the arguments, since it specifically requests the one thing I did not provide. Is there a way plink.exe notices it's not running in a real shell? If yes, how can I circumvent it, like the Start Menu "prompt" does? I hope this question is right on SO, since it, though specifically for a single application, revolves around launching it successfully programmatically.

I just want to notify the user if any USB dirve is inserted else prompt him to insert one using a label or something (i want to avoid messagebox as it will keep appearing whenever a device is inserted or removed. It will be irritating for the end user) in my Visual C# WinForm Application. If any USB drive is present display "USB drive detected" in the label. The user may add one or more USB sticks but the status will remain same. When there is none then the status of the label will change to "No USB drives found.Please insert a USB drive". 2) When one or more USB drive is added the volume name with the drive letter for example "James(F:)" is added to the Combobox list. • Sysdeo Tomcat DevLoader - Hot deploy of java class causes whole application to restart

  Hi, I am using sysdeo tomcat plugin 3.2.1 with eclipse 3.5.1 (Galileo) and tomcat 5.5.23 on windows XP. I can get tomcat plugin working in eclipse, and have extracted devloader.zip into [tomcat]\server\classes. I have also updated the context and now it has this entry: <Context path="/myapp1" reloadable="true" docBase="F:\Work\eclipse_workspace\myapp1" workDir="F:\Work\eclipse_workspace\myapp1\work" > <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.SystemOutLogger" verbosity="4" timestamp="true"/> <Loader className="org.apache.catalina.loader.DevLoader" reloadable="true" debug="1" useSystemClassLoaderAsParent="false" /> </Context> I have activated devloader (in Project Properties Tomcat Devloader Classpath) and have 'checked' all my classes and jars, I haven't 'checked' commons-loggin.jar jsp-api.jar, servlet-api.jar. So on launching tomcat via the plugin, I can get it running with devloader as shown in eclipse console view [DevLoader] Starting DevLoader [DevLoader] projectdir=F:\Work\eclipse_workspace\myapp1 [DevLoader] added file:/F:/Work/eclipse_workspace/myapp1/WEB-INF/classes/ [DevLoader] added file:/F:/Work/eclipse_workspace/myapp1/WEB-INF/lib/activation.jar However, if I even add a single System.out.println into any java file and save it, the whole application gets reloaded (takes ~80 sec) which is as good as stopping/starting tomcat itself. I've tried adding -Xdebug in JAVA_OPTS in the catalina.bat but no luck :( Can you please guide where I may be doing it wrong.. Please note that I can 'redeploy' the whole application on tomcat but that's not what I need, I am looking to be able to make small changes in java classes 'on-the-fly' while coding/debugging without having to wait for complete app restart. Another annoyance is that restarting tomcat/application causes the session/debug progress to be lost.. Can you please guide me how to go about it. PS: I am not using any ant/maven scripts explicitly, just relying on eclipse to do the build for me (which it does).

• Invalid iPhone Application Binary

  I'm trying to upload an application to the iPhone App Store, but I get this error message from iTunes Connect: The binary you uploaded was invalid. The signature was invalid, or it was not signed with an Apple submission certificate. My guess is that it is not properly signed. I have downloaded my App Store distribution certficate, but I can't figure out how to "sign" my application with it. The SDK's documentation about code signing is not very helpful. (FWIW, I can install the app on my iPhone just fine using the development provisioning profile.) However, it is possible that I screwed things up on a more basic level. Here's what I did to try to prepare it for upload: In Xcode, select the Device|Release target Select the target and click the Info button. Change "Code Signing Identity" to "iPhone Distribution", and change "Code Signing Provisioning Profile" to my App Store distribution profile. Build Go to the directory where the built MyApp.app bundle is, control-click and choose "Compress" to create MyApp.zip Upload MyApp.zip to the App Store via iTunes Connect (which resulted in the above error message). Can anybody give me any hints? Edit: Found someone with the same problem. • Creating cookieless application on development machine with asp.net

  I tried posting this on ServerFault with no luck so i am trying here. I am thinking about setting up a new domain to host static content on my website and have it cookieless just like Stackoverflow with their static domain. So before going ahead and buying the domain and setting it up I wanted to test it on my developement machine first under localhost (I have to mention that i am planning on having IIS running on my new domain for the static files). I therefore created a new application under IIS and disabled session state and forms authentication. When my main application needs resources like css, images and js , I use the path to the "static" application where they are hosted. The problem is that when I look at the request and the response for the requested files, they still have the session_id cookie defined as well as the asp.net authentication cookie. Is it at all possible to accomplish what i am trying to do on a development machine or do i have to just go ahead and purchase the new domain which hopefully with make things right? I tried to read about cookieless domain but can't figure out what i might be missing.

I've added the network service user to the Performance Monitor Users group to no avail. Access to the registry key 'Global' is denied. Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key 'Global' is denied. ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via , the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user. To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.
