• Javascript Array Scope - newbie here

  So, I am learning Javascript while playing white Google Calendar APIs and I just can't figure how this piece of code is working this way: var entriesResult = []; var data = new Date(2010,3,22,17,0,0); var callback = function(result) { var entries = result.feed.getEntries(); if (entries.length != 0) { entriesResult = eventsManager(entries, 0, data); window.alert("inner entriesResult " + entriesResult.length); } } this.service.getEventsFeed(this.query, callback, handleGDError); window.alert("outer entriesResult " + entriesResult.length); eventsManager() is a function that returns an array of Objects. getEventsFeed() it's an API function: it queries the service and pass a "feed root" (a feed with selected items) to the callback function. Why the first alert (inner..) outputs a valid entriesResult.length while the second one (outer..) always outputs a 0? I tought javascript arrays are always passed by reference, what's wrong whit my code? Thank you :)

• NSNumberFormatter weirdness with NSNumberFormatterPercentStyle

  Hi, I need to parse some text in a UITextField and turn it into a percentage. Ideally, I'd like the user to either type something like 12 or 12% into the text field and have that be parsed into a number as a percentage. Here's what's weird. The number formatter seems to not like 12 and seems to divide 12% by 10000 instead of 100: NSNumberFormatter *formatter = [[[NSNumberFormatter alloc] init] autorelease]; [formatter setNumberStyle:NSNumberFormatterPercentStyle]; NSNumber *n1 = [formatter numberFromString:@"12"]; NSNumber *n2 = [formatter numberFromString:@"12%"]; NSLog(@"n1 = %@", n1); // n1 = (null) NSLog(@"n2 = %@", n2); // n2 = 0.0012 How do I get the formatter to return 0.12 as expected? EDIT: it seems to only happen if the formatter fails first. If the formatter does not fail it returns 0.12 as expected. Strange.

  Hi, I wan't to compare two strings in a SQL request so I can retrieve the best match, the aim is to propose to an operator the best zip code possible. For example, in France, we have Integer Zip code, so I made an easy request : SELECT * FROM myTable ORDER BY abs(zip_code - 75000) This request returns first the data closest of Paris. Unfortunatelly, United Kingdom have zip code like AB421RS, so my request can't do it. I see in SQL Server a function 'Difference' : http://www.java2s.com/Code/SQLServer/String-Functions/DIFFERENCEworkoutwhenonestringsoundssimilartoanotherstring.htm But I use MySQL.. Is there anyone who have a good idea to do the trick in one simple request ? PS : the Levenshtein Distance will not do it, as I really wan't to compare string like if they were number. ABCDEF have to be closer to AWXYZ than to ZBCDEF.

• How to implement List, Set, and Map in null free design?

  Its great when you can return a null/empty object in most cases to avoid nulls, but what about Collection like objects? In Java, Map returns null if key in get(key) is not found in the map. The best way I can think of to avoid nulls in this situation is to return an Entry<T> object, which is either the EmptyEntry<T>, or contains the value T. Sure we avoid the null, but now you can have a class cast exception if you don't check if its an EmptyEntry<T>. Is there a better way to avoid nulls in Map's get(K)? And for argument sake, let's say this language don't even have null, so don't say just use nulls.

  I'm trying to use ServletContext.getResource to retrieve a java.net.url reference to an image file (which I will then include in a PDF library using iText). When I use ServletContext.getRealPath("picture.jpg"), I get back a string URL. However, getResource always returns null. Example 1: String picture = ServletContext.getRealPath("picture.jpg"); // picture contains a non-null String with the correct path URL pictureURL = ServletContext.getResource(picture); // pictureURL is always null Example 2: URL pictureURL = ServletContext.getResource("picture.jpg"); // pictureURL is always null So what is the correct way to build a java.net.URL object pointing to a file in my webapps folder? Why does getRealPath work but not getResource? In case it helps at all, here is my folder structure webapps - mySite - picture.jpg Does my picture need to be stored in either WEB-INF or WEB-INF/classes to be read by getResource?

• Value object getter

  Hi, I've got a value object, which stores info for example amount. The getAmount() getter returns amount in cents. However in various places, we need to get amount in dollar. There are 2 approaches I can think of: write a convert method and place it in a utility class. add a getAmountInDollar() getter in the value object. I prefer the second approach. What do you think? What are pros and cons of both approaches?

  I'm working through an iPhone development book* without really knowing Objective C. For the most part I'm able to follow what's going on, but there are a few method declarations like the one below that I'm having a bit of trouble parsing. For example: - (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger) section { return [self.controllers count]; //controllers is an instance variable of type NSArray in this class } It looks this is a method called numberOfRowsInSection, and it returns an NSInteger, and takes an NSInteger as a parameter which is locally called 'section'. But I don't understand all the references to tableView, or why this takes a parameter when it is not used within the method. Can somebody clarify this?   I'm trying to compare two strings. One stored in a file, the other retrieved from the user (stdin).   For a given SQL stored proc or function, I'm trying to obtain its input and output parameters, where applicable, in a Winforms app I'm creating to browse objects and display their parameters and other attributes. So far I've discovered the SQL system function object_definition, which takes a given sysobjects.id and returns the text of that object; also discovered via search this post which describes extracting the parameters in the context of a app using the ADO.NET method DeriveParameters in conjunction with some caching for better performance; and for good measure found some helpful system stored procs from this earlier post on Hidden Features of SQL Server. I'm leaning towards implementing the DeriveParameters method in my C# app, since parsing the output of object_definition seems messy, and I haven't found a hidden feature in that post so far that would do the trick. Is DeriveParameters applicable to both functions and stored procs for purposes of retreiving their parameters, and if so, could someone please provide an example?

• Extending the RoleProvider GetRolesForUser()

  The GetRolesForUser() method in the RoleProvider takes the user login name and returns the list of roles for that user. But in my application this is not enough, I need a few more pieces of information to be able to get the user's roles. How can I get this extra information into the method? I have it in the Session, but I found out that Session is not available in the RoleProvider. What I had in mind was putting this extra info in some class that extends MembershipUser, assuming I can get to it inside the RoleProvider. But I don't know how to create the CustomMembershipUser and make it part of the MembershipProvider. Is this even possible? The easy way out would be using cookies, but I'm trying to keep away from it.

  I'm having trouble with the MyClass::function(); style of calling methods and can't figure out why. Here's an example (I'm using Kohana framework btw): class Test_Core { public $var1 = "lots of testing"; public function output() { $print_out = $this->var1; echo $print_out; } } I try to use the following to call it, but it returns $var1 as undefined: Test::output() However, this works fine: $test = new Test(); $test->output(); I generally use this style of calling objects as opposed to the "new Class" style, but I can't figure out why it doesn't want to work.

  I have data like: Audio 1 File 10 Audio 2 Audio 3 File 11 Audio 13 Audio 22 File 20 Test 22 Audio 10 File 1 File 2 I need it order first by the text (i.e. Audio, File, Test) and then by number (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22 etc.) The problem is that sorting it returns something like this: Audio 1 Audio 10 Audio 13 Audio 2 Audio 22 Audio 3 File 1 File 10 File 11 File 2 File 20 Test 22 While the result I want is: Audio 1 Audio 2 Audio 3 Audio 10 Audio 13 Audio 22 File 1 File 2 File 10 File 11 File 20 Test 22 If they were just numbers (i.e. without the audio, file, test) then I could just sort numerically. However, how can I sort here first by text and then by number.

• ubuntu 10.04 logs itself out overnight

  Every night when I leave work, I lock the screen via ubuntu's "power" button in the top right hand panel. When I come to work in the morning, I'm greeted with the log-in screen. • Where are config files for class libraries physically located?

  My guess is that this question will fall under the category of "duh", but, nevertheless, I'm confused. When using config files in, for example, a Windows Forms Application, the config file can be found in C:\Program files\CompanyName\ProductName\Application.exe.config. However, with the class library I'm developing I do not see a "ClassLibrary.dll.config" file in the install folder after installing it (in tandem with another project) from Visual Studio. Even though I do not see the file anywhere, retrieving data from it works correctly. Plus, running the following code from a method within the class library returns the path you would expect: C:\Program files\CompanyName\ProductName\ClassLibrary.dll.config. • classes and static variables in shared libraries

  I am trying to write something in c++ with an architecture like: App -- Core (.so) <-- Plugins (.so's) for linux, mac and windows. The Core is implicitly linked to App and Plugins are explicitly linked with dlopen/LoadLibrary to App. The problem I have: static variables in Core are duplicated at run-time -- Plugins and App have different copys of them. at least on mac, when a Plugin returns a pointer to App, dynamic casting that pointer in App always result in NULL. Can anyone give me some explanations and instructions for different platforms please? I know this may seem lazy to ask them all here but I really cannot find a systematic answer to this question.

  hi, i have an project with name called(dbservice layer) which is in path: d:\webservice\DBService. here i have an webservice which connects to DB and returns an object of an class. once i added an reference here i get an url:http://localhost:2371/Jobs.svc now i have another project name (UILayer) whic is in path: E:\School\UILayer i added an service reference here with url as http://localhost:2371/Jobs.svc but i get an messgae telling service is unable why is that happening. if both my webserivce layer and ui layer are in same project. then i able to use the webserive in the ui layer. and get the required output so i wanted to know is there any way we can acesss the webserive from one project to another project thanks in advance prince
