• How should I configure backup of my server?

  I have just rented a dedicated server. If it helps this is the config I have: CPU1 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz (Cores 8) RAM 15975 MB Disk /dev/sda doesn't contain a valid partition table (=> /dev/sda doesn't) Disk /dev/sdc doesn't contain a valid partition table (=> /dev/sdc doesn't) Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table (=> /dev/sdb doesn't) Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB (=> 114 GIB) Disk /dev/sdc: 3000.6 GB (=> 2861 GIB) Disk /dev/sdb: 3000.6 GB (=> 2861 GIB) /dev/sda is a 120GB SSD. This is where I have Ubuntu/lamp installed. It's the drive that will run my site. With the account I got two other drives of 3000GB each which I really don't need but they came with the account. I figured I could use these to back up my main 120gb drive. So a couple of things I wondered were: Should I use these for backups? How should I back up. The data I want to back up is a user uploads directory full of images and the database. Everything else is either in a code repo or backed up some other way. For example, it would be nice to know there is a disk image of the 120gb drive somewhere that I can copy over should there be any problems but equally I don't mind doing a fresh install of all the software and copying over just the images and database dump. Thanks for your advice! (also, happy to not use the two other drives and backup elsewhere if it's more sensible)

• Is it possible to theme Windows 7 like XP?

  Everybody seems to mean the window frame colour and a set of desktop background pictures when they're talking about Windows 7 themes. Does anybody remember what themes used to be in Windows XP? You could actually alter the appearance of the window frame, how close buttons and menu popups looked, put a texture on the taskbar, all those funny things. Microsoft themselves have published a number of XP themes over time (Luna on XP, Royal on MCE2005, Zune later on). I don't say that most of those and the numerous third party XP themes were beautiful or even practical. But it was possible to create something nice. In Windows 7 (I suppress the existence of Windows Vista...) such a theme could well be used to increase readability to a level before Aero Glass again. I mean, you cannot really tell whether a Glass window is active or not. I've been tweaking the colours and transparency levels a lot recently but the only safe indicator is the close button: it's red when the window is active, it's colourless otherwise. Then there's the window title. It is always painted black, on however dark a background. Again, regardless of whether the window is active or not. Turning off Aero is not an option in Windows 7 anymore. Classic design looks just ugly there. It already wasn't exactly looking good on XP with the wide start menu. So, can we increase the readability of the Windows 7 UI with themes like in XP or didn't Microsoft learn a thing since the Windows 7 Preview "Vista"?

  I would like to cache the response of an redirect. (Cache the request to some site which returns a redirect and cache the second request which returns the actual content.) • LMDE detects a wireless card, but can't use it

  LMDE can see my wireless card, and correctly identifies it, but it refuses to let me turn it on through the shiny graphical interface. Is there a way to use the non-shiny terminal to turn on my wireless? One small tidbit I noticed was the stated version; it says the version is 00. I believe that's hexadecimal for 0, which may indicate something screwy with the software.   Hi, I'm about to install a server. Some context: My HDD is 1 TB and I have 2 GB RAM Ubuntu Server Lucid Lynx AMD 64 I will use OpenVZ and have most functionality separated into containers. To support disk quotas I need to use ext3 (not ext4) for the container partition. Each time I reboot the server I want to be forced to login through SSH and mount the encrypted partitions by typing my password (if someone steals the server, no critical data should be available). I want to have as much as possible encrypted. Yet I want to be able to login through SSH as I don't have a monitor or keyboard at the server. I am not sure how big I need my partitions to be. Being able to resize them later would be nice. I guess it implies using LVM? But the manual partition mount using SSH is also very important (in fact it's more important, if I have to pick one). How do you recommend that I partition the HDD? If I have daemons which needs the encrypted partitions, will they fail and can I just restart them after mounting the needed partitions?

• How can I generate filesystem images that are usable on many different virtualization systems?

  I have written a script that generates a root filesystem image (based on Debian lenny) suitable for User-Mode Linux. (Essentially this script creates a filesystem image, mounts it with a loop device, uses debootstrap to create a lenny install, sets up a static IP for TUN/TAP networking, adds public keys for login by SSH and installs a web application.) These filesystem images work pretty well with UML, but it would be nice to be able to generate similar images that people can use on alternative virtualization software, and I'm not familiar with these options at all. In particular, since the idea is to use this image as a standalone server for testing the web application, it's important that the networking works. I wonder if anyone can suggest what would be involved in customizing such root filesystem images such that they could be used with other virtualization software, such as VMware, Xen or as an Amazon EC2 instance? Two particular concerns are: If such systems don't use a raw filesystem image (e.g. they need headers with metadata or are compressed in some particular way) do there exist tools to convert between the different formats? I assume that in the filesystem, at least /etc/network/interfaces will have to be customized, but are more involved changes likely to be necessary? Many thanks for any suggestions...

• Deployment and monitoring tools for java/tomcat/linux environment

  I'm a developer for many years, but don't have tons of experience in ops, so apology if this is a newbe question. In my company we run a web service written in Java mainly based on a Tomcat web server. We have two datacenters with about 10 hosts each. Hosts are of several types: Dababase, Tomcats, some offline java processes, memcached servers. All hosts are Linux CentOS Up until now, when releasing a new version to production we've been using a set of inhouse shell script that copy jars/wars and restart the tomcats. The company has gotten bigger so it has become more and more difficult operating all this and taking code from development, through QA, staging and to production. A typical release many times involves human errors that cost us precious uptime. Sometimes we need to revert to last known good and this isn't easy to say the least... We're looking for a tool, a framework, a solution that would provide the following: Supports the given list of technology (java, tomcat, linux etc) Provides easy deployment through different stages, including QA and production Provides configuration management. E.g. setting server properties (what's the connection URL of each host etc), server.xml or context configuration etc Monitoring. If we can get monitoring in the same package, that'll be nice. If not, then yet another tool we can use to monitor our servers. Preferably, open source with tons of documentation ;) Can anyone share their experience? Suggest a few tools? Thanks!

• Questions for anyone who has used Sun Type 7 keyboards

  So I noticed that Oracle is still selling Sun Type 7 keyboard and mouse packages. I was thinking of buying one for a Linux box at my house so I had easy access to some of the extra keys such as Compose and Alt-GR. I have some questions though before I do for anyone who has used these -- it's been a very long time since I've used an actual Sun keyboard. They show that both a PC and UNIX layout is available. Unfortunately, I cannot find anywhere a clear picture of both layouts to determine the difference. Can anyone post pictures of the 2 different layouts for me to take a look at? I don't remember what some of the "Solaris shortcut" keys do, like Props, Front, Stop, and Again. Are these vestiges from OpenWindows? Do they have any usage on a modern Solaris like OpenSolaris running Gnome? Do they automatically map to anything useful on Linux, or am I going to have to map them myself to something with XModMap? When I last used a Sun keyboard, I remember it having a rather mushy feel to it, so I am wondering if any touch typists could weigh in on whether this keyboard "feels nice" for day to day touch typing.   Every morning I think about what I am going to do today. So I take a paper and start to write things like: [ ] Call Mr. XYZ [ ] Answer Support E-Mails [ ] Reduce website header height by 20 px [ ] Create new navigation bar icons And every time I'm done with something, I paint a checkmark in this square. On paper. It would be fun to have something like this as an application. But I don't want a heavy project management tool or integration with email. It should be like download, install, use without fat configuration and steep learning curve. usually I don't schedule my to do's, I just write down every day what I want to accomplish today. For my experience it doesn't make sense to plan what to do next week, because next week everything looks totally different. Would be cool if such a simple utility exists. At the moment I try just using textEdit and deleting rows which are done. With a nice interface, this would be much more fun.

  Currently we have the following setup. Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Tomcat on 8080 (TA) Box B running Tomcat on 8080 (TB) TA and TB are running behind LB. For now it's pretty complicated and manual job to take Box A or Box B out of LB to do the zero downtime deployment. I am thinking to do something like this: Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Nginx on 8080 (NA) Box A running Tomcat on 8081 (TA1) Box A running Tomcat on 8082 (TA2) Box B running Nginx on 8080 (NB) Box B running Tomcat on 8081 (TB1) Box B running Tomcat on 8082 (TB2) Basically LB will be directing traffic between NA and NB now. On each of Nginx's we'll have TA1, TA2 and TB1, TB2 configured as upstream servers. Once one of the upstreams's healthcheck page is unresponsive (shutdown) the traffic goes to another one (HttpHealthcheckModule module on Nginx). So the deploy process is simple. Say, TA1 is active with version 0.1 of the app. Healthcheck on TA1 is OK. We start TA2 with Healthcheck on it as ERROR. So Nginx is not talking to it. We deploy app version 0.2 to TA2. Make sure it works. Now, we switch the Healthcheck on TA2 to OK, switch Healthcheck to TA1 to ERROR. Nginx will start serving TA2, and will remove TA1 out of rotation. Done! And now same with the other box. While it sounds all cool and nice, how do we "starve" the Nginx? Say we have pending connections, some users on TA1. If we just turn it off, sessions will break (we have cookie-based sessions). Not good. Any way to starve traffic to one of the upstream servers with Nginx? Thanks!

  I accidentally deleted my Dell xps 14 touch pad disabling driver and I don't know where to find it and reinstall it. I have already tried Dell support and without luck (I don't want to install something that I don't know). Would anyone please send me the link to that driver To clarify: There is this Fn shortcut key used to disable/enable touch pad in Dell xps14 and when press it orange light on touch pad will lit and touch pad will stop working. But after deleting the driver that responsible for that function,it stopped working. My service center is almost 600 miles away and he said that he forgot to add it last time he fix my laptop. Since the internet connection at his place is slow,he can't send me from mail either.So can anyone send me the link for that driver. Since I don't really know about drivers it would be really nice if some one show me the driver name or link. Sorry,here is my laptop service tag "C37KWL1".I don't know how to find the specific driver for that function key.My dell has a short cut for disabling touchpad with picture on it along with the other multimedia short cut key with picture. since xps 15 and 17 have seperated touch key instead of on function keys mine have to choose function key or multimedia key through setting.To be honest my service center tech guy forgot to install it when he repair it and can't send me the file(which is about over 20mb or something according to him)for some reason.All i need is that particular file.

  Hello, I've not run backups for the past dont't remember anymore years for my personal stuff until waking up lately and realising contrary to my prior belief: Actually. I care! :) Now I have a central data server at home where I want to attach an external media to, to which I want to save backups of my most important stuff, like years of self-written scripts, database dumps, you name it. I've tinkered with rsync+ssh over the last two years, also tried tar over ssh, but don't know the simplest and most easy to maintain way to do it yet. Heres my workload: A typical LAMP-Server (<5GB Data) which I'd like to backup fully so lots of small files connected via 10Mbit My personal stuff (<750GB Data) from a Mac connected via GE My passwords in an encrypted container (100Mb) from OpenBSD connected via serial-PPP My E-Mail from the last ten years (<25GB) as Maildir which I need to keep in readable format Some archives (tar.*) which I need to backup only once and keep in readable format (Deleted my ideas, as I'm here for suggestions) What I need: 1. Use an ssh-tunnel for data transfer 2. Be quick with lots of small files 3. Keep revisions 4. Be sure the data I save is not corrupted 5. Intelligent resume functions and be able to deal with network congestion :) 6. Compressed and optionally encrypted storage 7. Be able to extract data from backup easily (filesystem like usage would be nice) How would and with what software would you backup this stuff?   To cut the story short, I can't buy an item (server/cpu/motherboard/ram) that costs more than USD 330. However, I can combine them, meaning, I can buy a CPU that costs USD 330 and motherboard that costs USD 330. With this limitation, I can't buy a powerful 1U server which will definitely costs me more USD 330. With that in mind, I was hoping to build a powerful desktop PC which will be used as a database server. However, through my experience, desktop PC doesn't last very long, usually the motherboard will just die by itself after 1 or 2 years. So, what would you guys recommend me to buy with this kind of budget? Every item must be <= USD 330. Will be used as a MySQL server. RAID would be nice. 1TB is pretty big for my data. I do not need external graphic card (onboard would do just fine), mouse, keyboard, monitor. Linux friendly. One ethernet port is good enough. It's important that those hardware is made of components that will last long (at least 3 years or something). The server will be placed in an air conditioned room, but a good ventilation for the server is always preferred. I won't overclock it. Intel processor is preferred. Thanks in advance.

  A person who is not very computer-savvy needs to store 130GB of photos. The key parameters are: an non-negligible probability that the company selling the storage will be existing, and the data accessible, for at least five years data should be considered safe once uploaded reasonable terms of service: google drive reserving the right to literally do anything they want with their user's data is not acceptable; the possibility that the CIA might look at those pictures is not considered a threat easy to use from Windows, preferably as a drive no nerve-wracking limitations ("cannot upload 10GB/day" or "files 500MB" etc.) that serve no purpose other than pushing the user to the next-higher price plan some upgrade plan: there's currently 10-30GB of new photos per year, with a tendency to increase, which might bust a 150GB limit next January ability to somehow sort the pictures: currently they are sorted into folders, but something alike (tags) would be just as good, if easy enough to apply of course, the pricing is important (although there's a reason this is the last bullet; reasonable data safety is considered more important) Nice to have, but not necessary features would be: additional features related to photos (thumbnail generation, album sharing etc.) access from web and other platforms than Windows (smart phones) Let me stress this again: The person in need of that is able to copy pictures from the camera to the computer, can copy files in the explorer, and uses a web email service. • Things to consider when building a continuous integration server?

  I'm new to continuous integration, but immediately realize its value, and I want to get one set up right away. I have played with TeamCity and have it working in a VM great. Now, I don't want to spend money on another system, so I was planning on just doing the VM again on a faster machine (i.e. my dev system). There are a few questions that come to mind with this: Hard disk allocation - how big should it be? Sure, 60GB seems like more than enough, but people also used to think that we'd never need more than 64KB of RAM Backups - is it even important to back up the integration server? Sure, I guess it's nice so that one doesn't have to go through the entire configuration process again, but I would think that's about it. I could snapshot my VM every time I do a configuration change, and then do a backup of applications only (ignore the buildAgent stuff). Migration - if I want to go away from a VM on my dev system, to a new server, which maybe even runs Windows Server 2003, is it easy enough? Perhaps this is a particular point best suited for StackOverflow.

• C# lost local variable window from debug (f11 step by step)

  I was running my code (visual studio 2010) and I accidentally closed the window that shows the state of variables step by step. I think it was called locals but I can't find it on any of the menu option. Would appreciate any help on this, I didn't realize how handy it was until now - The following link is what my local window looks like when selecting debug/start debugging/selecting breakpoints, which I'm don't find helpful. • Different font SIZES in a Text Editor, based on Script(Alphabet) type (ie. per Unicode Code-Block)

  Some non-Latin-based scripts(alphabets) have more detail in their glyphs than do the Latin-based-script equivalents, and typically need a larger font to give the same degree of legibility (resolution-wise). Sometimes, both script types need to be present in the same file. Notepad++ allows different font SIZES (and colour, etc) courtesy of syntax-highlighting. This allows me to display larger-fonted non-Latin-based script in a // BIG-FONT comment. Although this has been quite handy for me in some situations, it is quite limited. A Word Processor can handle this scenario, but I'm not interested in that. I want a nice simple(?) plain(?) Text Editor to do it... on a per script-type basis... eg. mixing Latin-1 and Devanagari (and Mandarin, and ... Such a thing may not exits, but Notepad++ has shown that a simple(?) plain(?) Text Editor is capable of it. Does anyone know of such a Text Editor? ...Q. Why not a Word Processor? ...A. Because GCC and Python don't like that format! but UTF-8 is fine.

• Which scripting language to use to asynchronously ssh into equipment, run several commands, parse the output, and save to a file on my computer?

  There are several points I'd like to stress in my question. I'd like to login by asynchronously ssh'ing into our infrastructure equipment. Meaning, I do not want to connect to only one device, do all the tasks I need, disconnect, then connect to the next device. I want to connect to several devices at once in order to make the process as fast as possible. By equipment I mean 'infrastructure equipment' and not servers. I say this because I will not have the luxury of saving files to the device then transferring them to myself with scp or another method. The output of the scripts that are run will have to be saved directly to my computer. The output of the commands that are run will need to be cleaned up and parsed. Also I want the outputs of each device to be combined into one nice and neat file, not a separate file for each device. This will all be done from a linux box, using ssh, into devices that all use linux'ish proprietary OSes. My guess is the answer to my question will either be a Bash, Perl, or Python script but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask and to hear the reasons why one way is better than another. Thanks everyone. • Automating Access 2007 Queries (changing one criteria)

  So, I have 6 queries and I want to run them all once at the end of each month. (I know a bit about SQL but they're simply built using Access's design view). So, in the next few days, perhaps I'll run the 6 queries for May, as May just ended. I only want the data from the month that just ended, so the query has Criteria set as the name of the month (e.g., May). Now, it's not hugely time consuming to change all of these each month, but is there some way to automate this? Currently, they're all set to April and I want to change them all to May when I run them in a few days. And each month, I'd like to type the month (perhaps in a textbox in a form or somewhere else if you know a better way) just once and have it change all 6 queries, without having to manually open all 6, scroll over to the right field and change the Criteria. Note (about VBA): I have used Excel VBA so I know the basics of VBA but I don't really know anything specific to Access (other than seeing code a few times). And, others will use this who do not know anything about Access VBA. So, I think I have found a similar question/answer that could do this in VBA, but I'd rather do it some other way. If the query needs to be slightly redesigned later, probably by someone who doesn't know Access VBA at all, it'd be nice to have a solution not involving VBA if that is even possible.

• NGINX + PHP-FPM - Strange issue when trying to display images via php-gd / readfile - Connection wont terminate

  Ok, to get the details out of the way: The php script can be anything as simple as: <? header('Content-Type: image/jpeg'); readfile('/local/image.jpg'); ?> When I try to execute this via nginx + php-fpm what happens is the image shows up in the browser, here is what happens: IE - The page stays blank for a long period of time, and eventually the image is shown. Chrome - The image shows, but the loading spinner spins and spins for a long period of time. Eventually the debugger will show the image in red as in error, but the image shows up fine. Everything else on the server works great. Its pushing out about 100mbit steady serving static content. So this is definatly a php-fpm related issue. I THINK this may have something to do with the chunked encoding being sent back wrong? Also, I threw in a pause before the image was read, and got the pid of the fpm process, and it looks as tho its terminatly correctly (from strace): shutdown(3, 1 /* send */) = 0 recvfrom(3, "\1\5\0\1\0\0\0\0", 8, 0, NULL, NULL) = 8 recvfrom(3, "", 8, 0, NULL, NULL) = 0 close(3) = 0 The above was dumped long before ie/chrome decided to give up (even tho the image was shown) loading the image. Displaying HTML / text content is fine. Big bodies etc all load nice and fast and terminate right away (as they should). Doing something like: THIS IS THE IMAGE ---BINARY DUMP OF IMAGE--- Works fine too. Any ideas?

• Jabber client for windows 7

  I am looking for a jabber client with some specific functions. I have spent 1½ day looking for one and it is getting tiresome. Clients that I have been using, that have what I need, but I am not interesting for a reason in are: Pidgin, does not show complete messages in their popups. Miranda IM, I have a constant disconnect issue that does not seem to be resolved in my case. What I need are: Popups A popup that shows broadcasts to users. A popup that show when my username is typed in a conference chat. I need to be able to view the full message in the popup. No configuration of a theme to make this enabled, or if there is a working theme for it already. Preferable placement is on the top right of the screen. Able to 'popup' when running full screen applications, much like games. Conferences Easy access to bookmarked conferences. I do not want to go through submenus to rejoin a disconnected or closed conference. If I close the conference window I want to be connected to the conference until I exit the client. Tabbed interface. Configuration Sober configurations, options are great but there is a limit and the above needs to be availble in the options in a understandable manner. What I wish for: MSN Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Facebook Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Conferences/chats Not needed! Eyecandy is always nice.

  Is it possible to configure IIS 7 so that a single site with multiple bindings (or wildcard bindings) will launch a unique instance for each unique host name? To explain why this is desirable, we have an application that retrieves its configuration from a remote system. The behaviour of the application is governed by this configuration and not by the 'web.config'. The application uses its host name as a key to retrieve the configuration. Currently it is a manual process to create an identical IIS site for each instance of the application, differing only by the bindings. My thought, if it were possible, is that it would be nice to have one IIS site that effectively works as a template for an arbitrary number of dynamic sites. Whenever it is accessed by a unique host name a new instance of the site would be launched, and all further requests to that host name would go to that instance just as though I had created the site by hand. I use IIS regularly, but only for fairly straightforward site hosting. I'd like to know if this could be configured with vanilla IIS 7, but would also welcome answers that require a plugin or 3rd party product. Programming/architectural suggestions about changes to the app wouldn't really be appropriate for serverfault.

• Could I have destroyed Partitioning-Scheme/Filesystem of HDDs with External Harddrive Case with builtin Raid-Controller?

  I had just recently bought a Fantec QB-35US3R to have a nice box on my desk to make some backups to. Along with the HDD-Bay I had ordered some 4TB HDDs to let them run in Raid 5, which is handled by the hardware RAID controller of the Fantec HDD-Bay. The QB-35US3R arrived a few days before the hard drives, so I got impatient and had the idea to put three old 1TB disks in the Fantec device, just to test it... Long story short: I made a backup of the most important data on these three disks before they broke. I had set the configuration scheme to RAID 3 at the Fantec device. It seems, that the Fantec RAID controller has "somehow" destroyed the partitioning scheme or the file system, because when put into a HDD docking station, they get recognized by the OS (Ubuntu/Linux) but are not mountable anymore. I tried to recover the data from one HDD via gParted (parted), which ran some hours without success. Here I stopped, before trying other tools, cos I read that the longer a hard drive is running after a the partitioning got destroyed, the worse it gets. What could the HDD-Bay probably have done to my lovely hard drive disks? Is there some routine a RAID controller is executing, when it wants to create a RAID system? Like erasing the partition table (seems not plausible to me.) or writing some information to every hard drive in the RAID (seems more likely to me.)? Is there a chance to recover the data from these HDDs, or is the change a RAID controller makes so significant, that no software is of help?

• Windows 7 clean install becomes corrupt after reboot (repeated many fresh installs)

  My laptop keeps crashing on boot after clean Windows 7 install. Ok, here is the story, and some fact. Computer: Samsung NP900X3C-A04HK (256GB SSD, 8GB RAM) OS to install: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (not from Samsung, own fresh Win) I purchased this laptop about a year ago, never booted it into the Windows Home that was installed on it, installed directly Ubuntu on the machine. Full disc encryption was the selected install, so of course it wiped the complete disc (including Samsung Recovery Partition). After some time, I felt like going back to Windows, as Windows 7 is actually quite nice. So I went to buy a fresh Windows 7Ultimate with SP1. Now to the tricky part. Windows installs perfectly, and after installing all Windows updates, drivers from Samsung, software I need, it is time for shutting it down and go to bed. Starting it up again, and it is not booting, these are the type of errors I have gotten so far (fresh installed it more then a dozen times now, and tried different suggestions from threads on the net). Windows failed to start... Status: 0xc000000f Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. File: /boot/bcd Status: 0xc000000f Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data. And some other errors, not all the same. Not memory of this. I have run different disc checks, and all says my SSD is in perfect shape. Note: Soft reboots from Windows menu works, never gets corrupted. But if I Shutdown and then start it up again, this is when it happens. Can someone help me not get back to Ubunut? What can be the cause, and how can it be fixed so I do not get there problems again?

• why does my dl380 G3 crank the fan up so high (and how do i stop it?)

  I've got a HP DL380 and after I leave it on for a while it decides it needs to run the fans at a much higher speed than it did before. It's really loud and annoying. Is there any way to manually control the fan speed? Or otherwise get it to stop doing that? Thanks. edit: I guess i should have made it clear that this is a bit of a jury-rigged situation. I know the ideal solution is to put the thing in a server room with nice cool air. Unfortunately, that isn't happening. This is the sort of problem that calls for a jury rigged solution like manually setting the fan speed and accepting the fact that it's going to run hot shutting down a CPU (can i do that?) spinning down the disks when they're not in use (is that possible?) solution: Install HP's system health monitoring daemon, hpasmd. I installed it to try to figure out what was going on, and just running it fixed the problem.
