• Network based on Netgear FVS318 extremely slow

  A network I maintain uses an FVS318 as a router, with a separate switch. Communication within the network is slow. Out to the internet is even slower. As it stands there is one patch from the FVS to the switch and no other devices directly connected to the FVS because any that are run so slowly they might as well not be connected to the network. Swapping in a bog-standard home router dramatically increases network speed, but that's not a viable solution because some of the enterprise features of the FVS are required. There are quite a few complaints about this on the Netgear forum, but Netgear support have not been forthcoming with any help - so I turn to you all: any ideas?

• Ownership/permissions of uploaded files

  Hello. I want to find out if I am on the right track. My script uploads files to the directory "images". The directory has this setup: owner/group = www-data Permissions = 700 Questions: Is this a good way to secure the directory from a hacker uploading files? Will the hacker be able to upload the files directly to the directory? Note: I have a bunch of other security measures in my upload script + an .htaccess script in the directory that disables script Execution. • 2D animations for Android, IOS, web

  Working on Windows 7 platform, I'm interested in creating an app that could run on Android devices (phone or tablet), IOS devices (iPhone, iPad), and the web. First target would be Android. Do you remember those old Arthur Murray footstep diagrams to teach dancing? I want to do the same thing, but animate the steps, so the user can play them all, as well as step forward or backward thru them at their own pace. Perhaps one could generate an animated GIF and then play it on the platform. So there would seem to be two parts to this: 1) A good way to generate the animation images. I can, for example, see using SketchUp - something I know - for this. But is there something better it would be worth investing in? And, 2) How to play the result, including options for playback speed control, and even forward/backward stepping? Ideally a single, or easily adaptable player to the three different OS platforms.

• Internet connection too slow

  I now think that it is the ISP. After a full scan of my system. With super antispyware, avast, norton and spybot. Internet connection is still slow. And the truth is we have recently upgraded the connection from 512 kbps to 768. And I get a .25 Mbps at speedtest.net which is equivalent to 256 Kbps. Its not even half of the advertised speed. Is it normal for ISP's to just limit your bandwidth if you are always downloading something from the internet? Are they entitled to do this.

• Rate of UDP packet loss over WLAN

  While testing something with TFTP I noticed lots of timeouts (and slow speed as result) when I used my WLAN - and no problems when using a network cable. A quick test program sending/receiving UDP revealed that there are about 3-5% packets lost. While it's obvious that WLAN has to be less reliable than LAN, I have no knowledge what loss rates are considered 'normal' - and when there is a need to further investigate the network infrastructure. Are there 'typical' packet loss rates on WLAN (and other network technologies e.g. PowerLAN, WAN, ...? Thanks

• Web server suddenly stopped working

  I have a web server, which was working fine. It also was an FTP server and a Windows Remote Desktop server, all working fine. Someone called our ISP to increase the internet speed, and suddenly nothing works - I can connect with Teamviewer, but HTTP, FTP & RD doesn't work. Disabled firewall. Ran Wireshark - the packets don't come through at all. Set the webserver to port 20111, in case the ISP is blocking port 80, and again, the packets didn't come through at all. (localhost:20111 works fine) Port forwarding is set up for ports 80, 21, 3389 & 20111 to 10.0.0.32 (which is the correct address - checked with ipconfig). Restarted router and computer. I would be very grateful for any help.

• Linux: Limiting data throughput (pipe) in bytes per second?

  Hi all, I was wandering if there is a Linux program that can limit data throughput of a pipe - in actual bytes per second?. From what I gather, applicable for the purposes would be bfr, however, it has been removed from Debian (Removal candidate: bfr) cpipe, however, it seems the lowest resolution it will support is kB/s, meaning that buffer writes can still reach MB/s ([SOLVED] Is there a program to limit terminal pipe speed? - Page 2 - Ubuntu Forums) What I'd want is to be able to specify something like cat example.txt | ratelimit -Bps 100 > /dev/ttyUSB0 ... and actually have a single byte from example.txt sent each 1/100 = 0.01 sec (or 10 ms) to 'output'.. • Super slow time machine backup on my mac

  I just got a new 2TB drive which I'm trying to use as a time machine drive for my mac which has a 1TB drive. On my first time trying to back it up, I'm getting terrible throughput, not even 1GB per day (it's been running for 36 hours now). I erased the disk and tried to copy a large file to it and got the same slow speed. What can I do to diagnose this? Are there any tools which can inspect the disk and tell me if it's messed up? • VMware - Broadcom 1000Gbps NIC does not link at 100Mbps to a Cisco switch port

  Today we've stumbled on a very awkward situation with our VMWare Server. The server is with ESX 3.5 that has a 1Gbps NIC. We bought a brand new managed Cisco Linksys switch with 10/100Mbps interface ports but when we plugged the cable in one of the ports the link simply does not wanted to activate :S... Does anyone with more VMware experience have ever had similar problem? From what I know is that 1Gbps NICs are backwards compatible with 100Mbps switches. I am starting to go nuts :@

• How do I usb tether my Cyanogen modded G1's internet connection to my Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Xubuntu?

  I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83 I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

• Why is Chrome receiving data?

  Chrome seems to be continually receiving data even though I'm not downloading anything. This is making a noticeable impact on my browsing speed. The first screenshot shows Chrome receiving data even though I'm not downloading anything (nor buffering a YouTube video etc.) Even after I completely close Google Chrome, the "chrome.exe" remains in the Resource Monitor list and the "Received bytes" column continually increases in the screenshot below. However, "chrome.exe" does not show up in the Processes tab of Task Manager. This only occurs sometimes, but I don't know why. I have tried running a malware/virus scans to ensure that there is nothing malicious behind this, but those scans have shown nothing. Any ideas on what's causing this?

The only frustration is that the W search (whereis) isn't as powerful (and probably not meant to be). What would be the best solution to search all inbox messages e.g. with a specific from (and having alpine to show a list of these matching messages) or even in the entire collection of IMAP folders or in a specific IMAP folder (e.g. archive) ? How would someone go about doing this on IIS7.5 for a ASP.NET MVC site? The plan so far: Register domain eg static.com, create a new website in IIS Manually copy the js / css / images folders from MVC as is so that they have the same paths on the new server Enable IIS gzip settings (js/css = high compression, images = none) Set caching with far future expiry dates <clientCache cacheControlCustom="public" /> in the web.config Never set any cookies on the static.com site Combine and minimize js / css Auto deploy changes in static content with WebDeploy Is this plan correct? And how can you use WebDeploy to deploy the whole web app to one server and then only the static items to another? • Permission denied when trying to execute a binary burned to a CD-R

  On an Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) machine, I burned a CD from the command prompt using: cdrecord -v speed=16 dev=0,1,0 /FPS.iso The CD now contains an executable and some files. I tested the CD by loading it onto another machine (Red Hat 5.3) and when I try to run the program I get the following message: bash: ./FPS1_1: Permission denied I can open other files like text documents (the executable also comes with shared libraries). I realized I had burned the CD as root so I burned another one as another user but I still have the same problem. How can I remove this permission or what is the problem? P.S. the image was in / if that helps

• Should all my files be stored on my shared partition?

  I am setting up a tripple boot HD and was going to use a 4th partition to share files between OS's. I was wondering if there is any point in having much space on each OS partition to store files or if I just make the shared partition big and put everything on that? Is there any difference in speed between accessing files on the shared partition vs the native files? Are there any other benefits/disadvantages of having files on either the native/shared partition? EDIT: OS's in question are Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04, and OS X 10.7.4.

• MySQL gzipped Export in PhpMyAdmin has wrong size in Mozilla

  That is really strange. I am using PhpMyAdmin 2.11.9.6 on Linux hosting. While I am Exporting databases using "gzipped" compression in Mozilla, I am getting files which have size of uncompressed database, but they seems to be downloading in incredible speed (10 times quicker than is possible using my ISP). So at the end: for database of 10M size I am getting 10M gzip downloaded in miniseconds it has indeed shown 10M size on drive it is corrupted Zip compression is working just fine (I am getting file with cca 1M size with fine content of compressed database) And the weirdest thing: that is happening for Mozilla Firefox (13.0.1) only, Internet Explorer 9 is downloading correct gzipped files... Any hint?

• RAID 1 after install and two controlers

  I have question regarding RAID 1. Can I setup software RAID 1 after having installed the first drive and setup ubuntu 12? I know that during server install and partitioning I can select RAID and setup then, but what I am not clear on is how in the world to setup RAID 1 after the fact? Can someone provide directions for this? Also, can I RAID 1 two drives one being 500GB and the mirror drive being 1TB? Of course the mirror drive would have a 500GB partition but that's my point. Lastly, can one drive be on IDE and the other on a SATA controller? I know speed will be an issue, that doesn't matter, I just need to know if it will work without corrupting data and if it's the same process? Thanks.

The good thing was I could select which content to play; using the click-to-play feature in Firefox and Chrome. But now that HTML5 video is getting popular, I see a lot of ads popping into view again. They are not only a distraction, they hog resources on my computer and make the fans spin full speed. Is there a way to disable HTML5 audio/video content by default, and enable it only selectively?

  Hi Given a PC with several hard drives: Is it possible to use one fast disk as a giant file cache? I.e. automatically copying frequently accessed data to that one disk, and transparently redirecting reads and writes to that disk, so that other drives would only have be accessed occassionally. (writes would have to be forwarded to the other disks after a while of course) Advantages: the other drives could be powered down most of the time; reducing power, heat, noise speed of the other drives would not matter much. cache disk could be solid state. How can I set such a system up? What OS supports these options? Is this possible at all using Windows or Linux?

• Can I use dis-similar HW for Win2008r2 DFS-R

  The setup: Windows 2008R2 Ent on two machines. The roles on each server will include File Servers and DC's. The machines come from two different vendors (Dell/HP) The Dell is an Athlon and the HP is an Intel. Both have roughly the same speed CPU and 8GB of RAM. They have different Raid controllers, and more or less the same amount of disk space (roughly 6TB.) Can the servers use different types of hardware? Is there any documentation about this? The last question I have is about the network. Can DFS-R be forced to use a differen subnet from the regular network?

• Query Performance Degrades with High Number of Logical Reads

  I'm using Confio Ignite8 to derive this information, and monitor waits. I have one query that runs frequently, and I notice that on some days there is an extremely high number of logical reads incurred, +300,000,000 for 91,000 executions. On a good day, the logical reads are much lower, 18,000,000 for 94,000 executions. The execution plan for the query utilizes clustered index seeks, and is below. • Wireless slow, but very odd

  I have a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop, internet through the wireless timeouts. Even though it connects fine to the AP/router. The computer had a virus (searchnu?) and I backed up the usual and restored the laptop to factory image. Problem is after the restore the internet through the wireless the same still... and connected via wired and everything worked fine. I was able to update the whole system. Internet worked perfect, speed great. But the wireless still was pitiful. Ping tests with wireless are interesting: Google= 18ms Gmail= 18ms Yahoo= 1023ms 8.8.8.8=30ms Microsoft= Request Timed Out Bing= Request Timed Out msn= Request Timed Out even though I get 18ms with google, the pages take a long time to load. Is this a root kit? is it the wireless card in the laptop?

• ActionScript MovieClip moves to the left, but not the right

Currently I have a code that is suppose to move the player left and right, and when the left or right key is released, the "mc" slides a little bit. The problem I'm having is that making the "mc" move to the left works, but the exact some code used for the right doesn't.
