• Adding an integer onto an array

  I'm trying to add random numbers onto the end of this array when ever I call this function. I've narrowed it down to just this so far. when ever I check to see if anything is in the array it says 0. So now i'm quite stumped. I'm thinking that MutableArray releases the contents of it before I ever get to use them. problem is I don't know what to use. A button calls the function and pretty much everything else is taken care of its just this portion inside the function. • How to optimize indexing of large number of DB records using Zend_Lucene and Zend_Paginator

  So I have this cron script that is deployed and ran using Cron on a host and indexes all the records in a database table - the index is later used both for the front end of the site and the backed operations as well. After the operation, the index is about 3-4 MB. The problem is it takes a lot of resources (CPU: 30+ and a good chunk of memory) and slows the machine down. My question is about how to optimize the operation described below: First there is a select query built using the Zend Framework API, this query is then passed to a Paginator factory that returns a paginator which I am using to balance the current number of items being indexed and not iterate over too much items. The script is iterating over the current items in the paginator object using a foreach loop until reaching the end and then it starts from the beginning after getting items for the next page. I am suspecting this overhead is caused by the Zend_Lucene but no idea how this could be improved.

  Occasionally I read news articles that mention about some computer models that computer scientists use to predict winners of some sporting events or the odds for betting which I think there must be a mathematical model behind it. I never bothered to think twice even though I am a "pseudo computer scientist" myself. With the 2010 FIFA World Cup just underway, and since I am also a "pseudo football/soccer player" myself, I just started to wonder about these calculations algorithms. For example, I know one factor is determining the strength of opponents, so that a win against a strong opponent can count more than a win against a weak opponent. But it now kind of gets in a circular loop, or at least how does one determine the strength of a team in the first place, before that team can be considered strong or weak? If it's based on a historical data then there's no way that could be accurate, because those players of the past are no longer on the fields so their impact is none (except maybe if they become coaches like Maradona) Anyway, long question short, if you're happen to be working in this field or have some knowledge, please shed some lights.

• Teacher confused about MVC?

  I have an assignment to create a game in java using MVC as a pattern. The thing is that stuff I read about MVC aren't really what the teacher is telling me. What I read is that the Model are the information objects, they are manipulated by the controllers. So in a game the controller mutates the placement of the objects and check if there is any collision etc. What my teacher told me is that I should put everything that is universal to the platform in the models and the controllers should only tell the model which input is given. That means the game loop will be in a model class, but also collision checks etc. So what I get from his story is that the View is the screen, the Controller is the unput handeler, and the Model is the rest. Can someone point me in the right direction?

• .htaccess wildcard problem

  I've come across a problem with an .htaccess rule I can't sort out. It works on my MAMP stack and it works on 3 other servers, but it won't work on a particular server and keeps giving me a "500 error with an additional 302 error". It's the wildcard that's throwing it and from Google research it says it may be because of an infinite loop, but it works on other servers just fine.   Say i have an single dimension array (to keep it simple). Is there a simple way to tell how many entries are populated, or the highest dimension of populated entries, other than to loop through and count them? I know Ubound finds the highest dimension of the array but that's not what I need. Is there something like Ubound but it only find populated entries, or the highest dimension populated? Also, what if the array is multidimensional. I'm working in excel vba.

  I have a big database-like sheet, first row contains headers. I would like a subset of rows of this table based on column values. Two issues: 1) VBA-wise I would like to loop through the columns, when the values for all necessary columns all match, copy the entire row into a new sheet. 2) The subset of rows is based on a list. This should be the first column to be looped through. For example I want all rows where the value in column A is equal to one of the values in my list. Is there any possibility to autofilter strings based on a list (column) of strings? EDIT Thanks to @Doug Glancy the autofiltering works now, so I've removed my (horrible) code and issue 1 is solved.

  Hy, I was thinking that all my website will have use of cells, using the known plugin cell for rails, so this is my idea: A table that contains 3 fields: id, view_name and layout. the layout will be a serialized hash. When a request is made, the layout field is requested and then in the view, default layout, will be unserialized the layout var, that looks like this: @layout[:sidecol][:gallery] = {... some params for it...}; @layout[:maincol][:comments] = {..params...}; In the <% #ruby code to render the cells in the @layout[:sidecol] % will be some ruby code that will loop over the @layout[:sidecol] and render all cells in it. the same occurs in the maincol div. What do you think? Positive in my opinion: More modular controller is used only for post easy change of structure easier to implement some kind of traking to see diferences on what layout is better or not.   I have task to prepare two windows with swing. One contains grid of squares, with random numbers in them. In second I need to load pieces of tiled image and then show them in the correct order, forming tiled image. I've used swing only few times to draw some 2d polylines, so basically I just theoretically now what to do. Ok, so window number 1: I start with creating Jframe for the window. Then I do for loop and in it create 16 JLabels with random numbers in them ? How to set margins between each tile and the whole window ? Window number 2 : So I start the same, but instead of loading numbers I add images ? Now, how can I load image from file and then set it as background ?

• How do you get the ID of a control in ASP.NET

  I am attempting to loop through an array of numbers, match them to the checkbox they they are associated with, and checkmark that box. My checkbox is set up like: <input type="checkbox" runat="server" id="someID" name="somename" value="1234" /> My code when the page loads currently looks like: foreach (string interest in interests_Var){ foreach (var c in Page.Controls) { } } interests_Var is my array containing different numbers. We'll assume one of them is 1234. While looping through the page controls, I want to compare the value of the control to my number. If it equals my number, I want to then apply the attribute checked="checked". I'm assuming I have to find the ID of the control I am using, then use that ID to add a new attribute. Or is there a way I can add the attribute using the c variable? I'm not dead set on this setup, so if you know a better way, I'm all ears. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

• Why am I getting a TypeError when looping?

  I'm working on a Python extension module, and one of my little test scripts is doing something strange, viz.: x_max, y_max, z_max = m.size for x in xrange(x_max): for y in xrange(y_max): for z in xrange(z_max): #do my stuff What makes no sense is that the loop gets to the end of the first 'z' iteration, then throws a TypeError, stating that "an integer is required". If I put a try...except TypeError around it and check the types of x, y, and z, they all come back as < type 'int' . Am I missing something here?

  I have data this is linked from SQL Server into an excel document. The column format on the SQL Server is datetime2. When I get the data via an ODBC connection it comes across as a string? I tried using CAST(column AS DATE ) but that didn't work. I tried reformatting via CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), column, 103) as well but that didn't work. I tried retrieving the data via Microsoft query as well but that didn't work. At the moment I am using VBA code like: While (ActiveCell.Value <> "") ActiveCell.Value = DATEVALUE(ActiveCell.Value) ActiveCell.Offset(1,0).Activate Wend and looping through each column that needs this treatment but 100000 rows in multiple columns takes forever to loop through. Are there any alternatives?

How is that ambiguous? The second function is clearly the preferred match since it's more specialized. Especially since the T1&& won't bind to an lvalue unless I explicitly forward/move it. Sorry - i is an int. Otherwise, the question would make no sense, and I thought people would infer it since it's normally the loop iterator.

• Storing an arbitrary R object onto HDD?

  I understand that we can export data matrices to csv or xlsx files. What about complex objects like lm? For example, in my work I might have a list of length 1000, each with a single lm() object. Each time I load R I have to wait a long time to populate the 1000 length list with these lm objects with a for loop or a lapply. I would rather just save the list somewhere on my HDD at the end of a session and open it at the start of the next session.
