• How to handle multiple pages of the same site with the same outlinks

  I am developing a back link tool for Chinese SEO (our web site URL is: http://link.aizhan.com just like ahrefs.com. I encountered a problem which is how to handle multiple pages of the same site with the same out links. For example: Most pages of bbs.chinaz.com have the same out links such as: bbs.chinaz.com/Tea/thread-6293993-1-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/Tea/list-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/alimama/thread-6265032-1-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/alimama/thread-6265032-2-1.html?userid=-1&extParms= bbs.chinaz.com/Shuiba/list-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/FeedBack/thread-4456753-1-1.html etc.. All of the pages have the same out links in the top of the page: www.cnzz.com(anchor text:????) www.313.com(????) www.idc123.com(????) Suppose I store these outlinks into database. The SEO will find there are six backlinks from bbs.chinaz.com of www.cnzz.com. This is obviously no sense for the SEO. Can you tell me how do you deal with this problem?

• Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site? [migrated]

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

• Should I use subdomains or subfolders for my user groups?

  Hello, I run a photography website where each user has its own subdomain (i.e. user.site.com). I'm thinking of adding user groups but I'm unable to decide if I should also associate a separate subdomain or simply a subfolder for each group: Subfolders (www.site.com/groups/my-group) Pros: Easier to maintain from a tehnical p.o.v. Cons: Harder to memorize. The URLs can get really long (www.site.com/groups/my-group/albums/my-album/) Subdomains (my-group.site.com) Pros: Easier to memorize. Shorter URLs. One might have the impression that such an URL is somewhat more "independent" from the main site. Cons: Group and user names belong to the same name space, so we need to check for collisions when creating a new user/group. One cannot determine the content of the page by only reading the URL: Is x.site.com a user page or a group page? What's your opinion on the matter? I should note that DeviantArt.com uses the 2nd option (that's where I got the idea). Thank you in advance!

  I have used http://www.longtailvideo.com/bits-on-the-run,http://www.influxis.com/, wistia for video hosting. Wistia didn't allow the finer control that we wanted to have. Influxis doesn't have the features that Bits on the Run has but platform usage for BOTR gets expensive. I was thinking of moving the videos to Amazon CDN. What are your thoughts and experiences with video hosting and are there any recommendations? Videos will be privately streamed to 100's of doctors offices.

  I am working on a site that takes a governmental data base, provides a number of statistical and other summaries and also post the original data. However this data (mostly long pieces of text) is also published on the official governmental site (without the added value of summaries). Should I worry about google ranking due to this duplication? What is the preferred way to point to the official source of the information? There is no advertisement on my site. My site is ".com". The governmental site is ".bg".

• reasonably priced registrar for obscure tlds like .tt

  I'm looking to buy a .tt domain name, however the only registrars I can find want from between $500 to $3000 for one domain. Considering I can buy a .com for around $10 a year, I consider that not very reasonable! It's going to be for a personal blog site (non monetised), hence why I'm not willing to spend over $500 a year on it. Does anyone know of any registrars that sell obscure tld's such as .tt for reasonable price? As for my definition of "reasonable", I understand it's not a .com and I'm going to have to pay more, but $3000 is just silly! In my opinion I'd say anything under $100 is reasonable.

• How do I install PHP 5.4.8 on a Win XP workstation?

  I am trying to create a MediaWiki site on my WinXP workstation, and need to install PHP 5.4.8. I have downloaded and unpacked the binaries for PHP, but the install instructions are telling me to "Run the MSI installer and follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard." Unfortunately there is no MSI file provided in the package! Am I missing something? Besides a clue, I mean. Edited to add: I will try to make this clear. I am not going to be able to work with Apache.

  I am hosting collection of videos, for which I retain the copyright, on a file server that I'd like to share with family and friends. When a user visits the my fileserver via a web browser they are asked to authenticate using HTTP auth and then they are presented with a basic list of the files. I'd like to build web application that provides a clean interface with simply library functionality. However, this app will be hosted on a different server. I'm trying to figure out a security model for my file server that doesn't require the user to login to both the file-server and the hosting-server. I want to make this as easy as possible for my non-tech savy family while still maintaining security for my files.

Should I link billing to my own credit card and then have the client pay me (they have to pay me to manage the account anyway), or should I have the client pay Google directly? • Google is still crawling and indexing my old, dummy, test pages which now are 404 not found

  I have set up my site with sample pages and data (lorem ipsum, etc..) and Google has crawled these pages. I deleted all these pages and actually added real content but in webmaster tools, i still get a lot of 404 errors Google trying to crawl these pages. I have set them to "mark as resolved" but some pages still come back as 404. Furthermore, I have a lot of these sample pages still listed when i do a search of my site on Google. How to remove them. I think these irrelevant pages are hurting my rating. I actually wanted to erase all these pages and start getting my site being being indexed as a new one but I read it's not possible? (I have submitted a sitemap and used "Fetch as Google.")

I've recently put a fairly complex "filter" into place which searches my content for mentions of fish species profiles and turns them into an active link. As such, I'm using /?p=1703 or whatever the ID is. What I'd like to know is: how much will this affect my SEO rating/ranking? Will it be detrimental if I don't rewrite the function? • Strategy for image sizes

  I run a site that has a lot of writers that generate quite a few articles a day. I require them to provide two image sizes (one for the big headline image and one as the thumbnail). I've been wanting to change up the site layout a bit, but I am becoming limited by the image sizes for the posts. I have considered just cropping images, but they still need to look nice, and cropping doesn't always generate what I'd want. I'd prefer to just scale down by percentage (as I do with thumbnails). Should I just make the writers provide more images? How do other sites handle this?

Press the button in firefox and I got connection reset thingy. I wonder why. It happens since yesterday. I have emigrated all domains that requires post requests somewhere else.   I saw the various questions on SO about this. I'm not sure they answered me. I'm in the USA. Someone asked me about hosting on a company in South Africa. They are not a big company. This person simply liked the company for whatever reason. I only saw one horror story. Not many reviews really. It is a small outfit from what I can tell. But, the fact of it being in South Africa, does that matter? Do people ever pursue legal action against hosting companies anyway? The users will all be in the States. edit: I'm not sure why this is unclear.

• 'Buy the app' landing page implementations

  My site (using Django) has an app that I'm trying to push - I currently have a piece of middleware that redirects the user to a page advertising the app if they're accessing the page on the iPhone, then setting a cookie so that the user isn't bugged by the message every time they visit the site. This works fine, however checking the page with the mobile Googlebot checker shows that the Googlebot gets stuck in the redirect (since it doesn't store cookies) and therefore won't index the proper content. So, I'm trying to think of an alternative implementation that won't hurt the site's Google ranking and won't have any other adverse effects. I've considered a couple of options: Redirect (the current solution), but don't redirect if the user agent matches the Googlebot's UA string. This would be ideal, however I'm not sure if Google like their bot being treated differently from other users, and I'm afraid the site's ranking may be somehow penalised if I go ahead with this. Use a Javascript popup instead of a redirect. This would make sure the Googlebot finds the content it needs, however I envision this approach causing compatibility issues with the myriad mobile devices/browsers out there, and may affect the page load time. How valid are these options? And is there a better option for implementing this feature out there? I've tried researching this topic but surprisingly can't find any reputable-looking blog posts that explore this topic. EDIT: I posted this on SF because it seemed unsuitable for SO, but if there's another site that would be better for this issue then I'd be happy to move the question elsewhere.

• Good podcasting solution?

  I simply ask for the best, most common and simple way to set up a podcast? Please, I need an answer so I can close this question? I run a joomla-based website for a small church and now need a simple, cheap and effective solution for an audio podcast. I am looking for a solution that will do the following: User uploads audio files to service (preferably not to our own site) that is cheap, fast and simple to use. Dropbox for example? Files are easily embeddable into Joomla website articles to be played on the spot (through simple-to-use and media player). Preferably through RSS feeds (to make it easy to update every week). Files are downloadable. Files are viewable on iPhones and other smartphones. Solution can be broadcasted via iTunes. Solution doesn't need a lot of extra, new third party software. I'd rather keep it simple and familiar than have it be a complete new system but with a steep learning curve. At the moment we use vimeo to host the podcast, through video files. But we'd like to move to something simpler that doesn't involve a series of difficult steps to upload the files to the web.

  I'm generating a like button with Facebook's 'standard' layout for my site via https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ . I've set its width to 200 pixels, but notice that setting it to lower than 225 pixels has no effect, and the documentation on that page indeed specifies 225px as the minimum width for the standard layout. Unfortunately I need to make it 200 pixels wide to fit my site's design. Is there any way to force it into this width? (The site's at http://gwwc2.centreforeffectivealtruism.org/ if you want to have a play with Firebug, though the like button gets generated by javascript so you'd probably have to duplicate that page and edit its source.)

  In Photoshop, you can easily devide the image into zones using point and click and it automatically generates the corresponding html with image slices addressed in tables. Gimp also has a Slice (Filter Web Slice) but it is so rudimentary and, as far as I can see, does not allow point and click selection of slices. I am wondering if the functionality can be added into Gimp, or there are other Linux software to do this. I hate to return to Windows jut to do this simple task which I happen to use frequently.   Google Analytics makes it very easy to see the number of views of the most-viewed pages, but I cannot figure out how to see the number of views a particular page has received, or the number of views of recently added pages (e.g. blog posts).   It seems that more and more people are trying to 'cheat' their way into more Twitter followers. The basic mechanism is: Follow thousands of people on Twitter with the hope that they'll follow you back. Once it reaches a point you're happy with, start gradually unfollowing them. That way, at the end of the day, it'll look like a lot of people follow you unconditionally. I've seen self-proclaimed social media and SEO experts do this. It's clear they want to look influential — and will use black hat social media tactics to do so. I can see how it can work, so is Twitter letting them get away with it? Should it?
