• Nameserver Problem

  I recently bought a new VPS , and i was trying to set private nameservers in my domain cpanel. I went ahead and added 4 A records ns1.mydomain.com - points to my ip ns2.mydomain.com - points to my ip www.mydomain.com - points to my ip mydomain.com - points to my ip and changed the nameservers to ns1 & ns2.mydomain.com the problem is that now while typing www.ns1.mydomain.com and www.ns2.mydomain.com in browser it points to the correct IP address but the www.mydomain.com is saying an Error The webpage at http://demiracles.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. Error 137 (net::ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED): Unknown error. Error message in chrome is above. Please help me.

• Create subdomains via C-Panel or via domain registrar?

  I am a novice, so excuse me if it sounds dummy. I read a few similar questions on this topic here but they did not answer my question. I have a personal website, hosted with C-panel control panel. Via C-panel I can easily create new subdomains and I do not need to apply any DNS settings or so. And the subdomian is good to go immediately and are working fine. I have unlimited subdomains option. When I check my DNS management control panel in my domain registrar's site, there is no record associated with my subdomains. Now I want to buy a new domain name from 1and1, and have it as an add-on domain in my prevouse host. 1and1 say they only allow 5 subdomains. What does this mean? Can not I create unlimited subdomains under my new domain name, just as I do for my old domain? How does C-panel create and manage subdomains that there is nothing about it in my DNS control panel? • Web master tools is throwing out 404 errors on link not on page

  Webmaster tools is showing thousands of 404 errors, where pages on the site are referring to another incorrect url. For example, URL not found www.plantify.co.uk/shop/=, linked from http://www.plantify.co.uk/shop/gift-voucher and http://www.plantify.co.uk/shop/special-plant-offers. I obviously have checked the source and cannot find any references to this link on any page. The only consistent issue is that it only seems to report this error on pages with two section i.e. www.plantify.co.uk/shop does not report any error whilst all pages with www.plantify.co.uk/shop/xxx (where xxx can be several different pages such as gift-voucher) all report this. I cannot seem to duplicate this error. I have run a link checker (we use Screaming Frog) and it does not report this error. I have fetched these pages as a bot, and these do not report this error. I am at a total loss. I cannot even duplicate the issue, but it is most definitely an issue, as Webmaster Tools is reporting new errors every day. Is this perhaps google bot doing its own thing?

• Is it better to have multiple domains for cities or one single TLD?

  I make websites for small businesses, and for some reason business owners love to have several domains with the same website but the TLD containing the city name. For example: 1. smallbizname.com 2. clevelandsmallbizname.com 3. columbussmallbizname.com 4. cincinnatismallbizname.com ... and so on. I've seen questions about localization per country aspects, but this is a much smaller scale, so I don't think the same rules apply. The problem I have is the companies never want to write separate content per domain, just have the same website hosted several times at each domain. I feel this probably hurts SEO for two reasons: 1. Traffic gets scattered throughout domains, could be boosting just one domain. 2. Duplicate content penalty because the content is identical. My question boils down to this... Should I redirect all the city domains to the main business name domain, or does having these separate sites help to rank better per city? And if they are redirected, how does google rank the redirects? Thanks for any input on this issue!!

• WordPress mod_rewrite redirect specific folders

  As a new user, I'm not allowed to post more than two hyperlinks here. So I have added a space after every http (ignore them and read as full URLs). System: Debian Etch, Apache 2.2 I have a WordPress instance with multiple blogs. I would like to redirect some of the folders based on the year and month, while leaving other folders go to the actual locations. Example: I have archives for a few years, like 2010, 2011 and 2012: http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2010/02 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2011/01 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2012/01 I would like to redirect all 2010 and 2011 posts to another blog with the same folder structure: http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myotherblog/2010/02 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myotherblog/2011/01 and so on. I would like to have 2012 and beyond to go to the actual site (http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2012/01). I tried mod_rewrite with the following, one rule at a time to test redirection for just one year (and to expand later for other years), and none of them worked! * RewriteEngine is already on since there are some default WordPress rewrites. * RewriteBase is set to http://mydomain.com/wordpress/ . * I put my rule before all the other default WordPress rules are processed. Didn't work solution #1 RedirectMatch 301 /myblog/2010/(.*) /myotherblog/2010/$1 Didn't work solution #2 RewriteRule /myblog/2010/(.*) http ://mydomain.com/myotherblog/2010/$1 [R=301] Didn't work solution #3 RedirectPermanent /myblog/2010/(.*) http ://mydomain.com/myotherblog/2010/$1 I've also tried the above rules with and without a fully qualified URL for the new location. The rewrite log, with log level set to 9, did not provide any useful information. It shows that it looks at the pattern specified against the URL (as mentioned in the rule), but finally what happens is a passthrough to http ://mydomain.com/myblog/ for all URLs or a 500 Internal Server Error. Any ideas on where I could be going wrong or any alternative solutions?

  I'm just learning about public key cryptography and I want to make a public key certificate for my web server so that I can use https. My server is hosted on some random free webhost that is practically impossible for anything...and so my question is this: Is there any harm in making my private key, public key, and public key certificate on my computer using openssl and then transferring it to the server? • Redirect from domain to other one

  I deal with the following problem. I am customer of one domain reseller, which has fair prices, fine administration, and I have all my domains registered by it. Recently I've created a new webpage using a free web service (those sites where you can create a simple webpages with some template after few clicks). This new web page has default address in the following form: "pagename.provider.cz", but I want to use my own domain "pagename.cz". And that is the problem, because the provider would assign domain name to my presentation only if I registered mentioned domain by him. That wouldn't be a problem, but he is three times more expensive then my favorite one. So I am thinking about registering domain "pagename.cz" under my favorite registrator and then making 301 PHP redirect from it to "pagename.provider.cz". Shall this affect (negatively) my domain ranking? Are there any catches which I shoud care about?

• How do I use Instagram to post to my business page but not my personal page?

  I tried asking this question on the Facebook forums but got no answer, maybe someone here might be able to help me with this. I have a Facebook account and within that same account is my Facebook page for my business. Problem is every time that I try to use Instagram to upload a photo it gets uploaded to my personal/primary Facebook page and not the business page which is under the same email address and password. Instagram ask for this email address and password but how can I just have Instagram upload it to my business page and not my personal page? Or at very least how can I do both?

  I am working on a simple Wordpress blog where when an article is published, it appears on ALL these pages: Homepage - Headline(clickable) + 3-line summary Parent category page - Headline(clickable) + 3-line summary Child category page - Headline(clickable) + 3-line summary Author page - Headline(clickable) sitemap.xml I've been told that I should add all author pages to my robots.txt, under disallow, so as search engine bots do not spider /author/* since all links on these pages are available elsewhere. Is this a good approach or maybe rel=nofollow is better, or maybe I shouldn't worry about this at all?

  I just got an email, from a former user on my website He was complaining that Google still shows the contact page he created on my site, even though he deleted it a month ago This is the first time in many years anyone requests this I told him, that it's almost entirely up to Google what content it wants to keep/show and for how long. If it's deleted on the site, I can't do much, other than request a re-visit from the googlebot The user-page already now says something like "Not found. The user has removed the content" TL;DR: But the question is: Should I generally add a 404 header (or other) for dynamic user content that has been removed from the site? Or could this hurt the site (SEO)?

• How accurate is header information received?

  Please see What could keep a javascript from loading properly on a page? In the header it shows that it is coming from IIS 6.0. How accurate is this information? Also this vendor (which is the worst I have worked with) made us go through a huge server switch process. Did they "upgrade" to W2003 IIS6.0? What would be the reason for a "new" server to be running this old of a version of IIS? Am I missing something?

• Remember me or not?

  I was told to post this on webmasters instead of stackoverflow. Is it safe to have the remember me feature? Would it be somewhat safe (knowing it won't be 100% safe) to allow users to close their browser and come back still logged in? I am not exacting sure which way I should go after reading different things about safety. I learned about session fixation and implemented security to add more protection. From experience, if remember me is checked then only your username/email appears and requires you to re-enter your password. Other sites allow you to come in and out as much as you way without logging out after the browser has closed. • Webmatrix fails to connect PHP website to MySQL

  I downloaded the latest versions of Webmatrix and MySQL. I downloaded a PHP-MySQL Connector: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/php-mysqlnd/ In the "Databases" Workspace I pressed "New Connection" button and choose "MySQL Connection" In the Dialog box I filled-in all connection details -- It looks like the database was added. But then when I double-click on the database, I get a short error message saying it cannot connect. I tried everything, searched the web... I'm sure it's a very simple question, so please whoever can help I'll be grateful. I think best solution for me would be if someone could please just give me a link to download of: Webmatrix,MySQL,Connector; and instructions on how to install and then how to connect. This would be the safest way to help me.

  I am a web developer that is starting to look into hosting his own website. I would like to showcase my programming skills (PHP, MySQl, C#, Wordpress). My knowledge of languages I am OK with but the actually hosting site is where my knowledge starts to get a little shaky. I know the basics (bandwidth, sub-domains, re-write rules) but I would love your input, to help me formulate a check list of certain web-hosting services that I should be on the look-out for. Also I was wondering if there were any reliable hosting providers who give you the option to host both c# code-behinds and PHP code. As I would like to have two versions of my site, one in C# and one in PHP the hope is that if I need to look for another job this website will help me show possible employers my server side knowledge. I hope this is enough info, I did some researching online but found a bunch of unless articles and I've always have had luck on the StackExchange sites. So hopefully you, can help me. Thanks alot.

  I added a FB Like button to my Wordpress template, and when I click Like, I receive an error, which pops up and says: There was an error liking the page. In the cpanel, I selected nautilus for accessing web-disk and I was given a note: Note: In order for the Web Disk to work, you will need to allow port 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) on your computer's firewall. As, I am unable to connect to this, i.e. on entering the given url in Nautilus address bar, it says 'Connection closed'. So, I believe the above this quoted is not correctly configured.   I'm currently using godaddy for all of my company domains, and I'm very unsatisfied with their service, specially with their site, so we are trying to migrate those domains to another provider. The question is, How do I transfer my domains to another domain registrar? I'm not talking about transferring domain records (A, MX...) but to use the same domains with another provider, and redo all the configuration again.   I'm a web developer. When I start designing a site, I use a framework to handle templating for me, even if it's just rack + erubis. What do non-developers do? If you want to implement a site in HTML and CSS without a framework running on a webserver, without frames, and without WYSYWIG tools like Dreamweaver... how do you avoid copy-and-pasting the HTML of your navigation (for example) on every single page you're writing? I feel stupid asking this because it seems like their must be an obvious answer, but for the life of me, I can't think of one right now.

  This is the case: My site is getting a lot of trafic from an image (a company logo image) because this image is ranked 1.st in google search results for a company's title.   Possible Duplicate: Why don't TITLE tags get indexed in google? Hello there, I have a h1 element on my page which is working great. I have also been using the title attribute on this element which I don't think has been causing much harm at all. My h1 title is "The Great Ocean Road" and the title attribute on that is "Great Ocean Road" - so it's a variation of the h1 text. These are both keywords for the site so i'm hoping it's a good thing for seo. Is that a bad idea do you think? I'm not sure what Search Engines think about using a title attribute or even if they would 'mark me down' for doing it in such a way. Do you think if the h1 text is "The Great Ocean Road", the title attribute should be "The Great Ocean Road" aswell? Thank you in advance

• Which is the appropriate content-type meta tag value ?

  I have a question about the meta tag content-type. When starting to build my site (HTML+PHP+JS), I copied a lot of the meta tags over from elsewhere, and I have, amongst others, the following: <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="application/xhtml+xml; charset=iso-8859-1" /> Now, I've seen that tag is being used a lot with the value "text/html". I've been searching the web but could not find a comprehensive explanation regarding what the difference between both is. The "text/html" intuitively sounds more straightforward to me. Should I change my tag to that, or might the "application/xhtml+xml" be an equivalent solution ? Alternatively, can anyone point me to a resource where the different values for these tags are listed and explained in a clear manner? Thanks in advance

• Magento not responding to payment gateway notifications fast enough or at all?

  Some of our customers are getting to the confirmation of payment step in purchasing from our Magento store, and then they are getting a timeout error, where the SagePay payment gateway is trying to contact our server to tell it that a payment was successful (or not…) but it cannot contact our server, or cannot get a response from our server in a timely manner, and then the payment/order is being cancelled. I've raised this question to my hosting company, but all they told me was: "This is down to the way the software is configured on your server" This is currently a Magento 1.4.0.1 standard installation as far as payment gateways are concerned. What on earth could this statement mean? Is there some configuration that I need to do to make Magento listen to these requests and respond properly?
