• Inline code within HEAD section of ASP Web Form

  Today I needed to include inline code within the HEAD section of an Web Form in order to dynamically include stylesheets based on the theme set for the application.   Below is an example:      <link href="../../Resources/Themes/<% = Page.Theme %>Grid.Default.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">   Upon saving and viewing the page I noted that the code was not being interpreted and instead was being treated as a string literal.  How to get around it?  Add a panel control in the HEAD section and place the links to the stylesheets as in the example above within the panel.  For whatever reason, ASP.NET does not want to interpret inline code in the HEAD section but will allow you to add .NET controls in the HEAD section.

  Can you mention some advanced OO topics or concepts that one should be aware of? I have been a developer for 2 years now and currently aiming for a certain company that requires a web developer with a minimum experience of 3 years. I imagine the interview will have the basic object oriented topics like (Abstraction, Polymorphism, Inheritance, Design patterns, UML, Databases and ORMs, SOLID principles, DRY principle, ...etc) I have these topics covered, but what I'm looking forward to is bringing up topics such as Efferent Coupling, Afferent Coupling, Instability, The law of Demeter, ...etc. Till few days ago I never knew such concepts existed (maybe because I'm a communication engineer basically not a CS graduate.) Can you please recommend some more advanced topics concerning object oriented programming?

• Ways of Gathering Event Information From the Internet

  What are the best ways of gathering information on events (any type) from the internet ? Keeping in mind that different websites will present information in different ways. I was thinking 'smart' web crawlers, but that can turn out to be extremely challenging, simply because of the hugely varied ways that different sites present their information. Then I was thinking of sifting through the official twitter feeds of organisations, people with knowledge of events .. etc and look for the event hash tag, grab the tweet and dissect it to grab the relevant information about the event. Information I am interested in gathering is: Date and Time of Event, Address where Event is being held, and any Celebrities (or any famous people) attending the event (if any). The reason to ask here is my hope that experienced folk will open my eyes to things I've missed, which I am sure I have.

  I applied for a Web developer job in Quebec City, and they called me back for a phone interview. Everything went well, it last for over a hours, and at the end they ask me to send code simple and a portfolio, but in my research about the company and their products I found a PHP error(bug) in their app. Should I tell them or I would that make me look like a total jerk and blow my chance for a interview? I know it might sound stupid. As a junior developer I did 2 interviews they didn't go so well. I see many, many books and tutorials out there so it is difficult to make a choice. I think most of web designers were like me in the past and have read many books. • Project development without experience

  I'm a web developer who is part of a three-man team that has been tasked with a rather large and complex development project. Other than some direction and impetus from management, we're pretty much on our own to develop the new website. None of us have any project management experience nor do my two coworkers seem like they would be interested in taking on that role, so I feel like it's up to me to implement some kind of structure to the development process in order to avoid issues down the road. • running jar in a terminal using axis2

  I'm trying to run in the command line a java application distributed in a jar file. It call an axis2 web service, so the jar contains a /axis2client directory with rampart.mar security module. It works fine while I run it in netbeans, but it throws an exception if I try to run it in a terminal using this command: java -jar myfile.jar The Exception: org.apache.axis2.AxisFault: invalid url: //file:/home/xxx/Desktop/myfile.jar!/axis2client/ (java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol: //file:/home/xxx/Desktop/myfile.jar) As you can see, it's trying to use the /axis2client directory inside the jar, as when I run it in Netbeans, but It fails with a MalformedURLException. I think it's something about the protocol 'file:', probably '//file:/' must be 'file:///'. The problem is that I cannot change this call to the directory because the method that loads the /axis2client directory it's not mine, it's from another library that use my project and include all the axis2 support. With the addition of these two data centres the number of Azure data centres across the globe has grown to 8 and 4 among them are located in US. • How do you put a database online?

  I have a very beginner question regarding web development. I've had some experience with JSP, Hibernate, and MAMP to create a simple system for tracking inventory and sales. But this was all done locally on one computer. This time, I want to create a system that could be accessible online. It's to help my mother track her business wherever she goes. So there would be similar aspects like tracking inventory and sales. I understand that you have to have a server in which to host all the files in. But I don't understand how you can access your database online. Or what sorts of applications or products should be used. Currently the host of my database is localhost. How do put it online such that you can still do CRUD operations? Are there any guides to do this?

• Licensing approach for .NET library that might be used desktop / web-service / cloud environment

  I am looking for advice how to architect licensing for a .NET library. I am not asking for tool/service recommendations or something like that. My library can be used in a regular desktop application, in an ASP.NET solution. And now Azure services come into play. Currently, for desktop applications the library checks if the application and company names from the version history are the same as the names the key was generated for. In other cases the library compares hardware IDs. Now there are problems: an Azure-enabled web-application can be run on different hardware each time (AFAIK) sometimes the hardware ID for the same hardware changes unexpectedly checking the hardware ID or version info might not be allowed in some circumstances (shared hosting for example) So, I am thinking about what approach I can take to architect a licensing scheme that: is friendly to customers (I do not try to fight piracy, but I do want to warn the customer if he uses the library on more servers than he paid for) can be used when there is no internet connection can be used on shared hosting What would you recommend?

• Web-based CMS for mobile app

  I'm just about to start developing a mobile app which needs to be fed from a CMS. I started designing the tables when I thought there must be something out there which could save me a load of time and let me concentrate on the mobile side of things. So, I'm looking for a CMS that will let me create hierarchical "pages" which will just be 4-5 database fields with a simple front-end to allow to edit and update them. I don't mind having to write some code to layout the database and forms etc, any saving on starting from scratch would be good. The only requirement is that I be able to access the data via some sort of web service, REST, JSON, XML, anything really... Can anyone suggest anything that might help? Thanks, J

• Was it necessary to build this site in ASP.NET ?

  From what I'm told, the whole StackOverflow/StackExchange 'stack' is based on Microsoft's ASP.NET. SO and the SE sites are probably the most complex that I visit on a regular basis. There's a lot going on in every page - lots of different boxes, pulling data from different places and changing dynamically and responding to user interaction. And the sites work very smoothly, despite the high traffic. My question is, could this have been achieved using a different platform/framework? Does ASP.NET lend itself to more complex projects where other web frameworks would strain and falter? Or is the choice pretty incidental?

• Proper way to measure the scalability of web Application

  Let's say that I have a web Application where i'm going to have 300 users and each one have to see data on real time, imagine that each client make an ajax call to the server to see in real time what's happens with the changes of the data, this calls are made each 300 ms per user. I know that i can run a simulation to see if the hardware of my server supports this example. But what happen's if the number of users start to grow up. Is there a way that i can measure the hardware needed to handle this growing behavior, a software, a formula, algorithm or maybe recommend me if i need to implement an distributed application with multiplies servers and balance the loads.

• When should I use AtomPub?

  I have been conducting some research into RESTful web service design and I've reached what I think is a key decision point so I thought I'd offer it up to the community to get some advice. In keeping with the principles of a RESTful architecture I want to present a discoverable API, so I will be supporting the various HTTP verbs as fully as possible. My difficulty comes with the choice of representation of those resources. You see, it would be easy for me to come up with my own API that covers how search results are to be presented and how links to other resources are provided, but this would be unique to my application. I've read about the Atom Publishing Protocol (RFC 5023), and how OData promotes its use, but it seems to add an extra level of abstraction over what is (currently) a rather simple API. So my question is, when should a developer select AtomPub as their choice of representation - if at all? And if not, what is the current recommended approach?

• Why get dedicated hosting? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I just finished writing a website and I'm about to publish it. I was looking at hosting options and I was about to get regular hosting from godaddy, which is about $6 a month with unlimited bandwidth, 150 gb of data, 500 emails and 25 mysql databases. The other option is dedicated servers, which range a lot in price, but are around $200 a month. Why would someone choose dedicated servers? Is it becuase they max the limits of regular hosting or is it because the ram/cpu is shared on regular hosting? If the latter, what will happen if a lot of users come to my site and max the ram/cpu?

• Should I be paid for time spent learning a framework?

  To give light to the situation: I am currently one of two programmers working in a small startup software company. Part of my job requires me to learn a Web development framework that I am not currently familiar with. I get paid by the hour. So the question is: Is it wholly ethical to spend multiple hours of the day reading through documentation and tutorials and be paid for this time where I am not actively developing for our product? Or should the bulk of this learning be done at home, or otherwise off hours, to allow for more full-on development of our application during the work day?

• Multi-platform Map Application

  I'm working on a web project (PHP, jQuery) which currently using Google Maps powering up the map functionality of the application, however we need to make it multi-platform like you can go to the dashboard and choose one from 5-10 map providers (which Goolge Maps is just one of them) to underlying your map functionality. So, as the application is supposed to show the data on map, almost in every single place we have to deal with the API provided by that specific map provider. Currently we are thinking about revising our modular structure and/or making something like an adapter for each provider to deal with their native syntax but via our standard methods. I wish to have your ideas and your experiences, specially if you ever made an interface for dealing via 2-3 different map providers. That would helps much and I really appreciate that. If you need any further information, just ask me to update the question. • How to deal with social login

  In my new web app I'm going to allow social login through Twitter (maybe), Facebook and Google and I'm in search of the best way to do it. Actually I'm using Rails with Devise + Omniauth and this is the problem: Should I ask the user to choose a password so that he can login without a social network? Or maybe the user should be able to set a password if he want (for example when editing his account?) The second way seems the best one but since Twitter doesn't provide user email and google doesn't provide an username I'll probably have to ask the user for username/email when he log in so in that case I may also ask for the password... waht do you think?

• Cheerp -- C++ for web: advance or regression?

  Recently I've run into Cheerp, a C++ to Javascript compiler, which uses a modified version of clang to generate Javascript code from C++ sources. That makes me wonder: why in the seven kingdoms would someone do this in their right mind? I mean: why would you take a language that is not designed for web at all, that is far more convoluted and bureaucratic, write your code and then compile it into Javascript itself? Can anybody see any advantages in doing so? We surely can discard performance as a reason, because in the end it generates pure Javascript code. Is there anyone here that have real experience with this? P.S.: I'm not sure if this is an on topic question, but this is the most general forum about programming that I could find in the StackExchange network. Edit Although this seems like a subjective question, it is not. I am asking for reasons that this tool could be useful. I got interested at first, but started wondering why would someone use it.
