    What is a better approach when it comes to performance and optimal resource utilization: accessing a database multiple times through AJAX to only get the exact information needed when it is needed, or performing one access to retrieve an object that holds all information that might be needed, with a high probability that not all is actually needed? I know how to benchmark the actual queries, but I don't know how to test what is best when it comes to database performance when thousands of users are accessing the database simultaneously and how connection pooling comes into play.

    In this post I'll demonstrate how to make a simple collapsible menu using jQuery. To get started let's go ahead and fire up Visual Studio and create a new WebForm.  Now let's build our menu by adding some div, p and anchor tags. On mouseover, the highlightRow css class is added to <a> element and on mouse out we remove the css class to revert the style to its default look. at line 6 we will hide all the elements that has a class name set as "section" and if you look at the mark up above it is refering to the <div> elements right after each <p> element. At line 7.. what it does is it looks for a <p> element that is a direct child of the element that has an ID of "Menu" and then attach the click event to toggle the visibilty of the section.   • Setting the SlideShowExtender's Index

    The AJAX SlideShowExtender is pretty useful. It does what it says and works without much fuss. There was one trick I needed it to perform that I could not find natively within the control. That was to set the slide’s current index. With a little JavaScript however I could make the control do what I wanted. The example below assumes a few things. First you already have a SlideShowExtender setup and working (or see this post). Second this SlideShowExtender is on a page all by itself so the index to set the slide to is passed in the URL. The scenario I had was this SSE was showing full images, the index was passed from another page that had a SSE showing thumbnails. It does not have anything else to do with setting the slide index. The code in the pageLoad function sets the index on the slide_currentIndex line. The slider.setCurrentImage() line does pretty much what it says. I added the slider._slider = ‘’ to avoid an error (not a show stopper just a bit annoying).   • Should I use my own public API on my site (via JS)?

    First of all, this question is far more different other 'public api questions' like this: Should a website use its own public API?, second, sorry for my English. You can find the question summarized at the bottom of this question. What I want to achieve is a big website with a public api, so who like programming (like me) and likes my website, can replicate my website's data with a much better approach (of course with some restrictions). Almost everything could be used by the public API. Because of this, I was thinking about making the whole website AJAX driven. There would be parts of the API which would be limited only to my website (domain), like login, registering. There would be only an INTERFACE on the client side, which would use the public and private API to make this interface working. The website would be ONLY CLIENT SIDE, well, I mean, the website would only use AJAX to use the api. How do I imagine this? The website would be like a mobile application, the application only sending a request to a webserver, which returns a json, the application parses it, and uses it to advance in the application. (e.g.: login) My thoughts: Pros: The whole website is built up by javascript, this means I don't need to transfer the html to the client, saving bandwidth. (I hope so) Anyone can use up the data of my website to make their own cool things. (Is this a con or pro? O_O) The public API is always in use, so I can see if there are any error. Cons: Without Javascript the website is unusable. The bad guys easily can load the server with requesting too much data (like Request Per Second 10000), but this can be countered via limiting this with some PHP code and logging. Probably much more work So the question in some words is: Should I build my website around my own api? Is it good to work only on the client side? Is this good for a big website? (e.x.: facebook, yeah facebook is a different story, but could it run with an 'architecture' like this?)

Thus, the entire app is written in html/css/javascript and ajax calls to the service are made to fetch data and changes are made through javascript or B) you have an MVC-like stack on a server, only instead of the controllers calling to the model layer directly, they call to the service API which return models that are used to render the traditional views or C) something else?

    I am having an intermittent issue that is appearing on one server only, and is causing all MVC pages to fail to load with the error "An item with the same key has already been added." Custom event details: As mentioned, it's every MVC action that throws this error until the app pool is restarted, and the error seems to be occurring in System.Web.WebPages.Scope.WebConfigScopeDictionary.TryGetValue(Object key, Object& value) Has anyone seen this issue before? It's only happening on this server, on any of the app pools on the server (not confined to this one) and an app pool restart sorts it. Any help much appreciated. Cheers, Matthew

  • How to page while maintaining the querystring values in ASP.Net Mvc 2

    I am using the pager provided by Martijin Boland to implementing paging in my Asp.Net Mvc 2 application. My form uses the GET method to send all parameters to the querystring, it is a search form with several form elements. <% using (Html.BeginForm("SearchResults", "Search", FormMethod.Get)) {%> On the SearchResults View I am trying to implement paging: <div class="pager"> <%= Html.Pager(Model.PageSize, Model.PageNumber, Model.TotalItemCount, new { Request.QueryString })%> </div> The Html.Pager has some overloads which I am not too clear on how to use. The Request.QueryString makes the querystring look like this: http://localhost:1155/Search/SearchResults?QueryString=Distance%3D10%26txtZip%3D%26cb&page=2 Should it not be like this? http://localhost:1155/Search/SearchResults?Distance=20&txtZip=10021&page=2
