I have two large vectors, I am trying to do some sort of element multiplication, where an even-numbered element in the first vector is multiplied by the next odd-numbered element in the second vector .... and where the odd-numbered element in the first vector is multiplied by the preceding even-numbered element in the second vector Ex. vector 1 is V1(1) V1(2) V1(3) V1(4) vector 2 is V2(1) V2(2) V2(3) V2(4) V1(1) * V2(2) V1(3) * V2(4) V1(2) * V2(1) V1(4) * V2(3) I have written a Cuda code to do this: (Pds has the elements of the first vector in shared memory, Nds the second Vector) //instead of using %2 .. i check for the first bit to decide if number is odd/even -- faster if ((tx & 0x0001) == 0x0000) Nds[tx+1] = Pds[tx] * Nds[tx+1]; else Nds[tx-1] = Pds[tx] * Nds[tx-1]; __syncthreads(); Is there anyway to further accelerate this code or avoid divergence ? • LINQ OrderBy with more than one field

  I have a list that I need sorted by two fields. I've tried using OrderBy in LINQ but that only allows me to specify one field. I'm looking for the list to be sorted by the first field and then if there are any duplicates in the first field to sort by the second field. For example I want the results to look like this (sorted by last name then first name). Adams, John Smith, James Smith, Peter Thompson, Fred I've seen that you can use the SQL like syntax to accomplish this but I am looking for a way to do it with the OrderBy method. • Sorting array containing strings in objective c

  Hello experts! I have an array named 'names' with strings looking like this: ["name_23_something", "name_25_something", "name_2_something"]; Now I would like to sort this array in ascending order so it looks like this: ["name_25_something", "name_23_something", "name_2_something"]; I guess that should start of with extracting the numbers since I want that the sorting is done by them: for(NSString *name in arr) { NSArray *nameSegments = [name componentsSeparatedByString:@"_"]; NSLog("number: %@", (NSString*)[nameSegments objectAtIndex:1]); } I'm thinking of creating a dictionary with the keys but I'm not sure if that is the correct objective-c way, maybe there some some methods I could use instead? • Are we in a functional programming fad?

  I use both functional and imperative languages daily, and it's rather amusing to see the surge of adoption of functional languages from both sides of the fence. It strikes me, however, that it looks rather like a fad. Do you think that it's a fad? I know the reasons for using functional languages at times and imperative languages in others, but do you really think that this trend will continue due to the cliched "many-core" revolution that has been only "18 months from now" since 2004 (sort of like communism's Radiant Future), or do you think that it's only temporary; a fascination of the mainstream developer that will be quickly replaced by the next shiny idea, like Web 3.0 or GPGPU? Note, that I'm not trying to start a flamewar or anything (sorry if it sounds bitter), I'm just curious as to whether people will think functional or functional/imperative languages will become mainstream. Edit: By mainstream, I mean, equal number of programmers to say, Python, Java, C#, etc

Now just so i have a goal in mind, I picked angry birds as my initial target of what sort of game play would I like to learn to build. This is not going to be a market release game. This is totally going to be learning purposes only. So to start off my question is: Would something like this be achievable using Cocos2d? How would I go about building the physics for this? • Mass-mailing without getting your domain banned

  I plan on sending an email to 10k+ email addresses (mostly gmail and yahoo) to announce the launch of my startup's product. I'm planning on using PHPMailer or PHPList to send out the mails. I've never mass-mailed before and had a few basic questions. I've already browsed through some of the other mass-mail threads on this forum but the questions remain hence a new thread. Are newsletters which are sent by so many other organizations sent out in a similar manner - using programs such as PHPMailer or PHPList? When would a GMail or a Yahoo blacklist my domain name - are there any set parameters - 1000 emails in an hour would result in getting banned or some such parameters? If yes, then what sort of settings should I take note of when sending the emails - any format of the email or spread out the 10+ emails over 2 days etc.? If a Gmail or a Yahoo blacklists your domain name - is there any way to get out of the blacklist?

  Hi there, Im using entity framework 1.0 and trying to feed out a Gridview with a objectdatasource that have access to my facade. The problem is, that it seems to be particulary difficult and haven't seen anything that realy do what i want it to do on the internet. For those who know, a gridview feeded with an objectdatasource, it can't sort automaticaly then you must do it manually. It's not that bad. Where it becomes a nightmare, its when we add paging and filter settings to a gridview's datasource. After many hours searching on the internet, i'm asking you, guys, if anyone knows a link that can explain me how to mix Pagging, Sorting and filtering for a gridview and an objectdatasource! • GUI Design - Roleselection with two lists, selected roles on the right, or left list?

  Hi, image two lists for selecting roles for a new user creation in an administrator frontend. One list has all available roles in it and another has the selected roles in it. Between those lists are buttons to move elements from one list to another. Thus the layout is horizontal with [List] [Buttons] [List]. Now to the question: Should the selected elements be on the left, or the right list? Intuitively some people I asked say, that the selected elements have to be on the right list. But some other people follow some sort of guideline that says, that the more important stuff in a frontend has to be on the left side. Also they think the selected elements are more important than the non-selected and so the selected ones have to be on the left side. Whats your opinion?

  Hi, I'm trying to sort an array of objects by a common property, however I cannot get my $property parameter to register in the inner function (I can use it in the outer one OK). The way I read the documentation, it sounded like the parameter would be available, have I misunderstood something? • When using the getInstance() method of the abstract java.text.NumberFormat class, what is the actual

  This question expands upon the one at abstract-class-numberformat-very-confused-about-getinstance. I feel that this question is different enough to merit being asked on its own. In the answers to that question, it was stated that a code statement such as NumberFormat en = NumberFormat.getInstance(Locale.US); returns an object that is a subclass of the java.text.NumberFormat class. It makes sense to me why the return type can't be just an instance of NumberFormat since that is an abstract class. Rather, it was stated that the returned object is at least an instance of NumberFormat, but actually something else. My question is this: what specifically is the class of the object that is returned? In the Sun documentation the only subclasses I see are ChoicesFormat and DecimalFormat. Is there some sort of behind the scenes compiler voodoo going on here? Thanks in advance!

• Is there any way to limit the size of an STL Map?

  I want to implement some sort of lookup table in C++ that will act as a cache. It is meant to emulate a piece of hardware I'm simulating. The keys are non-integer, so I'm guessing a hash is in order. I have no intention of inventing the wheel so I intend to use stl::map for this (though suggestions for alternatives are welcome). The question is, is there any way to limit the size of the hash to emulate the fact that my hardware is of finite size? I'd expect the hash's insert method to return an error message or throw an exception if the limit is reached. If there is no such way, I'll simply check its size before trying to insert, but that seems like an inelegant way to do it.

• Android VideoView plays 2 videos at the same time

  I ma trying to play a videoview on top of another video view. the first video view is paused, while the second is playing. It appears to work but no second video appears on he screen (though I hear the audio and see the controls that would normally appear on top). I am assuming this is some sort of Zorder issue. Any thoughts. By the way, I have no problem displaying other views on top of the main video view and having the video fill the background.

  I need to create a simple app which can display geometries from Oracle Spatial in C#. These geometries are exported from AutoCAD Map 3D 2010 to Oracle Spatial. I need to pan, zoom, manage layers of these objects, events (like right click to popup a contextual menu, potentially different for every object), creating/deleting points (maybe also other polygons): a sort of simple AutoCAD interface. Should I look for an AutoCAD OEM license? Is there a drawing framework which can handle this or do I need to create my own?

• How do I put my return data from an asmx into JSON? I'm having trouble finding decent literature

  I want to return an array of javascript objects from my asp.net asmx file. ie. variable = [ { *value1*: 'value1', *value2*: 'value2', ..., }, { . . } ]; I seem have been having trouble reaching this. I'd put this into code but I've been hacking away at it so much it'd probably do more harm than good in having this answered. Basically I am using a web service to find names as people type the name. I'd use a regular text file or something but its a huge database that's always changing - and don't worry I've indexed the names so searching can be a little snappier - but I would really prefer to stick with this method and just figure out how to get usable JSON back to javascript. I've seen a few that sort of attempt to describe how one would approach this but I honestly think microsofts articles are damn near unreadable. Thanks in advance for assistance.

• Determining which JavaScript/CSS browser features are required

  My website uses a variety of technologies, such as JQuery, new CSS definitions (e.g., moz-selection, -webkit-user-select), etc. The site works perfectly with Google Chrome and Safari, but has some quirkiness in Firefox, IE, and some of the other browsers. I want to write a script to check for necessary browser features but, with several thousand lines of code and CSS definitions, I'm not certain which features I should be looking for. Is there some sort of online analysis (similar to how JSLint operates) that would tell me which features my script and CSS files need? Are there tools (like FireBug) that provide this info?

  Okay, so I have classes class B<T> : A<T> class L : K and a method void Method(A<K> a) {...} What I would like to do is this b = new B<L>(); Method(b); //error But it is not possible to b to the correct type. Indeed it is not possible to make this cast A<K> t = new A<L>(); //error I would really like to not have to change the internals of Method. I have no problems making changes to B and/or L. Do I have any options for making some sort of workaround? I guess it should be possible for Method to execute all of its method calls etc. on b, since B derives from A and L derives from K?

• How can I transform this haml into a table?

Right now, this renders as a set of buttons. I'd like to render it as a table, with each row clickable in the same way (ie, using the 'post' method, so that only the haml file has to be edited without touching the rest of the files). Ideally, I'd also like to be able to sort the table by name, time, or comments, but that might be getting ahead of myself. So how can I change this list of buttons into a table with clickable rows?

• Global variable life in Javascript - destroyed on a reload?

  (I am learning Javascript) Problem: A page I am working on has 2 views, a data entry view with a textbox and a data rendering view. There is a a href src="currentpage#" link that switches between the 2 views. In order to transmit data from view to view, the javascript parses it from the current HTML and pushes it into the correct form for the other view. This is ugly and I want to refactor it out, ideally into some sort of global where it can be neatly rendered down into the view on command (I'm refactoring the code base to a point where I can AJAX it from a server). However, I am not certain about scoping rules and variable life in JS.

• Workaround for floats in DOMPDF

  DOMPDF does not support floats. However I am listing many tables, and they are mainly key & value pairs. I would like 2 of these tables to appear side by side. i.e. if I could use floats HTML <table id="stuff"> ... </table> <table id="other-stuff"> ... </table> CSS table#stuff { float: left; } table#other-stuff { float: right; } What sort of workaround can I do to support this? Or is it impossible?

• Way to check files in and out with multiple developers.

  I am a web developer working with 2-3 people including me. Our current setup is very simplistic. We try to let each other know when we are working on a specific file. We use FTP to edit our files. Recently we have run into the problem of 2 people accidentally editing one file, or working on a local file then uploading when another person just did the same. From what I have read I need some sort of control system. I have heard of subversion and mercurial. It seems that these systems may not be what I need though, since its just giving me different versions of the files. I don't know if it solves the issue of two people working on a file and overwriting each others work. What are your suggestions for solving my problem?

• Any ideas on how to implement a 'touchMoveOver' event in Javascript?

  I'm faffing around with SVG, specifically for web content aimed at iPad users. I've created a little dial type thingy that I'm calling a "cheese board" that I'd like to use as an interface element. http://appliedworks.co.uk/files/times/SVGTests/raphael.html Clicking on a piece of cheese (to keep the analogy going) will do "something". That bit's easy. However, I'd like the user to be able to drag their finger around the 'cheese board', firing a new event (touchesMovedOver?) every time they their finger moves over a new piece of cheese. But I can't figure out how to do it since there's no 'mouseOver' equivalent for touch interfaces. If the whole thing was made of squares, I could have created some sort of 'rectContainsPoint' method to be called for every 'touchesMoved', but that approach wouldn't work here. If anyone has any idea about how something like this could be achieved, I'd love to hear it.

  I am having trouble defining and automating my build process despite simple requirements: Every build should have a unique build number. Every tagged release should be reproducible What I have: A C++, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x, Subversion development environment. A build machine ( actually a virtual machine ) A version.h file with #defines for major, minor, and buildnumber. A script for incrementing the version.h buildnumber. A rpmbuild spec file that exports the tagged Subversion source, builds, and makes the rpm installer packages. Questions: Assuming multiple developers per project, when should the build number be incremented and version.h file be checked-in? The build machine? Some sort of Subversion hook? • What is the right approach when using STL container for median calculation?

  Let's say I need to retrieve the median from a sequence of 1000000 random numeric values. If using anything but STL::list, I have no (built-in) way to sort sequence for median calculation. If using STL::list, I can't randomly access values to retrieve middle (median) of sorted sequence. Is it better to implement sorting myself and go with e.g. STL::vector, or is it better to use STL::list and use STL::list::iterator to for-loop-walk to the median value? The latter seems less overheadish, but also feels more ugly.. Or are there more and better alternatives for me?

Must it be just raw Javascript and use the Prototype's Ajax success response to call the static Javascript code, or can it be some Rails mechanism related to RJS?

  How can we Implement Bisect Python functionality in PHP Implement function bisect_left($arr, $item); as a pure-PHP routine to do a binary-bisection search for the position at which to insert $item into $list, maintaining the sort order therein. Assumptions: Assume that $arr is already sorted by whatever comparisons would be yielded by the stock PHP < operator, and that it's indexed on ints. The function should return an int, representing the index within the array at which $item would be inserted to maintain the order of the array. The returned index should be below any elements in $arr equal to $item, i.e., the insertion index should be "to the left" of anything equal to $item. Search routine should not be linear! That is, it should honor the name, and should attempt to find it by iteratively bisecting the list and comparing only around the midpoint.
