• Is there any way to limit the size of an STL Map?

  I want to implement some sort of lookup table in C++ that will act as a cache. It is meant to emulate a piece of hardware I'm simulating. The keys are non-integer, so I'm guessing a hash is in order. I have no intention of inventing the wheel so I intend to use stl::map for this (though suggestions for alternatives are welcome). The question is, is there any way to limit the size of the hash to emulate the fact that my hardware is of finite size? I'd expect the hash's insert method to return an error message or throw an exception if the limit is reached. If there is no such way, I'll simply check its size before trying to insert, but that seems like an inelegant way to do it.

• How do I put my return data from an asmx into JSON? I'm having trouble finding decent literature

  I want to return an array of javascript objects from my asp.net asmx file. ie. variable = [ { *value1*: 'value1', *value2*: 'value2', ..., }, { . . } ]; I seem have been having trouble reaching this. I'd put this into code but I've been hacking away at it so much it'd probably do more harm than good in having this answered. Basically I am using a web service to find names as people type the name. I'd use a regular text file or something but its a huge database that's always changing - and don't worry I've indexed the names so searching can be a little snappier - but I would really prefer to stick with this method and just figure out how to get usable JSON back to javascript. I've seen a few that sort of attempt to describe how one would approach this but I honestly think microsofts articles are damn near unreadable. Thanks in advance for assistance.

• How do you handle very old browsers on your site?

  Hi. We have a non-profit web site that got about 5 million hits in May. Of those, about 5,700 were from IE 5.x or lower; about 4,000 were from folks with Netscape 4.x or lower. We know that the current site's layout works for newer browsers and we're testing it on IE6 as well (along with Chrome, Opera, Safari, and Firefox). How do you handle the folks with the older browsers? Because of jQuery libraries and such, the pages might not function correctly on those old browsers. Is there an easy way to show a text-only version on browsers that can't handle the CSS and jQuery goodies? How do large sites handle this sort of thing? I've used the @embed to hide the stylesheet from Netscape 4.x, but not sure beyond that.

• Determining which JavaScript/CSS browser features are required

  My website uses a variety of technologies, such as JQuery, new CSS definitions (e.g., moz-selection, -webkit-user-select), etc. The site works perfectly with Google Chrome and Safari, but has some quirkiness in Firefox, IE, and some of the other browsers. I want to write a script to check for necessary browser features but, with several thousand lines of code and CSS definitions, I'm not certain which features I should be looking for. Is there some sort of online analysis (similar to how JSLint operates) that would tell me which features my script and CSS files need? Are there tools (like FireBug) that provide this info?

• Way to check files in and out with multiple developers.

  I am a web developer working with 2-3 people including me. Our current setup is very simplistic. We try to let each other know when we are working on a specific file. We use FTP to edit our files. Recently we have run into the problem of 2 people accidentally editing one file, or working on a local file then uploading when another person just did the same. From what I have read I need some sort of control system. I have heard of subversion and mercurial. It seems that these systems may not be what I need though, since its just giving me different versions of the files. I don't know if it solves the issue of two people working on a file and overwriting each others work. What are your suggestions for solving my problem?

• A database of questions with unambiguous numeric answers.

  I (and co-hackers) are building a sort of trivia game inspired by this blog post: http://messymatters.com/calibration. The idea is to give confidence intervals and learn how to be calibrated (when you're "90% sure" you should be right 90% of the time). We're thus looking for, ideally, thousands of questions with unambiguous numerical answers. Also, they shouldn't be too boring. There are a lot of random statistics out there -- eg, enclosed water area in different countries -- that would make the game mind-numbing. Things like release dates of classic movies are more interesting (to most people). Other interesting ones we've found include Olympic records, median incomes for different professions, dates of famous inventions, and celebrity ages. • Android VideoView plays 2 videos at the same time

  I ma trying to play a videoview on top of another video view. the first video view is paused, while the second is playing. It appears to work but no second video appears on he screen (though I hear the audio and see the controls that would normally appear on top). I am assuming this is some sort of Zorder issue. Any thoughts. By the way, I have no problem displaying other views on top of the main video view and having the video fill the background.

• C# Drawing Oracle Spatial Geometries

  I need to create a simple app which can display geometries from Oracle Spatial in C#. These geometries are exported from AutoCAD Map 3D 2010 to Oracle Spatial. I need to pan, zoom, manage layers of these objects, events (like right click to popup a contextual menu, potentially different for every object), creating/deleting points (maybe also other polygons): a sort of simple AutoCAD interface. Should I look for an AutoCAD OEM license? Is there a drawing framework which can handle this or do I need to create my own?

I have two large vectors, I am trying to do some sort of element multiplication, where an even-numbered element in the first vector is multiplied by the next odd-numbered element in the second vector .... and where the odd-numbered element in the first vector is multiplied by the preceding even-numbered element in the second vector Ex. vector 1 is V1(1) V1(2) V1(3) V1(4) vector 2 is V2(1) V2(2) V2(3) V2(4) V1(1) * V2(2) V1(3) * V2(4) V1(2) * V2(1) V1(4) * V2(3) I have written a Cuda code to do this: (Pds has the elements of the first vector in shared memory, Nds the second Vector) //instead of using %2 .. i check for the first bit to decide if number is odd/even -- faster if ((tx & 0x0001) == 0x0000) Nds[tx+1] = Pds[tx] * Nds[tx+1]; else Nds[tx-1] = Pds[tx] * Nds[tx-1]; __syncthreads(); Is there anyway to further accelerate this code or avoid divergence .. • c printing string syntax

  Hello guys, Just stuck on c syntax regarding strings. Say I have a string like (name[5]="peter";) in c say if I just wanted to print the last character of string or check the last character of the string, which in this case would be 'r' how can I do this? The way I was thinking does not seem to work name[5]="peter"; if(name[5]=="r") printf("last character of name is r"); Question: is there some sort of function to do this that can check one character of array, is a certain value, like name[5] is 'r' in string peter or likewise name[1] is 'n' Also how do I use printf to print that certain char, having problems using printf("last character of name is %s",name[5]) ??? • HQL query for entity with max value

  I have a Hibernate entity that looks like this (accessors ommitted for brevity): @Entity @Table(name="FeatureList_Version") @SecondaryTable(name="FeatureList", pkJoinColumns=@PrimaryKeyJoinColumn(name="FeatureList_Key")) public class FeatureList implements Serializable { @Id @Column(name="FeatureList_Version_Key") private String key; @Column(name="Name",table="FeatureList") private String name; @Column(name="VERSION") private Integer version; } I want to craft an HQL query that retrieves the most up to date version of a FeatureList. The following query sort of works: Select f.name, max(f.version) from FeatureList f group by f.name The trouble is that won't populate the key field, which I need to contain the key of the record with the highest version number for the given FeatureList. If I add f.key in the select it won't work because it's not in the group by or an aggregate and if I put it in the group by the whole thing stops working and it just gives me every version as a separate entity. So, can anybody help?

• Is there a way to make vim display "virtual characters" before/after regular patterns in the buffer?

  Vim has list and listchars options that make vim display "virtual characters" (by which I mean characters that aren't actually in the buffer) in certain situations. For example, you can make trailing spaces look like something else, or add a visible character to represent the newline character. I'd like to be able to enable the display of certain characters either before or after certain regular patterns ((perhaps syntax items). Sort of like syntax highlighting, but instead of just changing the color/styling of characters that are in the buffer, I'd like to display extra characters that aren't in the buffer. For example, I'd like to display a virtual : (colon) after all occurrences of the word "where" that appear at the end of a line. Is this possible, and if so, what is the necessary vimscript to do it?

Right now, this renders as a set of buttons. I'd like to render it as a table, with each row clickable in the same way (ie, using the 'post' method, so that only the haml file has to be edited without touching the rest of the files). Ideally, I'd also like to be able to sort the table by name, time, or comments, but that might be getting ahead of myself. So how can I change this list of buttons into a table with clickable rows?

  Hello Guys, Im trying to query a sort of from - to date. e.g. 20-01-2010 to 20-02-2010. this should include the mentioned dates. i've tried the following queries but none works. select * from [tableName] where date = '20-01-2010' AND date <= '20-02-2010' the date where date is equal to 20-02-2010 does not show. i don't know why. select * from [tableName] where date between '20-01-2010' AND '20-02-2010' the mentioned dates is not included in the results. i want it to be included in the results. please help. thanks in advance! :)

• Windows Phone 7, MVVM, Silverlight and navigation best practice / patterns and strategies

  Whilst building a Windows Phone 7 app. using the MVVM pattern we've struggled to get to grips with a pattern or technique to centralise navigation logic that will fit with MVVM. To give an example, everytime the app. calls our web service we check that the logon token we've assigned the app. earlier hasn't expired. We always return some status to the phone from the web service and one of those might be Enum.AuthenticationExpired. If we receive that I'd imagine we'd alert the user and navigate back to the login screen. (this is one of many examples of status we might receive) Now, wanting to keep things DRY, that sort of logic feels like it should be in one place. Therein lies my question. How should I go about modelling navigation that relies on (essentially) switch or if statements to tell us where to navigate to next without repeating that in every view. Are there recognised patterns or techniques that someone could recommend? Thanks

• Storing UTF-8 XML using Word's CustomXMLPart or any other supported way

  I am writing a Word add-in which is supposed to store some own XML data per document using Word object model and its CustomXMLPart. The problem I am now facing is the lack of IStream-like functionality for reading/writing XML to/from a CustomXMLPart. It only provides BSTR interface and I am puzzled how to handle UTF-8 XMLs with BSTRs. To my understanding an UTF-8 XML file should really never have to undergo this sort of Unicode conversion. I am not sure what to expect as a result here. Is there another way of using Word automation interfaces to store arbitrary custom information inside a DOCX file?

  How do you know that as many bugs as possiblle have been discovered and solved in a program? Couple of years ago I have read a document about debugging (I think it was some sort of HOWTO). Among other things, that document described a technique in which the programming team deliberately adds bugs into the code and passes it to the QA team. The QA process is considered completed when all the deliberately known bugs have been discovered. Unfortunately, I cannot find this document, or any similar one with description of this trick. Can someone please point me to such a document?

  I have one table with two queries and I need to sort it with descending type using ORDER BY. I want to make an order that 1st will display note that has more messages to few, or by another words using DESCending type. This is the display on the page I want to do: Open dialog with name2.   I've been involved in some interviews at work recently, and having seen a few CVs, I've been thinking of my own. I wonder how I might rate my proficiency at the various technologies I've worked with on some sort of simple scale: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert. I've been doing C# for a few years now, but I'd hesitate to call myself "expert" particularly (partly because surely I haven't been doing it long enough, and partly because I can't bring myself to be so bold as to say I'm expert at anything). I think I probably was expert at VB back when I got into programming, but any VB skills I had will have deteriorated by now. Of course I wouldn't even bother listing things on my CV that I'd consider myself to be "beginner" at, I'd just add them to the "other tech" category, but I'd be interested to hear tips on helping me decide.

• Bandwidth for Silverlight Apps

  I have a idea of building sort of a simple online version of Microsoft Visio. The application will be built using silverlight capabilties. People will be able to design flowcharts similar to how they do in Visio and they will be able to collaborate and work simultaneously on the the design. Now, I need to get an idea of the bandwidth such an application might consume. I am not sure how silverligt internally work so I need to get an idea whether such an application can be built in a way that make it economically feasible to sell such a product in a software as a service model.

• Specification, modeling and programming are principially the same, right?

  In formal specifications based on abstract algebraic types and equational theory you use formulas of equational theory to specify theory. System which will satisfy those constraints is called in formal logic a model. Modeling is process of creating a model, which abstracts of some aspects, which are unnecessary details for a specific case. So concrete system has to adhere to created model in observed aspects. Programming is a process of creating a program which will have specific behaviour - will perform specific algorithms - and programming languages through different paradigms enable us to think in a certain specific way, which abstracts of some details, usually machine specific ones. So could we be doing all those things at the same time, because they are principially the same? Is declarative programming the nearest attempt to do that? Could we use some sort f programming languages which will be good for programming as well as for modeling and specification?

• How to Access a Private Variable?

  This question isn't meant to sound as blatantly insulting as it probably is right now. This is a homework assignment, and the spec sheet is scarce and poorly designed to say the least. We have a function: double refuel( int liter, GasStation *gs ) { // TODO: Access private variable MaxFuel of gs and decrement. } Sound simple enough? It should be, but the class GasStation comes with no function that accesses the private variable MaxFuel. So how can I access it anyway using the function refuel? I'm not considering creating a function setFuel( int liter ) because the teacher always complains rather energetically if I change his specification. So... I guess I have to do some sort of hack around it, but I'm not sure how to go about this without explicitely changing the only function in GasStation and giving it a parameter so that I can call it here. Any hints perhaps?
