  • Can I mount a volume at /Users on OS X?

    I'm considering purchasing a SSD for my Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, I can't afford a large one, so I'm thinking of moving the current hard drive to the optical bay. On a Linux system, I would mount the second drive at /home. Given that OS X is Unix, I'm thinking it should be possible to do the same thing. Has anyone done this before? Edit: I should mention I'm running Snow Leopard.

  • Dell XPS Problem

    Hi, Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas?

  • "Error loading operating system": Win7/Vista

    Hey fellas, Have this computer for about 2 years now. Originally had Vista installed, now have Windows 7 installed. Both on separate hard drives. Also have another drive used strictly for media. About a week ago, the Vista hard drive started going on its way out. Was getting problems on startup. After a few BIOS settings, I was able to get into Windows 7 and everything was fine. However, I started remembering the startup issues, so I deleted the bootup for Vista under msconfig. Didn't restart the computer at that time, though. For a few days, everything was ok. Last night I play a little poker, then hit the hay. I wake up to a good ole "Error loading operating system" on the screen. Just wonderful. Looks like the computer restarted overnight (auto updates, anyone?). So, after a big of finagling and half hearted tries, I can't get past the "Error loading operating system" screen. FWIW, in the BIOS it can see my hard drives fine. So I move on. I get my Windows 7 installation disk to try and do a repair. Go in the BIOS, change boot priority to DVD drive, and we're on our merry way. After loading from the disc, I first try jumping into the "Repair your computer" section. That opens up the System Recovery Options. However, this is where the problem comes into play. I don't see any operating systems here. Nada. What's odd though is if I click on the Load Drivers button, I can see my Windows 7 partition (C:), and can go through the files and folders without issue. What do I do at this point? I can't repair it. It seems like I can traverse the hard drive without issue when in an open dialog in the System Recovery Options, but I'm getting the good ole "Error loading computer" on bootup. Suggestions? Thanks all!!

    have installed VS 2003 in my XP VM, which was shared from a remote drive, after installing, when I tried to open new windows application, the IDE freezes, I have tried it many times, repairing, uninstalling .net 1.1 and VS 2003 and again install, mapping the share drive to my local, etc., After all these trials I was left with no option I know...     I have a USB flash drive that I dedicated to ReadyBoost on my Windows 7 PC. Whenever I reboot my machine, it "forgets" that the USB drive is configured for ReadyBoost. What could be the reason for this? Google reveals that there are several people with the same issue, but I have not found a conclusive answer so far.

  • Why do my files fail checksums when transferring to esata dive but not when transfered off the external?

    I have been using teracopy to verify and the large movie files show artifacting after transfer and fail checksum, small files do not fail, only large files seem to. When I transfer files off the external hard drive no such failure of checksums occur on any of the files, could this be a bad cable, or maybe a bad external interface or esata interface on my computer, I have tried two interfaces for esata, one with a pci card the other on the motherboard, both with similar results, so what maybe the reason if a bad hard drive or external case maybe the problem?

  • FAT32: setting a mixed-case volume label on Windows?

    When I try to set the volume label for my FAT32 USB drive the normal way (using Windows Explorer or Disk Management), the filesystem just makes the label uppercase when applying it. Is it possible at all to set a mixed-case volume label on the drive on Windows? I know there may be no real reason for me to do that, but I'd really like to know.

    So. I tried partition my disk using Disk Utility for loading the operating system in the partition drive and installing it. But partition failed, and I could not do that. I tried Remote OSX install from another computer, my MBA crashes with error Hold Power Button to shutdown I dont have a super drive or 8 gigs hard disk.   • How could I let Skydrive desktop sync to MicroSD in Windows 8 tablet?

    I have a Samsung Slate 7 tablet with (now) Windows 8 on it. This machine has a 64 Gb SSD and I have a 64 Gb MicroSD card in it. I also have a Skydrive on my main Microsoft ID that contains about 45 Gb of content. With Windows and some development stuff installed, my Skydrive will not fit on the main drive of the tablet. (Besides, my idea was to keep data on the memory card anyway, to make it easier to repave the machine without data loss if need be.) My problem should now be clear: I want to install the Skydrive desktop app to sync my Skydrive to the MicroSD card. This is not possible, as Skydrive does not allow syncing files to removable drives. I have tried a number of things already, but none of them worked: Use the mklink command line tool to create a directory link/junction from a folder name on SSD to a folder on the MicroSD and then try to install Skydrive sync to the SSD link folder. Skydrive however still recognizes this as something it does not want to sync onto. The various different filter drivers mentioned on Agnipulse (including the Hitachi one) that should make windows see some or all of the removable drives in the system as fixed drives do not seem work on (64-bit) Windows 8: they either can't be installed, do nothing and/or cause Windows 8 to go into Automatic Repair mode when rebooting. The Lexar BootIt app seems to be meant to flip the relevant bit in the on-board drive controller of supported USB pen drives, but I tried it anyway. Of course it did nothing to how the MicroSD card was seen. I have now run out of ideas, it seems, and I was wondering if anyone here has a solution to let Windows 8 see the MicroSD memory card in my tablet as a fixed drive instead of removable drive, or some other way of getting the Skydrive desktop to sync my Skydrive data to that MicroSD card. And to be complete: this is not a duplicate question of this or this as those ask about getting USB drives multiple partitions to work on Windows XP. This question is specific about getting desktop Skydrive to sync to MicroSD card in Windows 8, which seems to be a question I have not seen on superuser so far.

    I have recently discovered Digital Ocean and I have found it to be a relatively nice experience for small staging servers, and the thought occurred to me, why am I paying $267~ for a server on Rackspace (40GB RAM, 160 GB Drive, 2 vCPUs, 400 Mb/s) when Digital Ocean offers a server for $40 (40 GB RAM, 60GB Drive [storage is not a concern of mine], 2 vCPUs, ?Mb/s)? Does Rackspace offer some kind of obvious advantages in Transfer speed/bandwidth? My applications are small startups that for the immediate future will only have about 200-300 concurrent users at once.

I successfully changed the firefox cache by opening about:config and then created a new string key "browser.cache.disk.parent_directory" where I put the value of the new cache location. But it doesn't work with online streaming contents such as youtube videos. Please guide me where does it get stored and how to change its cache into another drive.

  • Setup access to SAS RAID drives with NTFS partitions on CentOS Machine

    We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 system with Adaptec 39320A SCSI CONTROLLER CARD and 4 SAS hard drives attached, with NTFS partitions on them. We installed CentOS on the other raid array with a different controller and it is working fine. We are now trying to access the drives shown above and they are not being shown in /dev as sdb, etc. sda is the drive that we installed centos on and it has sda1, sda2, sda3, etc. The CDROM has been picked up as well. If I scan for scsi devices then the perc and adaptec controllers are both found. sg0 is the CDROM and sg2 is the centos installed, however I think sg1 is the other drive but I cannot see anyway to mount the partitions, as only the drive is listed in /dev.   • How do you access timemachine backups of a different computer?

However, my old backup isn't showing when you browse the time machine network drive, only the currently used machine is listed (I know there are 3 different backups). How can I access those files not belonging to the currently used laptop?
