  • What's an elegant way to conditionally add a class to an HTML element in a view?

    I occasionally have to add a class to an html element based on a condition. The problem is I can't figure out a clean way of doing it. Here's an example of the stuff I've tried: <div <%= if @status = 'success'; "class='ok'"; end %>> some message here </div> OR <% if @status == 'success' %> <div class='success'> <% else %> <div> <% end %> some message here </div> I don't like the first approach because it's crowded looking and hard to read. I don't like the second approach because the nesting is screwed up. It'd be nice to put it in the model, (something like @status.css_class), but that doesn't belong there. What do most people do?

  • Adding STI to Existing Table...

    I want to add STI to an existing table using a custom type column. Let's call this taste_type whose corresponding model is Fruit. In the Fruit model I have: set_inheritance_column :taste_type In my migration to add STI I have: class AddSTI < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :fruits, :taste_type, :string, :limit => 100, :null => false Fruit.reset_column_information Fruit.find_by_id(1).update_attributes({:taste_type => 'Sour'}) end def self.down remove_column :fruits, :taste_type end end When I run the migration, I get the following error: Mysql::Error: Column 'taste_type' cannot be null: ... Any idea what's going? I can get the migration to run if I comment the set_inheritance_column in the Fruit model, then uncomment it after I run the migration. Obviously, I don't want to do this, however.

  • Updating multiple divs w/ RJS/AJAX

    I am successfully using RJS to implement AJAX on a page.replace.html create.js.rjs. I am attempting to update two locations instead of one and after watching Ryan Bates Railscast I am very close (I think) but have a problem in the syntax of my /views/likes/create.js.rjs file. Here is the situation: located at /views/likes/create.js.rjs is the following code: page.replace_html "votes_#{ @site.id }", :partial => @like page.replace_html "counter", 10 - (@question.likes.count :conditions => {:user_id => current_user.id}) page[@like].visual_effect :highlight My problem lies in the second line. The div "counter" displays the following code in the /views/question/show.html.erb page: <div id="counter"> You have <%= 10 - (@question.likes.count :conditions => {:user_id => current_user.id}) %> votes remaining for this question </div> From watching the screen cast I believe that my error has to do w/ the syntax of the second line. Specifically he mentions that you cannot use a local instance variable but not sure how to make the change. Thoughts?

  • Passing hash as values in hidden_field_tag

    I am trying to pass some filters in my params through a form like so: hidden_field_tag "filters", params[:filters] For some reason the params get changed in the next page. For example, if params[:filters] used to be... "filters"={"name_like_any"=["apple"]} [1] ...it gets changed to... "filters"="{\"name_like_any\"=[\"apple\"]}" [2] note the extra quotations and backslashes in [2] when compared to [1]. Any ideas? I'm attempting to use this with searchlogic for some filtering, but I need it to persist when I change change objects in forms. I would prefer not to have to store it in session.

  • Workling not running tasks in background

    Hi, I followed the railscast that describes how to get workling running background tasks, but can't get it working. The task runs, but not in the background (it's taking 5 secs before I'm redirected to admin_path). Here is what my code looks like: class AdminWorker < Workling::Base   def test_workling(options)     sleep 5   end end class AdminController < ApplicationController   def test_workling     AdminWorker.async_test_workling     flash[:notice] = "Doing stuff in the background"     redirect_to admin_path   end end What am I doing wrong?     Lets say I have three models/tables: operating_systems, words, and programming_languages: # operating_systems name:string created_by:string family:string Windows Microsoft MS-DOS Mac OS X Apple UNIX Linux Linus Torvalds UNIX UNIX AT&T UNIX # words word:string defenitions:string window (serialized hash of defenitions) hello (serialized hash of defenitions) UNIX (serialized hash of defenitions) # programming_languages name:string created_by:string example_code:text C++ Bjarne Stroustrup #include <iostream> etc... HelloWorld Jeff Skeet h AnotherOne Jon Atwood imports 'SORULEZ.cs' etc... When a user searches hello, the system shows the defenitions of 'hello'. This is relatively easy to implement. However, when a user searches UNIX, the engine must choose: word or operating_system. Also, when a user searches windows (small letter 'w'), the engine chooses word, but should also show Assuming 'windows' is a word. Use as an <a href="etc..">operating system</a> instead. Can anyone point me in the right direction with parsing and choosing the topic of the search query? Thanks. Note: it doesn't need to be able to perform calculations as WA can do.

  • Monkeypatch a model in a rake task to use a method provided by a plugin?

    During some recent refactoring we changed how our user avatars are stored not realizing that once deployed it would affect all the existing users. So now I'm trying to write a rake task to fix this by doing something like this. namespace :fix do desc "Create associated ImageAttachment using data in the Users photo fields" task :user_avatars => :environment do class User # Paperclip has_attached_file :photo ... <paperclip stuff, styles etc> end User.all.each do |user| i = ImageAttachment.new i.photo_url = user.photo.url user.image_attachments << i end end end When I try running that though I'm getting undefined method `has_attached_file' for User:Class I'm able to do this in script/console but it seems like it can't find the paperclip plugin's methods from a rake task.

  • Processing incoming emails on Heroku

    For my side project kwiqi, I use ActionMailer's 'receive' method to process incoming email messages for tracking my expenses. Heroku doesn't have a local mail server running that same code will not work. One solution I've thought of is to periodically hit a controller action that will pull messages from Gmail. Are there other solutions that are reasonable? Is anyone processing incoming emails in Heroku?

  • aws-s3 can't find xml-simple, but in gem list

    I'm transitioning to heroku, and need to have AWS-s3 connections to deal with a variety of graphics. I've installed the aws-s3 gem, but one of its dependencies is not being found: xml-simple. My belief is that this is a standard part of RoR, and it is in the gem list. When I deploy to heroku, all is fine, but on my development server, it isn't being found when the code uses it to check the existence of a graphic. It works fine from the console, using s3sh. I'm not quite sure why this is -- what do I need to check? Using OS X 10.6, on a 64 bit machine -- can this be part of it?

    A new web application may require adding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the future, e.g. using ProLog. I know it can be done from a Java environment, but I am wondering about the opportunities with modern web languages like Ruby or Python. The latter is considered to be "more scientific" (at least used in that environment), but using Google there seems to be a preliminary ProLog implementation for both. Any suggestions on modern (open source) web languages (like Python or Ruby) in combination with AI?

    I'm getting an error when I run the Spree sample data. It occurs when Spree tries to load in the product data, specifically the product images. Here's the error I'm getting: * Execute db:load_file loading ruby <GEM DIR>/sample/lib/tasks/../../db/sample/spree/products.rb -- Processing image: ror_tote.jpeg rake aborted! /var/folders/91/63kgbtds2czgp0skw3f8190r0000gn/T/ror_tote.jpeg20121007-21549-2rktq1 is not recognized by the 'identify' command. <GEM DIR>/paperclip-2.7.1/lib/paperclip/geometry.rb:31:in `from_file' <GEM DIR>/spree/core/app/models/spree/image.rb:35:in `find_dimensions' I've made sure ImageMagick is installed correctly, as previously I was having problems with it. Removing the additional digits (is this a timestamp?) after the file extension and running the Paperclip.run command manually in Pry gives me a different error: Cocaine::ExitStatusError: Command 'identify -format %wx%h :file' returned 1. Expected 0 I've also tried manually updating the Paperclip gem in Spree to 3.0.2 and still get the same error. So, I'm not really sure what else to try. Is there still something incorrect with my ImageMagick setup?

    I've got a model like this: Stem -id -etc And then I have Stemrelation -stem_id -related_stem_id -active I can get the related stems with the following relations class Stem < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :stemrelations has_many :related_stems, :through => :stemrelations end class Stemrelation < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :stem belongs_to :related_stem, :class_name => "Stem", :foreign_key => "related_stem_id" end But now I'd only like to get the active relations. I tried adding this to the Stem model: has_many :active_related, :through => :stemrelations, :source => :related_stem, :conditions => {:active => true} but this gives me an error becasue it tries to check the active flag on the stem model instead of the stemrelation. What do I change here? Thanks!

(in /home/myusername/approotlocation) my custom rake file within lib/tasks is as follows: task :sendnewsletter => :environment do require 'rubygems' require 'chronic' require 'whenever' require 'searchlogic' require 'adzap-ar_mailer' require 'twitter' require 'gdata' require 'bitly' require 'ruby-recaptcha' @recipients = Subscription.all(:conditions => {:active => true}) for user in @recipients Email.send_later(:deliver_send_newsletter,user) end end with or without the require items, it still gives me the same error ... can anyone shed some light on this? or alternatively advise me on how to make a custom file within the script directory that will run this function (I already have a cron job working that will run and process all my delayed_jobs.
