  • How to cache pages using background jobs ?

    - by Alexandre
Definitions: resource = collection of database records, regeneration = processing these records and outputting the corresponding html Current flow: Receive client request Check for resource in cache If not in cache or cache expired, regenerate Return result The problem is that the regeneration step can tie up a single server process for 10-15 seconds. If a couple of users request the same resource, that could result in a couple of processes regenerating the exact same resource simultaneously, each taking up 10-15 seconds. Wouldn't it be preferrable to have the frontend signal some background process saying "Hey, regenerate this resource for me". But then what would it display to the user? "Rebuilding" is not acceptable. All resources would have to be in cache ahead of time. This could be a problem as the database would almost be duplicated on the filesystem (too big to fit in memory). Is there a way to avoid this? Not ideal, but it seems like the only way out. But then there's one more problem. How to keep the same two processes from requesting the regeneration of a resource at the same time? The background process could be regenerating the resource when a frontend asks for the regeneration of the same resource. I'm using PHP and the Zend Framework just in case someone wants to offer a platform-specific solution. Not that it matters though - I think this problem applies to any language/framework. Thanks!

  • How do I debug this javascript -- I don't get an error in Firebug but it's not working as expected.

    - by Angela
    I installed the plugin better-edit-in-place (http://github.com/nakajima/better-edit-in-place) but I dont' seem to be able to make it work. The plugin creates javascript, and also automatically creates a rel and class. The expected behavior is to make an edit-in-place, but it currently is not. Nothing happens when I mouse over. When I use firebug, it is rendering the value to be edited correctly: <span rel="/emails/1" id="email_1_days" class="editable">7</span> And it is showing the full javascript which should work on class editable. I didn't copy everything, just the chunks that seemed should be operationable if I have a class name in the DOM. // Editable: Better in-place-editing // http://github.com/nakajima/nakatype/wikis/better-edit-in-place-editable-js var Editable = Class.create({ initialize: function(element, options) { this.element = $(element); Object.extend(this, options); // Set default values for options this.editField = this.editField || {}; this.editField.type = this.editField.type || 'input'; this.onLoading = this.onLoading || Prototype.emptyFunction; this.onComplete = this.onComplete || Prototype.emptyFunction; this.field = this.parseField(); this.value = this.element.innerHTML; this.setupForm(); this.setupBehaviors(); }, // In order to parse the field correctly, it's necessary that the element // you want to edit in place for have an id of (model_name)_(id)_(field_name). // For example, if you want to edit the "caption" field in a "Photo" model, // your id should be something like "photo_#{@photo.id}_caption". // If you want to edit the "comment_body" field in a "MemberBlogPost" model, // it would be: "member_blog_post_#{@member_blog_post.id}_comment_body" parseField: function() { var matches = this.element.id.match(/(.*)_\d*_(.*)/); this.modelName = matches[1]; this.fieldName = matches[2]; if (this.editField.foreignKey) this.fieldName += '_id'; return this.modelName + '[' + this.fieldName + ']'; }, // Create the editing form for the editable and inserts it after the element. // If window._token is defined, then we add a hidden element that contains the // authenticity_token for the AJAX request. setupForm: function() { this.editForm = new Element('form', { 'action': this.element.readAttribute('rel'), 'style':'display:none', 'class':'in-place-editor' }); this.setupInputElement(); if (this.editField.tag != 'select') { this.saveInput = new Element('input', { type:'submit', value: Editable.options.saveText }); if (this.submitButtonClass) this.saveInput.addClassName(this.submitButtonClass); this.cancelLink = new Element('a', { href:'#' }).update(Editable.options.cancelText); if (this.cancelButtonClass) this.cancelLink.addClassName(this.cancelButtonClass); } var methodInput = new Element('input', { type:'hidden', value:'put', name:'_method' }); if (typeof(window._token) != 'undefined') { this.editForm.insert(new Element('input', { type: 'hidden', value: window._token, name: 'authenticity_token' })); } this.editForm.insert(this.editField.element); if (this.editField.type != 'select') { this.editForm.insert(this.saveInput); this.editForm.insert(this.cancelLink); } this.editForm.insert(methodInput); this.element.insert({ after: this.editForm }); }, // Create input element - text input, text area or select box. setupInputElement: function() { this.editField.element = new Element(this.editField.type, { 'name':this.field, 'id':('edit_' + this.element.id) }); if(this.editField['class']) this.editField.element.addClassName(this.editField['class']); if(this.editField.type == 'select') { // Create options var options = this.editField.options.map(function(option) { return new Option(option[0], option[1]); }); // And assign them to select element options.each(function(option, index) { this.editField.element.options[index] = options[index]; }.bind(this)); // Set selected option try { this.editField.element.selectedIndex = $A(this.editField.element.options).find(function(option) { return option.text == this.element.innerHTML; }.bind(this)).index; } catch(e) { this.editField.element.selectedIndex = 0; } // Set event handlers to automaticall submit form when option is changed this.editField.element.observe('blur', this.cancel.bind(this)); this.editField.element.observe('change', this.save.bind(this)); } else { // Copy value of the element to the input this.editField.element.value = this.element.innerHTML; } }, // Sets up event handles for editable. setupBehaviors: function() { this.element.observe('click', this.edit.bindAsEventListener(this)); if (this.saveInput) this.editForm.observe('submit', this.save.bindAsEventListener(this)); if (this.cancelLink) this.cancelLink.observe('click', this.cancel.bindAsEventListener(this)); }, // Event Handler that activates form and hides element. edit: function(event) { this.element.hide(); this.editForm.show(); this.editField.element.activate ?   • RoR: Replace_html with partial and collection not functioning

    - by Jack
I am trying to create a tabbed interface using the prototype helper method "replace_html." I have three different partials I am working with. The first one is the 'main tab' and it is loaded automatically like so: <div id = "grid"> <% things_today = things.find_things_today %> <%= render :partial => "/todaything", :collection => things_today, :as =>:thing %> </div> ...which works fine. Similarly, I have a _tomorrowthing partial which would replace the content in the 'grid' div like so: <%things_tomorrow = things.find_things_tomorrow%> <%= link_to_function('Tomorrow',nil, :id=>'tab') do |page| page.replace_html 'grid' , :partial => '/tomorrowthing',:collection => things_tomorrow, :as => :thing end %> If I click on this tab nothing happens at all. Using firebug, the only errors I find are a missing ) after argument list which is contained in the Element.update block where the link_to_function is called. What am I doing wrong?

  • Undefined method `add' on a cucumber step that usually works.

    - by Josiah Kiehl
I have a path defined: when /the admin home\s?page/ "/admin/" I have scenario that is passing: Scenario: Let admins see the admin homepage Given "pojo" is logged in And "pojo" is an "admin" And I am on the admin home page Then I should see "Hi there." And I have a scenario that is failing: Scenario: Review flagged photo Given "pojo" is logged in And "pojo" is an "admin" ...bunch of steps that create stuff in the database... And I am on the admin home page Then ... the rest of the steps The step that fails in the second one is "And I am on the admin home page" which passes just fine in the first scenario. Here's the error I get: And I am on the admin home page # features/step_definitions/web_steps.rb:18 undefined method `add' for {}:Hash (NoMethodError) ./app/controllers/admin_controller.rb:13:in `index' ./app/controllers/admin_controller.rb:11:in `each' ./app/controllers/admin_controller.rb:11:in `index' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/benchmark.rb:308:in `realtime' ./features/step_definitions/web_steps.rb:19:in `/^(?:|I )am on (.+)$/' features/admin.feature:52:in `And I am on the admin home page' This is very odd... why would it be fine in the first case, and not in the second where the only difference are a bunch of steps that create records in the db? [edit] Here's the add stuff to database step: Given /^there is a "([^\"]*)" with the following:$/ do |model, table| model.constantize.create!(table.rows_hash) end

  • Eclipse users: Do you use Aptana too?

    - by Glenn
This San Mateo development company makes a freely downloadable convenient packaging of many plugins for Eclipse called Aptana. I was recently in an environment where Aptana came pre-installed. Not only is it a good IDE for RoR, it also does a somewhat decent job (sans debugging) for PHP, Python, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. According to their own web site, their IDE also supports Adobe Air and the iPhone. If you are currently using Eclipse, then do you also use Aptana too? What, if any, are the drawbacks to using Aptana?

  • has_one and has_many associations: which side of the association is saved first

    - by SeeBees
I have three simplified models: class Team < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :players has_one :coach end class Player < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team validates_presence_of :team_id end class Coach < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team validates_presence_of :team_id end I use the following code to test these models: t = Team.new team.coach = Coach.new team.save! team.save! returns true. But in another test: t = Team.new team.players << Player.new team.save! team.save! gives the following error: > ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: > Validation failed: Players is invalid > from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/validations.rb:1090:in > `save_without_dirty!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/dirty.rb:87:in `save_without_transactions!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:200:in > `save!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/connection_adapters/abstract/database_statements.rb:136:in > `transaction' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:182:in > `transaction' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:200:in > `save!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:208:in > `rollback_active_record_state!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:200:in > `save!' from (irb):14 I figured out when team.save! is called, it first calls player.save!. player needs to validate the presence of the id of the associated team. But at the time player.save! is called, team hasn't been saved yet, and therefore, team_id doesn't yet exist for player. This fails the player's validation, so the error occurs. But on the other hand, team is saved before coach.save!, otherwise the first example will get the same error as the second. So I've concluded that when a has_many bs, a.save! will save bs prior to a. When a has_one b, a.save! will save a prior to b. If I am right, why is this the case? It doesn't seem logical to me. Why has_one and has_many association have different order in saving? Any ideas? Thanks.

  • ActiveRecord Save Dependent Model

    - by Dmitriy Likhten
I am trying to save a model with it's dependency models being saved. Model1 has_many :model2, :autosave => true Model2 belongs_to :model1 has_many :model3, :autosave => true Model3 belongs_to :model2 I want to save Model1, and have Model2 and 3 save as well. I tried this without and with the autosave feature. What winds up happening is Model1 is saved, Model2 is saved, Model3 is untouched. Is there a way to tell ActiveRecord that for this save I want to save the model and all child models all at once? As a side note, all 3 are just created and are not in the database. I cannot do .create on the models because I cannot save them until all validation passes and all business logic succeeds (has to be a transaction).

  • How do I change the zone offset for a time in ruby?

    - by Janak
I have a variable foo that contains a time, lets say 4pm today, but the zone offset is wrong, i.e. it is in the wrong time zone. How do I change the time zone? When I print it I get Fri Jun 26 07:00:00 UTC 2009 So there is no offset, and I would like to set the offset to -4 or Eastern Standard Time. I would expect to be able to just set the offset as a property of the Time object, but that doesn't seem to be available?

  • Why would Ruby fail equality on 2 floats that appear the same?

    - by btelles
Hi there, I have a calculation that generates what appears to be the Float 22.23, and a literal 22.23 like so: some_object.total => 22.23 some_object.total.class => Float 22.23 => 22.23 22.23.class => Float But for some reason, the following is false: some_object.total == 22.23 ? true : false Wacky, right? Is there some kind of precision mechanism being used that maybe isn't completely transparent through the some_object.total call?

  • Rendering a variable with erb.

    - by TZer0
I've got the following problem: I have rhtml (html minced together with ruby inside <% % and <%= % tags) stored in a database which I want to render. The information is acquired through a query. I need to be able to evaluate the information I get from the database as though as it was normal content inside the .erb-file. What I currently have: <% @mymods.each do |mod| %> <%= render_text(mod["html"])%> <% end %> Where mod["html"] is the variable containing the rhtml-code and @mymods an array of objects from the query. I have currently no idea what function I should use (render_text does, of course, not work). Help is greatly appreciated. /TZer0

  • How do I do a grouping by year?

    - by kibyegn
I have a books model with a date type column named publish_date. On my views I'm iterating through the books and I want to group the books by year such that I have a heading for every year and books that were published on that year to be listed below the year heading. So by starting with "2010" all books published on 2010 would be listed, then another heading "2009" with all books published in 2009 listed below it and so forth. <% @all_books.each do |book| %> <%=link_to book.title + ", (PDF, " + get_file_size(book.size) + ")" %> <% end %> By doing a book.publish_date.strftime("%Y") I am able to get the year but I do not know how to group the entries by year. Any help on this would be appreciated.

  • Ruby hpricot does not like dash in symbol, is there a workaround?

    - by eakkas
I am trying to parse an xml file with hpricot. The xml element that I am trying to get has a dash though and hence the issue that I am facing xml <xliff xmlns="urn:oasis:names:tc:xliff:document:1.1" version="1.1"> <trans-unit> <source>"%0" can not be found. Please try again.</source> <target>"%0" can not be found. Please try again.</target> </trans-unit> </xliff> rb def read_in_xliff(xlf_file_name) stream = open(xlf_file_name) {|f| Hpricot(f)} (stream/:xliff/:'trans-unit').each do |transunit| .......... This does not work because of the dash. If I rename the tag to transunit and edit the symbol reference accordingly everything seems to be fine. I thought using the symbol between quotes should work but hpricot does not seem to like this. Can anyone think of a workaround? Thanks in advance

  • Ajax, Multiple Attachments and Paperclip question.

    - by dustmoo
Alright everyone this is a bit of a complicated setup so if I need to clarify the question just let me know. I have a model: class IconSet < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :icon_graphics end This Model has many icongraphics: class IconGraphic < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :icon_set has_attached_file :icon has_attached_file :flagged end As you can see, IconGraphic has two attached files, basically two different versions of the icon that I want to load. Now, this setup is working okay if I edit the icongraphic's individually, however, for ease of use, I have all the icon graphics editable under the IconSet. When you edit the icon set the form loads a partial for the icongraphics: <% form_for @icon_set, :html => {:class => 'nice', :multipart => true} do |f| %> <fieldset> <%= f.error_messages %> <p> <%= f.label :name %> <%= f.text_field :name, :class => "text_input" %> </p> <!-- Loaded Partial for icongraphics --> <div id="icon_graphics"> <%= render :partial => 'icon_graphic', :collection => @icon_set.icon_graphics %> </div> <div class="add_link"> <%= link_to_function "Add an Icon" do |page| page.insert_html :bottom, :icon_graphics, :partial => 'icon_graphic', :object => IconGraphic.new end %> </div> <p><%= f.submit "Submit" %></p> </fieldset> <% end %> This is based largely off of Ryan's Complex Forms Railscast. The partial loads the file_field forms: <div class="icon_graphic"> <% fields_for "icon_set[icon_graphic_attributes][]", icon_graphic do |icon_form|-%> <%- if icon_graphic.new_record? -%> <strong>Upload Icon: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :icon, :index => nil %><br/> <strong>Upload Flagged Icon: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <%= link_to_function image_tag('remove_16.png'), "this.up('.icon_graphic').remove()"%><br/> <% else -%> <%= image_tag icon_graphic.icon.url %><br/> <strong>Replace <%= icon_graphic.icon_file_name %>: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :icon, :index => nil %><br /> <% if icon_graphic.flagged_file_name.blank? -%> <strong>Upload Flagged Icon: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <% else -%> <strong>Replace <%= icon_graphic.flagged_file_name %>: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <% end -%> <%= link_to_function image_tag('remove_16.png'), "mark_for_destroy(this, '.icon_graphic')"%><br/> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :id, :index => nil %> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :icon, :index => nil %> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :should_destroy, :index => nil, :class => 'should_destroy' %> <br/><br/> <%- end -%> <% end -%> </div> Now, this is looking fine when I add new icons, and fill both fields. However, if I edit the IconSet after the fact, and perhaps try to replace the icon with a new one, or if I uploaded only one of the set and try to add the second attachment, paperclip doesn't put the attachments with the right IconGraphic Model. It seems that even though I have the IconGraphic ID in each partial, <%= icon_form.hidden_field :id, :index => nil %> it seems that paperclip either creates a new IconGraphic or attaches it to the wrong one. This all happens when you save the IconSet, which is setup to save the IconGraphic attributes. I know this is complicated.. I may just have to go to editing each icon individually, but if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

  • Ruby / rubyzip alternative capable of handling rar/tar/zip/7z?

    - by Nick Gorbikoff
I was wondering if anyone knows of rubyzip alternatives for Ruby, that can handle various formats in particular zip / rar / 7z? I know of libarchive, but it's not complete for my purposes ( it's a good gem thou). (To clarify, libarchive - won't work for me - cause I need to be able to run in on Windows. ( Yeah I know sucks to be me)) Right now I end up running system commands to the os, but I'd like something OS independent, and capable of handling those formats - reading and writing. Thank you

I just started using RJS which is awesome however I am used to putting visual effects in the link_to_remote and such and I'm not sure how to trigger actions before and after remotes are triggered. Take this link for example: HTML <span id="<%= "edit_comment_link_#{comment.id.to_s}"%>" style="float:left;"> <%= link_to_remote "edit", {:update => "comment_#{comment.id.to_s}", :url => edit_post_comment_path(comment.post, comment), :method => :get}%> | </span> Controller: def edit @comment = Comment.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| #format.html render edit_comment_path(@comment) format.js end end RJS: page.replace_html "edit_comment_link_#{@comment.id.to_s}", "currently editing | " So is RJS mainly for after actions are rendered visual effects such as a spinner should be put into the link_to_remote with call_backs? Is this a good way of doing things?

  • Deleting a resource in a Cucumber (Capybara) step doesn't work

    - by Josiah Kiehl
    Here is my Scenario: Scenario: Delete a match Given pojo is logged in And there is a match with the following: | game_id | 1 | | name | Game del Pojo | | date_and_time | 2010-02-23 17:52:00 | | players | 2 | | teams | 2 | | comment | This is an awesome comment | | user_id | 1 | And I am on the show match 1 page And show me the page When I follow "Delete" And I follow "Yes, delete it" Then there should not be a match with the following: | game_id | 1 | | name | Game del Pojo | | date_and_time | 2010-02-23 17:52:00 | | players | 2 | | teams | 2 | | comment | This is an awesome comment | | user_id | 1 | If I walk through these steps manually, they work. When I click the confirmation: Yes, delete it, then the match is deleted. Cucumber, however, fails to delete the record and the last step fails. And I follow "Yes, delete it" # features/step_definitions/web_steps.rb:32 Then there should not be a match with the following: # features/step_definitions/match_steps.rb:8 | game_id | 1 | | name | Game del Pojo | | date_and_time | 2010-02-23 17:52:00 | | players | 2 | | teams | 2 | | comment | This is an awesome comment | | user_id | 1 | <nil> expected but was <#<Match id: 1, name: "Game del Pojo", date_and_time: "2010-02-23 17:52:00", teams: 2, created_at: "2010-03-02 23:06:33", updated_at: "2010-03-02 23:06:33", comment: "This is an awesome comment", players: 2, game_id: 1, user_id: 1>>.
