• How to avoid wasting time during compilation during development?

  Hello, I'm working with a small team of developers. My job is to convert a Make project (with Intellij Idea 9.0) into a Maven 2 project. The problem is : we spend a lot of time during the development. With Make, only one complete build was required and then any change did not consume a lot of time (almost instantaneously). On the other hand, with Maven 2, a little change takes a lot of time to run. Any solution ? Thanks.

• How can I delete a file in Sinatra after it has been sent via send_file?

  I have a simple sinatra application that needs to generate a file (via an external process), send that file to the browser, and finally, delete the file from the filesystem. Something along these lines: class MyApp < Sinatra::Base get '/generate-file' do # calls out to an external process, # and returns the path to the generated file file_path = generate_the_file() # send the file to the browser send_file(file_path) # remove the generated file, so we don't # completely fill up the filesystem. File.delete(file_path) # File.delete is never called. end end It seems, however, that the send_file call completes the request, and any code after it does not get run. Is there some way to ensure that the generated file is cleaned up after it has been successfully sent to the browser? Or will I need to resort to a cron job running a cleanup script on some interval?

• Java ThreadPool for multiple identical tasks

  I have 1 thread who sole job is to grab DatagramPackets off of a socket and stick them in a buffer. Another thread works out of that buffer, processing the DatagramPackets. I'd like to have a pool of threads working out of that buffer. I had thought to use a fixed thread pool to do this. To do so, do I need to create the pool, then submit enough runnables for execution to fill it up? I had hoped for a way to say "this is the thread/runnable that I want you to execute, this is how many I want running, GO!". Is there such a method of doing this? Is something other than a fixed thread pool better suited?

• Selecting a sequence NEXTVAL for multiple rows

  I am building a SQL Server job to pull data from SQL Server into an Oracle database through a linked server. The table I need to populate has a sequence for the name ID, which is my primary key. I'm having trouble figuring out a way to do this simply, without some lengthy code. Here's what I have so far for the SELECT portion (some actual names obfuscated): SELECT (SELECT NEXTVAL FROM OPENQUERY(MYSERVER, 'SELECT ORCL.NAME_SEQNO.NEXTVAL FROM DUAL')), psn.BirthDate, psn.FirstName, psn.MiddleName, psn.LastName, c.REGION_CODE FROM Person psn LEFT JOIN MYSERVER..ORCL.COUNTRY c ON c.COUNTRY_CODE = psn.Country MYSERVER is the linked Oracle server, ORCL is obviously the schema. Person is a local table on the SQL Server database where the query is being executed. When I run this query, I get the same exact value for all records for the NEXTVAL. What I need is for it to generate a new value for each returned record.   i would like to automate the rsync task as a cron job.. since it needs the passphrase i am not able to do the cronjob. i need to specify the passphrase along with the rsync command or i will store the passphrase in a file and i will read from it. my command will look like this.. rsync -aPe "ssh -i ' . $server-{'ssh_key'} .   In my environment my Dev and QA Database Instances are on the same server. I would like to deploy the same package (or different versions of the package) into SSIS and set the filter to select different rows in the Config table. Is this possible? This is SQL 2005. For the sake of this question lets say I have one variable, which is a directory path. I would like to have these variables in the table twice (with different Filters applied (Dev and QA) as below (simplified) . . . Filter / Variable Value / Variable Name Dev / c:\data\dev / FilePath QA / c:\data\qa / FilePath Do I need to apply a change within the settings of the package in SSIS or is it changed on the job step within Agent? Any help would be appreciated.

• Writing an installer using codigniter

  I'm just about finished my first release of automailer, a program I've been working on for a while now. I've just got to finish writing the installer. Its job is to rewrite the codigniter configs from templates. I've got the read/write stuff working, but I'd like to be able to test the server credentials given by the user without codingiter throwing a system error if they're wrong. Is there a function other than mysql_connect that I can use to test a connection that will return true or false and won't make codeigniter have a fit?

  G'day, How do you work with someone when they haven't been able to see that there is a range of other languages out there beyond "The One True Path"? I mean someone who hasn't grown up to realise that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. Someone who has a well-equipped toolbox and then selects the best tool for the job at hand. The person who's knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" • Is it possible to make an online registration process for a course in Google Docs with a cap on registrations?

  I am trying to build an online registration form for an institute I intern at that is running a training programme with multiple courses and hundreds of applicants. I've done registration forms with Google Docs Forms before, but the tricky spot this time round is that I'm trying to put a registration cap on each of the courses. Every person needs to register for one course in every timeslot, and there are seven or so timeslots. However, as seating space in every venue is limited, we would like to cap registrations per course (venue) to 200 per course, after which either a) the applicant will be informed that they need to register for another course in that timeslot if they apply to a full course, or b) ideal case scenario, the option will be greyed out. Is this possible using Google Docs Forms at all? If not, is there a free alternative that might do the job properly?

  I'm planning to write an application that should handle incoming mails. Basically it will act more like a ticketing system than a webmail, so I'm only interested in receiving emails, and not sending them. I have made a simple prototype that downloads mails and displays the text with downloadable attachments in a web page, but handling mails from Outlook and others is more complicated. I have looked at some of the open source ticketing systems out there, but most of the code is tied to the system and is hard to separate. Is there a library that understands "rich" mail and makes this job simpler? Preferably in Python, Java, Ruby or Perl. I'm also open to suggestions for any command line mail clients that can be used for this, since the system will not receive large amounts of mail and can afford to launch external processes.

  Hi, We're writing a web-based tool to configure our services provided by multiple servers. This includes interfaces configuration, dhcp configs etc. etc. Having configs in database and views that generate proper output, how to send it/make it available for servers? I'm thinking about sending it through scp and invoking reload command to services through ssh. I'm also thinking about using Func to do all the job, as this is Python tool and will seemingly integrate with python-based (django) config tool. Any other proposals?

• Download File from Web C++ (with winsock?)

  I need to download files/read strings from a specified url in C++. I've done some research with this, cURL seems to be the most popular method. Also, I've used it before in PHP. The problem with cURL is that the lib is huge, and my file has to be small. I think you can do it with winsock, but I can't find any simple examples. If you have a simple winsock example, a light cURL/Something else, or anything that could get the job done. I would greatly appreciated. Also, I need this to work with native C++.

• Scraping with multiple IP, in java.

  Well basically I have a scraping application. It scrapes around n items per minute. currently i have only one IP. The site i'm scraping allows me 3 connections per IP. I'm thinking about getting another IP. so i'll be able to get 6 connections. in theory i should be able to get n items in 40 seconds, more or less. currently i'm using java (commons-httpcore) to get the job done. I'm not sure if this is java question or an OS question. my machine has IP 1 and IP 2 how do i connect to, say, www.microsoft.com, using IP 1 and using IP2? how can i specify, which ip i want to use to do a connection?

• Low-overhead way to access the memory space of a traced process?

  Hello all. I'm looking for an efficient way to access(for both read and write operations) the memory space of my ptraced child process. The size of blocks being accessed may vary from several bytes up to several megabytes in size, so using the ptrace call with PTRACE_PEEKDATA and PTRACE_POKEDATA which read only one word at a time and switch context every time they're called seems like a pointless waste of resources. The only one alternative solution I could find, though, was the /proc/<pid>/mem file, but it has long since been made read only. Is there any other (relatively simple) way to do that job? The ideal solution would be to somehow share the address space of my child process with its parent and then use the simple memcpy call to copy data I need in both directions, but I have no clues how to do it and where to begin. Any ideas?

• why number 9 in kill -9 command in unix?

  I understand it's off topic, I couldn't find anywhere online and I was thinking maybe programming gurus in the community might know this. I usually use kill -9 pid to kill the job. I always wondered the origin of 9. I looked it up online, and it says "9 Means KILL signal that is not catchable or ignorable. In other words it would signal process (some running application) to quit immediately" (source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_kill_-9_do_in_unix_in_its_entirety) But, why 9? and what about the other numbers? is there any historical significance or because of the architecture of Unix? • Why is Harvest being purchased at all?

  Does your work environment use Harvest SCM? I've used this now at two different locations and find it appalling. In one situation I wrote a conversion script so I could use CVS locally and then daily import changes to the Harvest system while I was sleeping. The corp was fanatic about using Harvest, despite 80% of the programmers crying for something different. It was needlessly complicated, slow and heavy. It is now a job requirement for me that Harvest is not in use where I work. Has anyone else used Harvest before? What's your experience? As bad as mine? Did you employ other, different workarounds? Why is this product still purchased today?

• Reading a bmp file and inverting it in C

  I have an assignment that deals with reading a bmp file into memory, inverts the pixels, and then saves the inverted image to a new file. From this description it seems fairly easy, however I don't think my professor did a great job in explaining the necessary steps to go about doing so. He taught us about fread and fwrite but there is so much more. Can anyone explain the process in going about this problem (I'm no looking for a direct answer just an explanation).   I have some c++ written package. Linux, gcc. I can modify compilation process (change Makefile, flags, etc.), but can not change C++ source code. One runs the package with different parameters, it does a job and exits. How to count: 1) Number of calls of function with specific name? 2) Number of calls of functions with specific signature? 3) Number of calls of functions where one of the parameters is of specific type i.e. std::string (type is specified by signature)? 4) and extra Number of calls of functions of STL objects, i.e. std::string copy constructor? (I mean count a number of calls during the run. ) I thought to do it with GDB, but I found it very tough to do (1) and have not found how to do (2)-(4) at all. All acceptable answers I will write here for humanity.

• [cli/linux] get plain text from raw emails (not attachments extraction)

  Hi, having a raw email as input (i.e. the text between "DATA" and "." sent by a smtp client) I need to extract the mail content (which I know is always text only) as plain text. This means decoding transfer encoding (if any: could be base64 or quoted-printable), merging mutiparts (if any), and stripping headers. I tried various tools that would do that: mewdecode, uudecode, uudeview... I only managed to get this last one to work, but it won't output anything if the mail is not MIME encoded and it stores its output in an unpredictable (nor forceable) filename, so it's hard to use it in a not-interactive shell script. Since this is a pretty common job (every mail client have to do that), it's weird it's so complicated. Do you have some hints? (Actually, forcing uudeview to output in a certain file would be good enough). Thank you!

Would You use a Dataconnection? I am really confused as to the best way to get this done properly.   I am creating an SDK for a client that includes predefined view controllers. What is the recommended way to package everything (static lib, .xib(s), and .png(s)) for easy use? SDKs that I've used (e.g. Pinch Media) do a good job of just providing a .h and .a file that expose only user accessible functionality and hiding everything else. As I read Apple's documentation, a framework would be ideal but is not permitted on iPhoneOS. Some key requirements: Don't expose source or object internals. Be easy to use & set up. • What exactly is GRASP's Controller about?

  What is the idea behind Grasp's Controller pattern? My current interpretation is that sometimes you want to achieve something that needs to use a couple of classes but none of those classes could or has access to the information needed to do it, so you create a new class that does the job, having references to all the needed classes(this is, could be the information expert). Is this a correct view of what Grasp's Controller is about? Generally when googling or SO'ing controller, I just get results about MVC's (and whatnot) which are topics that I don't understand about, so I'd like answers that don't assume I know ASP.NET's MVC or something :( Thanks

• bash screen title usage (screen -t "something")

  I was working with screen lately and wanted to use the -t option for it. What's the point of the-t option if the title of the screen does not show anywhere like when using -list or within the screen when it's attached? There is a command CTRL-A double-quote(") to see all active screens, and then it shows the title, but that does not really do the job, because I have to have the screen attached already. I want to read out the title BEFORE attaching any screens, to attach the right one in the first place. Is there a method to use -t in a convenient way? Edit: There is one method: "ctrl-a "" and then "ctrl-a {numberofscreen}". I guess that's the best way to use the screen titles?

• Storing SQL in MySQL: Insert as Text?

  Hey all, Working in a team environment, each one of us has put together our own list of SQL statements that we use to help with our day to day job functions. As the case often is, there may be some redundancy with this, and we are often in need of each other's statements. To circumvent this, I'm looking to put together a small app that can be used to store and search for these SQL statements. To begin with, I'm keeping it basic, just storing and searching the statements. This may build out to be the actual execution at some point in the future, but I'm not concerning myself with this at the time. This will be built with PHP and MySQL - Should I store the SQL as text, or is there something that I need to be concerned with?
