• Oracle output: cursor, file, or very long string?

  First, the setup: I have a table in an Oracle10g database with spatial columns. I need to be able to pass in a spatial reference so that I can reproject the geometry into an arbitrary coordinate system. Ultimately, I need to compress the results of this projection to a zip file and make it available for download through a Silverlight project. I would really appreciate ideas as to the best way to accomplish this. In the examples below, the SRID is the Spatial reference ID integer used to convert the geometric points into a new coordinate system. In particular, I can see a couple of possibilities. There are many more, but this is an idea of how I'm thinking: a) Pass SRID to a dynamic view -- perform projection, output a cursor -- send cursor to UTL_COMPRESS -- write output to a file (somehow) -- send URL to Silverlight app b) Use SRID to call Oracle function from Silverlight app -- perform projection, output a string -- build strings into a file -- compress file using SharpZipLib library in .NET -- send bytestream back to Silverlight app I've done the first two steps of b), and the conversion of 100 points took about 7 seconds, which is unacceptably slow. I'm hoping it would be faster doing the processing totally in Oracle. If anyone can see potential problems with either way of doing this, or can suggest a better way, it would be very helpful. I have a requirement, like password validations like • At least one Upper case letter • At least one numeric character • At least one special character such as @, #, $, etc. • At least one Lower case letter • password lenght minimum 6 digits • password cannot be same as user name Can anyone provide me a code for this..? • How should a programmer go about getting started with Flash/Flex/ActionScript?

  What is the shortest path between zero (ie no flash related development software on my computer or information about where to obtain it or get started) to running a "hello world" ActionScript? I'm hoping for an answer that gives step by step instructions about exactly what software is needed to get started, an example of some "hello world" code, and instructions for compiling and running the code. I've spent more time than I think should be necessary researching this question and not found much information. Hopefully this question will be found by programmers like me who want to get started with Flash/Flex/ActionScript (After my morning of researching I still don't even know what terminology to use so I'll just throw it all out there). ActionScript tutorials I've found are focused on programming concepts, ie logic, branching, OOP, etc, and some even have code examples to download, but not a single one I've found explains how to compile and run the code. They all seem to assume you have an IDE standing by but no knowledge of programming, exactly the opposite of the position I'm in. • Puting contact number into field

  I have this code that has one button that let's me choose an entry from contacts, and passes that choesn contact to onActivityResult function. My question is how do I select data of that single contact when all that is passed is an Intent in data variable. That data variable, if converted to string shows something like "dat: content://contacts/people/4" so I see that selected contact is somehow passed, but what now? How to get that data? And also all I found by googling was examples with deprecated class People, so I don't know how too use new classes. Please help. • SEO redirects for removed pages

  Hi, Apologies if SO is not the right place for this, but there are 700+ other SEO questions on here. I'm a senior developer for a travel site with 12k+ pages. We completely redeveloped the site and relaunched in January, and with the volatile nature of travel, there are many pages which are no longer on the site. Examples: /destinations/africa/senegal.aspx /destinations/africa/features.aspx Of course, we have a 404 page in place (and it's a hard 404 page rather than a 30x redirect to a 404). Our SEO advisor has asked us to 30x redirect all our 404 pages (as found in Webmaster Tools), his argument being that 404's are damaging to our pagerank. He'd want us to redirect our Senegal and features pages above to the Africa page (which doesn't contain the content previously found on Senegal.aspx or features.aspx). An equivalent for SO would be taking a url for a removed question and redirecting it to /questions rather than showing a 404 'Question/Page not found'. My argument is that, as these pages are no longer on the site, 404 is the correct status to return. I'd also argue that redirecting these to less relevant pages could damage our SEO (due to duplicate content perhaps)? It's also very time consuming redirecting all 404's when our site takes some content from our in-house system, which adds/removes content at will. Thanks for any advice, Adam

  Does anybody know if it is possible to return an associative array as the result of an Oracle function, if so do you have any examples? I have an Oracle package which contains an associative array declaration as defined below: TYPE EVENTPARAM IS TABLE OF NUMBER INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER; This is then used in a stored procedure outside the package as follows: v_CompParams areva_interface.eventparam; The intention is to store an associative array of strings in the variable v_CompParams, returned from a Parse function in another package. The definition for which is as follows: PACKAGE STRING_MANIP IS TYPE a_array IS TABLE OF NUMBER INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER; FUNCTION Parse (v_string VARCHAR2, v_delim VARCHAR2) RETURN a_array; FUNCTION RowCount(colln IN a_array) RETURN NUMBER; END; The code which implements this is: v_CompParams := STRING_MANIP.PARSE(v_CompID,v_Delim); Unfortunately it doesn't work, I get the error 'PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type'. I foolishly assumed, that since a_array derives from the same source Oracle type as the variable v_CompParams, that there would be no problem casting between them. Any help much appreciated. • Is It Incorrect to Make Domain Objects Aware of The Data Access Layer?

  I am currently working on rewriting an application to use Data Mappers that completely abstract the database from the Domain layer. However, I am now wondering which is the better approach to handling relationships between Domain objects: Call the necessary find() method from the related data mapper directly within the domain object Write the relationship logic into the native data mapper (which is what the examples tend to do in PoEAA) and then call the native data mapper function within the domain object. Either it seems to me that in order to preserve the 'Fat Model, Skinny Controller' mantra, the domain objects have to be aware of the data mappers (whether it be their own or that they have access to the other mappers in the system). Additionally it seems that Option 2 unnecessarily complicates the data access layer as it creates table access logic across multiple data mappers instead of confining it to a single data mapper. So, is it incorrect to make the domain objects aware of the related data mappers and to call data mapper functions directly from the domain objects? Update: These are the only two solutions that I can envision to handle the issue of relations between domain objects. Any example showing a better method would be welcome.

• jQuery multiple themes on one page

  This is driving me NUTS! I've followed the post here which just doesn't seem to be working: http://www.filamentgroup.com/lab/using_multiple_jquery_ui_themes_on_a_single_page/ I have a base theme, for examples sake it's the Smoothness theme from the jQuery UI gallery. Then I have a 'red' theme which basically colours the buttons red. Here is the theme I created. So I go to download my theme. Choose Advanced settings, set the scope to 'red' and my theme folder name to 'red' and download. First of all I'm not entirely 100% sure which folder I'm to copy over to my project is it the 'development-bundle\themes' folder (which contains my red folder) or the '\css\red' folder? I've tried both. The post above seems to suggest if I copy my themes folder and link to my theme in the css it'll work when I add a class of 'red' to a wrapper div or element. So I've linked the themes like so in my file: <link type="text/css" href="themes/base/jquery.ui.all.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <link type="text/css" href="themes/red/jquery.ui.all.css" rel="stylesheet" /> The base theme loads and works all honkey doorey but the red theme doesn't. I've got a button styled like so: <input type="submit" id="btn" value="A submit button" class="red" /> I've also tried: <div class="red"> <input type="submit" id="btn" value="A submit button" /> </div> Neither work. When I remove the 'themes/base/jquery.ui.all.css' css file link the button's aren't styled at all. Crazy! I'm pulling my hair out. Where am I going wrong? Surely they should just make it easy enough to download JUST the theme folder and reference the ui.all file.

  I have a folder with ~10 000 subfolders. Can any linux API or tool watch for any change in any folder below e.g. /SharedRoot or do I have to setup inotify for each folder? (i.e. I loose if I want to do this for 10k+ folders). I guess yes, since I've already seen examples of this inefficient method, for instance http://twistedmatrix.com/trac/browser/trunk/twisted/internet/inotify.py?rev=28866#L345 My problem: I need to keep folders time-sorted with most recently active "project" up top. When a file changes, each folder above that file should update its last-modified timestamp to match the file. Delays are ok. Opening a file (typically MS Excel) and closing again, its file date can jump up and then down again. For this reason I need to wait until after a file is closed, then queue the folder of that file for checking, and only a while later do I go and look for the newest file in its folder, since the filedate of the triggering file could already be back-dated to its original timestamp by Excel or similar programs. Also in case several files from same folder are used/created, it makes sense to buffer timestamping of that folders' parents to at least get a bunch of updates collapsed into one delayed update. I'm looking for a linux solution. Any help towards understanding what's going on would be duly appreciated. This is an area1 where the theory and javadoc seem straightforward, and since there aren't many examples, conceptually left a big gap in me.

  I could do with some pointers, code examples or references that may help me do the following in an msbuild file to help speed up the deployment process.. This scenario involves getting a developers 'local' version onto a 'development' server.. Increment a developers local Web Applications Assembly version number Publish a developers local Web Application files somewhere .rar the publsihed files or folder into the format v[IncrementedAssemblyNumber].rar Copy the .rar to somewhere Backup (.rar) the existing live website folder (located elsewhere) in the format Pre_v[IncrementedAssemblyNumber].rar Move the backed up .rar to a /Backup folder. Overwrite the development web files with the published local web files Should be simple for all those MSBUILD Gurus out there. Like I said, answers or 'Good and applicable' links would be much appreciated. Also i'm thinking of getting one of the MSbuild books. From what I can tell there are 2, possibly 3 contenders. I am not using TFS. Can anyone recommend a book for beginning MSBUILD? Ideally from people that have read more than one book on the subject. Cheers, -- Lee

  I have aggregate functions foo(), foobar(), fredstats(), barneystats() I want to create a domain specific query language (DSQL) above my DB, to facilitate using using a domain language to query the DB. The 'language' comprises of boolean expressions (or more specifically SQL like criteria) which I then 'translate' back into pure (ANSI) SQL and send to the underlying Db.   Hello, I need a good Unicode library for C++. I need Transformations in Unicode sensitive way. For example sort all strings in case insensitive way and get their first characters for index. Convert to upper and to lower various Unicode strings. Split text in reasonable position -- words that would work for Chinese and Japanese as well. Formatting numbers, dates in locale sensitive way (should be thread safe). Transparent support of utf8 (primary internal representation). As far as I know the best library is ICU. However, I can't find normal developer friendly API documentation with examples. Also as far as I see, it is not too friendly with modern C++ design, work with STL and so on. • Who architected / designed C++'s IOStreams, and would it still be considered well-designed by today'

  First off, it may seem that I'm asking for subjective opinions, but that's not what I'm after. I'd love to hear some well-grounded arguments on this topic. In the hope of getting some insight into how a modern streams / serialization framework ought to be designed, I recently got myself a copy of the book Standard C++ IOStreams and Locales by Angelika Langer and Klaus Kreft. I figured that if IOStreams wasn't well-designed, it wouldn't have made it into the C++ standard library in the first place. After having read various parts of this book, I am starting to have doubts if IOStreams can compare to e.g. the STL from an overall architectural point-of-view. Read e.g. this interview with Alexander Stepanov (the STL's "inventor") to learn about some design decisions that went into the STL. What surprises me in particular: It seems to be unknown who was responsible for IOStreams' overall design (I'd love to read some background information about this — does anyone know good resources?); Once you delve beneath the immediate surface of IOStreams, e.g. if you want to extend IOStreams with your own classes, you get to an interface with fairly cryptic and confusing member function names, e.g. getloc/imbue, uflow/underflow, snextc/sbumpc/sgetc/sgetn, pbase/pptr/epptr (and there's probably even worse examples). This makes it so much harder to understand the overall design and how the single parts co-operate. Even the book I mentioned above doesn't help that much (IMHO). Thus my question: If you had to judge by today's software engineering standards (if there actually is any general agreement on these), would C++'s IOStreams still be considered well-designed? (I wouldn't want to improve my software design skills from something that's generally considered outdated.)

• List<object>.RemoveAll - How to create an appropriate Predicate

  This is a bit of noob question - I'm still fairly new to C# and generics and completely new to predicates, delegates and lamda expressions... I have a class 'Enquiries' which contains a generic list of another class called 'Vehicles'. I'm building up the code to add/edit/delete Vehicles from the parent Enquiry. And at the moment, I'm specifically looking at deletions. From what I've read so far, it appears that I can use Vehicles.RemoveAll() to delete an item with a particular VehicleID or all items with a particular EnquiryID. My problem is understanding how to feed .RemoveAll the right predicate - the examples I have seen are too simplistic (or perhaps I am too simplistic given my lack of knowledge of predicates, delegates and lambda expressions). So if I had a List<Of Vehicle> Vehicles where each Vehicle had an EnquiryID, how would I use Vehicles.RemoveAll() to remove all vehicles for a given EnquiryID? I understand there are several approaches to this so I'd be keen to hear the differences between approaches - as much as I need to get something working, this is also a learning exercise. As an supplementary question, is a Generic list the best repository for these objects? My first inclination was towards a Collection, but it appears I am out of date. Certainly Generics seem to be preferred, but I'm curious as to other alternatives. Thanks

• How do I prevent a C# method from executing using an attribute validator?

  I'd like to create an attribute-based validator that goes a few steps beyond what I've seen in examples. It'll basically prevent methods or other functionality from executing. Please be aware that I'm having to use AzMan since I have no availability to Active Directory in this scenario. Here's some pseudo code of what what I'm looking for: // Attribute validator class AttributeUsage is arbitrary at this point and may include other items [AttributeUsage( AttributeTargets.Method | AttributeTargets.Property, AllowMultiple = true, Inherited = true )] public class PermissionsValidatorAttribute : Attribute { public PermissionsValidatorAttribute(PermissionEnumeration permission){...} public bool UserCanCreateAndEdit(){...} public bool UserCanDelete(){...} public bool UserCanUpload(){...} } Here's a sample of a class/member that'll be decorated. The method will not be executed at all if the PermissionValidator.UserCanDelete() doesn't return true from wherever it's executed: public class DoStuffNeedingPermissions { [PermissionValidator(PermissionEnumeration.MustHaveDeletePermission)] public void DeleteSomething(){...} } I know this is a simple, incomplete example. But you should get the gist of what I'm needing. Make the assumption that DeleteSomething() already exists and I'm preferring to NOT modify the code within the method at all. I'm currently looking at things like the Validation Application Block and am messing with custom attribute POC's. But I'd love to hear opinions with code samples from everyone out there. I'm also certainly not opposed to other methods of accomplishing the same thing such as extension methods or whatever may work to accomplish the same thing.   In MVC web development frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Django, and CakePHP, HTTP requests are routed to controllers, which fetch objects which are usually persisted to a backend database store. These objects represent things like users, blog posts, etc., and often contain logic within their methods for permissions, fetching and/or mutating other objects, validation, etc. These frameworks are all very much object oriented. I've been reading up recently on functional programming and it seems to tout tremendous benefits such as testability, conciseness, modularity, etc. However most of the examples I've seen for functional programming implement trivial functionality like quicksort or the fibonnacci sequence, not complex webapps. I've looked at a few 'functional' web frameworks, and they all seem to implement the view and controller just fine, but largely skip over the whole 'model' and 'persistence' part. (I'm talking more about frameworks like Compojure which are supposed to be purely functional, versus something Lift which conveniently seems to use the OO part of Scala for the model -- but correct me if I'm wrong here.) I haven't seen a good explanation of how functional programming can be used to provide the metaphor that OO programming provides, i.e. tables map to objects, and objects can have methods which provide powerful, encapsulated logic such as permissioning and validation. Also the whole concept of using SQL queries to persist data seems to violate the whole 'side effects' concept. Could someone provide an explanation of how the 'model' layer would be implemented in a functionally programmed web framework?

• How can I add the column data type after adding the column headers to my datatable?

  Using the code below (from a console app I've cobbled together), I add seven columns to my datatable. Once this is done, how can I set the data type for each column? For instance, column 1 of the datatable will have the header "ItemNum" and I want to set it to be an Int. I've looked at some examples on thet 'net, but most all of them show creating the column header and column data type at once, like this: loadDT.Columns.Add("ItemNum", typeof(Int)); At this point in my program, the column already has a name. I just want to do something like this (not actual code): loadDT.Column[1].ChangeType(typeof(int)); Here's my code so far (that gives the columns their name): // get column headings for datatable by reading first line of csv file. StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(@"c:\load_forecast.csv"); headers = sr.ReadLine().Split(','); foreach (string header in headers) { loadDT.Columns.Add(header); } Obviously, I'm pretty new at this, but trying very hard to learn. • Problem resizing loader after loading swf

  I'm using the following code to load an swf in a pure actionscript project (Flex Builder 3) _loader = new Loader(); _loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, Loader_Complete); _loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, Loader_Init); var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("Skins/TestSkin.swf"); _loader.load(request); this.addChild(_loader); This works okay and displays the swf on the stage (500x375 for some reason - not sure why, TestSkin.swf is a flex app with no defined width and height) However, when I try to scale the swf so that it will fill the stage, I have problems. I have tried: Setting _loader.width and _loader.height in my Loader_Complete handler Setting _loader.width and _loader.height in my Loader_Init handler Setting _loader.content.width and loader.content.height in my Loader_Complete handler Setting _loader.content.width and loader.content.height in my Loader_Init handler I have seen examples online where people say these work for them but whenever I set width or height in any of these ways, the loaded swf is simply not displayed at all. Any idea what could be causing this? What is the correct way to resize an swf that has been loaded with a Loader object?

• SWT TabFolder: Weird Drawing Behaviour

  Hello StackOverflow Experts Description I have an SWT Page with a TabFolder with a number of dynamically created TabItems. On each TabItem i crate a Composite and set the TabItem.setControl() to the Composite. I then use this Composite as the page on which i draw my items. I draw a set of Controls, including Textbox's and Labels. For the First, Default Tab, this works fine. No problems. Problem On tabs that is not the first tab i have the following problems: I am unable to visually alter then Edited/Enabled state of my Controls. I am unable to visually set the Text content of my elements My Controls look disabled and have a Greyed out look. But i am able to Select the content with my mouse and use CTRL+C to copy it out. So the text contet is there and they are Editable. Visually it is just not updated. Any comments are appeciated, Any requests for code, examples will be supplied and help Welcommed. Updates I tried added the suggest debug loop to the code, where i attempt to enable my Controls. • Refreshing Facebook session from an iframe application

  I've got a Facebook iframe application that is completely external. By this I mean that once a user accesses the canvas URL to load the application, all the links in the iframe app go to my servers, and the canvas page never gets refreshed unless the user navigates to somewhere else on Facebook and comes back (or does a browser refresh). On the initial load of the app where Facebook creates the iframe, I get passed all the usual parameters like fb_sig_user which allows me to create an internal app session based on the facebook user. This app session (which is not the Facebook session, it's my own app session) is all I need to allow the user to work with the app. The problem comes an hour later. If the user leaves the computer, or uses the app for more than an hour, the Facebook session expires. There are some app pages which require fetching friend information, and once the FB session has expired, these pages break, throwing out errors such as "Error: Session key invalid or no longer valid". My question is whether there is a way to refresh the user's Facebook session from within an iframe application to keep it from expiring an hour later. Do any of the API calls do this? Is there a Facebook Connect trick to ping something? Is there any definitive method to keep it alive? I haven't been able to find any examples that specifically address this.

  I've already read threads on the topic, but can't find a solution that fits. I'm working on a drop-down list that takes an enum and uses that to populate itself. i found a VB.NET one. During the porting process, I discovered that it uses DirectCast() to set the type as it returns the SelectedValue. See the original VB here: http://jeffhandley.com/archive/2008/01/27/enum-list-dropdown-control.aspx the gist is, the control has Type _enumType; //gets set when the datasource is set and is the type of the specific enum The SelectedValue property kind of looks like (remember, it doesn't work): public Enum SelectedValue //Shadows Property { get { // Get the value from the request to allow for disabled viewstate string RequestValue = this.Page.Request.Params[this.UniqueID]; return Enum.Parse(_enumType, RequestValue, true) as _enumType; } set { base.SelectedValue = value.ToString(); } } Now this touches on a core point that I think was missed in the other discussions. In darn near every example, folks argued that DirectCast wasn't needed, because in every example, they statically defined the type. That's not the case here. As the programmer of the control, I don't know the type. Therefore, I can't cast it. Additionally, the following examples of lines won't compile because c# casting doesn't accept a variable. Whereas VB's CType and DirectCast can accept Type T as a function parameter: return Enum.Parse(_enumType, RequestValue, true); or return Enum.Parse(_enumType, RequestValue, true) as _enumType; or return (_enumType)Enum.Parse(_enumType, RequestValue, true) ; or return Convert.ChangeType(Enum.Parse(_enumType, RequestValue, true), _enumType); or return CastTo<_enumType>(Enum.Parse(_enumType, RequestValue, true)); So, any ideas on a solution? What's the .NET 3.5 best way to resolve this?

• [Qt] How to get rid of OCI.dll dependency when compiling static

  Hi, My application accesses an Oracle database through Qt's QSqlDatabase class. I'm compiling Qt as static for the release build, but I can't seem to be able to get rid of OCI.dll dependency. I'm trying to link against oci.lib (as available in Oracle's Instant Client with SDK). Here's my configure line : configure -qt-libjpeg -qt-zlib -qt-libpng -nomake examples -nomake demos -no-exceptions -no-stl -no-rtti -no-qt3support -no-scripttools -no-openssl -no-opengl -no-phonon -no-style-motif -no-style-cde -no-style-cleanlooks -no-style-plastique -static -release -opensource -plugin-sql-oci -plugin-sql-sqlite -platform win32-msvc2005 I link against oci.h and oci.lib in the SDK's folder by using : set INCLUDE=C:\oracle\instantclient\sdk\include;%INCLUDE% set LIB=C:\oracle\instantclient\sdk\lib\msvc;%LIB% Then, once Qt is compiled, I use the following lines in my *.pro file : QT += sql CONFIG += static LIBS += C:\oracle\instantclient\sdk\lib\msvc\oci.lib QTPLUGIN += qsqloci Then, in my main.cpp, I add the following commands to statically compile OCI plugin in the application : #include <QtPlugin> Q_IMPORT_PLUGIN(qsqloci) After compiling the project, I test it on my workstation and it works (as I have Oracle Instant Client installed). When I try on another workstation, I always get the message: This application has failed to start because OCI.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem. I don't understand why I still need OCI.dll, as my statically linked application is supposed to link to oci.lib instead. Is there any Qt people here that might have a solution for me ? Thanks a lot ! • Modify post data with a custom MVC extension?

  So I'm looking into writing some custom MVC extensions and the first one I'm attempting to tackle is a FormattedTextBox to handle things such as currency, dates, and times. I have the rendering of it working perfectly, formatting it, working with strong types and everything all golden. However, the problem I'm now running into is cleaning up the formatted stuff when the page posts the data back. Take for example, a currency format. Let's use USD for these examples. When an object has a property as a decimal, the value would be 79.95. Your edit view would be something like: <%= Html.FormattedTextBox(model => Model.Person.HourlyWage, "{0:C}") %> This is all well and good for the GET request, but upon POST, the value is going to be $79.95, which when you assign to that decimal, gets unhappy very quickly and ends up shoving a 0 in there. So my question is, how do I get code working somewhere to work with that value before the MVC Framework goes and starts shoving it back into my ViewModel? I'd much rather this be done server-side than client-side. Thanks!!
