• Database design grouping contacts by lists and companies

  Hi, I'm wondering what would be the best way to group contacts by their company. Right now a user can group their contacts by custom created lists but I'd like to be able to group contacts by their company as well as store the contact's position (i.e. Project Manager of XYZ company). Database wise this is what I have for grouping contacts into lists contact [id_contact] [int] PK NOT NULL, [lastName] [varchar] (128) NULL, [firstName] [varchar] (128) NULL, ...... contact_list [id_contact] [int] FK, [id_list] [int] FK, list [id_list] [int] PK [id_user] [int] FK [list_name] [varchar] (128) NOT NULL, [description] [TEXT] NULL Should I implement something similar for grouping contacts by company? If so how would I store the contact's position in that company and how can I prevent data corruption if a user modifies a contact's company name. For instance John Doe changed companies but the other co-workers are still in the old company. I doubt that will happen often (might not even happen at all) but better be safe than sorry. I'm also keeping an audit trail so in a way the contact would still need to be linked to the old company as well as the new one but without confusing what company he's actually working at the moment. I hope that made sense... Has anyone encountered such a problem? • How to get around the jslint error 'Don't make functions within a loop.'

  I am working on making all of our JS code pass through jslint, sometimes with a lot of tweaking with the options to get legacy code pass for now on with the intention to fix it properly later. There is one thing that jslint complains about that I do not have a workround for. Just to clarify, the implementation above is inspired by this blog post by John Resig. But we also have other instances of functions created within a loop. The only workaround so far is to exclude these JS files from jslint, but we would like to use jslint for code validation and syntax checking as part of our continuous integration and build workflow. Is there a better way to implement functionality like this or is there a way to tweak code like this through jslint?

• Parsing RSS2 In PHP

  I'm trying to get content from an RSS2 feed from one of my sites and use it in another site. The feed is here. And the description is a sort of the teaser. Changing $node->getElementsByTagName('description')->item(0)->nodeValue to $node->getElementsByTagName('content')->item(0)->nodeValue gives me nothing, and content:encoded is no better. Can someone please point me in the right direction to solving this? Thanks!

• Script working with mysql and php into a textarea and back

  I am trying to write a custom script that will keep a list of strings in a textarea. Each line of the textarea will be a row from a table. The problem I have is how to work the script to allow for adding, updating, or deleting rows based on a submit. So, for instance, I currently have 3 rows in the database: john sue mark I want to be able to delete sue and add richard and it will delete the row with sue and insert a row for richard. • Looping through a SimpleXML object, or turning the whole thing into an array.

  I'm trying to work out how to iterate though a returned SimpleXML object. I'm using a toolkit called Tarzan AWS, which connects to Amazon Web Services (SimpleDB, S3, EC2, etc). I'm specifically using SimpleDB. I can put data into the Amazon SimpleDB service, and I can get it back. I just don't know how to handle the SimpleXML object that is returned. The Tarzan AWS documentation says this: Look at the response to navigate through the headers and body of the response. Note that this is an object, not an array, and that the body is a SimpleXML object. • Learning Hibernate: too many connections

  I'm trying to learn Hibernate and I wrote the simplest Person Entity and I was trying to insert 2000 of them. I know I'm using deprecated methods, I will try to figure out what are the new ones later. And since there is only one open at each time, it should work. I tried to add session.close() after the commit, but I got Exception in thread "main" org.hibernate.SessionException: Session was already closed So how to solve the problem?

• How to make Resig's micro-templates XHTML compliant?

  Hello, I have been experimenting with John Resig's micro-template, which works great. However, the mark-up will not pass the XHTML 1.0 Transitional validation test. (Among other things, id attributes yield errors.) Replacing tags identifiers <, with [[,]], passes validation. Thus, I created a js script which at load time (jQuery document ready) converts the square brackets back to regular markers. This works fine in FF, but not in IE, Chrome, etc. Scripts embedded within CDATA tags validate as well. Question: Is there a way to insert micro-template in a script and still pass XHTML validation? My idea was to remove the CDATA tags once the page has been loaded. But there are probably smarter ways. (Note: I'd prefer not to inject HTML via js since the mark-up will be difficult to maintain.) PS: I looked at other js templates, but they are either not XHTML compliant or too bulky. TIA for any hints.

  Hi, I have a simple code fragment in JS working with prototype inheritance. function object(o) { function F() {} F.prototype = o; return new F(); } //the following code block has a alternate version var mammal = { color: "brown", getColor: function() { return this.color; } } var myCat = object(mammal); myCat.meow = function(){return "meow";} that worked fine but adding this: mammal.prototype.kindOf = "predator"; does not. ("mammal.prototype is undefined") Since I guessed that object maybe have no prototype I rewrote it, replacing the var mammal={... block with: function mammal() { this.color = "brown"; this.getColor = function() { return this.color; } } which gave me a bunch of other errors: "Function.prototype.toString called on incompatible object" and if I try to call _myCat.getColor() "myCat.getColor is not a function" Now I am totally confused. After reading Crockford, and Flanagan I did not get the solution for the errors. So it would be great if somebody knows... - why is the prototype undefined in the first example (which is foremost concern; I thought the prototype of explicitly set in the object() function) - why get I these strange errors trying to use the mammal function as prototype object in the object() function? Edit by the Creator of the Question: These two links helped a lot too: Prototypes_in_JavaScript on the spheredev wiki explains the way the prototype property works relativily simple. What it lacks is some try-out code examples. Some good examples are provided by Morris John's Article. I personally find the explanations are not that easy as in the first link, but still very good. The most difficult part even after I actually got it is really not to confuse the .prototype propery with the internal [[Prototype]] of an object.

  I am trying to learn how to use predicates and so am trying to replace the following working code with filteredArrayUsingPredicate... [filteredLocations removeAllObjects]; for (NSString *location in locations) { NSRange range = [location rangeOfString:query options:NSCaseInsensitiveSearch]; if (range.length > 0) { [filteredLocations addObject:location]; } } Instead I am trying.... [filteredLocations removeAllObjects]; NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"SELF contains %@", searchText]; [filteredLocations addObjectsFromArray: [locations filteredArrayUsingPredicate:predicate]]; I am not getting the same results with the predicate as I am with for loop rangeOfString. With the range of string for example searchText returns an 8 item array while with the same value returns only 2 with the predicate. Another example, hono will find honolulu in the locations array while it will not find anything using the predicate. As I understand it SELF represents the object object being evaluated ie. the locations array, so I think that is the correct syntax. Any help would be appreciated Thanks, John

  I'm following these instructions in order to set up Django on Windows. I have installed Python 2.6, PostgreSQL 8.4, Psycopg 2.0.14 for Python 2.6 and the latest version of Django from SVN. • When do you tag your software project?

  I realize there are various kinds of software projects: commercial (for John Doe) industrial (for Mr. Montgomery Burns) successful open-source (with audience larger than, say, 10 people) personal projects (with audience size in the vicinity of 1). each of which release a new version of their product on difference conditions. I'm particularly interested in the case of personal projects and open-source projects. When, or under what conditions, do you make a new release of any kind? Do you subscribe to a fixed recurring deadline such as every two weeks? Do you commit to a release of at least 10 minor fixes, or one major fix? Do you combine the two conditions such as at least one condition must hold, or both must hold? I reckon this is a subjective question. I ask this question in light of searching for tricks to keep my projects alive and kicking. Sometimes my projects are active but look as if they aren't because I don't have the confidence to make a release or a tag of any sort for a long time -- in the order of months.

  I'm receiving some data from a ZODB (Zope Object Database). I receive a mybrains object. Then I do: o = mybrains.getObject() and I receive a "Person" object in my project. Then, I can do b = o.name and doing print b on my class I get: José Carlos and print b.name.__class__ <type 'unicode'> I have a lot of "Person" objects. They are added to a list. names = [o.nome, o1.nome, o2.nome] Then, I trying to create a text file with this data. delimiter = ';' all = delimiter.join(names) + '\n' No problem. Now, when I do a print all I have: José Carlos;Jonas;Natália Juan;John But when I try to create a file of it: f = open("/tmp/test.txt", "w") f.write(all) I get an error like this (the positions aren't exaclty the same, since I change the names) UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe9' in position 84: ordinal not in range(128) If I can print already with the "correct" form to display it, why I can't write a file with it? Which encode/decode method should I use to write a file with this data? I'm using Python 2.4.5 (can't upgrade it)

• How to use jQuery .live() with ajax

  Currently I am using John Resig's LiveQuery plugin/function - http://ejohn.org/blog/jquery-livesearch/ - to allow users to sort through a long unordered-list of list-items. The code is as follows: $('input#q').liveUpdate('ul#teams').focus(); The issue arises when I use ajaxified tabs to sort the lists. Essentially I use ajax to pull in different lists and the liveUpdate() function doesn't have access to the new li's. I assume I would need to bind this using the .live() function - http://api.jquery.com/live/. But I am unclear how to bind this to an ajax event, I've only used the "click" event. How would I bind the new liveUpdate() to the newly loaded list-items? EDIT: The ajax tabs is run through the wordpress ajax api so the code is fairly complex, but simplified it is something like this: $('div.item-list-tabs').click( function(event) { var target = $(event.target).parent(); var data = {action, scope, pagination}; // Passes action to WP that loads my tab data $.post( ajaxurl, data, function(response) { $(target).fadeOut( 100, function() { $(this).html(response); $(this).fadeIn(100); }); }); return false; }); This is simplified for the sake of this conversation, but basically once the $.post loads the response in place .liveUpdate() doesn't have access to it. I believe the .live() function is the answer to this problem, I'm just unclear on how to implement it with the $.post()

• jQuery inconsistent .remove by class on element with multiple classes

  I've got a page where messages and associated elements (responses, forwards, etc) all share a class based on the database id of the parent. For example this is a message this is another message this is a comment this is another comment tim posted a new message sara forwarded a message to john at times I need to remove all elements with the same id, so I originally had jQuery('div#'+id).remove(); but that would sometimes not remove all the ids because ids are supposed to be unique. So I added the id as a class. now I use jQuery('div.'+id).remove(); but this seems to be about 80% effective, and sometimes the divs aren't being removed. I'm not sure if the issue is because the div has more than one class, but I need the classes because that is how I refer to the elements when somebody clicks. For instance, jQuery('div.message').click(function(){ get the id, send it to the server and get the message }); is there something wrong I'm doing here? or is there a better way to do this?

  I am parsing a log containing nicknames and hostnames. I want to end up with an array that contains the hostname and the latest used nickname. I have the following code, which only creates a list over the hostnames: hostnames = [] # while(parsing): # nick = nick_on_current_line # host = host_on_current_line if host in hostnames: # Hostname is already present. pass else: # Hostname is not present hostnames.append(host) print hostnames # ['[email protected]', '[email protected]', '[email protected]'] I thought it would be nice to end up with something along the lines of the following: # [['[email protected]', 'John'], ['[email protected]', 'Mary'], ['[email protected]', 'Joe']] My problem is finding out if the hostname is present in such a list hostnames = [] # while(parsing): # nick = nick_on_current_line # host = host_on_current_line if host in hostnames[0]: # This doesn't work. # Hostname is already present. # Somehow check if the nick stored together # with the hostname is the latest one else: # Hostname is not present hostnames.append([host, nick]) Are there any easy fix to this, or should I try a different approach? I could always have an array with objects or structs (if there is such a thing in python), but I would prefer a solution to my array problem.

  Not sure how to go about this... But, I have two arrays, one with updated information, another with outdated information... There are a lot more elements in the second array, but I'm looking to "update" the outdated one with the updated information. Here's what the arrays look like: //Outdated Array ( [0] => Array ( [anum] => 3236468462 [cid] => 4899097762 [mid] => 1104881401 [na_title] => [na_fname] => JOHN [m_initial] => [na_lname] => DOE [na_suffix] => [na_addr1] => 1234 SAMPLE AVENUE [na_addr2] => [na_city] => NORWALK [state] => OH [zip] => [zip_plus_4] => [route] => R002 [dma_code] => 510334 ) ) //Updated Array ( [1] => Array ( [0] => YUD990 [1] => 98 [2] => 1234 Sample Avenue [3] => [4] => Norwalk [5] => OH [6] => 44857-9215 [7] => 3236468462 ) ) To clarify, I want to: (1) Match up the value for [7] from the updated array with the value for [anum] in the outdated array, and then update [na_addr1], [na_addr2], [na_city], [state], [zip], [zip_plus_4] in the outdated array with the values for [2],[3],[4],[5],[6] (I know I'll need to split the updated [6] in order to get it to map corrected to the outdated) Feel like I'm making this very confusing... sorry about that...

• Deselect dates in ASP.NET Calendar Control

  I'm trying to select and de-select dates on a C# Web Calendar control. The problem I have is that I can select or deselect dates except when there is only a single date selected. Clicking on it does not trigger the selection changed event, so Ineed to do something on the dayrender event but I'm not sure what or how. Edit: Added the Pre_Render event code. • How to query JDO persistent objects in unowned relationship model?

  Hello, I'm trying to migrate my app from PHP and RDBMS (MySQL) to Google App Engine and have a hard time figuring out data model and relationships in JDO. In my current app I use a lot of JOIN queries like: SELECT users.name, comments.comment FROM users, comments WHERE users.user_id = comments.user_id AND users.email = '[email protected]' As I understand, JOIN queries are not supported in this way so the only(?) way to store data is using unowned relationships and "foreign" keys. There is a documentation regarding that, but no useful examples. So far I have something like this: @PersistenceCapable public class Users {     @PrimaryKey     @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY)     private Key key;     @Persistent     private String name;         @Persistent     private String email;         @Persistent     private Set<Key> commentKeys;     // Accessors... } @PersistenceCapable public class Comments {     @PrimaryKey     @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY)     private Key key;     @Persistent     private String comment;         @Persistent     private Date commentDate;     @Persistent     private Key userKey;     // Accessors... } So, how do I get a list with commenter's name, comment and date in one query? I have came up with something below hope that many people will find this useful. The only Draw back I can think of this is the partial search: Jo =returns "John" by using the like %% statement. • Making Javascript and HTML5 games

  A long time ago (Netscape 4-era), I wrote Javascript-based games: Pong, Minesweeper, and John Conway's Life among them. I'm getting back into it, and want to get my hands even dirtier. I have a few games in mind: Axis & Allies clone, with rugged maps and complex rules. Tetris clone, possibly with real-time player-vs-player or player-vs-computer mode Breakout clone, with a couple weapons and particle velocities In all of these, I have only a few objectives: Use JavaScript and HTML 5 - it should run on Chrome, Safari, or maybe an iPad. Start small and simple, then build-up features. Learn something new about game design and implementation. So my questions are: How would you implement these games? Do you have any technology recommendations? If you've written these games, what was the hardest part? N.B. I also want to start from first-principles - if you recommend a framework/library, I would appreciate some theory or implementation details behind it. These games are different enough that I should learn something new from each one.
