• MySQL replication hung after slave goes offline and comes back online again

  I have a master server and several slave servers replicating a single database. I am using in MySQL 5.0 in SLES 11. During fault tolerance testing I found that when the slave's network connection is broken (cable un-plugged) and then restored, replication hangs. It shows no errors and the slave appears to be running but the Read_Master_Log_Pos and Exec_Master_Log_Pos values do not match the log postion on the master server. The Slave_IO_State is "Waiting for master to send event". The Slave_IO_Running and Slave_SQL_Running values are both are "Yes". The Master_Log_File and Relay_Master_Log_File match. If I stop and start the slave or restart the mysql daemon, replication starts working again. Any ideas on what I can do about this?

• Quitting dozens of the same process in OS X Terminal

  Whenever I'm testing a python class I'm working on, I initiate and re-initiate python a lot to refresh the updates I make to the code. When I close the Terminal window later, I get a window that says I am about to quit a LOT of running instances of python. Is this a bug on terminal's part, or am I really running all those? I Ctrl-Z out of it each time but it always says [8]+ Stopped Python where the 8 is incremental and often gets into the 20's and 30's. Am I doing something stupid?

• UEC - Can the Cluster Controller and Storage Controller be seperate systems?

  My department is implementing an Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud. I have done the testing and am quite comfortable with the 4 pieces, CC/SC, CLC, WS, NC. Looking at various documents below it appears the the Storage Controller and Cluster Controller (eucalyptus-sc and eucalyptus-cc) are always installed on the same system. • Hardware Raid Card Reviews with SSDs

  Yes I realize there are several questions about this but none of them seem to have the answer I'm looking for. I have two SSDs and am looking to buy a purely hardware raid card for them; however, I can't seem to find any reviews that have specifically tested hardware raid cards with SSDs rather than testing the SSDs themselves. I'm looking for a review because I'm assuming that for example: 100% gain with two 7200rpm drives doesn't necessarily mean 100% gain with a pair of SSDs, since there would be higher speeds, meaning more throughput, meaning more processor/memory usage for the card. If this assumption is wrong then that's fantastic; however if it's true, I am quite sad and would really appreciate any advice or reviews you can find. Thanks in advance!

• Good/Better config for MySQL on an EC2 Large Instance

  I have an EC2 Large instance dedicated to MySQL. It will be serving a Joomla/Magento combo so it has a blend of InnoDB and MyISAM tables. I have only worked with MyISAM in the past and am therefore unfamiliar with the settings InnoDB uses. Experiments so far have been less than fruitful, as I keep causing the InnoDB engine to be disabled. My instance is running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit server edition and has ~7.5G of ram. MySQL is currently using ~0.6% of that, with somewhat poor performance. I would like to configure it to use as much of the system RAM as is reasonable. Testing some settings I learned that the InnoDB logs can't collectively be larger than 4G. Would anyone be able to provide some base InnoDB and MyISAM settings to get my started. Thank you Tim

• Windows Server 2008, IIS7 and Windows Authentication

  We currently have a development server set up which we are trying to test some Windows authentication ASP.NET code on. We have turned on Windows Authentication in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 fine, and it asks the user for a username and password as excepted, but the problem is it doesn't appear to accept any credentials. This code for example... Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Page.Title = "Home page for " + User.Identity.Name End Sub ...always returns an empty string. One theory we have is that we dont have Active Directory installed as of yet, we are just testing this by logging on via the machine name not a domain. Is this type of authentication only applicatable to domains (if so we can probably install Active Directory and some test accounts) - or is it possible to get the user identity when logging in using the machine name? Ideally we would like to be able to test this on our local machines (Windows 7 Pro) using our own accounts (again these aren't on a domain) and IIS but this has the same issue as our dev server. • How do I maximize and check my gigabit transfer rate?

  I'm trying to maximize my LAN transfer speed. LAN cards and switch are all gigabit on a CAT 6 cable. Modes are set correctly to 1000 full duplex. CentOS server Testing with ftp from both windows and fedora, I'm only having the speed around 11MB/s. On windows I notice that the first few seconds of file transfer I'm actually getting around 25MB/s before it drops to 11MB/s Can anyone please recommend me what my next step should be to increase this performance? Are there any utilities I can use to test the file transfer speed without taking hard drive speed into consideration? The only thing I know is the MTU which I will have to wait until the office hour is over before I can play with it. If there are anything else I should be aware of, please please let me know. • Amazon EC2 Creating Tunnel with OpenVPN

  I have followed these instructions: http://aws.amazon.com/articles/0639686206802544 I can ping the VPN endpoints and I have the corresponding VPC CIDR pointing to the EC2 instance in the route table. Here is my config: port 1194 proto udp dev tun # Remote peer and network remote Elastic_IP route 10.0.0.0/16 # Configure local and remote VPN endpoints ifconfig 169.254.255.1 169.254.255.2 # The pre-shared static key secret /etc/openvpn/ovpn.key keepalive 10 120 persist-key persist-tun log /var/log/openvpn.log verb 3 When I look at my logs, I get this error: RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: 10.0.0.0/16: Name or service not known OpenVPN ROUTE: failed to parse/resolve route for host/network: 10.0.0.0/16 in VPC1, the CIDR is 172.31.0.0/16 which is targeting the EC2 instance also running OpenVPN. I'm getting the same error from the Instance in VPC2 with the corresponding CIDR. Just for testing, i stopped the IPTABLES service I am running the Amazon linux AMI image (x64) as specified in the article I linked.

  Hi! I have a website that I will be hosting DNS for (testing purposes at first and then it will have some limited traffic). I have set up DNS so that site.tld has an A record to the actual IP but I don't know what to do about www.site.tld. Both site.tld and www.site.tld will point to the same server / application so my logic tells me to add a cname record so that www.site.tld becomes an alias for site.tld, BUT, I've been checking my settings with intodns.com and if I only add a CNAME for the www.site.tld it gives me the following error: ERROR: I could not get any A records for www.cexa.ro! (the error clears once I do an A record for www.site.tld to point to the actual IP) I don't know if there is a "rule" that "www." should always be an A record even though it's actually pointing to the same IP / application.   I would like to get a dedicated server to run VMWare, VirtualBox, or similar. On this box, I would like to host 3-4 virtual instances of Linux, to act as nodes in a web farm. Performance is not that important, this would only be for testing and experimenting. I need something sub $1000 (including tax/shipping). Can someone recommend a pre-built server that would do the trick? I am pretty ignorant of hardware so building one is not going to work for me. Also, would I need multiple network cards to simulate a web farm or can the virtualization software handle that for me. Thanks

• Setting alias for DynDNS domain

  Hey all, I've created DynDNS domain for testing my local sites, and i'm having trouble with pointing to root domain. From my registrar (GoDaddy) I've created a CNAME for www to point my example.dyndns.com so going to url www.example.com I'm reaching my site. But if I'm going to example.com I'm reaching to the IP of the A record. I can't set the IP for the A record to be my IP because I have dynamic IP, and it changes constatly, and I can't point the A record to domain, only IP. When trying to create CNAME record @ to point example.dyndns.com I'm getting error "A record of a different type exists for the hostname @, could not create CNAME" The only record using the '@' host are NS record, which I can't delete, and when tried to set another NS record with @ point to example.dyndns.com, I've lost connection to my site :) So what can I do to get example.com url reach my site? • How to start vim without executing /etc/vimrc?

  On my Linux server at work, the admins did not install cscope, and I installed it from source in my home directory and added it to the $PATH. The trouble is, the /etc/vimrc has a reference to /usr/bin/cscope which does not exist and everytime I start vim, it complains about that and I have to press for that message to go away. It is interesting that if I remove cscope from my $PATH, I don't get that behavior - so it is possible that vim is testing that cscope exists somewhere, and only then executing the cscope configuration - but then it gets it wrong! So my question is: can I set something up in my .vimrc so it does not source the global /etc/vimrc? I don't want to move cscope out of PATH, as I don't want to type the full directory name every time I run it from the command line.

• Improper output in SSH session on OSX using FreeSSHd on Windows with cygwin bash/sh shell

  I am testing out running an SSH server on a local Windows VM. I have installed FreeSSHd and set the command shell to "c:\cygwin\bin\sh --login -i" (bash as well) with "Use new console engine" unchecked. • Bridging VirtualBox over OpenVPN TAC adapter on Windows

  I'm trying to configure a virtual machine (VirtualBox guest running Backtrack 4) with a bridged adapter over a VPN connection. The VPN is is hosted by the cybersecurity club at my university, and connects to a sandboxed LAN designed for penetration testing against various servers that the club has built. My host (Windows 7 Ultimate) connects to the VPN fine and is assigned an IP through DHCP, but for some reason the VM can't do the same thing, and I'm not sure why. It's like OpenVPN is filtering out packets from the MAC address it doesn't recognize. I want the virtual machine to bridge over the VPN connection, because our IT office has very strict policies about what you can and can't do on the network. I want to be able to run active attacks (ARP spoofing, nmap, Nessus scans) in the sandbox environment without risking the traffic accidentally going over the university network and getting my internet access revoked. Bridging over the VPN connection and running all attacks from inside the VM would solve that problem. Any idea why the host can use this interface, but the VM can't?

  I have two ASUS laptops running Windows 7 connected wirelessly via 802.11n at 150 Mbit, as reported by Task Manager. The router is Netgear WNDR3700. Running parallel client threads does not increase the overall total speed. Why would I only be getting 11.5 Mbit on a 150 Mbit connection?

  Hello I'm constructing 5ESX+a vCenter serv. I'm testing FT on the system. Today vCenter OS (W2008) demanded system reboot. After rebooting vCenter Serv. All of ESX hosts have alert icon. end indicate "not responding" I tried to connect ESX (version 4) hosts to vCenter again. Once they came back normally, but after few seconds ,They turned red again. All of them have ping connection to vCenter serv. There are no red messages in Tusks and events. Two messages are found in Summary of Cluster ·There aren't sufficient resource for HA failover. ·Can't contact primary HA agent. I'm also not able to reset FT configuration because all of VMS aren't accessed from vCenter What should I do?

• Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port significantly slower under Windows 7 comparing to Windows XP

  I am using a Prolific USB-to-Serial adapter based on the Prolific chip to use with a device on serial port. I have the latest version of the driver installed: 1.3.0 (2010-7-15). When I use my device with this adapter on my main Windows 7 (32bit) system it takes 8-9 seconds to send a command through to the device. However, when I do the same thing on a different Windows XP system (an old laptop I borrowed for testing) it only takes 2-3 seconds. I have made sure that the port settings and other variables are the same between systems. I also tested on a third laptop (also running Windows 7) and again got a significant delay. So the question is if anyone else experienced the same problem and found a solution. I would like to avoid moving to an XP system for what I need to achieve so that's my last option.

  Similar to this related question, I came home and found that my media center pc showed this message, Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter Before I do anything with the (defective?) harddisk, what are the best first steps I can take to fix this with a minimum of damage? Normally the machine (Win Vista) is always on and never reboots by itself (Windows auto-updates are disabled too). Something must have caused it to reboot, though I'm sure we didn't have a power outage. The machine can't reboot on that disk, but it will boot on another disk I just plugged in for testing. I haven't changed anything, or even touched the machine, for several days, and it has been running fine until now. I did replace the power supply some weeks ago, because the old one suddenly stopped working. It has been working fine with the replacement PSU.

  Hello I didn't find the answer in Clonezilla's site/mailing list archives. Maybe someone has already seen this issue and knows how to recover from it: On a test host, using www.partedmagic.com, I created two partitions: One to hold an OS I wish to use for testing (/sda1), and a second partition to hold images (/sda2) After trying out Windows7, I used CloneZilla to restore an XPSP3 image, but I get the following error message when rebooting: "Reboot and select proper boot device" Could it be that Clonezilla didn't save/restore the MBR? Gparted didn't let me set a partition as "active", so it could also be this, but I have no idea. Thank you for any help.

  I am working on a project of setting up a web administered inventory database for my work (or if they don't want it then i'll enjoy learning about it) and hit the problem of allowing only authorized users to access the website (In its testing/development phase, I allow all people to navigate to the website to add entries to the database and query it). I am trying to make it so only particular users in the domain (Active Directory) are allowed to access the website after they are queried about their credentials. I read that Apache (I am using a LAMP server) has a means of asking visitors to the website to provide LDAP credentials in order to gain access to the site, but I wasn't sure if that was exactly what I was looking for. If anyone has experience in the LDAP configurations for Apache that I mentioned or any other means of securely authenticating with websites I would greatly appreciate advice or a direction to go Thank you!

I looked at using SQLIOSim but it doesn't seem to simulate TempDB. Can anyone recommend a way to test data, log and TempDB performance? • unable to get local issuer certificate - Ubuntu 11.04

  I'm facing a strange issue. My vps from Linode has no issue connecting to apple push server with following command. openssl s_client -connect gateway.sandbox.push.apple.com:2195 -cert Test_dev_apns_cert.pem -key Test_dev_apns_key.pem However, I was using the same pem files with above command testing from my another low budget vps and I'm getting this: Verify return code: 20 (unable to get local issuer certificate) Both are running Ubuntu 11.04 and installed LAMP as usual. No special configuration is done to both servers for SSL. Am I missing something here?
