• Windows shuts down unexpectedly when waking up from sleep

  I've been facing this issue since yesterday, whenever I put the computer into sleep mode and when I wake up, it takes me to boot menu with choices; start Windows normally, safe mode, etc. in short, it shuts down unexpectedly while waking up. I have my laptop dual booted with up-to-date Windows 7 SP1 (32-bit) and Ubuntu 10.10. This problem is not happening with Ubuntu. I googled the issue and went through this, this and this page. But, none of the threads were helpful to solve it. I've found that there's something to do with device drivers. What can be done to resolve the issue? Can SFC utility solve it if it is due to corrupt system files?

• Understanding branching strategy/workflow correctly

  I'm using svn without branches (trunk-only) for a very long time at my workplace. I had discovered most or all of the issues related to projects which do not have any branching strategy. Unlikely this is not going to change at my workplace but for my private projects. For my private projects which most includes coworkers and working together at the same time on different features I like to have an robust branching strategy with supports long-term releases powered by git. I find out that the Atlassian Toolchain (JIRA, Stash and Bamboo) helped me most and it also recommending me an branching strategy which I like to verify for the team needs. The branching strategy was taken directly from Atlassian Stash recommendation with a small modification to the hotfix branch tree. All hotfixes should also merged into mainline. The branching strategy in words mainline (also known as master with git or trunk with svn) contains the "state of the art" developing release. Everything here was successfully checked with various automated tests (through Bamboo) and looks like everything is working. It is not proven as working because of possible missing tests. It is ready to use but not recommended for production. feature covers all new features which are not completely finished. Once a feature is finished it will be merged into mainline. Sample branch: feature/ISSUE-2-A-nice-Feature bugfix fixes non-critical bugs which can wait for the next normal release. Sample branch: bugfix/ISSUE-1-Some-typos production owns the latest release. hotfix fixes critical bugs which have to be release urgent to mainline, production and all affected long-term *release*es. Sample branch: hotfix/ISSUE-3-Check-your-math release is for long-term maintenance. Sample branches: release/1.0, release/1.1 release/1.0-rc1 I am not an expert so please provide me feedback. • Opening an oracle database crashes the service

  I am experiencing a weird issue with Oracle where the service started fine after a crash. The database mount went fine as well. However, when I issue alter database open; command, the database does not open, gives a generic cannot connect to the database error & crashes the service. Oracle support has not seen this issue before so it's pretty scary. The fact that there are no logs that give any leads as to what could be causing this is also scary. I was wondering if good folks over at Server Fault had seen something like this or have some insights on things that I could try. It's Oracle 10g running on Windows Server 2003. Thanks, Ashish

  Recently I discovered the colorful world of comic books.  In the past I've read comics a few times but never really got into them.  When I wanted to start a collection I decided either video games or comics yet stayed away from comics because I am less familiar with them. In any case, I stopped by my local comic shop and picked up a few comics and a few trade paperbacks.  After reading them and understanding their basic flow I began to enjoy not only the stories but the art styles hiding behind those little white bubbles of text (well, they're USUALLY white).  My first stop at the comic store I ended up with: - Nemesis #1 (cover A) - Shuddertown #1 (cover A I think) - Daredevil: King of Hell's Kitchen Trade Paperback - Peter Parker: Spiderman - One Small Break Trade Paperback It took me about 3-4 days to read all of that including re-reading the single issues and glancing over the beginning of Daredevil again.  After a week of looking around online I knew a little more about the comics I wanted to pick up and the kind of art style I enjoyed.  While Peter Parker: Spiderman was ok, I really enjoyed the detailed, realistic look of Daredevil and Shuddertown. Now, a few years back I picked up the game The Darkness for PS3.  I knew it was based off a comic but never read the comic.  I decided I'd pick up a few issues of it and ended up with: - The Darkness #80 (cover A) - The Darkness #81 (cover A) - The Darkness #82 (cover A) - The Darkness #83 (cover A) - The Darkness Shadows and Flame #1  (one-shot; cover A) - The Darkness Origins: Volume 1 Trade Paperback (contains The Darkness #1-6) - New Age boards and bags for storing my comics The Darkness is relatively good though jumping from issue #6 to issue #80 I lost a bit on who the enemy in the current series is.  I think out of all of them, issue #83 was my favorite of them. I'm signed up at the local shop to continue getting Nemesis, The Darkness, and Shuddertown, and I'll probably pick up a few different ones this weekend...

• Very slow write access to SSD disks on some Asus P8Z77 motherboards

  I have Asus P8Z77-V LK motherboard, that ran Mint 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04) just perfectly, but recently I've tried to install Mint 17 and noticed abysmal write performance. Write speed on SSD disk was about 1.5MB/sec, when it's supposed to be in 150-250MB/sec range. For write testing I've used dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=10M count=10 while booted up from LiveCD. I have also tested the read speed with hdparm -tT /dev/sda and got about 440MB/sec -- that's normal. I can tell, the read performance has not degraded at all and is not an issue here. Since I had a few different SSD disks and few motherboards, I've tested and tested and here are results: Asus P8H77 works fine with Mint13, has very slow write speed starting from Mint14. Asus P8Z77-V LK works with Mint13, has very slow write speed starting from Mint14. Asus P8Z77-V PRO works with Mint13, and works just fine with Mint14, 15, 16 and 17. The only difference between "PRO" version and others is that it has extra SATA controller onboard (in addition to the Z77 chipset SATA controller) providing extra 2 SATA ports. SSD disks work fine with "PRO" version when connected to the native SATA ports as well as to the ports provided by extra SATA controller, so this does not look like a hardware issue. As far as I can tell, there's something changed in the kernel while going from 3.2 to 3.5, that affects the detection of onboard SATA controller for Asus P8*77 motherboards, that screws up the write speed for SSD drives. Could anyone shed some light on how to fix this issue or, possibly, give a pointer to a more suitable place to ask this question?

• SVN Merge two reposiories - what about the UUIDs?

  Hi, This is my scenario: Originally had two seperate repositories, I need to merge these into one repository. I don't care too much about the history in these repositories. I created a new repository and can import the repositories no problem. The issue is with users working copies, I can ask them to switch --relocate them however there is the issue of the UUID which will be different for each original repository: I can only reassign the UUID in the new repository to match one of the original repositories. So what is the best method to resolve this issue? (I suspect/hope I am going about this wrong...) Any ideas appreciated! -Grant.

• Is Oracle certified to run on VMWare?

  This question in similar occurences gets asked during every Upgrade Workshop at least once. People would like to know if they can run an Oracle Database or Oracle Real Application Clusters or Oracle Grid Control or Oracle Fusion Middleware or ... in an VM environment with VMWare's virtualisation products. And the answer is: Yes, you can!! But ... there's a fine print you should take care on before setting up virtual environments with a different solution than XEN based Oracle VM. • Excel crashes when opening Excel files from Internet Explorer

  I have been running into some issues when opening Excel files from Internet Explorer, generally the first document or two will open fine but after that trying to open a file will cause Excel and Internet Explorer to crash to the desktop without any notifications being given. This doesn't happen for users who are running Excel 2007, but for users with Excel 2003 it may or may not happen to them. The files in question are Excel XML files and Internet Explorer 6 and Excel 2003 are being use. At this time it would not be possible to upgrade Internet Explorer, but it would be able to upgrade to Excel to version 2007 if that would resolve the issue. Overdue Update: We recently upgraded to Firefox at the office which has rendered this error a non-issue; however, it is still unresolved from the standpoint that we haven't been able to come up with an explanation to the issue. Since IE6 is still installed on the systems, a fix to the problem (or explanation of why it's happening) would be appreciated.

• Recurring lsb-release and Software Center glitch after installing MATE

  I just recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10. Not a fan of Unity, so I decided to try out the MATE desktop from Linux Mint. I added the Mint repository, grabbed and installed the MATE packages, and got rid of the repo so I wouldn't be downloading any other Mint packages. I did have some glitches with the packages (missing dependency stuff), but I fixed it. As other users have reported, installing MATE temporarily breaks the Ubuntu Software Center because lsb_release shows the machine as Linux Mint rather than Ubuntu. I can fix it as noted in this answer by editing /etc/*release and /etc/*issue. Problem is, this only works until I reboot the machine. Every time I reboot, /etc/lsb-release and /etc/issue revert to Linux Mint, breaking Software Center again until I edit them, again. Can anyone help me pin down what keeps changing these files? Much appreciated, thanks. Rephrasing the crux of the problem: where do /etc/lsb-release and /etc/issue get their info from? What would cause them to be revised on reboot?

• XenServer VM's lose network settings

  We deploy virtual machines using Citrix XenServer 6.0 for our clients. Two seperate clients experience the same issue: when a Server 2008 virtual machine is restarted, the static IP addresses (network address, subnet, gateway, primary DNS) don't appear to apply correctly as the IP's cannot be pinged, network services cannot be accessed etc. The issue is resolved by manually switching the network adapters to DHCP, then re-setting them to the original static IP's. While not a major issue, it's a pain when restarting servers due to Windows Updates, plus iSCSI drives need to be manually connected to Windows again via iSCSI Initiator. We have tried removed the network adapters from the virtual machine under XenCentre but without luck. Anyone experienced similar issues?

• GetContactList stops reporting collisions on welded bodies

  I have some strange problem with my game which uses Box2D as physics engine and I'm out of ideas on what I can do to solve it. My game is a class assignment where I need to build a simple game where the main character moves in a 2D environment while square blocks comes from below him. Each time a collision occurs, that block is attached to the character using a weld joint, when three blocks of the same colors are together, they annihilate themselves(an effect similar to Bejeweled). I'm using a recursive function to iterate through all the attached blocks of a given block to see if there are enough blocks for them to be deleted. I'm using GetContactList function to iterate through the list of contacts to see which blocks are adjacent to each other. The results are quite disappointing, the blocks only get annihilated in few cases. After a lot of debugging, I found the issue, but I still don't know how to solve. My issue is: after some time, GetContactList STOPS returning contacts (return NULL) to blocks that were already attached for some time. I spent some time reading the Box2D manual as well as some tutorials and still didn't find any clue of what is happening. • Be careful when installing the Blend Windows Phone 7 Add-In

  There was a small issue today with the release of the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP (April 2010 Refresh) refresh. The issue is that the Expression Blend Add-in Preview for Windows Phone (April Refresh) is not compatible with Blend 4.0.20408.0, which was the public RC (release candidate). A few days ago, the Blend team released a fix for an issue that was sometimes causing a crash when Blend was starting up. This new release (V4.0.20421.0) was not very well announced however, and many people (including me) did not install it. After all, Blend did not crash at startup of either of my machines, so I didn’t deem necessary to install yet a new RC. However, it is now clear that the Windows Phone 7 Add-In needs this latest-and-greatest version to work. If you have Blend 4.0.20408.0, you won’t be able to work with Windows Phone 7 in Blend. To add to the confusion, the page where you can download V4.0.20421.0 from has an error, and the wrong version number is wrong (at least at the time of writing). Do not let this confuse you. • Latitude E6410 - Screen flickering on Windows 8

  On Windows 8, my Latitude E6410 screen (1440x900 - 60Hz - NVidia NVS3100M) is flickering. If I turn off the laptop for 30 minutes and turn it back on, there's no flickering but it eventually start again after 10-15 minutes. The flickering seems more present at the top and bottom of the screen. I already updated the graphic card drivers, bios, etc. Nothing seems to fix the issue. To prove that it isn't a hardware issue, when I reinstalled Windows 7 I couldn't reproduce the issue. Any idea what could cause this?

• Carbonite Restore Error after Windows Update

  I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client. The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file." (The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old install.) I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to. I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.

• Group policy issues

  We are having an issue on one of our clients relatively new sbs installs. The domain consists of a single SBS 2011 server with 4 windows 7 clients and 3 xp clients. Most of the time everything is fine however roughly every 3 days windows 7 clients start timing out when trying to receive computer group policy. This results in hour long delays before getting to the login screen in the morning. This is accompanied by event ID 6006, win login errors stating it took 3599 seconds to process policy. Once they've booted they can log in without issue however gpupdate fails again on computer policy and gpresult comes back with access denied, even when run as domain admin... At this point if we restart the server the network is fine for 3 days. I thought perhaps it might be ipv6 or smb2, but disabling ipv6 on the clients doesn't help and the clients can browse the sysvol folder freely on smb2 anyway. Does anyone have any ideas or routes I can take to further diagnose the issue? Thanks in advance :)

• SQL SERVER – Excel Losing Decimal Values When Value Pasted from SSMS ResultSet

  No! It is not a SQL Server Issue or SSMS issue. It is how things work. There is a simple trick to resolve this issue. It is very common when users are coping the resultset to Excel, the floating point or decimals are missed. The solution is very much simple and it requires a small adjustment in the Excel. By default Excel is very smart and when it detects the value which is getting pasted is numeric it changes the column format to accommodate that. Now as Zero which are training any digit after decimal points have no value, Excel automatically hides it. To prevent this to happen user has to convert columns to text format so it can preserve the formatting. Here is how you can do it. Select the corner between A and 1 and Right Click on it. It will select complete spreadsheet. If you want to change the format of any column you can select an individual column the same way. In the menu Click on Format Cells… It will bring up the following menu. Here by default the selected column will be General, change that to Text. It will change the format of all the cells to Text. Now once again paste the values from SSMS to the Excel. This time it will preserve the decimal values from SSMS. Solved! Any other trick you do you know to preserve the decimal values? • How do I make my Geforce GTS 250's power save mode stop causing audio stuttering?

  Whenever my GTS 250 enters its power save mode, downscaling its frequencies, my audio stutters. This affects both my onboard audio and my Audigy Soundblaster 2 ZS. Changing Windows power save mode options such as PCI-E link state power management or Power Management Mode in the nVidia control panel have no effect on this issue. Replacing the power supply had no effect on this issue. The BIOS is the latest version, and I have the latest motherboard chipset and graphics drivers installed. I do not overclock. I started to see this issue after I upgraded my rig from its Socket 939 board to a Socket 1156 board with a Core i5-750 while simultaneously upgrading from Vista to 7.

• apt-get update very slow, stuck at "Waiting for headers"

  I have looked at similar questions: Stuck at 0% [waiting for headers] (apt) apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers" However neither one of them answer my problem. I am running 12.04 AMD64 and have recently started getting an issue that when I update my repos from my connection at home through a terminal, using sudo apt-get update, it takes forever (literally after 2 hours it was at 28%), however when I run from a different location it takes less than 5 minutes to complete. I have attempted changing which mirror I use but that does not solve the issue. I have also cut down what is in my sources list but this also makes no difference. There are no faults on my ADSL line as I have already contacted my ISP to check this. It also makes no difference if I use a WiFi or network cable connection. What could be my issue? A speed test (www.speedtest.net) comes out at about 0.9 Mbps down and 0.42 Mbps up (which is a shade under the advertised line speed), I reside in South Africa and use the UCT LEG server. But I have also tried the other mirrors available in SA....none of them make a difference.

• Sound not playing on Windows XP - SoundEffect or Song: Monogame

  I'm trying to integrate sound into my Monogame game. I don't have the content pipeline hack -- just straight Monogame (Beta 3) at this point. (I tried adding the content pipeline, but ran into some issues.) I added a .wav file to my /Content directory, and I can create and instantiate both SoundEffect and Song classes. However, both show durations of 00:00:00 (on a ten-second long file), and neither plays. I can call LoadContent without any issue. But when I call Play, nothing plays. I've tried a couple of different sounds, and different formats (MP3 and WAV) to rule that out. Only WAV seems to even load without crashing out, but it doesn't play. There seems to be a GitHub issue that fixes this problem in 2.5.1. Downgrading to 2.5.1 doesn't fix this problem; it seems like it's fixed in 3.0 (_data is set in the SoundEffect instance). This issue only occurs on Windows XP. I tested it on a Windows 7 laptop, and the sound plays fine.

  in MVC3 razor we found that their is no way to watch the design in Visual studio as well we can see aspx file by going to design mode. their is a little trick to solve this issue first is that if you have Expression web or Vs 2008 then open the file on them how see here in expression web 4 you need to add the extension .cshtml and open them as html as we open other. in Visual studio 2008 you need to add the extension .cshtml and set them open as html. well their is no big trouble if design not worked. but in some case when you need to get this issue solved this need to be work for configuration do this: Expression Web 4 > tools > application options > configure editor > click on new extension icon show in exact left put the cshtml in the window they show you and choose expression web [open as html] after that you can see the design in expression web. by default Expression web not have cshtml as known extension so you need to do that to add them because without it they never handle cshtml file and refer them to Visual studio. after setting this you  EW4 open the cshtml file as html and show you design in design mode. in Visual studio 2008 you can use same trick to solve this issue just follow this step > options > text editors > file extension put cshtml in textbox and set the option html editor from dropdown and click on add and ok this will open your cshtml file as html.

  Having grown up in South Florida this short, but very enlightening, video explaining how the City of Miami has implemented a 311 citizen service request system using Windows Azure, Silverlight and Bing Maps definitely caught my attention. Miami311 The Miami311 System is a Windows Azure/Silverlight-based solution which enables City of Miami citizens report and track issues reported to city management. The system uses Bing Maps to plot the location and relevant information about each issue reported. Citizens now have the ability to easily see the status of the issue without having to call the city office. What I found interesting were a couple of benefits that a metropolitan area such as Miami can take advantage of in Windows Azure cloud-based solution. For the city of Miami, both benefits center around the weather. Of course the threat of a hurricane is a real issue in South Florida and what better way to make sure your site stays up during a hurricane then to have the site hosted far away from the eye of the storm. Using a Windows Azure cloud-based architecture the City of Miami is able to host the application within the Microsoft data centers safely away from any hurricane passing through South Florida. The second benefit is the inherent scalability of a Windows Azure based solution. During a severe weather event like thunderstorms or even worse, a hurricane, downed trees and power lines are a commonly reported problem. Being able to quickly scale up the computing resources required to handle the spike in citizens reporting these types of problems on the site is a huge benefit. Once the weather event has passed and downed tree reports begin to subside they can quickly reverse the process and scale the system back down to pre-storm levels. It’s kind of day-to-day kind of stuff but very cool stuff nonetheless. Have a day. :-|

• WiFi can't reconnect after suspend/hibernate on Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I've had this problem since Ubuntu 11.10 (my first install) but I was able to get around this issue with this answer. When I updated to Ubuntu 12.04 I encrypted the home folder, so I wasn't able to suspend or hibernate anymore (disappointing :l). Because of this and another issue I had1, I chose to reinstall. Sometime after I reinstalled, I was reminded about reconnection issue because it wasn't working after I suspended. I tried to use the same fix as before but I couldn't get it to work. I've also tried a couple other different fixes I found around the web but they didn't work. Since I'm new to linux, I'm gonna have a tough time figuring this out by myself. So does anyone know how, or what I need to figure out how, to fix this?
