• RAID strategy - 8 1TB drives

  I'm setting up a backup storage device- This machine has Windows Server 2008, on a separate boot drive. It has 8x 1TB drives, and uses a hardware RAID card. My question is, which RAID configuration should I go for? Initially, I was going to go with RAID 5 across all 8 drives, however members on serverFault have advised against it. I was just wondering why? Some people have suggested 2 lots of RAID 5 configuration on 4 of the drives, then striping them... I want to maximise the storage space, as this is a backup unit - will store SQL backups, Acronis Images, files, etc... It won't be for public access, so the I/O won't be that high I wouldn't think.

• Combine WLAN with LAN

  I have D-link DSL 2750U wireless router. My PC and notebook are connected to router by Wi-Fi. They can share files or ping each other. I have a network storage unit plugged into router by an ethernet cable. Any of the computers cannot reach that storage unit or ping it. I guess my router isolates LAN network from WLAN network. Is there a way to combine them and get the router treat all devices connected to router in a single network? Thanks.

  When virtualisation was new, we tried to virtualized everything. Then came the cases where the virtual machine was very much slower than a physical one. It boils down to the following ruleset (with us) when not to virtualize: Network-io-intesive applications (i.e. with many interrupts/packets) Disk-io-intensive (if not on SAN storage) RAM-intensive (this is the most precious resource) Now this is true for a combination of XEN using local DRBD storage. The same seems to be true for Hyper-V using DAS. I wonder - is it true for all combinations - and what are your limits on these combinations?

• New Kingson SSD drive fails after 1 week

  I upgraded the hard disk in my notebook to a 128GB Kingston SSD V100. Everything worked fine for about a week then out of the blue the notebook would not boot up any more. A black dos-like screen was shown with the options to try and boot normally or attempt to repair windows. Neither option would do anything. When I removed the drive and tested it in an external usb case no other computers are able to access the drive either. Is there anything I can try to fix it myself? The drive is partitioned into three drives and when it's connected through an external usb case to another computer I can see the partitions, just can't access anything on them. Does this mean the drive might be recoverable?

  I have a computer witch cannot be boot from CD or USB. I have Debian and Windows XP with dual boot via GRUB. Now I want to uninstall Debian and GRUB and restore the Windows MBR. I can enter boot Debian and Windows OSes, but no boot from CD or USB for recovery. How can I remove GRUb and restore MBR from within Windows XP or Debian? NOTE: I asked this question before, but after accepting the answer, I found that Windows XP does not have fdisk command. However, I think it is too late to continue the discussion there; thus, I asked this brand new question.

• How can I retrieve "remembered"(stored) wi-fi password from a win. 7 device?

  I have access to PC, and I am a standard user. Everything(incl. "show charecters" tickbox at wiriless menu) requires admin access. Now, that said machine is actually like a big tv with touch. Type-stuff is handled by virtual keyboard of windows. I can reach to c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces and can see-open files there, which is I assume where passwords stored are. Now the problem is that these passwords is encypted. I'm ok with if there is a way with changing/resetting admin password as well. Considering this device has nothing but massive amounts of usb(yep, not even cd-dvd // rw) the only way is from inside or with usb without admin rights.

• Best way to syn a file between 2 or more drives?

  I have a special file that I edit daily, it is somewhat like a large text file but a little more to it then that. I have a copy on my main desktop and a copy of the file on a USB drive as well. I would like a way to open up either file (from the USB drive or from my desktop drive) and be able to edit and save the file and have it stay updated on both drives. What is a lightweight and easy method of doing this? I do not need anything fancy

• Wired PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse do not work in 12.04 Live CD or after fresh 12.04 install - Foxconn D270S Atom Motherboard

  My Wired PS/2 keyboard and mouse do not work in 12.04, either in a fresh install or from the Live CD. A USB keyboard and mouse will work. The PS/2 keyboard and mouse will work using the same hardware and a fresh 10.04 Ubuntu install or a fresh Windows 7 install. The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. This problem is specific to this motherboard and Ubuntu 12.04. So far I've tried running in the fresh 12.04 install: sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade After the apt-get upgraded the first time, I now get to the point where there are 0 items to be upgraded. Rebooted and still no PS/2 keyboard/mouse. I've also tried adding the following lines to GRUB at boot time (the PS/2 keyboard works in GRUB) acpi=noirq acpi=off Neither setting made any difference. The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. Even more interestingly, 12.04 recognizes the same PS/2 keyboard and mouse on a separate Gigabyte AM3+ based motherboard. I only have this problem on this particular motherboard with Ubuntu 12.04. Any help would be appreciated. I bought this low-power motherboard specifically for the task of running Ubuntu 12.04 for the next five years... Update... I dug out an old PS/2 mouse that does not use a PS/2 to USB adapter but is directly wired for PS/2. Still no PS/2 keyboard or mouse after reboot. Again, I only have this problem with this motherboard and 12.04 Ubuntu. Other motherboards work fine with 12.04 and this motherboard works fine with 10.04. Update 2... I installed the 12.04 Server version. The text-based installer recognized the keyboard without issue, but after the first boot into the installed OS, the PS/2 keyboard would no longer respond. I tried installing Gnome on the Server install and the PS/2 mouse and keyboard don't work in Gnome either. I Opened bug #995570 for this issue

  I am looking for a free (as in beer) combination of services, for learning "cloud SW development" and very small scale private use (say, a private streamlined web shopping&todo list with simple auth). The combination should include the full set of needed services: DVCS service (like github) A cloud service to run the backend code A suitable data storage service (preferably not SQL), accessed by the backend (if not included in the backend service) A web service, serving the web pages seen by user, to access the backend functionality A "cloud IDE" (ideally one, two is ok too) for both backend and HTML/javascript coding If (backend) deployment uses some CI, then that Other points: Backend programming language can be anything, except VB or PHP Everything has to be in the cloud, nothing permanent on a local PC (graphics is not part of the question) Looking for ready-to-use service combination, not a virtual server where I can set anything up myself I don't care if service insists on displaying ads in the user web UI "Cheap" and "free trial" are ok too, if "free" does not exist As per example use case, storage, CPU and bandwidth quota requirements are negligible Google finds several services of course, all requiring at least registration before testing, so I'm looking for a known-good combination, so ideal answer starts with "I use this service combo: ...", contains links to services and brief description and personal experiences.

  Amazon S3 is an dead cheap cloud storage service that offers unlimited storage in pay as you use model. Recently we moved all the images and other static files(scripts & css) of Tech Dreams to Amazon S3 to reduce load on VPS server. Amazon S3 is cheap, but monthly bill will shoot up if images/static files of the blog are not cached properly (more details). By adding caching HTTP Headers Cache-Control or Expires to all the files hosted on Amazon S3 we reduced the monthly bills and also load time of blog pages. Lets see how to add custom headers to files stored on Amazon S3 service. Updating HTTP Headers of one file at a time The web interface of Amazon S3 Management console allows adding custom HTTP headers to one file at a time  through “Properties”  window (to access properties, right on a file and select Properties menu). So if you have to add headers to 100s of files then this is not the way to go! Updating HTTP Headers of multiple files of a folder recursively To update HTTP headers of multiple files in a folder recursively, we can use CloudBerry Explorer freeware or Bucket Explorer trail ware applications. CloudBerry is my favourite as it’s a freeware and also it’s has excellent interface to access Amazon S3 from desktops. Adding HTTP Headers with CloudBerry application is straight forward – right click on the required folders and choose the option “Set HTTP Headers”.   Tomorrow (Friday 23/4/2010) I am delivering a session at the Cloud Grid Exchange in London at SkillsMatter (A top training company and superb supporter of development communities). To be perfectly honest – I’m more interested in attending than presenting as the sessions and speaker line up look great. But in the middle of all that I will be doing the following (rather cheekily named) session: Looking at the Clouds through dirty Windows Many developers assume that the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform for Cloud Computing is only relevant if you develop solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. The reality is somewhat different. In the same way that developers can build great applications on Windows Server using a variety of programming languages, developers can do the same for Azure. Java, Tomcat, PHP, Ruby, Python, MySQL and more all work great on Azure. In this session we will take a lap around the services offered by the Azure PaaS and demonstrate just how easy it is to build and deploy applications built in .NET and other technologies. The session will be a mix of slides and demos – currently I plan to demo .NET and Ruby on Rails running on Azure – but I may flex that depending on how the morning sessions go and who turns up. • The C++ Standard Template Library as a BDB Database (part 1)

  If you've used C++ you undoubtedly have used the Standard Template Libraries. Designed for in-memory management of data and collections of data this is a core aspect of all C++ programs. Berkeley DB is a database library with a variety of APIs designed to ease development, one of those APIs extends and makes use of the STL for persistent, transactional data storage. dbstl is an STL standard compatible API for Berkeley DB. You can make use of Berkeley DB via this API as if you are using C++ STL classes, and still make full use of Berkeley DB features. Being an STL library backed by a database, there are some important and useful features that dbstl can provide, while the C++ STL library can't. The following are a few typical use cases to use the dbstl extensions to the C++ STL for data storage. When data exceeds available physical memory.Berkeley DB dbstl can vastly improve performance when managing a dataset which is larger than available memory. Performance suffers when the data can't reside in memory because the OS is forced to use virtual memory and swap pages of memory to disk. Switching to BDB's dbstl improves performance while allowing you to keep using STL containers. When you need concurrent access to C++ STL containers.Few existing C++ STL implementations support concurrent access (create/read/update/delete) within a container, at best you'll find support for accessing different containers of the same type concurrently. With the Berkeley DB dbstl implementation you can concurrently access your data from multiple threads or processes with confidence in the outcome. When your objects are your database.You want to have object persistence in your application, and store objects in a database, and use the objects across different runs of your application without having to translate them to/from SQL. The dbstl is capable of storing complicated objects, even those not located on a continous chunk of memory space, directly to disk without any unnecessary overhead. These are a few reasons why you should consider using Berkeley DB's C++ STL support for your embedded database application. • Not Playing Nice Together

  One of the things I’ve noticed is that two industry trends are not playing nice together, those trends being multi-core CPUs and massive hard drives.  It’s not a problem if you keep your cores busy with compute intensive work, but for software developers the beauty of multi-core CPUs (along with gobs of RAM and a 64 bit OS) is virtualization.  But when you have only one hard drive (who needs another when it holds 2 TB of data?) you wind up with a serious hard drive bottleneck.  A solid state drive would definitely help, and might even be a complete solution, but the cost is ridiculous.  Two TB of solid state storage will set you back around $7,000!  A spinning 2 TB drive is only $150. I see a couple of solutions for this.  One is the mainframe concept of near and far storage: put the stuff that will be heavily access on a solid state drive and the rest on a spinning drive.  Another solution is multiple spinning drives.  Instead of a single 2 TB drive, get four 500 GB drives.  In total, the four 500 GB drives will cost about $100 more than the single 2 TB drive.  You’ll need to be smart about what drive you place things on so that the load is spread evenly.  Another option, for better performance, would be four 10,000 RPM 300 GB drives, but that would cost about $800 more than the singe 2 TB drive and would deliver only 1.2 TB of space. • Ubuntu 12.04.1 Radeon 9550 stuck with 640x480, works in Geexbox

  I am a complete new user trying to set up Ubuntu on an old desktop. It has an AGP Radeon 9550 graphics card. I am running Ubuntu from a USB drive with persistence as the PC currently has no hard drive I seem to be stuck in 640*480 mode. The desktop itself is larger, but the monitor display is stuck on 640*480. In SettingsDisplays, only the 640*480 option is available. What I have found out so far: The proprietary ati drivers no longer support my card. If 3D isn't an issue (it's not) the open source driver should be fine. This should be installed by default so in theory I am using it already xserver-xconf/pci/*.ids doesn't show any entries for the card's PCI id. hardware additional drivers show no proprietary drivers I tried the booting into the current version of Geexbox from a USB stick and this set the resolution correctly by default so I know it can be done, but I know no idea how. How can I tell what driver the card is using, and how can I get the higher resolutions back?

• Ubuntu, User Accounts messed up

  I need to fix Ubuntu Accounts some how but don't really see how it could be done. The problem is: files /etc/passwd and /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts where changed. /etc/passwd After John:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash Befoure serg:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash /etc/hosts After 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 John-The-Rippe Befoure 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 serg-Protege /etc/hostname After John-The-Ripper Befoure serg-PORTEGE-Z835 I was trying to simply changed this files but can not do this because permission denied. When I'm trying to login as a root I got this message: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ sudo -s [sudo] password for John: John is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported The file sudoers is empty: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ vi /etc/sudoers When I type users in cp: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ users John John When I type id, I got this: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ id uid=1000(John) gid=1000(serg) groups=1000(serg) This doesn't work eather: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ usermod -l John serg usermod: user 'serg' does not exist John@John-The-Ripper:~$ adduser serg adduser: Only root may add a user or group to the system. ater. Then I tried to go to the GRUB menu and from there log in as a root. I did this, but however When I tryed to create user serg, It gave me an error that group already exist. When I tried to change /etc/passwd it said 'permission denied' And this doens't do the trick: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ visudo visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied Also The last thing I tried to do is to create a bootable USB and reinstall ubuntu, however I can not open USB-Creator because it asked me a root passwd. But it doesn't work. HELP ME PLEASE =)))

  The advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services Repository as a central storage for the metadata. SCA has been available since the release of the Oracle SOA Suite 11g. This technology combines and orchestrates several SOA components inside an SCA composite, making design, development, deployment, and maintenance easier. SCA development is metadata-driven, meaning that metadata artifacts, such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL), XML Schema Definition (XSD), XML, others, define the composite's behavior. With the increased number of composites and the dependencies among them, it became necessary to manage all the metadata in an adequate way. This article will address the advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services (MDS) repository as a central storage for the metadata. The MDS repository is a central part of the Oracle Fusion Middleware landscape, managing the metadata for several technologies, such as Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF), Oracle WebCenter, and the Oracle SOA Suite. This article is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of SCA and MDS. The second part describes some MDS tasks that help in the management of the SCA metadata files inside the repository. • Simple scan not working after upgrading to 12.10 (Xubuntu)

  Since upgrading to 12.10 (Xubuntu), Simple Scan is not working anymore. I got scanning working with Xsane, but only if Simple Scan has not run before. Otherwise I have to restart the printer/scanner (HP OfficeJet J5783).
