• How do I (or should I?) access the service layer from a SiteMesh template (views/layouts/main.gsp) in Grails?

  I need to create a toplist in the page footer on a site that I'm building. The footer is created in the default SiteMesh layout template (views/layouts/main.gsp). In order to create the toplist access to the database is needed, so I've encapsulated all logic needed for the toplist creation in a service class (services/FooService). Please note that while services are usually accessed from the controller layer, in this case the default layout template (views/layouts/main.gsp) is not generated from a controller. Can the layout view (views/layouts/main.gsp) access a service class? How? Is this the correct design decision? If not, what is a better encapsulation and how do I interact with said encapsulation from the layout view (views/layouts/main.gsp)?

• SQL Stored Procedure

  I am trying to run a stored procedure with a while loop in it using Aqua Data Studio 6.5 and as soon as the SP starts Aqua Data starts consuming an increasing amount of my CPU's memory which makes absolutely no sense to me because everything should be off on the Sybase server I am working with. I have commented out and tested every piece of the SP and narrowed the issue down to the while loop.   Hey all, I'm currently trying to create a Friendship domain object to link two User objects (with a bit of additional data: createDate, confirmedStatus). My domain model looks as follows class Friendship { User userOne User userTwo Boolean confirmed Date createDate Date lastModifiedDate static belongsTo = [userOne:User , userTwo:User] static constraints = { userOne() userTwo() confirmed() createDate() lastModifiedDate() } } I've also added the following entries to the user class static hasMany = [ friendships:Friendship ] static mappedBy = [ friendships:'userOne' , friendships:'userTwo' ] When I do this, the result is a new friendship created (and viewable through the controller) with both users listed in their respective places. When I view the details of userOne, I see the friedship listed. When I view the details of userTwo, no friendship is listed. This is not the behavior I expected. What am I doing incorrectly? Why can't I see the friendship listed under both users?

  Since i'm working with Titanium i realzed that its current JavaScript Interpreter doesn't accept specific coding-styles. So for for-loops and if-statements i have to have braces, even though i only want to span one line. Furthermore there is more i have to change if i want to use a Javascript Library like underscore.js. • How to Detect Trusted Connection in Crystal Reports using VB.NET?

  I have some Crystal Reports connecting to a Sql Server db that I would like to detect whether the connection is trusted or whether I need to supply the log on info (reports are not supplied by me so I can't control the connect method). If I just blindly supply login credentials, it won't connect if it is a trusted connection. The following does not work: oRpt = oCR.OpenReport("C:\MyReport.rpt") if oRpt.Database.Tables(1).ConnectionProperties.Item("Integrated Security") = True then 'trusted connection else 'supply login credentials end if It gives the following error: Operator '=' is not defined for type 'IConnectionProperty' and type 'Boolean'. • Django: How/Where to store a value for a session without unnecessary DB hits

  Hi all, I have an extended userprofile with AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE (ref: http://tinyurl.com/yhracqq) I would like to set a user.is_guru() method similar to user.is_active(). This would results for al views (or rather templates) to e.g. disable/enable certain user messages, displaying of widgets, etc. The boolean is stored in the extended user profile model, but I want to avoid hitting the DB for every view. So the questions is .. Do I use a context_processor, a template tag, session_dict or what have you to, possible cached, store this info for the duration of the users visit. Note: I dont have performance issues, so it's definitely filed under premature optimization. I just want to avoid generating extra work in the future :). Any pointers are very welcome.   My User entity class have several member variables (e.g. String firstName) which are persisted and some transient variables (e.g. transient boolean selected) which are not. I have used the transient variable to capture a checkbox selection, but invariably the value never gets set and procesed properly until I set another bean value along with it. i.e. If User has firstName (mapped to a text field) and selected (mapped to a checkbox) If I just selected the value doesn't seem to be set on an update If I had selected the checkbox and the firstName field, the "selected" value is captured properly Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

• Django ORM dealing with MySQL BIT(1) field

  In a Django application, I'm trying to access an existing MySQL database created with Hibernate (a Java ORM). I reverse engineered the model using: $ manage.py inspectdb > models.py This created a nice models file from the Database and many things were quite fine. But I can't find how to properly access boolean fields, which were mapped by Hibernate as columns of type BIT(1). The inspectdb script by default creates these fields in the model as TextField and adds a comment saying that it couldn't reliably obtain the field type. I changed these to BooleanField but it doesn't work (the model objects always fetch a value of true for these fields). Using IntegerField won't work as well (e.g. in the admin these fields show strange non-ascii characters). Any hints of doing this without changing the database? (I need the existing Hibernate mappings and Java application to still work with the database).

  I have a simple SEO task. There's a City model and a Brand model, and I have to create 1st-level URLs for both (e.g. site.com/honda and site.com/boston). What's the preferred routing/controller combination to do this in Rails? I can only think of map.connect '/:id', :controller => 'catchall', :action => 'index' class CatchallController < ApplicationController def index if City.exists?(:slug => params[:id]) @city = City.find_by_slug!(params[:id]) render 'cities/show' else @brand = Brand.find_by_slug!(params[:id]) render 'brands/show' end end end but it seems to be very un-Rails to put such logic into the controller. Later, the user deletes one of the contact entities that was a recipient of the message. Our application should delete the appropriate Contact entity, but we want to preserve the original recipient list for the message that was sent for the user's records. In essence, we want a snapshot of the message entity at the time it was sent. If we naively delete the contact entity, though, we lose snapshot integrity; if not, we are left with an invalid key.   I have a table in MySQL of contact information ; first name, last name, address, etc. I would like to run a query on this table that will return only rows with first and last name combinations which appear in the table more than once. I do not want to group the "duplicates" (which may only be duplicates of the first and last name, but not other information like address or birthdate) - I want to return all the "duplicate" rows so I can look over the results and determine if they are dupes or not. This seemed like it would be a simple thing to do, but it has not been. Every solution I can find either groups the dupes and gives me a count only (which is not useful for what I need to do with the results) or doesn't work at all. Is this kind of logic even possible in a query ? Should I try and do this in Python or something?

  I have two sets of drop downs for start date and end date. Each date is created by selecting a month, day, and year from 3 separate drop downs. I currently have RequiredFieldValidators on all the drop downs (which just shows a * if nothing has been selected yet), but I need to validate that the end date is greater than the start date. I can take care of the logic behind comparing the dates, but in terms of the validation method used, can someone help me out (I essentially need to validate 6 drop downs all at one time)? I tried a custom validation using client side javascript but couldn't get it to work. Can you even validate multiple drop downs using ASP.NET validation controls? (which is what I would like to do - I can always write the javascript, but was trying to stay away from this). Thanks.

  Hi Business logic is coded in pl/sql packages procedures and functions. Java programs call pl/sql packages procedures and functions to do database work. pl/sql programs store exceptions into Oracle tables whenever an exception is raised. How would my java programs get the exceptions since the exception instead of being propagated from pl/sql to java is getting persisted to a oracle table and the procs/functions just return 1 or 0. Sorry folks i should have added this constraint much earlier and avoided this confusion. As with many legacy projects we don't have the freedom to modify the stored procedures.

I'd rather not write this: return from s in db.Sites where idReviewer1 == idUser || idReviewer2 == idUser || idReviewer3 == idUser select s; Is there any way to put this functionality in one place, without resorting to SQL?
