• Samba Server needs to have AD authentication

  My Linux server is connected to AD via Bind DN and password (without domain joining). It is using sssd for authentication. I am able to ssh and login without any issue. I have a proper setup of uid and guid, etc. .. There is no issue with logging to the linux server. I want the samba service to use AD accounts, but I can't find documentation for how to configure it in this case. Can anyone explain how to configure samba to use active directory for authentication on a system using sssd?

• Probelm with ATI catalyst drivers in ubuntu 13.10

  Recently I've installed dual boot ubuntu 13.10 alongside windows 8. My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 15, with AMD Radeon HD 7670 Video Card. Without fglrx my battery is draining to 1:30 hrs from 3:30hrs (In Ubuntu 13.04 but very slow booting ) so I installed fglrx using What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)? But the problem is as you all know, Black Screen after logging into ubuntu. Tried so many solutions for this like reinstalling unity , ubuntu-desktop , compizconfig , etc.. but none helped except removing fglrx* completely. (But I need them very badly due to battery) Assuming that all hope is lost., Posting here as a final try.! Will be highly greatfull for those who helped :) PS : For those who think this question is a duplicate., Though the question may be a duplicate, but the answer is not! (so give me a assured solution for this problem before flagging this as duplicate., Kindly understand my frustation) Thank You !

• Session serialization in JavaEE environment

  Please consider the following scenario: We are working on a JavaEE project for which the scalability starts to become an issue. Up until now, we were able to scale up but this is no longer an option. Therefore we need to consider scaling out and preparing the App for a clustered environment. Our main concern right now is serializing the user sessions. Sadly, we did not consider from the beginning the issue and we are encountering the following excetion: java.io.WriteAbortedException: writing aborted; java.io.NotSerializableException: org.apache.catalina.session.StandardSessionFacade I did some research and this exception is thrown because there are objects stored on the session which does not implement the Serializable interface. Considering that all over the app there are quite a few custom objects which are stored on the session without implementing this interface, it would require a lot of tedious work and dedication to fix all these classes declaration. We will fix all this declarations but the main concern is that, in the future, there may be a developer which will add a non Serializable object on the session and break the session serialization & replication over multiple nodes. As a quick overview of the project, we are developing using a home grown framework based on Struts 1 with the Servlet 3.0 API. This means that at this point, we are using the standard session.getAttribute() and session.setAttribute() to work with the session and the session handling is scattered all over the code base. Besides updating the classes of the objects stored on session and making sure that they implement the Serializable interface, what other measures of precaution should we take in order to ensure a reliable Session replication capability on the Application layer? I know it is a little bit late to consider this but what would be the best practice in this case? Furthermore, are there any other issues we should consider regarding this transition? • Notebook overheating

  I'm asking this question because I've tried many tips to solve they don't work and it sounds like a non-fixed bug ubuntu. My problem is with overheating. I've recently installed Ubuntu Precise 12.04 LTS alongside with MS Windows 7 on my notebook Samsung 530U. I'm using both via dual-boot mode. I've no heating problem with MS Win 7 and the fan speed is normal even with long run utilization. However, when booting with Ubuntu and after short time, the PC got very hot and the fan was running at max speed. I installed a tool called Jupiter, I put it in "Power Saving" mode but no result. Now, I avoid using ubuntu because I fear it'll damage my all new notebook. Please can you give me a "FINAL" fix of this problem (lot of answers exist but I don't know the more accurate and efficient one). Thank you in advance.

Here's what happens: I select the CD from the rEFIt menu It loads for a while, then flashes up an aubergine screen with a very low-res picture of a human, an arrow and a keyboard It sits there for a while It changes to 80x25 console mode The screen then goes black, as if nothing is displaying to it All the while, the CD is churning away as if something is reading from it. • Set default owner/user

  I'm a web developer, and so have set-up an old machine in the office as an Ubuntu Server, for the purposes of testing websites. I've set-up LAMP and have created a /var/www folder, from which all my local sites are served. The issue is that of user permissions, i.e. any files that I copy into that folder (from my Windows machine via the network) automatically take on me (daniel) as their owner. The problem is that I want www-data to become the owner. I did some research and saw that it should be possible to use setuid (and setgid) to automatically set www-data as the owner of all files put into /var/www automatically, so far I've not had any luck making it work. Can someone help please? Thank you UPDATE: Would this do what I want it to do? Default file permissions for php user www-data UPDATE 2: I've kinda fixed my issue by changing my samba settings. Using Webmin, I was able to go in and change the default settings (as seen here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/521/captureon.png/)

• What features are helpful when performing remote debugging / diagnostics?

  Obviously, the easiest way to solve a bug is to be able to reproduce it in-house. However, sometimes that is not practical. For starters, users are often not very good at providing you with useful information. Customer Service: "what seems to be the issue?" User: "It crashed!" To further compound that, sometimes the bug only occurs under certain environmentally conditions that can not be adequately replicated in-house. With that in mind, it is important to build some sort of diagnostic framework into your product. What types of built-in diagnostic tools have you used or seen used? Logging seems to be the predominate method, which makes sense. We have a fairly sophisticated logging frame work in place with different levels of verbosity and the ability to filter on specific modules (actually we can filter down to the granularity of a single file). Error logs are placed strategically to manufacture a pretty good representation of a stack trace when an error occurs. We don't have the luxury of 10 million terabytes of disk space since I work on embedded platforms, so we have two ways of getting them off the system: a serial port and a syslog server. However, an issue we run into sometimes is actually getting the user to turn the logs on. Our current framework often requires some user interaction.

  This isnt a firewall issue, I can telnet to gmail with no problems, but all browsers (chrome, IE, firefox) return a This web page is not available. error when tring to access it through the browser. I can access the same pages, using the same browsers, on the same machine, but through a different user account with no problem. What the hell is going on? Help appreciated. Edit: This is definitely a windows setup issue - I have just created a new admin account and can access https with problems. This is seriously infuriating.

  Hi, I try to apply flattened css to xhtml (which get from websites). I am using css4j-0.12.1.jar (from http://www.informatica.info/projects/css/) to process the url html content. For a few urls the code seems to be hang. Even no exception is thrown. For a particular stylableelement or style code doesnot return any value and hangs. For a few websites code hang in, CSSStyleDeclaration.getPropertyValue(style); and for a few websites code hang in, CSSStylableElement.getComputedStyle(); I am using the latest jar. Could you please update me, is there any known issue or fix for this. I am not sure where to post this issue. If anyone knows please update me. Thanks in Advance.

• Can't boot from liveUSB when trying to install it alongside Windows 7

I want to install 12.04 from bootable usb flash alongside Windows 7 (also tried live CD but not working) but computer is not booting from USB flash or LIVE-CD and boots windows 7 (Acer Aspire 4750g) and of course I have set the BIOS priority in the right way. There is one important point to tell that I have installed Fedora 16 on my laptop successfully and now I have it on my system. When I was trying to install Fedora I got some error and searched about it and got this point that I should delete a .efi file and then installation went right. In this case , what should I do to solve the problem? (I also don't need my Fedora anymore).

• How can I change exim's DKIM and SPF for emails sent?

  I've now spent 2 hours trying to figure out this issue and I am about to give up and go to bed. I've been having issues with Gmail rejecting emails from my VPS server because of false spam alerts (probably caused by lfd sending too many emails). So I changed my Exim config to send emails from a different IP (my VPS comes with 3) and that fixed the issue. I also enabled DKIM and SPF on my domains for added measure. But now, all my emails appear as ("From: Sender Name via server.domain1.com") where server.domain1.com is my VPS hostname. I previously had the same issue in Outlook and turning off "Set SMTP Sender: headers" solved that problem. But I believe adding the DKIM and SPF now makes Gmail add "via server.domain1.com" to my messages. How do I fix this? • Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). • How to get Unity working on dual gpu laptop?

  I recently bought a new laptop (Asus X53S series) that has two GPUs, an NVidia GeForce GT 540M and an integrated Intel GPU (I believe it's called Intel HD graphics 3000). I installed the recommended restricted NVidia drivers after a clean Ubuntu 11.10 install. In the 'additional drivers' program I get the message: "This driver is enabled and in use", although when I try to open the NVidia X Server Settings it says "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver." which seems to be the case since Ubuntu only starts using Unity 2D. I've had the same issue in 11.04 and I was forced to use the nouveau driver just to get unity working, but since I get quite a few crashes with it I really want to get the propriety driver working this time around. Since I've never had this issue with older laptops, I can only assume it is caused due to the dual gpu configuration. How do I get Ubuntu to use the propriety drivers, or is there any workaround to get the integrated Intel GPU to be ignored by Ubuntu? Alternatively, has anyone got Unity working with a similar setup?

• How can I get wireless working on an HP-Mini 110-3150?

  I just got an HP Mini 110-3150, and booting from an external hard disk with Ubuntu 10.10 works all fine, except that there is no wireless detected. I noticed that the Wireless indicator is red under Ubuntu, but is enabled under whatever Windows 7 I got on it. So, I understand that it may not get detected at all by Ubuntu at startup time, and there is no manual switch that I can simply slide to turn on/off. How can I get the Wireless device turned ON by default at startup time, and is there any special driver I need to install (proprietary or not) to get it working ? Merci :-) Update: When actually installing on the computer, as a new install, the NIC is not detected at first, but upon restarting, I get a notification of a closed driver available for the wireless. Once installed, updated and restarted, it works fine.

• USB Wireless keyboards not registering Ctrl Alt Delete when computer boots

  I've recently installed a new PC at work. Its a Dell Optiplex 9010. I bought a USB wireless keyboard and mouse from Dell and subsequently from Logitech to use with this PC. The Dell keyboard is a model KM632 and the logitech is an mk260. Both units work properly and have decent range. The issue is when the PC boots they keyboard (neither model) will register a Ctrl+Alt+Delete to the PC. I can say for sure the keyboards are still functional as the media keys will still produce a result (notably the sleep key on the mk260). My gut reaction is I'm dealing with an issue in the PC or Windows. I'm not sure where to start though. If I unplug and reinsert the USB dongle both units will work. Also, I don't use both they keyboards at the same time I bought the Logitech fearing the Dell unit was bad. Any ideas would be appreciated.

• Windows scheduler - Tasks not running when user not logged in

  I have Windows Server 2003, with schedules setup via Remote Desktop under one account. That account appears in the 'creator' column too. I have 'Run only if logged on' unticked. When I have logged in under that account and then 'disconnected' leaving the the session alive, the schedule runs. But every time the server is rebooted, the task again fails to run until I again log in and disconnect. Any KB fixes I've missed or issues I've overlooked? Normally I only discover the issue when a user tells me the schedule has stopped running so it's a real reliability issue. I'd also be happy with an answer suggesting an alternative scheduler with higher reliability. Thanks

• Purple start screen - no splash screen

  After installing Ubuntu 11.10 on a new computer everything worked fine for a few weeks and now suddenly when starting up Ubuntu I get a blank purple screen with no "ubuntu" splash and the 5 dots but the system does start up. What has happened to loose the ubuntu splash screen? Also, I've checked in the grub startup and it has "quiet splash" in the linux line. I have an ATI radeon 5450 graphics card which needed nomodeset to be added to the grub line when booting for the first time off the install CD but now this line has disappeared from the grub startup. Can anyone help. Thanks

  I have an overheating issue on my netbook (ASUS EeePC 1015PW), which I'm trying to troubleshoot. Using lm-sensors while overheating gave me this output : acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +86.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) eeepc-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter fan1: 4089 RPM coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +82.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +80.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) But I can't hear the fan. So I enabled manual pwm controling and set the fan to full speed, and after a few minutes I got this output : acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +65.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) eeepc-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter fan1: 4016 RPM coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +62.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +58.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) And this time I could hear the fan spinning. So there's quite obviously an issue with either fan control or fan monitoring. Hence the question : what kind of physical information does the fan sensor really report? Thank you PS. I should have added that the computer is a small, hard-to-disassemble netbook, so I can't and don't want to try experiments like "block the fan and see what the sensor reports".

• Switching to Kubuntu results in low graphics mode

  I looked at some screen shots of Kubuntu and I liked it so I went to Synaptic and installed the kubuntu-desktop package and set my desktop window manager to kde and rebooted. After reboot, I saw Kubuntu splash screen then this message; running in Low Graphical Mode. Then I was not able to dismiss the message because my mouse did not work Seemingly How to Geek had the same problem http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/install-kde-kubuntu-on-ubuntu/ . You will probably see that your xorg.conf file was backed up to xorg.conf.1 during the ?KDE / Kubuntu installation. Just copy the xorg.conf.1 back to xorg.conf, reboot, and everything should be fine. I also tried to do that by booting into recovery mode and then droping onto the shell. But it would not let me rename, came up with some error.

• Partitions are gone after installing ubuntu 13.10

  I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 today. I selected it to overwrite my windows 7 operating system. However, after booting up Ubuntu I saw that my partitions are gone and all the space is showing up us in one partition. Why is this happening? Have I done something wrong while choosing to overwrite windows 7? I understand that while overwriting windows 7 it will format my C: drive there, but why my other partitions are gone? Is there any way that I can get my data back?

• XNA Windows Resolution / Mouse Position Bug

  In XNA, when in windowed mode and resolution (set via PreferredBackBufferWidth/Height) is close to the resolution of the display, the view is distorted (zoomed in a bit)and the mouse coordinates are wrong. Here is what it looks like when I draw a bunch of lines to the screen. (Normal, Error on my ASUS Notebook G73Jh, Error on my EEE PC 1001P) In the top left of the screen the mouse position is correct, but the further you get away the more out of sync it becomes. Here are some images of the mouse in different positions and the game drawing a circle underneath where it thinks the mouse is. (Top Left, Bottom Right) If you shrink the resolution by a couple pixels then it goes back to working like normal, my first though at a fix was to limit the max resolution to a little smaller than the display resolution. I figured out the maximum resolution that works in a couple different modes, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern that would allow me to determine it based off the display resolution. Computer | Screen Resolution | Max Error-Free | Difference ASUS Notebook G73Jh | 1920x1080 | 1924x1059 | +4x-21 ASUS Notebook G73Jh | 1024x600 | 1018x568 | -6x-32 EEE PC 1001P | 1024x600 | 1020x574 | -4x-26 Because the differences don't form a pattern I can't hack in a solution, the one even has +4 which baffles me. Here is a project that demonstrates the problem, just set the resolution to the resolution of your display. Any ideas on how I might fix this issue? As an insteresting aside, I tried to use FRAPS to capture a video of the issue but fraps actually records without distortion or mouse offset.
