• Dual Boot 10.10 and 11.04 can't boot into 10.10 after an update.

  I've been dual booting my system with Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) and 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) but today after an update, I can't boot into 10.10, there's only option to boot into 11.04 and Grub also looks a bit different. Before this update, I used to see first option for 11.04 and an other option called /dev/sda1 for 10.10 but now there is a new option called Previous Linux Versions, but when I Enter into that menu, there is no option to boot into 10.10 all the options take me to 11.04 now it looks like this... And when I click on Previous Linux Versions...

• VMware Server guest systems are extremely slow with IO load on host (Ubuntu 8.04)

  We are experiencing performance issues with a VMware Server 2.x installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 host. When the host system is generating IO load (for example, copying large files as part of a backup operation), the guests (also Ubuntu 8.04) become extremely unresponsive and slow (simple Apache HTTP requests taking 5 seconds instead of the usual 200ms). We tried optimizing various aspects of the VMs, but the issue remains. Is there a known bug with VMware performance under linux if host IO load is high? Is there a way to fix this? Is this only an issue with Ubuntu systems, or have you seen it on other systems before? Thanks!

• Boot-up hangs unless I manually select the kernel in the bootloader

  In my stock Ubuntu install (forgot which critter its named for, about one year old), I am able to boot up normally only if I manually select the kernel in the bootloader (Grub). If I step away and it boots from the default, the system will hang with the word "Ubuntu" on a graphics screen and a few white/red blinking dots beneath it. umb@digdug:~$ uname -a Linux digdug 2.6.32-42-generic #95-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 25 15:57:54 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux Synaptics says I have 'grub-pc' version 1.98-1ubuntu-13 installed. My grub.cfg does have default="0" which I would expect to make the default be the first kernel shown in the selection screen. The system is a laptop with an i7 processor, and I have had trouble with some kernels not being able to boot at all in the past, and power management is not working perfectly, but I have not had problems booting the latest kernel (2.6.32-42) if I select it manually in Grub. Any idea what is going on here and how can I fix it so that I can re-boot unattended?

  About three days ago, I noticed the exim mailqueue started filling up on one of my servers, and upon inspecting some of the emails using # exim -Mvb $ID, I noticed they were being sent to some system email address (which is not a real address), and the body of the messages were as follows: (process:8259): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text() I'm wondering what could be causing this strange issue, as I've never heard of 'pango' at all... I've never seen that function used in my lifetime! It seems the process id (PID) is for an apache process, though, as the pids are always gone by the time I use # ps -aux to look them up. • Unity3d web player fails to load textures

  I'm having a problem with Unity3d Web Player. I have developed a project and succesfully deployed it in a web app. It works with absolutely no problem on my PC. This app is to be installed on two identical machines. I have installed them in both and it only works properly in one. The issue I have is on a computer it fails to properly load the models and textures, so the game runs but instead of the models I can only see black rectangles on a blue background. It has the same problem with all browsers and I get no errors either by the player or by JavaScript. The only difference between these computers is that one that has the problem is running on Windows 8.1 and the other one on Windows 8 only. Could this be the cause of the issue? It works fine on my computer with Windows 8.1. However both of the other computers have specs that are significantly lower than mine. I have already searched everywhere and it seems that it has to do with the individual games, however I think it may have to do with the computer itself because it runs properly in the other two. The specs on the computes I'm installing the app on are as follows: Intel Celeron 1.40 GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics If anybody could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful I forgot to mention, I'm running Unity Web player 4.3.5 and the version on the other two computers is 4.5.0

• Internet Explorer 10 auto-correct randomly capitalises words

  I use Internet Explorer 10 on my Windows 7 laptop (because the fingerprint browser add-on only works in IE). I have noticed that IE 10 has a built-in spellchecker, which is great. Now, I write about 90 % English and 10 % Swedish on web sites, so it is somewhat unfortunate that it isn't possible to change the spell-checker language 'on-the-fly'. But that's a minor issue. The main problem is that, when I write English comments, the spell-checker (apparently randomly) capitalises some Words. For instance, the 'words' of the previous sentence was changed automatically to 'Words'. Another Word that is Always capitalised is Before. (Yes, the Three Words that are incorrectly capitalised in the previous sentence are due to the auto-correct 'feature', and apparently 'three' is also a problematic word.) Is this really something that happens to every (bilingual) user? Is there any way to fix the issue (preferably without disabling the spell-checker altogether)?

• Monitor turns off about 1 second after turning it on

  Hi all! I have a hardware issue with some of the LCD monitors we have in our office. My problems is not related to video cards or anything else with the computer itself. I have 2 Dell 17" LCD screens that goes off (blank) after 1 or 2 seconds. The light remains green so it's not idling or sleeping. Just this morning, I had to replace one that goes off on 2 workstations and also on my laptop. Nothing to do with it. I tried the VGA and DVI connection w/out luck. I strongly think that this is something with a capacitor or something inside the screen but I can't figure out what it is... Is anybody heard of that kind of issue before? Regards, David.

• Hidden characters inserted after pipe (|) followed by a space

  Very often, on my Mac, when I use the pipe (|) character followed by a space character, an invincible character will be inserted in between. This is especially annoying when using the terminal, as it makes commands invalid. If I type the following in iterm2, I often get the following: ls | cat zsh: command not found:  cat If I hit the up-arrow-key to get my previous command, and then remove and reinsert the space between | and cat, the command will work. When I copy paste the working and non working commands into a file, like this: non-working: ls | cat working: ls | cat and open it in Hex Fiend it shows the following: non-working: ls |¬†cat working: ls | cat I've also experienced the same kind of issue in SublimeText2 using the square brackets ([]) followed by a space. So I don't believe its an issue with iTerm2.

• Slow Starting DHCP Client Service - HP Thin Clients

  We have recently began adding XPe thin clients to our domain in preperation for a new citrix environment. One thing that has been picked up on in testing is that they appear slow to boot. The issue manifest's it's self as the classic "Applying Computer Settings..." screen we are all used to seeing. After digging into the issue it appears the DHCP Client service is taking some time to load on boot, this varies but I would estimate it can take around 1 minute in some cases. I've eliminated the classic issues, DHCP is responding correctly and in quick time. DNS is not the cause and GPO's are applying promptly. A simple workaround is to assign the client a static IP which work's great so the TCP/IP servies are obviously firing up quickly, just not DHCP Client. Does anyone have any idea's on how I may be able to improve the service start time? Keen to find a better solution before I get my arm twisted into setting up 250 thin clients with static addressing!

• "This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Word previewer."

  The issue is: Outlook 2013 simply will not give a preview of Word (nor Excel) docs in attachments. Never had the issue with Outlook 2010. Using Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 64bit SSD with Word 2010. I did notice that "Microsoft Word" is not listed specifically in Trust Center attachment handling, could that be part of the problem? Excel, Visio, RTF and many more are there. Update: strange, search can be performed in Word attachments... but can't preview Word file. So, Outlook can 'see' Word docs but won't let us have that preview. • Unable to connect to wireless network

  A real newbie here. Just downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, put on USB stick and have booted it on my other PC after modifying the boot sequence to boot from USB before hard drive where Windows XP lives. Have no problems with Windows and my wireless but not with Ubuntu. The PC is a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. According to Windows XP , the wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, my IP address is 192.168.0.193, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, assigned by DHCP, SSID is HOME , type 802.11 and default gateway is 192.168.0.1. Ok, back to booting from USB and TRY option, I am Editing Network connections, I have created/configured "Wireless connection 1" with SSID of HOME and the only other thing I have changed is on the "Editing IPV4 routes for Wireless connection 1 I have enterred 192.168.0.193 , netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 Anyways , no go. • Live programming help

  This idea has been floating around my head for a few years. I started some work on it but I just want to know if it is feasible, sensible, or if there is something else like it out there. Dont want to know I was wasting time on a solved issue. Whenever I have a programming issue, this is my sequence: Google it!: That usually brings up a lot of things: blogs, forums, stackoverflow, stackexchange, and even the official docs of the language/framework/cms. Ask on IRC: I format my question and try to get people on IRC to help me. Make a post: I create a post on forums/stackoverflow/stackexchange or shout on twitter with hashtags. Now a lot of the time I am in the middle of a project with a deadline. So I want answers NOW!!! Sometimes just 5-15 minutes worth of attention. Usually by the time I am failing at getting answers at #2, I am imagining how many people are ONLINE NOW with the skill and my exact answer but playing video games, watching youtube or idling online. However, if they were motivated, they would invest the 15 mintes helping me, that would make a world of a difference. I am even in positions where I would PAY for that 15 minutes of instant help. If your rate is as much as $100/hour (relatively good programmer) that is $25 that might save me 3 hours. This help would be live, text chat/skype/phone/screenshare. Should I continue developing this idea or is there a better alternative out there? Or is this even an unfeasible idea?

• Is DevCon.exe still the best way to restart/power cycle USB ports after resuming from hibernation in

  I have a USB broadband card on my Windows 7 laptop. It loathes resuming from hibernation properly. Back in the XP days I would issue a call devcon.exe from the command prompt and restart the selected ports (Saves you having to manually unplug and plug back in your USB devices). Ive been trying this is Windows 7, but the UAC keeps getting in the way. I'll start a command prompt. Issue the devcon command, but UAC asks me if I really want to do this, when I click yes it opens a different command prompt and launches the command. After the command completed this new prompt window closes faster than the speed of light and I cannot see the results. So Im thinking there has to be a better way to do this in the Vista/Win7 world...?

• How can i get my KVM switch to work? (win7 & ubuntu 10.10)

  i bought a KVM switch and i'm trying to use it to have it connected to my main PC (win7) and my new machine i just installed ubuntu on. I hooked it up properly, and tried using it. It worked when switching from the win7 machine to the ubuntu one, but after the (1st and only) successful switch, ubuntu just didn't seem to recognize my mouse or keyboard. Basically when i tried it the easiest was to explain what happened was it only worked with Win7. When i switched over to ubuntu by doing a [scroll-lock] [scroll-lock], my keyboard and mouse were not recognized. However, the lights on the keyboard and mouse did work when on ubuntu, but they didn't function, and since keyboard wouldn't function, i couldn't do a [scroll-lock] [scroll-lock] to switch back to the win7 machine. So i was basically locked in to ubuntu with no mouse or keyboard, and i had to unplug the keyboard/mouse usb's and d-sub to plug the monitor d-sub back into win7 computer to type up this thread and google the issue. Seems some people have had this issue before but i couldn't find a fix... I am 80% sure it has to do with drivers... but there isn't any for KVM switches, at least not this one also i never was unable to find ubuntu drivers/firmware for my mouse and keyboard (Logitech G15 and Razer Deathadder 3500). I don't know how to fix this, perhaps someone super-savvy could write/code a script or work-around or something? I really need to get this thing working, my back is getting sore from bending over and plugging in / unplugging usb/monitor/usb/monitor/usb/usb over and over again lol... and i really would be sad if the constant plugging unplugging of the usb's or the d-sub port would over time damage the ports... i don't want that... There has to be some way to get this working.. Can anyone help? The KVM is a IOGEAR GCS632U Win7 x64 Ubuntu 10.10

• Android: how do I switch between game scenes in a game? Any tutorials?

  I am trying to create a simple game using the Android SDK without using AndEngine (or any other game engine). I have plenty of experience designing games from the past, but I'm having lots of trouble trying to use the Android SDK to make my game. By far my biggest hurdle right now is switching between views. That is, for example, going from the menu to the first level, etc. I am using a traditional model I learned (I think it's called a scene stack or something?) in which you push the current scene onto a stack and the game's main loop runs the top item of the stack. This model seems non-trivial to implement in the Android SDK, mostly because Android seems to be picky about which thread instantiates which view. My issue is that I want the first level to show up when you press a button on the main menu, but when I instantiate the first level (the level class extends SurfaceView and implements SurfaceHolder.Callback) I get a runtime error complaining that the thread that runs the main menu can't instantiate this class. Something about calling Looper.prepare(). I figured at this point I was probably doing things wrong. I'm not sure how to specifically phrase my issue into a question, so maybe I should leave it as either 1) Does anybody know a good way (or the 'proper' way) to switch between scenes in an Android game? or 2) Are there any tutorials out there which show how to create a game that doesn't take place entirely in one scene? (I have googled for a while to no avail... maybe someone else knows of one?) Thanks!

• Computer refuses to boot either ubuntu disk I'm using

  I'm attempting to set up an Amahi server, and thus have taken an older PC and wiped it clean using DBAN. I'm now in the process of installing Ubuntu, but for some reason the computer refuses to recognize either form of Ubuntu I throw at it, even though it recognizes the Windows XP CD fine. Things it can't be: Boot order - I've tripple checked A bad DVD - I've booted the live CD off of my Mac just fine. A drive issue - the drive boots other cd's just fine, I've tested both an XP and the ultimate boot disk for windows... they are booting fine. A drive conflict - I have unplugged the only hard drive, leaving the DVD drive alone, still no recognition. I've tried both Ubuntu 12 and an older Ubuntu 10 CD, it refuses to recognize either one. It's like my computer has decided it will have nothing to do with Ubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How can I make a vpn network login the default behavior for logging into Windows?

  To login to the machine, I have to login to our domain. When I am at work, the unauthenticated wireless permits access to the domain. However, the internet is not available until I connect via the vpn. From home, I have to connect via the vpn first, then I can login to the domain. I have successfully setup a network logon with the vpn (following the directions found here). And for the most part it works correctly. (There is an issue with logout/login I haven't figured out just yet). As I currently have to Switch User and select the Network Login button, I'd like to know if it is possible to have the network login the default behavior when logging into the system. This is mostly a usability issue than anything else.

• Grub Rescue Error: Unknown Filesystem

  I was trying to dual boot Windows with Linux (linux installed first). I read that it was easier to do so if windows was installed first. So I tried to install windows, by creating a partition for it. There wasn't enough room on the drive so I tried changing the filesystem of my existing partition to support windows. Now whenever I try to start my computer I get the grub rescue screen. I've tried booting from CD and USB with ubuntu and also with windows, but nothing happens. I ran ls in grub rescue and got hd0, (hd0,msdos5), cd (with an install disc inserted), fd0, and fd1. However if I run ls on any of these I receive the error: unknown filesystem. Can anyone help me out?

• Lenovo Y460 heats up with Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm new with Ubuntu and I'm enjoying my experience with Ubuntu 11.10 on my Lenovo ideapad Y460. I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 bit. It's great using Ubuntu, however I noticed that my laptop heats up rather quickly when I use Ubuntu. Does this have to do with drivers? I have Nvidia GT 425M graphics, but I don't know if this information is relevant. My fans are just not working right as they do in Windows 7. • How to completely remove wicd from 12.04?

  I had issues with WiFi so I removed Network Manager. I booted Windows OS (dual booting Windows 7 and 12.04) to download wicd 1.7.2.4. Extracted it and installed. However, wcid worked properly with Wired Connection but could not connect to WiFi. So, I re-installed Network Manager which works properly now, and wicd connects to WiFi too. As soon as I disconnect from Network Manager, wicd connects only to wired. At this point, I wanted to remove wicd but apt-get returns no wicd installed, can't see it in Synaptic or Software Center, but only in Applications list under Dash home. Of course wcid icon shows connections, and resulting connected, so my system shows both applets for wicd and network manager in the top panel. When running dpkg commands, wicd is not listed as installed package. Any suggestion how to remove wicd? Consider that I started with Ubuntu just few months ago so my knowledge base is limited.

• apache server mapping to tomcat issues

  I am working on the flex application. Back end is spring/Hibernate. The application is working fine in my local XP system. When i am trying to deploy in the server i'm facing the issue. The issue is how to map the java in apache when i am by passing the apache & works in tomcat my application is working good. But not in the apache.. This can be fixed by mapping the java in apache. • cannot boot Ubuntu after removing packages?

  I have problem now with booting into Ubuntu because I removed some packages from package manager and its dependencies by mistake. After I saw desktop removing applications one by one and the theme starting to disappear. After I tried to restart the login, I tried to fix it usinh recovery mode but it's not working. I am sure there are important packages removed, the problem is that I have no backup for my files .. Also, I need my firefox stored passwords. , I tried to boot to Ubuntu live CD but files encrypted in home folder and no access to it !! is there away to access it ?

• MAAS fails to Commission nodes

  I'm evaluating MaaS/Juju. I followed instructions in this link http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html to setup MaaS. I'm running this in Oracle VirtualBox environment so Power options are not configured for the VMs. PXE booting VM works fine. The node shuts down itself and registers with MaaS in Declared state. Issues: a) When I Commission the VM (which is in the Declared state), first it gets IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up errors. (See link below for a screenshot). b) Fails to mount the boot device and drops into initramfs prompt.   The Jan/Feb Java Magazine will go out next week. It's full of great Java stories, interviews and technical articles. It also includes a Fix This section; the idea of this section is challenging a Java developer's coding skills. It's a multiple-choice brainteaser that includes code and possible answers. The answer is provided in the next issue. For an example, check out Fix This in the Java Magazine premier issue. We are looking for community submissions to Fix This. Do you have a good code brain teaser? Remember, you want tease your fellow devs, not stump them completely! If you have a submission, here's what you do:  1. State the problem, including a short summary of the tool/technique, in about 75 words. 2. Send us the code snippet, with a short set-up so readers know what they are looking at (such as, "Consider the following piece of code to have database access within a Servlet.") 3. Provide four multiple-choice answers to the question, "What's the fix?" 4. Give us the answer, along with a brief explanation of why. 5.
