• Should I Learn C/C++ Even If I Just Want To Do Web Programming?

  My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming. Only then move to PHP/MySQL/HTTP and start working on practical programming projects. Path 2 Start directly with PHP/MySQL/HTTP and getting my hands dirty with practical projects right away. What would you guys recommend?

  I think Nautilus is so slow, and I'd like to move to PCmanFM, but didn't find any good tips how to do this in Ubuntu 12.10. • Moving the jBullet collision body to with the player object

  I am trying to update the location of the rigid body for a player class, as my player moves around I would like the collision body to also move with the player object (currently represented as a cube). Below is my current update method for when I want to update the xyz coords, but I am pretty sure I am not able to update the origin coords? : public void Update(float pX, float pY, float pZ) { posX = pX; posY = pY; posZ = pZ; //update the playerCube transform for the rigid body cubeTransform.origin.x = posX; cubeTransform.origin.y = posY; cubeTransform.origin.z = posZ; cubeRigidBody.getMotionState().setWorldTransform(cubeTransform); processTransformMatrix(cubeTransform); } I do not have rotation updated, as I do not actually want/need the player body to rotate at all currently. • How to set up an ethernet and wireless network using /etc/network/interfaces?

  Hi. Currently I have ethernet and wireless networks configured through a network manager (further NM) but it seems to be a bit buggy (I need a different MAC for ether which is never applied if using NM), so I would like to move all the network configs to interfaces file. I know (or can google for) configuration code, but I'm not sure how NM works and it looks like it overrides interface config. Please advice, how I can handle this issue. NOTE: I also would like to be able to locate and connect to various wireless networks but not sure how to do it.

• Are there references discussing the use parallel programming as a development methodology? [closed]

  I work on a team which employs many of the extreme programming practices. We've gone to great lengths to utilize paired programming as much as possible. Unfortunately the practice sometimes breaks down and becomes ineffective. In looking for ways to tweak our process I came across two articles describing parallel pair programming: Parallel Pair Programming Death of paired programming. Its 2008 move on to parallel pairing While these are good resources I wanted to read a bit more on the topic. As you can imagine Googling for variations on parallel pair programming nets mostly results which relate to parallel programming. What I'm after is additional discussion on the topic of parallel pair programming. Do additional references exist that my Google-fu is unable to discern? Has anyone used the practice and care to share here (thus creating a reference)?

• Using AWS or Azure, what to do about emails?

  I'm coming from a background of paying a hosting company X amount per month for a server. This server comes with IIS, WebsitePanel and Smartermail all bundled together. When I create a new domain using WebsitePanel it automatically creates my email account. All I then need to do is configure my DNS to point to the server. I've decided that it is more cost efficient to move to AWS / Azure. Has anyone come from a similar background and moved onto a cloud system? I'd be interested to know what you did regarding emails. So far, these are the suggestions I've seen: Use Google Apps for each domain Use something like Elastic Email to sent out emails Launch a new instance and host an email server on that The first option seems like quite a lot of manual configuration, the second one works good with outgoing emails but what about receiving? Option 3 would make it less cost effective. What is your experience?

• Pros and Cons of Session Replication

  Do I really need Session Replication? I am working on a number of web projects for a firm. Most of the projects are about one or two pages of input and then doing a save to a mysql database. Very Basic projects. My SA's are pushing to try to get session replication working in JBoss but I don't really see any need for it and all of its overhead. We need load balancing and clustering so if the server does go down we can move the new requests to the backup service but I am not to big in session replication. This is very low volume projects. In my eyes what is the odds of a user being in the project as the server goes down on the one or two pages. I need to convince the SAs that session replication is an un-necessary complication in this instance. I am looking for pros and cons of session replication so that I can better structure my argument.

• Does distributing non-GPLd assets with a GPL application violate the license?

  This is somewhat related to my other question, but is actually different. I would like to license a Windows Phone application under the GPL. All other Windows Phone Marketplace issues aside (I'll ask those on the forums), I'd like to include icons that ship with the SDK in my application. While this is common practice (documentation points to the icons' location), I'm not sure if I'd be forcing GPL on the icons (a move expressly forbidden by the Application Provider Agreement). How is this usually handled in GPL or am I simply out of luck?

• Feedburner is Displaying an Inactive Email Address When Logged In

  I have set up a Feedburner subscription through my Google account login. For some reason Feedburner displays an old inactive email address in the top right when logged into Feedburner. I'm concerned since I don't have access to this email account. If for any reason I need to move my Feedburner Feed I'm concerned I'll need to access this email account which is impossible. My email address is correct in every other Google account, profile etc. and has been updated to a working and correct email address. How can I change this? Do I need to be concerned?

• Catalyst forgets monitor settings after reboot or log out in 12.10

  I have a Samsung monitor connected to my ATI Radeon graphic card via HDMI. By default the screen has a black border around, but I can disable it in the Catalyst menu to get full screen. (There is a scalebar that I have to set to the highest value.) My problem is that every time I turn off and on my computer it changes back and I have to set it up again. It is really annoying. Is there any way to make this setting permanent? Notes: 1. I open Catalyst with admin rights. 2. When I open the Catalyst settings menu, it looks like that it keeps my settings, because the scalebar stays at the highest point, but still it doesn't scale up my screen until I move back and forth the scale bar to the same point

• Chromium web-app creation doesn't work in 12.10?

  If you create an application of a website in Chromium and choose "desktop", a .desktop file is created. In 12.04, you were able to move it to ~/,local/share/applications/ and then start it from the Dash or the launcher. In my fresh 12.10 installation, this doesn't work anymore. I think the line that is misinterpreted is Exec=/usr/bin/chromium-browser --app=http://buymeapie.com/. If you try to run it from a terminal, you get the following result: 20:32 ~ speter Exec=/usr/bin/chromium-browser --app=http://buymeapie.com/ bash: --app=http://buymeapie.com/: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden (English: "File or directory not found"). Can anyone explain or knows a workaround?

However, I'm having a crisis of faith and wondering if it might be a better career move to jump on the Objective-C bandwagon. The way I see it, Windows 8 might be a success or it might not. Apple technologies are a sure bet. Honestly, I don't want to get into Apple development. I'd prefer to pretend AAPL doesn't exist, but, unfortunately, that's not possible.

  Let say I have this diagram, Given that i have all the co-ordinates of outer polygon and the distance between inner and outer polygon is d is also given. How to calculate the inner polygon co-ordinates? Edit: I was able to solved the issue by getting the mid-points of all lines. From these mid-points I can move d distance, So I can get three points. No I have 3 points and 3 slopes. From this, I can get three new equations. Simultaneously, solving the equation get the 3 points.

• How can set up a file sharing server to allow remote access over a WAN?

  I want to set up a server to allow remote access over a WAN. The purpose is to allow people to remote connect and download specific files from a specified folder hosted on the server. Is there software available to achieve this, preferably with an interface so I can easily add and remove users, plus monitor who is connected at any time? I have looked around and only found terminal references, and not very clear how to set up. I have a service running on my Win server, but I am hoping to move from that to Ubuntu for my file sharing. I do not want people who access the server to have any local accounts or any access to any folder/files apart from authorised folders/files. Thanks

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! • how to get started with a game engine [closed]

  I'm a 3rd year Computer Science student and I would like to get started with building a game engine or at least tinkering with making one. I am curious if there are any good resources to use to get started. I get the idea behind different pieces in the engine, but I'm not really sure about how they fit together. Is there anything out there to help teach me the skeleton of a game engine? So far I've been playing with the idea of a game engine that uses modules built in a circular linked list so that each can do it's computing and then pass move to the next piece of the engine to work.

  Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Please move if necessary I want to back up all my photos and videos online. Some videos are HD and up to 2GB in size. Does anyone know of any good sites? Flcker and Picasca seem the obvious ones but there seem to be limits on size. I have also heard bad things about the Picasca UI. I basically want to remove most of the photos from my laptop HD and then sync with web when I want to download them. Viewing via mobile is not a big thing for me. I just want somewhere save to back up stuff. Thanks

• Hibernation is still missing from menu in 13.10 after enabling via polkit. How to enable?

  I know that since 12.04, we need to add a policykit rule to enable hibernation (see question How to enable hibernation? and the Official Documentation). I can successfully bring my laptop into hibernation mode with sudo pm-hibernate or sudo s2disk, so the rule is in place and works, but the hibernation entry is still missing in the menu. I can tell from looking through the source of the indicator-session package (but not understanding the whole code) that there is still a hibernation menu entry in the code and it should be displayed when the system is capable of hibernating. Please calm down if you're enraged by this. This is very unlikely to be a conspiracy, but rather a bug/regression on a deeper level, which can happen when you move code around or replace it. Question: What needs to be done in 13.10 to properly tell indicator-session that the system can hibernate? Possible duplicate: Hibernation still not available - No activity, because saucy was in development at that time, so out of scope for AskUbuntu. • how to fix error when authenticating in U1

  Like other users, when authenticating in U1 I get this error: Method "CreateItem" with signature "a{sv}(oayay)b" on interface "org.freedesktop.Secret.Collection" doesn't exist. And in /var/log/auth.log: gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: egg_symkey_generate_simple: assertion `iterations >= 1' failed gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: couldn't prepare to write out keyring: /home/yann/.gnome2/keyrings/login_1.keyring So I tried to move "login.keyring". I typed no password for the security when logging into U1, accepted non secured way to save passwords. And a message told me the operation successfully completed (in French). But, sync did not work. And u1sdtool --status returned this: State: AUTH_FAILED connection: With User With Network description: auth failed is_connected: False is_error: True is_online: False queues: WORKING I'm sorry U1 doesn't work anymore; it was really useful to me. • Edge flicker when moving Camera (2D)

  I have a Orthographic camera. I have a fixed landscape texture and a texture for a moveable object. If the object moves to the right the camera will also move with the object. When I also draw an score text that should have fixed position on the screen, that score text position will be update too if the camera's position gets updated so that it looks like that it is fixed on the screen. But if I do that, I have some edge flickering at the text object. I'am using SpriteBatch! Is there another approach to implement a fixed positioned object on the screen?

• Is there such a thing as having too many private functions/methods?

  I understand the importance of well documented code. But I also understand the importance of self-documenting code. The easier it is to visually read a particular function, the faster we can move on during software maintenance. With that said, I like to separate big functions into other smaller ones. But I do so to a point where a class can have upwards of five of them just to serve one public method. Now multiply five private methods by five public ones, and you get around twenty-five hidden methods that are probably going to be called only once by those public ones. Sure, it's now easier to read those public methods, but I can't help but think that having too many functions is bad practice.
