• Small store infrastructure - where to begin?

  It looks like my older brother is about to change jobs - from lawyer to shooting range proprietor - and since I'm the family 'computer guy' I have the task of coming up with and setting up the in-store equipment. Only problem, I don't know how to start or where to look. I'm a web programmer, not an IT specialist. To that end, I figured I should ask the pros. Users: 3 (myself, my brother, and his business partner) Equipment: 1 Windows (likely 7) desktop for POS software, 1 Windows desktop/laptop for backroom use (bookkeeping, etc.) Other: ?? I'm looking for a reliable and, well, idiot-proof way to handle backups. Neither my brother nor his business partner are tech savvy (A web browser, email, MS Word and Excel are about the extent of their knowledge), so I need something they can handle. On-site would be preferable to off-site, given my brother's hesitance to have sensitive business data be handled by an outside source. I'm also looking for a small on-site server. I estimate that, at most, only 2-3 users will need access. A linux solution would keep costs down, but I'm concerned about Windows <- linux interoperability. Would the store security cameras' storage be handled by the security company, or would we have to stream that data to our own server? I know from my own experience with personal security that the company gives/loans a recording device to the home owner, but I'm not sure about business security. I know this sounds like a shopping list, and it's pretty vague. I wish I could give more detail, but between my own ignorance and things not being 100% nailed down on the business end, I'm a bit stuck. At the very least I'd like a nudge - links on a place to start, what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. - for this endeavor. Thanks.

• How to pin "Visual Studio 2010 Documentation" shortcut to Windows 7 taskbar?

  I just installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 at home, on my Windows 7 PC. One of the items installed with VS2010 is "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Documentation". I like to have the documentation installed locally and at my fingertips, and so before had always added a shortcut for the help viewer to my Quick Launch toolbar. However, I'm not able to pin the new documentation to the Windows 7 taskbar. It's frustrating. Note carefully: When I launch "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Documentation" from the Start menu, it seems to perform two functions: First, it launches the "Help Library Agent", which is a local HTTP server from which the help content is served... similar to the local ASP.NET web development server. Second, it launches the default web browser against the localhost URL corresponding to the port on which the "Help Library Agent" is running, for example: http://127.0.0.1:47873/help/1-1444/ms.help?method=f1&query=msdnstart&product=VS&productVersion=100&locale=en-US ... in other words, the program doesn't leave behind an active foreground process that displays in the taskbar. So, I can't choose "Pin this program to taskbar" as one might do so with a typical program. How can I get a shortcut to "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Documentation" in the Windows 7 taskbar? Has anybody got a workaround for this?

• SSL Handshake negotiation on Nginx terribly slow

  I am using Nginx as a proxy to 4 apache instances. My problem is that SSL negotiation takes a lot of time (600 ms). • Orphaned SQL Recordsets/Connections with IIS

  I have an IIS 6 site running on Windows 2003 Server x86 with MS SQL2005 Enterprise edition running ASP Classic (no choice). The site runs very fast with about 8000 page views per hour. All of my SQL tables are indexed and I have used the profiler to check my queries, the slowest of which is only about 10-15ms. I have autoshrink disabled, autogrow is set to 250mb, database is 2gb with 800mb of free space. My problem is that every now and then the site will slow to a crawl for no reason. Pages that just have a simple 'connect to databse and increment a hit counter' work ok, but more SQL intensive pages that normally execute in about 60ms take 25,000ms to run. This happens for about 30 seconds and then goes away. I was having an issue with orphan recordsets and connections due to the way I was releasing them. I have fixed this up and the issue is much better, but I am still getting them. Is there a way with permon, etc. to track when SQL Server or Windows closes these Orphan connections? At least if I can monitor the issue I will know if I am making progress or if I am even looking at the right things. Is there anything else I might be missing? Thank you!

• Sane patch schedule for Windows 2003 cluster

  We've got a cluster of 75 Win2k3 nodes at work in a coarse grained compute cluster. The cluster is behind a mountain of firewalls and resides in its own VLAN. Jobs of all sizes and types run on the cluster and all of the executables running are custom-made. (ed: additional notes on our executables) The jobs range from 30 seconds to 7 days in duration, and may contain one executable or 2000 sub-jobs (of short duration). Obviously we are trying to avoid the situation where our IT schedules a reboot during a 7 day production job. We have scheduling software which accomodates all of the normal tasks for a coarse grained cluster and we can control which machines are active for submission, etc. If WSUS was in some way scriptable (or the client could state it's availability for shutdown) we could coordinate the two systems and help out. Currently, the patch schedule is the Sunday after Super Tuesday regardless of what is running on the cluster. We have to ask for an exemption every time we want to delay patching a machine for a long running production job. Basically, while our group is responsible for the machines we have little control over IT's patch schedule. Is patching monthly with MS's schedule sane for a production Windows cluster? Are there software hooks in WSUS where we could say, "please don't reboot just yet"?

• Windows Server - share files without access for administrator

  We have a MS Windows Server 2008 R8 based server that is administrated by our IT department. We would like to achieve two things simultaneously: A folder on the server, containing several thousand files (new files added frequently) that is accessible to some ActiveDirectory users (e.g. board of directors) but is not accessible by IT department employees IT department employees still maintain rights to administrate the server, including installing new software and services We already checked some solutions: Using NTFS access rights. Unfortunately IT (members of "Administrators" group) can set themselves as new owners of the files and change the permissions so that they gain access to the files. Enabling EFS. Unfortunately even if you do not allow IT to access files, they still can disable EFS completely because they have administrative rights. Moreover as far as I know you have to manually add permissions for all users but the owner for each new file - very inconvenient. Creating a new role for the IT department that has all the privileges apart from taking ownership of files. Unfortunately if you're not a member of the Administrators group, you cannot install new software, no matter what privileges you add to the role. TrueCrypt - nice free encryption software, but with poor sharing capabilities. You can either mount an encryption container on the server (and then IT has access to its contents) or you mount them locally but only one user can mount it for writing. AxCrypt - free encryption software that enables file-by-file encryption on the server. There are some disadvantages though - you have to manually encrypt each new file added. The files have their extensions changes. You can only set one password for all files (so all users have to know this one password). Any other ideas? Our budget is limited so enterprise-class software from Symantec or PGP would probably be not an option.

• Acrobat 9 Pro - shortcut key failure

  I create numerous Acrobat PDF files from MS Word documents via Acrobat 9 Pro. I often need to print a single page from an Acrobat PDF file. I normally use the keyboard shortcut Control-P (Print Dialog) and ALT-U (current page). I recently set up a new PC with Windows 7, and this shortcut combination does not work. When I press ALT-U, it moves the highlight to the correct item, but does not select the radio button. If I press the Enter key, then I print the entire document instead of the current page - VERY annoying! It looks like there is an error in the design of the Print dialog for Acrobat. There are two items which have ALT-U as the keyboard shortcut. They are "Current page" in the Print range frame, and "Summarize comments". I have been able to use Control-P (Print Dialog) and ALT-U (current page) with no problems on virtual machines and older computers running Windows XP. Maybe I installed some software on the new PC that is messing up the keyboard shortcut. Is there any way to figure out the culprit - or is this a known problem with Acrobat?

• Host multiple domains with Apache on a VPS

  Hi I have recently bought a windows VPS and installed apache, mysql using xampp. All services are running fine. I can access the hosted site using the IP of VPS but what I need to do is host multiple domains on that server. Actually my requirement was to use htaccess on a php based site but the site had to access data from ms sql server as well. So needed to enable php_mssql.dll in the php.ini which no shared hosting was supporting. Had to go for this VPS. Plesk was installed by default but as htaccess wont work with IIS, I had to stop IIS service and install apache there. Now all is well, but I need to find a way to host multiple domains there. When I bought the VPS they hosting people sent me the dedicated IP of the server and also I have the 2 name servers required to host domains. What is the next step? Exactly which file I need to modify to get things done? Please help! Any kind of help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance for all of your kind help and time.

• TLS_REQCERT and PHP with LDAPS

  Problem: Secure LDAP queries via command-line and PHP to an AD domain controller with a self-signed certificate. Background: I am working on a project where I need to enable LDAP look-ups from a PHP web application to a MS AD domain controller that is using a self-signed certificate. This self-signed certificate is also using a domain name that is not a FQDN - think of something like people.campus as the domain name. The web application would take the user's credentials and pass them on to the AD domain controller to verify if the credntials are a match or not. This seems simple, but I am having problems trying to get PHP and the self-signed certificate to work. Some people have suggested that I changed the TLS_REQCERT variable from "request" to "never" within the OpenLDAP configuration. I am concerned that this might have larger implications such as a man-in-the-middle attack and I am not comfortable changing this setting to never. I have also read some places online where one can take a certificate and place it as a trusted source within the openldap configuration file. I am curious if that is something that I could do for the situation that I have? Can I, from the command line, obtain the self-signed certificate that the AD domain controller is using, save it to a file, and then have openldap use that file for the trust that it needs so that I do not need to adjust the variable from request to never? I do not have access to the AD domain controller and as a result cannot export the certificate. If there is a way to obtain the certificate from the command line, what commands do I need to use? Is there an alternate method of handling this issue that would be better in the long run? I have some CentOS servers and some Ubuntu servers that I am working with to try and get this going on. • very slow internet with Linksys WRT54GL only in wireless mode (wired is OK)

  I bought a new Cisco Linksys WRT54GL router to connect my laptop (running Windows 7) to the internet. I installed Tomato 1.28 firmware on the router. When I connect the laptop to the router via ethernet cable, everything is fine and I get extremely fast up- and download speeds. When I connect wirelesssly however, websites load extremely slow - it takes dozens of seconds to load a website! <-- This is my question, how can I fix the wireless speed issue? Gmail for example is unusable this way. I tried speedtest.net, but this always fails in the upload part of the test so I can't even test the bandwidth (could the fact that it fails in the upload part, not the download part, be an indication what the problem is?!). I have isolated the problem a bit, I am convinced it has to do either with the router itself, the router settings, or the settings of the wireless connection in Win 7. Because previously, I was using another router by Buffalo and I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried to reproduce the settings from the Bufallo router as closely as possible on the Linksys router (same channel, same encryption etc). The download speed problem only occurs with the Linksys router, and only in wireless mode! When I exchange the Linksys router with the Buffalo router I have here for testing, the wireless speed is up to normal again. Also, before I had installed the Tomato firmware I had exactly the same problem, so it has nothing to do with the firmware itself. Notes & things I already tried: Changing the channel: does not seem to affect anything, I am also on the same channel (10) which I was previously on when I had a Buffalo router. QoS is off. Ping to the router itself is OK, ~ 1 ms. • Why does Windows Event Log stop logging events before maximum log size is reached?

  I have a service that produces a lot of event log output. Currently the event log is configured to overwrite any old events to keep the log from ever getting full. We have also increased the event log size considerably (to about 600 MB). Recently the service started reporting errors to its clients, and the error message it was sending to its clients is "The event log file is full". How can this be, when event log is configured to overwrite as necessary? In our hurry to get the service back up we cleared the event log without saving its contents, but most likely it had not reached 600 MB yet, judging from sizes of some earlier log dumps. There is also MS KB entry 312571, which reports that a hot fix to a similar issue is available, but the the configuration that the fix applies to is not exactly the same we have. Specifically, the fix only applies if event logs are configured to never overwrite old events. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that the log files apparently are memory-mapped. What happens if the system runs out of address space to map files to?

• Any dangers in using DDR memory with a higher frequency than the FSB?

  I'm looking to upgrade memory in an older motherboard. The processor is an AMD Sempron 2500+ with a maximum speed of 333/166MHz. The motherboard is an MSI MS-7061 (KV3M-V), which accepts up to 2Gb of DDR memory maximum PC2700 in 2 slots and has a maximum FSB of 333MHz. The board does not have dual-channel support. Existing memory includes a stick of 512Mb PC3200, which seems to be running OK (presumably at PC2700) but is rated 200MHz, which is below the FSB speed. The other stick is 256Mb PC2100/133MHz, again below the FSB speed. (All figures from CPU-Z.) I have a chance to acquire a single used stick of PC3200/400MHz memory very cheaply. Crucial's system scanner seems to suggest that this will be OK with my system, but other sites have suggested that running memory with a higher frequency than the FSB can cause instability. Is this true? Would I be better waiting until I can buy the correct PC2700/333MHz stick? I'm assuming that the mixed memory I have at present is running as 768Mb at 133MHz. Is this a reasonable assumption? If so, would you expect the performance differences between 768Mb/133MHz and 1Gb/333MHz to be very noticeable? If I install the new 1Gb/400 or 333MHz stick in slot 1, am I right in thinking that adding back the existing 512Mb/200MHz stick in slot 2 would pull the whole 1.5Gb system memory speed down to 200MHz? If so, which would be better - 1.5Gb/200MHz, or the single 1Gb stick at the full 333MHz that the FSB permits? Is more headroom more important than extra speed? Any help - or even opinions - gratefully received. I can't find reliable information, and I can't afford to make expensive mistakes.

• Is Ubuntu a viable replacement of Windows XP for small enterprise environments?

  Hi all, I'm a newbie systems administrator, so any advice would be great. I would like to setup ubuntu 8.04 lts in a small office of consulting in management (around 50 workstations) instead of Windows XP. I would install MS Office 2007 via WINE (*). It would be a fresh installation, so the migration would be less of a pain. The new setup would also include a small server as document repository and a backup server by now. Later, I would install another goodies like a IM server, a document management solution, and whatnot collaborative tool. What do you advice in this scenario? Do you think is viable? Should I try to convince my managers this is a good idea? I consider myself as a fair experienced user in both systems, and I'm the only guy in charge of everything. I need to cut costs down, and I think that antivirus and antimalware software are a waste of money and time. Is this good idea?, or should I resign and try to lock down the Windows systems and install AV software? Is there anything else in this setup I'm not foreseeing? (*) The only catch in my test machine until now had been that Office SmartArt doesn't work properly, the rest of Office 2007 may seem ok.

• sharepoint crawl not indexing main site

  Guys I'm having some strange search issues' going on with my main portal application. First off let me give you a little back ground on the problem web app. Our Sharepoint environment was originally set up by a consultant that did not follow best practices. She used one web app to house our companies' intranet site, ssp, and mysites. Since than I have provisioned a new ssp that I have segmented correctly I moved all of our other sites over to the new ssp with out any problems . However, I could not assign the main portal app to the new ssp since the portal app housed the ssp site collection. So I deleted the ssp site collection after that I deleted the ssp and assigned the portal app to my new ssp. Now this is where the problem starts when I attempt to crawl this application the crawl starts than stops 5 seconds later with a status of success also it reports that 1 item was successfully crawled. The funny thing is the main portal app has nearly 30000 items. I have tracked the problem down to the web app if I create a test web app than restore the content I have no problem crawling all 30000 items. Also all of my other web apps that use the same ssp have no problem completing crawls. I don't see anything in the ULS logs or server 2003's event viewer. Also I'm using a separate dedicated index server that's configured to crawl itself via host file configuration. I would like to fix this problem with out having to recreate our main portal site due to the fact that we have several custom code modifications where DLL's were registered to the IIS bin folder also I don't even want to get into the Silverlight mods that were done. • Virtualize SBS 2003 - P2V vs migrating to new VM

  I need to virtualize a SBS 2003 server in my work environment. I need some tips on what people think is the best way to proceed. Background: The SBS 2003 server is the primary DC for the domain and also hosts FTP, RRAS(VPN), DNS, and file shares. Exchange is NOT used, neither is SQL server. DHCP is done via a firewall appliance. I have added a Server 2003 VM to the domain and promoted it to the DC role. AD/DNS is replicating here correctly. This was mainly done to provide fault-tolerance to the domain, I was not intending to make this VM the primary DC. I've already asked about buying upgraded licensing for Server 2008/2012 but was refused due to cost. Options: I see (at least) two routes I could take to complete this. From what I've read option 2 is the "preferred" method, but there's a few steps where I'm not clear on what to expect. Option 1.) P2V the primary DC Power off primary DC Power off secondary DC (to prevent USN rollback in case P2V has issue) P2V (cold clone) primary DC Boot new PDC VM Allow new hardware to detect Remove old NIC hardware from device manager Assign old IPs to new virtual NICs Reboot PDC VM, confirm connectivity and no major issues Power on secondary DC, confirm replication Option 2.) Create new VM, transfer roles, remove original DC from domain Create new VM, install SBS 2003 Do I need the original SBS install discs for this? MS migration doc mentions this. • Compaq Motherboard gives "CPU Fan Error"

  I have a motherboard for a HP business desktop dx5150 PC. The model written on the board is "MS-7050" and it is for an AMD socket 939 processor. I got everything installed in it, and when I turned it on, it showed a message stating that there was a "CPU Fan Error" (or some similar language) and then turned off. It never stays on for more than about 30 seconds, probably less. The fan had previously been working great, but I replaced it anyway with a brand new Cooler Master fan. This did not work. I then reset the BIOS with the jumpers on the board, no dice. I replaced the CMOS battery. Same error. I then replaced the entire computer power supply with a brand new Antec, same error. The fan header is keyed, and has room for 3 pins. The CPU fan is designed the same way, so its not that I'm missing a temperature sensor or anything. Can anyone give some suggestions? Especially maybe some secret keystrokes to bypass this error?

• Known USB 2.0 devices don't install driver, but must be manually forced

  When a known USB 2.0 device is plugged in and detected, it doesn't install the driver correctly but shows a Code 28 error and lists the device under "Other Devices" in Device Manager. When view properties of this device , it shows the following status; The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver. When updating the driver manually and selecting the appropriate driver Windows doesn't believes it's the correct driver, but you can force the installation and it works! The other condition the driver will auto-install is when the same USB device is plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Power related issues are not also causing this as I have tried vi a Docking station, USB hub. etc.. Devices tried; Jabra Headset USB-Mass Storage Device (flash disk and ext HD) MS Wireless Keyboard & Mouse USB Ethernet controller (USB-MAC controller) This is on a laptop part of a Domain with Windows 7 Ent 7601, I am logged in as a local administrator. There isn't any Group Policies blocking not signed driver or whitelisted devices on the domain. Any suggestions please feel free

• Active Directory: how to be SURE users can change their own passwords?

  Working on some project where a tool we have has to authenticate against AD connecting via LDAPS and perform password changes if required or requested. IN THEORY, the tool does that, and we have seen it work in other projects. IN PRACTICE, against this particular directory, it fails. Been driving me crazy. The particulars of the situation: Windows 2003 AD Defined a "technical user" for the LDAP connection with rights to change users passwords When password change is required - in this case, because pwdLastSet is 0 - the tool uses the technical account to go, bind to the controller and change the user password. If password change is not required but the user request it, then the bind is done with the user account. That last condition is the one that doesnt work. With the technical user the password change is possible, but with the user itself, it isnt. We get an error like this: LDAP access failed: javax.naming.directory.InvalidAttributeValueException: [LDAP: error code 19 - 0000052D: AtrErr: DSID-03190F00, #1: 0: 0000052D: DSID-03190F00, problem 1005 (CONSTRAINT_ATT_TYPE), data 0, Att 9005a (unicodePwd) no idea what DSID-03190F00 means cause it doesnt seem to be anywhere in google :-/ Been looking at several MS documentation pages and frankly, I'm not understanding one bit of it. There is some "control access right" called User-Change-Password that may, or may not, control what objects have the right to change their own password, which may, or may not, have to do with ACE and ACLs... There is GPO. There is maybe the password policy but it is only set to ask for passwords of 6 chars or more... Can anybody explain to me in easy-to-check steps how can I go and tell the AD admin guy (who is as lost as me) what to do to ensure that users in the AD directory (objectClass top,person,organizationalPerson and user) are able to change their own passwords by themselves? • RAID 10 or RAID 5 for multiple VMs - what is the best choice?

  I have just ordered a new rig for my business. We do a lot of software development for Microsoft SharePoint and need the rig to run several virtual machines for development and test purposes. We will be using the free VMware ESXi for virtualization. For a start, we plan to build and start the following VMs - all with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64: Active Directory server MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Automated Build Server SharePoint 2010 Server for hosting our public Web site and our internal Intranet for a few people. The load on this server is going to be quite insignificant. 2xSharePoint 2007 development server 2xSharePoint 2010 development server Beyond that we will need to build several SharePoint farms for testing purposes. These VMs will only be started when needed. The specs of the new rig is: Dell R610 rack server 2xIntel XEON E5620 48GB RAM 6x146GB SAS drives Dell H700 RAID controller We believe the new server is going to make our VMs perform a lot better than our existing setup (2xIntel XEON, 16GB RAM, 2x500 GB SATA in RAID 1). But we are not sure about the RAID level for the new rig. Should we go for having the the 6x146GB SAS drives in a RAID 10 configuration or a RAID 5 configuration? RAID 10 seems to offer better write performance and lower risk of a RAID failure. But it comes at a cost of less drive space. Do we need RAID 10 or would RAID 5 also be a good choice for us?

• Dual-head monitor system Kubuntu 10.04

  I have a notebook Asus V6X00V with 1400*1050 monitor(name: LVDS) and Dell Monitor 1920*1080 (VGA-0). I want to have a dual monitor system. At MS Windows everything is working fine. During the Kubuntu installation the Dell and the main notebook monitors have a right resolutions(1920*1080 & 1400*1050). But after some stage it have been changed to the 1152*864 for both. Now the right resolution is only during turning off process and when I am using the console. So it shows that system can use this resolutions. The problem is just in a settings. I am using Size & Orientation - System Settings for setting adjustment. Any option that changes resolution for any monitor or changing position(Absolute, Left Of, Right of and so on) cause the color line noise on the screens. I have tried xrandr: xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1400x1050 --pos 0x0 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of LVDS --pos 1400x0 but have received the same result. I have find out that for example the previous version of Randr(1.2, now I have xrandr 1.3) need a xorg.conf file modification to create a big virtual screen, but kubuntu 10.4 don't have xorg.conf and I don't know should I modify xorg for 1.3 version of xrandr or not. Please help me to solve this problem

• How to view / enumerate / obtain a list of all effective rights / permissions on an Active Directory object?

  I am new to Server Fault and was hoping to find an answer to a question that I have been struggling with for the past week or so. I have been recently asked by my management to furnish a list of all the effective rights / permissions delegated on the Active Directory object for our Domain Admins group. I initially figured I'd use the Effective Permissions Tab in Active Directory Users and Computers but had two problems with it. The first was that it doesn't seem very accurate and the second was that it requires me to enter the name of a specific user, and it only shows me what it figures are effective permissions for that user. Now, we have more than a 1000 users in our environment so there's no way I can possibly enter 1000 user names one by one. Plus, there is no way to export that information either. I also looked at dsacls from MS but it doesn't do effective permissions. Someone pointed me to a tool called ADUCAdmin but that seems to falsely claim to do effective permissions. Could someone kindly help me find a way to obtain this listing? Basically, I need to generate a list of all the modify effective permissions granted on the Domain Admins group object along with the list of all the admins to which these permissions are granted. In case it helps, I don't need a fancy listing - simple text / CSV output would be enough I would be grateful for any assistance since this is time and security sensitive for us.

• Goal setting/tracking packages for software projects

  I'm a developer working by myself. I'm looking for a computerized tool to manage my goals and activities. I own it Microsoft Project, but I don't like it. I've started many "projects" but could never keep on using it. Too complex and heavyweight for me. I use MS-Outlook tasks. They are not what I need. No planning capability. Tracking is not nice. I'm using the Pomodoro technique and I like it, but I'm looking for something more comprehensive and with better computerized support. Something that would allow me to define goals with dependencies and time estimation, keep daily prioritized lists etc. So, I'm looking for a solution. One I've found is GoalPro, but I uneasy because I could not find a cross-product "top ten" like review. Are you using any goal setting package such as GoalPro? Which? Does it help? Pros and Cons?

• LDAP SSL connect problem

  I set up a test domain for my LDAP SSL tests and it is not working. I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 SP 1. I came so far: 1. i generated and installed my self signed certificate on the test domain controller 2. on the server i can log into ldap over SSL with the MS ldp.exe tool. 3. using ldp.exe on a client that is no in this domain the login fails with error 0x51 = "failed to connect". (i don't have a client computer that is in this domain right now) 4. I testet the certificate by using it in the IIS on the test server and I can reach the default page of the test server over SSL. (from the client that is not in the domain) 5. analysing the traffic between client and server I can see that the server is sending a certificate to the client. why isn't this working on my client computer?

• Menu command stuck on screen

  For some reason, periodically when I select a menu command, the command label gets "stuck" on the screen and won't go away. I can close all open applications, including whichever one I was using when it got stuck, but it still won't go away. In the screenshot below, I opened an new instance of IE just to show how the label stays on top. The label was not created by this instance of IE. Edit with the source: The label that gets stuck is the first menu command I select in IE. If a label is already stuck, a new one does not get stuck (regardless of which instance(s) of IE are involved). Based on this knowledge, I now just open IE on my secondary monitor, carefully open the context menu so the Properties command is in the bottom corner, and click it. This is not a solution... The label never moves and is transparent to mouse input (if I click it, it's as if I clicked the item behind it). The label does not go away if I close all running applications. I haven't tried stopping services or closing system tray items like Live Mesh. The label does go away if I change the screen resolution and then change it back. Any ideas how I can stop this from happening? It's happened a half dozen times since yesterday and it's becoming quite disrupting to my work. Obviously I added the circle in MS Paint. That part isn't stuck. ;)

• Combining AD permissions with FTP

  We're using Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory controlling access to a network share. We've setup FTP so that people can access that share from outside (we used to use the PPTP VPN but for various reasons we need to switch to FTP). So far here is what we've managed to implement on the FTP: -The network share is used as the FTP root (defined as a UNC) and that is working fine. -AD authentication is working fine (wrong password and you stay out, good password you're in, password management in AD correctly synched with the FTP). -AD permissions are failing: the AD permissions on the content of the FTP root are ignored: it's either a user only has read or write access, but this applies to the whole FTP root, which obviously isn't suitable since that FTP root is initially our network share and files/folders have different AD permissions depending on people's groups... Whether we set the permissions through the share OR the FTP management interface, AD permissions are never enforced. Q1: Is that normal? Q2: If so what solutions exist to combine AD permissions with FTP on MS server 2008? Q3: If not, where should I look to fix the configuration?
