Trouble with 12.10 lag

Well basicly lately I have been having lag problems with 12.10. I will post my specs, but before the update to 12.10, it said that I had intel graphics. Now it says I have Gallium. Does anyone else out there long for the simpler days where you needed to move a jumper in the jumper block to set your modem card to use IRQ7 so it would not conflict with the interrupts used by other boards in your PC and your modem card came with a 78 page manual telling you everything you would need to know to write your own driver for the board including a full schematic along with the board layout showing every chip, capacitor, and resistor? Ahhhhh, the simplicity!I am wrestling with UserPnp issues for a USB software licensing dongle that is needed by some third party software in one of our production applications. Of course, every machine in production is virtual, so it could be anything in the chain of the software application library to the device driver running on the VM to the configuration of the simulated USB port to the implementation of the USB connection and transport in the virtual host to the physical electrical connections in the USB port on the hypervisor.If only there were the virtual analog to a set of needle-nose pliers to move a virtual jumper.Come to think of it, I always used to drop those damn things such that they would land in an irretrievable position under the motherboard anyway.

Broadcom 4313 Signal strength very low on an HP Pavilion dv4

I have a HP pavilion dv4 4141US laptop running fresh ubuntu 11.10. This laptop has a broadcom 4313gn chipset for the network card. The network card is using the brcmsmac driver. Which, I heard else where on askUbuntu that its the best driver to be using for this card. I can connect to my network, however I have extremely low network signal. Right now I am right in front of the router, and I only get 72%. If i go to the room directly behind the router's wall, i get no signal, where as with windows 7 I get a nice 70% percent. UPDATE: I use WEP at home and an open wireless connection at work. Both have same result. Both are completely different routers. Also you G What can i do?

Removal of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge from Java SE 8 JDK

Starting with Java SE 8, the JDBC-ODBC Bridge will no longer be included with the JDK. The JDBC-ODBC Bridge has always been considered transitional and a non-supported product[1] that was only provided with select JDK bundles and not included with the JRE. The JDBC-ODBC bridge provides limited support for JDBC 2.0 and does not support more recent versions of the JDBC specification. I would recommend that you use a JDBC driver provided by the vendor of your database or a commercial JDBC Driver instead of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge. I need to parse some large text file and extract Display name and area code only if it matches the following pattern: Line starts with display name (any number of words) Followed by 6 digits (can contain spaces) Followed by #text tag e.g. John doe 123 456 #text some text Display name: John doe Area code: 123 456 Test 123456 #text Display name: Test Area code: 123456 Test 123 #test Invalid, area code contains only 3 digits Test 123456 #test1 Invalid, contains invalid tag Test 123g45 #test Invalid, area code contains letters etc. I know how to open the text file and read it line by line, but having trouble with writing the regular expression. Play videos with libwebkit in Ubuntu 11.10 server

I'm using libwebkit (with python-webkit) to render a page that plays a video. This application works fine in a Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop, Nvidia card and lots of libraries and software installed, but in a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 Server with intel 82945G/GZ card the video does not play. I guess either some codec package is missing or it's a driver problem. What could be missing for this to play? I'm trying with this video: http://video.eustasy.co.uk/480/ EDIT: doesn't look like a driver problem. With chromium I can play the video, but with libwebkit + python-webkit the video just shows the first frame and doesn't play. Any hints on what package could be missing? SOLVED: apparently it had to do with lack of audio. While chrome would play the video with no sound, libwebkit wouldn't start video. Adding user to audio and video groups solved the problem.

Unstable Wifi and Spontaneous Low-graphic Error with Pavilion DV4

I've been having numerous problems with connectivity through WiFi. It had been working for a few days and now it doesn't. On top of that around 40% of every time I turn on the laptop it shows "System running in low-graphics" error and I'm unable to view the desktop (sometimes not even able to access terminal), therefore having to manually power-down until it finally works. How can I install Ubuntu (SO many problems)

I have a question, my friend tried installing Ubuntu on my notebook (Asus g75v) and nothing tried, at one point he went past the installation screen and every he used the mouse the screen flickered and the driver crashed (I assume) and it would go back a step, I heard that there is way to install ubuntu without any graphics, maybe that will help me with the screen flickering (I have a gtx 670m), so we tried WUBI installer, I tried installing with that and it gave me a Wubildr.mbr missing error, so I gave that up after several times, although I do notice that I have an intel driver, and I keep downloading AMD versions, does that effect anything? I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu and I wish to be able to run it on my laptop, I want to learn this OS and I cannot even install it, I am a bit concerned, if anyone can back at me with any answer at all, please don't hesitate to post, just please don't post if you don't know what's going on, thanks for listening! ~cheers -Dragos

Ubuntu 13.04 ERROR: /etc/apt/sources.list not found

So, I tried uninstalling the LAMP stack I had following the Ubuntu documentation for it. I also manually removed dbconfig-common. Now, I'm unable to run apt-get update. When I do, I get the error message: E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/htp could not be found. After some digging, I've discovered that I no longer even have an /etc/apt/sources.list file. Also, I've received an error, when trying to run: sudo tasksel install lamp-server That aptitude can not be found. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? I'm not able to find any documentation online that works - all the documentation out there is dated and no longer (or will not) work with 13.04. I followed this link previously prior to posting my question and it did not work for me: How do I fix a "E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/http could not be found." error?

3.5.0-18 kernel update broke BCM43228

After updating the kernel to 3.5.0-18 the Broadcom BCM43228 wireless card of my Acer Aspire One 756 has stopped working properly. The card often refuses to connect to my AP, and if it connects it behaves very unstable. I have already reinstalled the drivers, as recommended by googling around. As far as I can tell the only driver that supports my card is the bcmwl package. I found one solution saying I should install broadcom-sta using module assistant, however I could not get this to install and apparently broadcom-sta and bcmwl are effectively the same driver? Is anyone experiencing similar issues? Is it possible to just downgrade to the previous kernel version?

How to make my Oracle update/insert action through Java faster?

I am facing a problem in my company that is - our program's speed is not fast enough. To be more specific, we are telecommunication company and this program handle call/internet serfing transaction made by every mobile phone users in our city. Because the amount of download content made by the iphone users is just too much, our program cannot handle them fast enough. The situation is, the amount of transaction made by users are double of the transaction processed by our program. Most of the running time of the program are dominated by DB transactions. I've search through the internet and browsed some sites ( for example: http://www.javaperformancetuning.com/tips/rawtips.shtml ) talking about Java performace in DB, but I cannot find a suggestion suitable for us. These advices are not applicable/already used, for instance: 1. Use prepared statements. Use parameterized SQL Already used prepared statement. Each time will use different parameter by clear parameters and set parameters. 2. Tune the SQL to minimize the data returned (e.g. not 'SELECT *'). Sure, already used. 3. Use connection pooling. We hold a single connection during the program's execution. And I doubt that pooling cannot solve the problem because our program act as 1 user, so there are no problem for concurrent access to DB. If anyone of you think pooling is good, please tell me why. Thanks. 4. Try to combine queries and batch updates. Cannot do it. Every query/insert/update is depend on the database's information. For example, we look up the DB for the client's information, if we cannot find his usage, we insert the usage into DB, otherwise we do update. 5. Close resources (Connections, Statements, ResultSets) when finished Sure. 6. Select the fastest JDBC driver. I don't know. I've search on the internet about the type of driver available and I am very confused. We use oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver and we use thin instead of oci, that's all I know. In addition, our program is a two-tier way ( java <- oracle ) 7. Turn off auto-commit already done that. Looking forwards to any help.

Freezes if desktop effects is used [closed]

I have found that using desktop effects in Ubuntu versions later than 8.10 causes the desktop to freeze after a few seconds on my PC. the command lspci -nn gave the following 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02) and with lspci -k I have 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 The intel graphics cards seems to have some performence issues with xorg driver. However I have not noticed any freeze in Ubuntu 8.10. There are some workarounds at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes to make them work. But I can't find out what workaround should I do with my graphics controller. I have tried workaround F but it did not help. can anyone help me find a workaround for my graphics card? and is it actually possible to use desktop effect in this graphics card ?

Using data from a dataset in styles with Mapnik

I've setup Mapnik to connect to a PostGIS database, and display geometry. I'd like to have a column in my database called opacity, and use it as the opacity for that row of geometry when Mapnik renders it. So far, I've only found information on how to display text from the database, and how to use filters to display different styles when database values are within parameters. Nothing about how to use the values directly inside of a style or layer though - is this possible?

Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 results in loss of N network capability - how to restore?

On Ubuntu 11.10, I had zero issues with N network detection and speed. I cannot remember whether the old driver was iwlagn or iwlwifi. This was with Ubuntu repository Linux kernel 3.0.0-22. Upon upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, iwlwifi is the available driver and while it detects N networks, upon connection, the speed is cripplingly low and DNS look-ups do not occur (impossible to browse). This is with Ubuntu repository Linux kernel 3.2.0-26. Please note that the 11n_disable flag for the iwlwifi module cannot work for me as I require N network access. Is there another solution? Perhaps, is there a way to easily patch the new kernel with the old wireless module (just copy-and-paste the iwlagn module into the new kernel source and re-compile)? Relevant hardware specs: Dell Inspiron N5110 Network Adapter: Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1030

X11 and ARGB visuals: does DefaultDepth() never return 32?

Hi, I'm establishing a connection to the X server like this: display = XOpenDisplay(NULL); screen = DefaultScreen(display); depth = DefaultDepth(display, screen); I'm wondering now why "depth" is always set to 24. I would expect that it is only 24 when compositing is turned off, but in fact, it is still 24 even when I turn on compositing. So in order to get a 32-bit ARGB visual I need to call XGetVisualInfo() first with depth set explicitly to 32. Now to my question: Will DefaultDepth() generally never return more than 24 or is it just on my system? (my graphics board is somewhat dated...). I know that it could return 15, 16 or even 8 for a CLUT display but can it return 32? Or do I always have to use XGetVisualInfo() first to get a ARGB 32-bit visual? Thanks, Andy

IE6/7 CSS Class Overriding

I have a css file like: #SomeTable.hideAll .hide { display: none; } #SomeTable.showXYZ .show { display: block } When I add the class showCol to a td, the display overrides to block in chrome, FF, and IE8. But in IE6/7, the display stays none like it is not being overridden. Is there something odd you have to do in old IE's to do a css override like this? I suspect it has something to do with it either not being possible, or I just don't understand rules for determining an override.
