• Distorted text in programs

  I've installed Ubuntu 11 with gnome and in some point the text in the programs becomes unreadable like this. It's not only the text, but even the desktop background looks awful. I've tried to add section in xorg.conf, but it didn't helped out.   Hi, I have an .fla file with 1 image in the library and 1 .as file. I have linked the image up with the Class name of libraryImages and Base class is flash.display.BitmapData. • Why is this unordered list formatting differently in IE7?

  I'm better about getting things to look good in IE8, FF, and Safari, but IE7 still throws curve balls at me... • game is playing but broken graphics

  I installed Steam on Lubuntu and wanted to play dota2 (it has source engine) and it sayed i need a 3dts driver or something but i installed it alredy. I can start dota now, but when i start a game it is not... displaying correctly. For example when i pick a hero the 3d modell is covered in some kind of a lasershow and the map...... i looked around a bit think it is because of the drivers and i should have mesa 9. Steam can show the system specs and it says that i have nouveau Gallium 0.4 on NVAA as driver and 3.0 Mesa 10.0.0-devel (git-1100093 saucy-oibaf-ppa) as driverversion and OpenGL 3.0 i am a noob on linux and need step by step guides please

• Trouble with FGLRX in quantal x86_64

  it's the third time i have to reinstall quantal because the fglrx is making me sick. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 (the code ir RS880).When i install Ati Driver, i don't have any problems, but when i reboot, the resolution is minimal and the launcher isn't visible, i can only use the things that are in desktop and use the terminal using CTRL+ALT+T. i've tried to make specific distribution page, downloading the legacy driver from AMD, and another thing: when i had 12.04 jockey told me that i could install some drivers, i had trouble, but that doesn't matter. now, the option to install drivers doesn't tell me about any drivers, i mean, its blank. At the moment i'm using the free drivers (Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880M. is there any alternative ? or i'll have to live with the free drivers ? Thanks a lot ! I KNOW I HAVE TO INSTALL LEGACY DRIVERS, I'VE INSTALLED THEM, THEY DON'T WORK.

• Samsung NC10 Broadcom difficulties

  I am new to Ubuntu/Linux and am stuck already! Any help much appreciated. I have managed to install Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 (from a USB flash drive) on my NC10 which also has Windows 7 on the partitioned drive. But the wireless internet is not working. I have identified the hardware as a Broadcom BCM4313. I have also managed to find that the correct driver is installed (Modaliases for Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA driver). I have followed advice from elsewhere and there does not seem to be any competition from other drivers. I am now stuck and do not have any other internet access on this netbook. Any ideas?

• How do I turn off nVidia high performance mode?

  I am new to Ubuntu 11.10 and never touched linux until today. I installed Ubuntu alongside with Windows 7. I have an issue with my laptop overheating and freezing when it uses the high performance GPU graphics mode (hybrid card). It is an easy fix for Windows 7. I simply set the graphics mode manually to the low performance integrated graphics (save power) mode using advanced power settings. In Ubuntu, I'm stumped at how to do this. When using Ubuntu, my laptop is showing the same symptoms as it did without the fix for Windows. I have the nVidia graphics driver installed for Windows which allows me to see which mode I am in. • Oneiric updates cause "Window Creation Error" in Second Life client

  With the latest Oneiric updates, I've been unable to use Second Life, a virtual reality simulator, in Ubuntu. I assume it has something to do with the NVidia driver, since the error in the console says: WARNING: createWindow: LLWindowManager::create() : Error creating window. WARNING: LLViewerWindow: Failed to create window, to be shutting Down, be sure your graphics driver is updated I guess I could file a bug on Launchpad, but I'm not sure where to file it. Does anyone have any insight into what may be causing this problem? It was working fine a week ago, and older viewers (Imprudence viewer anyway) still work fine.

  How can I get Unity working under an ATI Radeon X1600 PCI-E on Ubuntu 12.04? I'm rather Windows guy, but I can do some things with CLI. ATI seems to have ended support for this card for both Windows and Linux. Theres no proper driver in jockey; binary driver from Software Center doesn't give Unity, just Unity 2D. Yes, I've tried the commands from this post - without any positive results; should I try installing drivers manually?

• Windows 8 on my new i7 Macbook Pro

  Using bootcamp I installed Windows 8 on my new Macbook Pro 15" (not a retina screen version), which has OS X 10.8.2, 2.6 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB RAM.  I followed the simple procedure outlined here. The only problem I had was the wireless device driver wasn't provided. I had to find and download it myself. Even so it only provided 5G not 2G protocol support. I downloaded a Broadcom driver.   I was able to enable the Hyper-V features on Windows 8 and look forward to using VMs. So far so good :)

• How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time.   Hey all, I am trying to put together a query that will display one specific record (found by the record's primary ID) at the top, and display all other records below it, sorted by date (I have "date_added" as one of the fields in the table, in addition to primary ID). I could do this with a UNION (first select would locate the record I want, and the other select would display all other records), but I'm wondering if is there perhaps a better way? I'm using Oracle, by the way.

• Python OpenGL Can't Redraw Scene

  I'm getting started with OpenGL and shaders using GLUT and PyOpenGL. I can draw a basic scene but for some reason I can't get it to update. E.g. any changes I make during idle(), display(), or reshape() are not reflected.   Being first to try Ubuntu. But Where are my Hard Drives/Local Disks on the COMPUTER/System Folder in Ubuntu 12.04?! Before installing 12.04 i had tried the Ubuntu 10.10 Version Live and it was perfect in showing my Local Disks. But it couldn't recognize my GTX 470 Graphics driver so i thought of trying the recent version i.e 12.04. Fortunately it solved the Graphics driver thing but now i am stuck with finding My Local Disks on 12.04. I am sorry if this is a silly question, but i know nothing of Ubuntu at the moment. Regards,

• How well supported is the ATI graphics on a Sony VAIO SA?

  This is the first time i will be buying a laptop/desktop to use as a Ubuntu platform with ATI. Now i did notice a while back that ATI drivers were not in cahoots with Linux as of yet. I am just wondering if any one is still experiencing ATI issues, or this is no longer the case. I am looking to spend money on a laptop Upgrade, but I don't want to spend a screw load of money just to find out I can only use windows and my Graphics driver does not work. • Optimized 2D Tile Scrolling in OpenGL

  Hello, I'm developing a 2D sidescrolling game and I need to optimize my tiling code to get a better frame rate. As of right now I'm using a texture atlas and 16x16 tiles for 480x320 screen resolution. The level scrolls in both directions, and is significantly larger than 1 screen (thousands of pixels). I use glTranslate for the actual scrolling. So far I've tried: Drawing only the on-screen tiles using glTriangles, 2 per square tile (too much overhead) Drawing the entire map as a Display List (great on a small level, way to slow on a large one) Partitioning the map into Display Lists half the size of the screen, then culling display lists (still slows down for 2-directional scrolling, overdraw is not efficient) Any advice is appreciated, but in particular I'm wondering: I've seen Vertex Arrays/VBOs suggested for this because they're dynamic. What's the best way to take advantage of this? If I simply keep 1 screen of vertices plus a bit of overdraw, I'd have to recopy the array every few frames to account for the change in relative coordinates (shift everything over and add the new rows/columns). If I use more overdraw this doesn't seem like a big win; it's like the half-screen display list idea. Does glScissor give any gain if used on a bunch of small tiles like this, be it a display list or a vertex array/VBO Would it be better just to build the level out of large textures and then use glScissor? Would losing the memory saving of tiling be an issue for mobile development if I do this (just curious, I'm currently on a PC)? This approach was mentioned here Thanks :)
