• For buffer overflows, what is the stack address when using pthreads?

  I'm taking a class in computer security and there is an extra credit assignment to insert executable code into a buffer overflow. I have the c source code for the target program I'm trying to manipulate, and I've gotten to the point where I can successfully overwrite the eip for the current function stack frame. However, I always get a Segmentation fault, because the address I supply is always wrong. The problem is that the current function is inside a pthread, and therefore, the address of the stack seems to always change between different runs of the program. Is there any method for finding the stack address within a pthread (or for estimating the stack address within a pthread)? (note: pthread_create's 2nd argument is null, so we're not manually assigning a stack address)

• Is it safe to delete the "ipch" folder - Precompiled headers?

  Hello, I was looking through the folder for an application I am working on and noticed the "ipch" folder, for my solution which has two small projects it weighs in at about 90mb+ in size. I have found an article discussing the use for the files and was wondering if they were safe to delete? It's for an assignment hand in and I would like to keep the electronic hand in as small as possible. If I were to delete the folder will the application remain in a safe and stable state?   I am trying to make a little ball that rolls around based on the accelerometer values in the iPhone. • Running JUnit test classes from another JUnit test class

  I have two classes that I am testing (let's call them ClassA and ClassB). Each has its own JUnit test class (testClassA and testClassB respectively). ClassA relies on ClassB for its normal functioning, so I want to make sure ClassB passes its tests before running testClassA (otherwise the results from testClassA would be meaningless). What is the best way to do this? In this case it is for an assignment so I need to keep it to the two specified test classes if possible. Can/should I throw an exception from testClassA if testClassB's tests aren't all passed? This would require testClassB to run invisibly and just report its success/failure to testClassA, rather than to the GUI (via JUnit). I am using Eclipse and JUnit 4.8.1

• How to convert a JSON string to a Map<String, String> with Jackson JSON

  This is my first time trying to do something useful with Java.. I'm trying to do something like this but it doesn't work: Map<String, String> propertyMap = new HashMap<String, String>(); propertyMap = JacksonUtils.fromJSON(properties, Map.class); But the IDE says: 'Unchecked assignment Map to Map<String,String>' What's the right way to do this? I'm only using Jackson because that's what is already available in the project, is there a native Java way of converting to/from JSON? In PHP I would simply json_decode($str) and I'd get back an array. I need basically the same thing here. Thanks!

• Converting cv::Mat to IplImage*

  The documentation on this seems incredibly spotty. I've basically got an empty array of IplImage*s (IplImage** imageArray) and I'm calling a function to import an array of cv::Mats - I want to convert my cv::Mat into an IplImage* so I can copy it into the array. Currently I'm trying this: while(loop over cv::Mat array) { IplImage* xyz = &(IplImage(array[i])); cvCopy(iplimagearray[i], xyz); } Which generates a segfault. Also trying: while(loop over cv::Mat array) { IplImage* xyz; xyz = &array[i]; cvCopy(iplimagearray[i], xyz); } Which gives me a compile time error of: error: cannot convert ‘cv::Mat*’ to ‘IplImage*’ in assignment Stuck as to how I can go further and would appreciate some advice :)

  I'm working on a homework assignment to modify code given by my professor using LightWeight Java Game Library. The problem is that I can't fully load the test code to begin testing modifications. I've linked against the jar file as it says to in the modifications, but I still have one lingering error. The import statement import org.lwjgl.util.glu.*; Cannot be resolved, so I have errors on the following lines, spread throughout the code: textures[0] = GLApp.makeTexture("green.bmp"); GLU.gluPerspective(45.0f, (float)Display.getDisplayMode().getWidth() / (float)Display.getDisplayMode().getHeight(), 0.1f, 100.0f); GLU.gluLookAt(cameraX, cameraY, cameraZ, lookX, lookY, lookZ, 0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f);` Any ideas on what is going wrong?

  Hi, this is for an assignment so I'm not looking for code. I have to simulate a game where each player has turns and needs to 'pay attention' to what's going on. So far, i know I'll need two threads for each player, one that will sleep until the player's turn and the other paying attention. My question is: Should I work each player as a 'fork' and the threads on the fork, or just create some threads for the player and associate them somehow? It's the first time I've worked with concurrency, semaphores and threads so I'm not sure about the good practices and programming style. Thanks!

• Date object to Calendar [Java]

  Hello World, I have a class Movie in it i have a start Date, a duration and a stop Date. Start and stop Date are Date Objects (private Date startDate ...) (It's an assignment so i cant change that) now i want to automatically calculate the stopDate by adding the duration (in min) to the startDate. By my knowledge working with the time manipulating functions of Date is deprecated hence bad practice but on the other side i see no way to convert the Date object to a calendar object in order to manipulate the time and reconvert it to a Date object. Is there a way? And if there is what would be best practice Thanks in advance Samuel

  Hi, There is a couple of hours that I'm trying to set a tableView background image. My controller is a subclass of UITableViewController, and I simply wrote this lines of code in ViewDidLoad method. UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"home-portrait-iphone.png"]; UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; self.tableView.backgroundView = imageView; Everything looks great on the simulator, I mean, I see my table and as background view, y can see the image. But when the app is running on the device (ipod touch), I get this error: Program received signal: “SIGABRT”. and the stack says: * -[UITableView setBackgroundView:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x812e00 Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '** -[UITableView setBackgroundView:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x812e00' and the exception is thrown in the assignment, a mean this line: self.tableView.backgroundView = imageView; any ideas? • What is an efficient way to write password cracking algorithm (python)

  This problem might be relatively simple, but I'm given two text files. One text file contains all encrypted passwords encrypted via crypt.crypt in python. The other list contains over 400k+ normal dictionary words. The assignment is that given 3 different functions which transform strings from their normal case to all different permutations of capitalizations, transforms a letter to a number (if it looks alike, e.g. G - 6, B - 8), and reverses a string. The thing is that given the 10 - 20 encrypted passwords in the password file, what is the most efficient way to get the fastest running solution in python to run those functions on dictionary word in the words file? It is given that all those words, when transformed in whatever way, will encrypt to a password in the password file. Here is the function which checks if a given string, when encrypted, is the same as the encrypted password passed in: def check_pass(plaintext,encrypted): crypted_pass = crypt.crypt(plaintext,encrypted) if crypted_pass == encrypted: return True else: return False Thanks in advance.

• Just quick: How do you call a mutator from within a constructor in the same class?

  For a homework assignment the instructions state (within Undergrad class): You do NOT need to include a default constructor, but you must write a full parameterized constructor (it takes 4 arguments) -- this constructor calls the parent class parameterized constructor and the mutator for year level. Because Undergrad extends Student, then Student is my parent class, right? I just can't quite figure out how I'm to use my year level mutator (which is just the simplest of methods) to assign my "year" attribute. public void setYear(int inYear) { year = inYear; } public Student(String inName, String inID, int inCredits) { name = inName; id = inID; credits = inCredits; } public Undergrad(String inName, String inID, int inCredits,int inYear) { super(inName, inID, inCredits); year = inYear; } I keep missing assignments because I spend too much time on these small specific points of the homework so just asking for a little help. I swear it's the wording that throws me off on these assignments almost as often as just learning the material itself.

Anonymous type members must be declared with a member assignment, simple name or member access. It works when I use data_details, but I guess it need to be starting with "data-" as per the spec. My questions: Is there any way to get this working and use HTML5 data attributes with Html.ActionLink or similar Html helpers ? Is there any other alternative mechanism to attach custom data to an element? This data is to be processed later by JS.

• C# Conditional Operator Not a Statement?

  I have a simple little code fragment that is frustrating me: HashSet<long> groupUIDs = new HashSet<long>(); groupUIDs.Add(uid)? unique++ : dupes++; At compile time, it generates the error: Only assignment, call, increment, decrement, and new object expressions can be used as a statement HashSet.Add is documented to return a bool, so the ternary (?) operator should work, and this looks like a completely legitimate way to track the number of unique and duplicate items I add to a hash-set. When I reformat it as a if-then-else, it works fine. Can anyone explain the error, and if there is a way to do this as a simple ternary operator?

• A question about "empty" lists in Python

  I've started teaching myself Python, and as an exercise I've set myself the task of generating lookup tables I need for another project. I need to generate a list of 256 elements in which each element is the value of math.sin(2pi/256). The problem is I don't know how to generate a list initialized to "dummy" values that I can then use a for loop to step through and assign the values of the sin function. Using list[] seems to create an "empty" list, but with no elements so I get a "list assignment index out of range" error in the loop. Is there a way to this other than explicitly creating a list declaration containing 256 elements all with "0" as a value? Thanks!

But I didn't get it, what will I have to modify to get the code working?

  Hi, I have an assignment about uploading and downloading a file to a server. I managed to do the uploading part using Java Sockets however I am having a hard time doing the downloading part. I should use Range: for downloading parellel. In my request, I should have the Range: header. But I don't understand how I will receive the file with that HTTP GET request. All the examples I have seen was about uploading a file. I already did it. I can upload .exe, image, .pdf, anything and when I download them back (by my browser), there are no errors.   I'm trying to send a very long binary integer over UDP (on the order of 200 bits). When I try to use Array's pack method, it complains the string I'm trying to convert is too large. • I'm working on Peano Axioms in Agda and I've hit a bit of a sticking point

  PA6 : ?{m n} -> m = n -> n = m is the axiom I am trying to solve and support, I've tried using a cong (from the core library) but am having troubles with the cong constructor PA6 = cong gets me nowhere, I know for cong I am required to supply a refl for equality and a type, but I'm, not sure what type I'm supposed to supply. Ideas? This is for a small assignment at University, so I'd rather someone demonstrate what I've missed rather than write the acutual answer, but I'd appreciate any degree of support.
