• Puppet claims to be unable to resolve domains even if domain properly resolves

  I have a fairly simple puppet setup, one master and one node, both running Debian Squeeze 6.0.4. I have DNS entries for the two machines, client and master respectively. Both client and master's DNS entries resolve correctly on both machines to the right IPs. • Mandatory Parameters in Request object (WCF)

  lHi, I'm currently writing a WCF service. One of those methods get's a request object and returns a response object. In the request there are a couple of value-type members. Is there a way to define members are mandatory in the declarative way? I'm in an early stage of development and I don't want to start with versioning now. In addition I don't want to have method sig with 25 parameters, therefore I created the request object. The problem I have is that due to the value-types, I can never be sure if the consumer of the service intended to have the default value in there, or it was just by lazyness. On consumer side you don't easily detect that you probably missed that property. So I would like to have something that forces the caller of the service to provide an value, and if not he ideally get's a compile-time error. any ideas? tia, Martin

  I'm using Vagrant with Chef Solo to setup a Lucid 64 box. I'm using a Chef recipe to install PostgreSQL 9.1 from Martin Pitt's backports. The install goes ok until the point where the database is started with /etc/init.d/postgresql start There's a log pause and the command fails. If I run pg_ctl manually, the database starts! • How to add exception for backup MX to tumgreyspf?

  I have an Ubuntu raring server running postfix/dovecot as an email server, with tumgreyspf doing greylisting and SPF checks. My problem is that I also have a backup MX server, that is supposed to store my emails temporarily, should my main server ever fails. It usually rejects receiving emails if it finds the main server online and functional. • VMWare Converter recommendations

  I have two Ghost 14 backups of my machine. One for the machine fully configured with apps after and XP install and one of the last update before i re-imaged it (it's XP, I re-image about once every six months). I recently wanted to try simply using my initial image in a virtual environment to do my testing that generally causes me to need to re-image. I used the VMWare converter to convert the Ghost images to a virtual machine to use in Virtual box but they fail to properly boot. They get stuck after the bios loads and windows begins loading. If I power down the machine and refire it it will go to the error screen in windows that asks if you would like to boot to a different mode. none selected make any difference. What are some possible errors I should look for in the conversion process or in my settings for the converter?

• Recommendations for stable, reliable flash drives

  We're looking to purchase some flash drives for use in some embedded devices. Most of our requirements aren't too different the generic "good, fast" flash drive: reliability is very important, speed is good, and so that the drive will fit, the case shouldn't be too large (so no OCZ Throttles). Consistency is also a major priority; we'd like to be able to buy more or less the same product a year or two from now without having to worry about the manufacturer swapping drive components with less reliable or slower parts. (We've been burned already by our previous manufacturer doing this.) Any recommendations, especially regarding consistency? I can read Ars Technica to get an overview of current models, but what are consistently good models?

• Programs still opening websites through Google Chrome, despite its removal

  Even after I've uninstalled Google Chrome, when other programs want to open a website (e.g.: Yahoo! Messenger getting a profile) they will still attempt to do so through Chrome, and fail looking for it. I've read all the advice on how to make Firefox or IE for Windows 7 the default browser. I don't think Google would do this sort of "hijack the default browser" thing and I'm convinced it must be a trojan or virus or even a registry hack. If so, any ideas on how I would go about fixing this without purchasing every virus/trojan program until it was removed? That method could be an expensive fix.

• Is there a way to correct wrongly typed password / abort the operation while on password prompt in the console in MINGW32?

  I sometimes mistype a password when being asked for it, e.g. by Git when pushing to remote repository. The password is not displayed (even masked as asterisks) in the console. Is there a way either to correct the password, or to abort the operation? Backspace for editing and CtrlC for aborting do not seem to work. I want to save some time instead of waiting for the remote authentication to fail, or providing a bad password, then Enter, CtrlC. Edit: Unfortunately CtrlU doesn't work for me (MINGW32 @ Windows XP). Any other guesses?

• Removing vg and lv after physical drive has been removed

  We had a disk fail and replace but forgot to vgreduce first. I have no experience with version control systems except of using Visual Source Safe in a project done by 2 people sitting in front of each other (which has shown VSS quite sack of boulders, not anything useful). Right now I am looking to grok-in using some modern VCS. Here are the preferences in descending priority order: Platform-agnostic. Pretty pleasant to use With Visual Studio 2010 on Windows as well as With NetBeans 6.9 and Eclipse 3.6 on Linux and Mac. Convenient and efficient for mutually-dependent projects done by teams of 1-10 and consisting of files of quite a diverse selection of types. Including early-stage projects with unstable design and experimenting. Modern. As fresh and future-technology-feature-rich as possible. Free & open-source. Should I take a closer look at SVN, Mercurial, GIT, Bazaar, or something else?

• Impossible to stop raid device

  I'm trying to stop a RAID disk in order to replace it by a new one, as this one is not working properly. I'm typing mdadm --stop /dev/md1, and I'm getting an error message: mdadm: fail to stop array /dev/md1: Device or resource busy I'm getting this message even if I reboot the server, and I can't see a process that could cause this. The server is working under a Debian with a 2.6.18-4-amd64 kernel. Could you help? Edit: Mote details about what my colleague tried out. After unmounting sda1, the command mdadm --remove /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 worked. But now, we still have an error message after mdadm --remove /dev/md1 /dev/sda5: mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sda5: Device or resource busy I still don't understand completly how the different partitions are mounted, so I suppose there is something I don't understand in the currenct situation...

• Display current layout WITHOUT using Windows's language bar

  Basically I love quick launch and pinning is not for me, I can't just pin 50 apps, nor pin them to start menu / use the win + type method. Anyway, Quick Launch works perfectly under Win7 IF you don't use the language bar. If you use it, sometimes (or always) it may fail to start/appear, you have to readd it. So my question is: Is there a tray app, a RainMeter way to show this? (First would be better). Thanks. (Best would be if I could switch layout globally but that train is gone. (Look at the changing global layout. Thank you Microsoft. (Irony included)).

• Sharing soundcard to network.

  Let's suppose I have a laptop (L) and desktop PC (D), both with Windows 7 onboard. It is SB X-Fi extreme soundcard with rather good 5.1 home theater connected. But it is not comfortable to watch video sitting on the sofa from my desktop (sofa is in the center of the room and D is in the corner), even though it is 23" monitor. So I'm watching everything from the laptop. So the question - is it possible somehow to "share" soundcard from D to L, so I will watch the video from notebook and listen the sound from the 5.1? L and D are connected via wi-fi (fast enough).

• PC won't boot / USB and PS2 keyboards don't work

  My brother's PC has stopped working. He now cannot boot into windows, and he can't access BIOS by pressing the DEL key as no keyboards work. He has tried 4 different keyboards, one of which is PS/2. He tried the USB keyboards on all the USB ports. I don't know why the BIOS would show the message "Floppy disks fail (40)", as there is no floppy disk drive in the PC. He has upgraded from XP to Vista (yes that's right, upgraded keeping the XP drivers, eyes roll). A BSOD occurred in Vista while he was browsing files. What steps should be taken to troubleshoot the problem?

• slow DNS resolution

  I have a DNS server that resolves all queries for an internal group of servers. It is a bind on CentOS 5.5 (same as RHEL5) and I have set it up to allow recursion and resolve direction without any forwarders. The problem I am facing is that it takes a freakishly long amount of time to resolve a name for the first time. (in the magnitudes of 20 sec) This causes clients to give timeout. When I set it to forward all to Google's public DNS, i.e. 8.8.8.8+8.8.4.4, it works very nicely (within a second). Interestingly, when I dig directly from the root servers that did not respond, the always respond very fast (showing the firewall/nat is not the issue here). E.g. dig www.paypal.com @192.35.51.30 works perfectly, consistently, and very fast. What do you think about this mystery?

• SQL 2008 R2 3rd Party Peer-to-Peer Replication, Global Site Distribution

  We are looking at hosting 3 globally distributed SQL Server installations at different data centers. The intent is that Site A will serve web traffic and data for a specific region, same with Site B and C. In the case that Site A data center goes down, looses connectivity, etc. the users of Site A users will fail over to Site B or C (depending which is up). Also, if a user from Site A travels to Site C they should be able to access their data as it was on Site A. My questions is what SQL replication technology (SQL Replication or 3rd party) can support this scenario? We are using SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise at each site, each site runs on top of VMWare with a Netapp filer. Would something like distributed caching help in this scenario as well? We have looked at and tested Peer-to-Peer replication but have encountered issues with conflicts during our testing. I imagine there are other global data centers that have encountered and solved this issue.

• How to choose a web server for a Python application?

  Information and prerequisites: I have a project which is, at its core, a basic CRUD application. It doesn't have long running background processes which it forks at the beginning and talks to later on, nor does it have long running queries or kept alive connection requirements. It receives a request, makes some queries to the database and then responds. In order to serve static files and cachable files fast, I am going to use Varnish in all cases. Here is my question: After reading about various Python web application servers, I have seen that they all have their "fans" for certain, usually "personal" reasons, which got me confused since each usecase differs from the next. How can I learn about the core differentiating factors of Python web servers (in order) to decide how suitable they are for my project and if one would be better than the other? What are your (technically provable) thoughts on the matter? How should I choose a Python web server? Thank you.

However, when I try to install them, for example: sudo apt-get install libisc44 I get some response that this package is missing and/or it may be part of another package. I'm not exactly sure what I should do. I don't want to reinstall ubuntu, since I have it dual booted with Windows Vista and I don't want to risk anything on the Windows partition.   Ok...so for some reason by Ubuntu 10.04 partition won't startup anymore. I'm not exactly sure what I did. I have the feeling that I accidentally removed some important packages. However, when I try to install them, for example: sudo apt-get install libisc44 I get some response that this package is missing and/or it may be part of another package. I'm not exactly sure what I should do. I don't want to reinstall ubuntu, since I have it dual booted with Windows Vista and I don't want to risk anything on the Windows partition. • EMC CX3-10c Fault Condition won;t clear

  We have an old CX3-10c from Dell that had both Standby Power Supplies (SPS) fail. This obviously caused a fault on the system and disabled the cache. We have replaced the SPS's and they test fine as do all other components. Problem is there is still a fault on the "Enclosure SPE [SPE3]" despite all the component in the enclosure showing as good. I was on the line with Dell Gold support for 3 hours yesterday, they have had me restart the SPs multiple times, as well as reseat the power supplies, even shutdown the system completely and power it back on. All to no avail. Fault remains and cache cannot be re-enabled so long as the Fault is present. Any suggestions on clearing this erroneous fault?

• Web design process with CSS - during or after?

  Which is the better practice? Add CSS during web designing you can see the result (or close) as early as possible and make required changes. You also know how many divs or spans you might need (eg to make curved cross-browser hover background). But as you add more and more components to the page sometimes things get hack-ish as you need to patch here and there to get the exact design required. Add CSS after finishing page design you can see the page overall structure as it is well, without styles. You get to see how accessible your site is, and modify it right away if it's not good enough (unlike the former case where you may break multiple CSS rules). Plus after you finished it, you only need to spend most of the time to alter only the CSS file, which is good to get the momentum going. Granted I have never tried the latter approach, but am seriously considering it for my next project if I can see convincing reasons -- or if it's no good at all. Thanks.

• HP DL370 G6 expansion

  Hi, we are running a HP DL370 server with 6 x 300 gb disks on RAID 5. Due to a Windows update causing our server to fail recently, we couldn't access the data. I now want to separate the data from the OS (Windows server 2008 r2) so that if anything like that happens again, we can route everyone through a separate server. I have seen these HP storageworks enclosures (msa70) and have a couple of questions: Can I just take out our 2.5 inch 10k SAS drives, install them in the new Storageworks NAS and hey presto we would be up and running? If I wanted to then add another drive (I think there are 25 bays), can I just insert a blank but identical drive and the RAID 5 would dynamically expand to incorporate the new drive. I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. How do I debug and test OpenGL on m Ubuntu 10.04 installation?
