• Last step in HDD Recovery (fixing windows)

  My dad’s hard drive corrupted which was a result of many bad sectors. Anyway, I made a clone of the drive and have now repaired it totally (recreating the MBR and MFT) and doing a series of ChkDsk's on it. I can now see all the files and folder on it and it is all intact. I currently have it as a slave in my computer (where I was doing all the repairs). When putting it back into the computer, it comes up with "A disk read error occurred: Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to Restart". I don’t know why this is happening but think it might have something to do with file permissions. I have tried a start-up recovery on the Vista boot CD and it found no problems. When trying to apply file permissions (and creating file perms for the SYSTEM group (as it didn’t have any for SYSTEM group)) it couldn't apply them for some of the System32 folder files. I have tried applying them as admin and with as powerful privileges I can get. All to no avail. When it is in my PC I can boot it up (I added it into my bootloader) and it boots up fine except when it logs in it comes up with the error - "Rundll32.exe - Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" This message keeps coming back and nothing loads at all. Any help would be greatly received as I have got so far with the data recovery and want to avoid a reformat at all costs due to the vast number of programs installed and I don’t have much time on my hands! • MySQL Tables Missing/Corrupt After Recreation

  Hi, Yesterday I dumped my MySQL databases to an SQL file and renamed the ibdata1 file. I then recreated it and imported the SQL file and moved the new ibdata1 file to my MySQL data directory, deleting the old one. I’ve done it before without issue, however this time something is not right. When I examine the (personal, not MySQL config) databases, they are all there, but they are empty… sort of. The data directory still has the .ibd files with the correct content in them and I can view the table list in the databases, but not the tables themselves. (I have file-per-table enabled, and am using InnoDB as default for everything.) For example with the urls database and its urls table, I can successfully open mysql.exe or phpMyAdmin and use urls;. I can even show tables; to see the expected table, but then when I try to describe urls; or select * from urls;, it complains that the table does not exist (even though it just listed it). (The MySQL Administrator lists the databases, but does not even list the tables, it indicates that the dbs are completely empty.) The problem now is that I have already deleted the SQL file (and cannot recover it even after scouring my hard-drive). So I am trying to figure out a way to repair these databases/tables. I can’t use the table repair function since it complains that the table does not exist, and I can’t dump them because again, it complains that the tables don’t exist. Like I’ve said, the data itself is still present in the .ibd files and the table names are present. I just need a way to get MySQL to recognize that the tables exist in the databases (I can find the column names of the tables in question in the ibdata1 file using a hex-editor). Any idea how I can repair this type of corruption? I don’t mind rolling up my sleeves, digging in, and taking a bunch of steps to fix it. Thanks a lot.

• Windows 7 automatically logs out when logging in

  A Windows 7 HP x64 computer is set to automatically log in (no password), but once it starts logging in, it starts to load the desktop after the welcome screen, but before icons or background images are loaded, it goes to the Welcome screen saying 'Logging Off'. I can log in with Safe Mode, and I ran a couple different virus scans, with no detections. I also tried checking the userinit.exe file in System32 (as suggested by MANY users for Windows XP), but it's the same version as a working system. I also checked the registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon for the SHELL and UserInit values, but they look normal. I tried to disable all startup items (through MSCONFIG) to select Diagnostic boot, but then I get a blue screen about the video driver not loading. Any other ideas? EDIT I created a new user, and it could log in no problems. I am thinking it's the NTUSER.DAT file. I just renamed it to NTUSER.DAT.old, then tried logging in as the problem user. I could log in, but as a TEMP profile. His profile folder is now C:\Users\TEMP, and his old folder is still accessible but in the wrong location. EDIT 2 I can't seem to turn off the TEMP profile, so I'm open to other suggestions. Copying the folders (i.e. Documents, Music, etc) does not work, as it creates an additional TEMP.000 then TEMP.001 folder each time the user logs in.

• Migrating ODBC information through a batch file

  I am a desktop support technician currently working on a large scale migration project across multiple sites. I am looking at a way to transfer ODBC entries from Windows XP to Windows 7. If anyone knows of a program or anything prebuilt that already does this, please redirect me. I've already looked but haven't found anything, so I'm trying to build my own. I know enough basic programming to read the work of others and monkey around with something that already exists, but not much else. I have come across a custom batch file written at one site that (among other things) exports ODBC information from the old computer and stores it on a server (labelled as y: through net use at the beginning of the file), then later transfers it from the server to a new computer. The pre-existing code is for Windows XP to XP migrations. Here are the pertinate bits of code: echo Exporting ODBC Information start /wait regedit.exe /e "y:\%username%\odbc.reg" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI (and later on) echo Importing ODBC start /wait regedit /s "y:\%username%\odbc.reg" We are now migrating from Windows XP to 7, and this part of the batch file still seems to work for this particular site, where Oracle 8i and 10g are used. I'm looking to use my cut down version of this code at multiple sites, and I'm wondering if the same lines of code will still work for anything other than Oracle. Also, my research on this issue has shown that there are different locations in 64 bit operating systems for 32/64 bit entries, and I'm wondering what effect that would have on the code. Could I copy the same data to both parts of the registry, in hopes of catching everything? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

• Allow members of a group to be unlocked by a specific account on AD

  Background I'm creating a service to allow support staff to enable their firecall accounts out of hours (i.e. if there's an issue in the night and we can't get hold of someone with admin rights, another member of the support team can enable their personal firecall account on AD, which has previously been setup with admin rights). This service also logs a reason for the change, alerts key people, and a bunch of other bits to ensure that this change of access is audited / so we can ensure these temporary admin rights are used in the proper way. To do this I need the service account which my service runs under to have permissions to enable users on active directory. Ideally I'd like to lock this down so that the service account can only enable/disable users in a particular AD security group. Question How do you grant access to an account to enable/disable users who are members of a particular security group in AD? Backup Question If it's not possible to do this by security group, is there a suitable alternative? i.e. could it be done by OU, or would it be best to write a script to loop through all members of the security group and update the permissions on the objects (firecall accounts) themselves? • Nginx Config - I can't access WordPress admin area

  I am a complete noob when it comes to Nginx, but I'm trying to make the switch over for my WordPress site. Everything works, even the permalink, but I can't access my WordPress admin directory (I get a 403 error). I have my WordPress install in a subfolder, so that complicates things a bit for me. • Euro character messed up during FTP transfer

  My customer is using a very outdated ecommerce management system on my hosting service. For that product, no support is being provided anymore by the vendor. Brief explanation: the shop website, that claims to run under LAMP stack, is built by an old Visual Basic Windows application running on MS Access. The user constructs the shop, defines the HTML template, adds products and categories, etc. Then the VB exe builds the PHP pages (one for each template page) and the SQL script to run on MySQL. It also uploads everything via FTP and runs the installation/upgrade script on its own. The problem Browsing the website, many products' descriptions are cut before the euro sign. For example, what was supposed to be "Product price €1000" becomes "Product price" The analysis MySQL contains a cutted description until the € sign, so it's not PHP fault The Access databases contain full description with € sign, so it's not fault of the webmaster writing bad description or eDisplay cutting them The SQL that will run once the site gets uploaded, stored on my local machine before upload, contains the € sign The same script, after being FTPed by eDisplay and opened with nano from SSH, shows the € sign messed up like this: ^À vsftpd log reports (obfuscated for privacy) Sat Dec 15 11:16:57 2012 22 xxx.xxx.128.13 1112727 /srv/www/domains/xxxxxx.it/htdocs/db.sql b _ i r xxxxxxx ftp 0 * c which seems to be a binary transfer (and also a huge security vulnerability because you can download the whole database from unauthenticated HTTP) The eDisplay internal FTP client provides no option for ascii/binary transfer modes [Add] Trying to manually upload the SQL file via SFTP shows messing up euro [Add2] Trying to manually upload using Xftp client with explicit ASCII mode doesn't fix too It looks like the file gets uploaded as binary. • Silent install of Japanese Language Pack in Win7

  Every year, due to re-imaging, I am forced to find a way to install the Japanese language pack on a collection of 30 computers. Each year I look for a way to automate this process, and each year I am forced to do this manually. Maybe this year will be different. Has anyone had any luck with installing and configuring far east language support for windows 7 without user interaction? I have already downloaded kb972813 and have a way to get it out to the computers. What I normally do is this: Run the EXE, use the default settings. Open up language settings and create the JP keyboard. Configure the language bar settings. Copy settings to default user. Delete the local user cache. Sign the different user accounts in to make sure that the default settings are correct. This whole process takes about 10 minutes, multiply that out by 30 machines and you are looking at a 5 hour process. If I can log into all of the computers at once, I can normally cut that down to about an hour. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

• Utilu IE Collection IE6 crashes under Windows 7

  I've installed Utilu IE Collection under Windows 7 64-bit, but am unable to successfully run IE6 (specifically, "Internet Explorer 6.0 (6.00.2900.2180)"). I haven't tried other versions of IE from the package, so their behavior is unknown. It starts up fine, but the address bar isn't shown. (Attempted to post image, but I'm a newbie on SU and it wouldn't let me. Can be found here.) View-Toolbars shows 'Address Bar' already selected. • Snort not detecting outgoing traffic

  I'm using Snort 2.9 on windows server 2008 R2 x64, with a very simple configuration that goes like this: # Entire content of Snort.conf: alert tcp any any -> any any (sid:5000000; content:"_secret_"; msg:"TRIGGERED";) # command line: snort.exe -c etc/Snort.conf -l etc/log -A console Using my browser, I send the string "_secret_" in the url to my server (where Snort is located). Example: http://myserver.com/index.php?_secret_ Snort receives it and throws an alert, it works, no problem ! But when I try something like this : <?php // (index.php) header('XTest: _secret_'); // header echo '_secret_'; // data ?> If I just request http://myserver.com/index.php, it does not work or detect anything from the outgoing traffic even though the php file is sending the same string both in headers and in data, with no compression/encoding or whatsoever. (I checked using Wireshark) This looks to me like a Snort problem. No matter what I do it only detects receiving packets. Did anyone ever face this sort of problems with Snort ? Any idea how to fix it ?

  For some reason, some script or program is removing a pid file for the service on the linux server (centos5.4 / 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5xen). I suspect a faulty cron script, but manual investigation did not lead me to it. And i still want to track it down. Imagine a cron script deleting the file. So i need some way to expand/add audit rule(s) to be able to trace the parents of the /bin/rm at the time of removal. I have been thinking to add some rule to monitor all process creation, something like: auditctl -a task,always But this happen to be very resource intensive. So i need help or advice how to combine these rules, or how to expand any of the rules to help track the script/program. Thanks.

• Why is my browser using so much memory?

  Hi. I've recently had problems with Firefox running very slowly when I have many tabs open; say 20 tabs. My whole system would slow down. I decided to give Google Chrome a try, and it started out fine. But lately I am finding that it too, slows down my whole system. Looking at Task Manager, chrome.exe is using about 250MB of memory in about 6 different entries in task manager. However, when I shut Chrome down, memory usage is reduced by about 600MB. How can this be? (shows drop in memory usage after ending Chrome.) When my system locks up with Chrome having many tabs open, it takes 10 seconds to load the Start Menu, 10 seconds to expand All Programs, and each folder and subfolder, and 30 seconds for the program to be highlighted under my mouse. It also takes 10 seconds to switch to Notepad. Why is Chrome appearing to use so much more memory than Task Manager indicates? Why is my pagefile being used when I have around 1.1GB of memory? Can I set Chrome to run in RAM and not in the pagefile? How can 20 tabs use 600MB? That's 30MB per tab. Thanks for your help.

• I can't change mysql port (5.6.12) changing the lines of my.ini (windows 8)

  I was trying to change the port of my mysql server in my local machine but i can't. The version of mysql is 5.6.12, is an installation from wamp and I am on Windows 8. I change these lines in my my.ini file located in (C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12). [client] #password = your_password port = 3307 socket = /tmp/mysql.sock [wampmysqld] port = 3307 socket = /tmp/mysql.sock key_buffer = 16M max_allowed_packet = 1M The previous values were 3306. Ok then I've reset the server installed, but it doesn't works, the mysql server is still running on 3306. Then, I rename the path of the services with this, to make sure that the my.ini is read by the mysql instance. c:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\bin\mysqld.exe --defaults-file="C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\my.ini" wampmysqld But nothing, it stil doesn't works. My last bullet was to copy the content of my.ini to a file my-default.ini (a file that is placed in C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\ and that I don't know what is its mission). However it still doesn't work and the port is still 3306.

• Java games applet not connecting to Yahoo

  Hi. I am trying to play a Y! game which use a java applet. The applet displays the message: Alert. Unable to connect to server. One of four things could have caused this: 1) You are behind a firewall. 2) You are not connected to the internet. 3) The games server is down. 4) You have a stale page in your cache. I have added an exception to the Windows firewall for java.exe. I am obviously connected to the Internet okay. The games server is not down when I am at home. I doubt it is down when I am at work. I have never successfully loaded this page before, so I doubt I have a stale page in cache. Could it be the corporate firewall? Nothing else in my web browser has been blocked before. Maybe the java applet connects on a different port to the browser. What should I test?

• Identifying Exchange 2010 regular process that is walking the mailbox database

  I have an Exchange 2010 server running on a SAN-backed platform. The platform does block-level backups based on a snapshot/incremental basis, that only capture changed data. I was surprised to see a regular period of time where the data changes were happening at a high, sustained rate. Due to the way this system works, that can lead to 1.2TB of stored data per month. The regularity implied a scheduled task, but it is not a fixed interval. It is approximately every 26-32hrs. The disks were performing read operations of ~5MB/s and write operations of ~4.5MB/s, for a period of 3-4hrs. The total written data was ~55-60GB. Reading on TechNet, I am wondering if the following is causing this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/12/14/database-maintenance-in-exchange-2010.aspx#checksumming The somewhat restrictive thing is that the process only happens at most once every 24 hours. I was able to investigate while it was running, finding the following: the process is store.exe it is working on the mailbox database files while running, it is generating .log files (in the mailbox database folder) consistent with database changes the mailbox database is ~60GB in size, which fits with the total data changes on each iteration I have currently switched to a fixed maintenance window, as a test. It's not clear whether this is the cause, as the symptoms fit, but are not conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?

• Windows - Decrypt encrypted file when user account is destroyed

  I have a Virtual Machine running on my Windows Server 2008 computer that originally was received by me encryped, as the builder of the VM did it on a MAC, which decrypts files by default. I never thought to decrypt these files, as they automatically 'decrypt' when you have permission over them, so the VM has been running for over a year despite the encryption. I just upgraded my computer to Domain Controller (dcpromo.exe). Now when I try to access/run the VM, I can't because I don't have permission to decrypt the files as that was on another logon (local administrator) and now I am the domain administrator. Apparently the local admin is totally nuked when you upgrade to domain controller. I have tried EVERYTHING - taking ownership of the files, which works. Doesn't do anything for me. Adding full control to everyone on the files. I go to File Properties Advanced Details (under encryption) Users who can access this file. The only user is administrator@localcomputername, and there is a cert number. I try adding a new cert, I don't have permission. I don't have permission to: Decrypt the file (access is denied). Copy the file (to another computer) - access denied. I am totally stumped and this VM is a production machine and needs to get up right now. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Mercurial no longer working in NetBeans?

  I have been using Mercurial inside NetBeans for a while now. For the past few weeks now Windows Explorer has been crashing for various reasons, including every time I right click. Finally someone suggested I try uninstalling TourtoiseSVN and TortoiseHG since they affect Windows Explorer directly. I uninstalled both last week since I don't ever use them (I either user the NetBeans interface or use the command line interface.) Since then my Windows Explorer stopped crashing. Today I noticed that in NetBeans it is no longer showing me any of the Mercurial features. I pull up a command prompt and its not working their either. It seems like uninstalling TortoiseHG also uninstalled Mercurial altogether, which was not intended. I went to http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/Download to download the 64bit 1.8.4 .exe version of Mercurial for Windows. I installed it, and I can now use the command line. However it is still now working in NetBeans. Does NetBeans require Tortoise to work? Is there something else I am missing?

• Driver corruption when deploying Dell Touchpad Drivers (with software) during imaging process

  We're an sccm shop, and use it to deploy Windows. When deploying Dell laptops (multiple models), the touchpad drivers seem install properly, but the software doesn't. The resulting problem is that when the touchpad is pressed on occasion, the mouse pointer will 'jump' to certain points on the screen. A possible symptom of this problem/visible sign is if the touchpad icon isn't in the system tray. The software is in the control panel, but when opened part of the gui is pixelated, indicating botched install maybe? The manual resolution to this, is to go into device manager and uninstall the driver with the option to uninstall all driver software. After a restart, the driver and software is apparently reinstalled, and from there works as expected. Obviously this partially defeats the purpose of a zero touch deployment. If anyone knows why this is and/or a possible workaround, those answers would be valid as well. Barring that, I want to find a way to deploy the driver and touchpad software in an unattended way, so that it can be conditionally installing during the imaging process. To be honest I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this, I suppose I could try drvinst.exe to install the driver, but finding out why this fails initially would keep me from spinning my wheels.

• LDAPS being redirected to 389

  We're trying to perform an LDAPS bind to a server which blocks 389 with a firewall so all traffic must travel over 636. In our test lab we're connecting to a test ldap (located on the same server) which does not have this firewall so both ports are exposed. Running ldp.exe on the test server we generate the trace below which seems to suggest that it is successfully binding over 636. However if we monitor the traffic with wireshark all the traffic is being sent to 389 with no attempt to even contact 636. Other tools will bind only with SSL on 636 or without SSL on 389 whjich seems to suggest it is behaving correctly but Wireshark shows 389. Only the test server we are using RawCap to capture the local loopback traffic. • can't change wallpaper real time regedit commands

  i'm a first time 'SuperUser' poster .. what i want is to programatically change Desktop Wallpaper every few hours .. i'm using a batch file (.bat) and don't want to use other languages or programs, just the pre-installed stuffs with Windows XP .. i've already made my script that will modify values in the Registry reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v Wallpaper /d "C:\Pictures\picture1.jpg" but it's not taking effect real time even with this command: RUNDLL32.EXE USER32.DLL,UpdatePerUserSystemParameters ,1 ,True need to reboot first to take effect. if i'm going to use Display Properties, it'll show at once. what i've noticed is that changes will take effect real time if it's a .bmp file and not for .jpg images. Second option is to convert JPG to 24-bit BMP files (to look exactly the same, but will triple the file size), but i'm hoping a better way .. i've already googled things but no avail.. i hope you (the helpful reader) can post any .bat or even vbs script to change Desktop Wallpaper instantly with JPG pictures .. hoping there's an answer without installing other apps or scripts ..

  I have tried every way I know how to get Windows 7 SP1 to install. It fails every time. Below is what looks like the relevant contents of the CBS.Log file. • File Acces\Rename Issue

  Guys, i am having serious problem with media files (only video files). When i try to rename or delete a Files or the Folders that contained media files, i get an error. "Access Denied .... Some other program might be using this file..... bla bla bla" Previously for this knida problem i had a freeware "Unlocker" that used to work. What "Unlocker" used to do was simply kill the process that is using the file. But in my case, now that is, the process using the files is "Explorer.exe" W.T.F... A strange behavior, when i copy paste the same file. The copied file, I can rename it, i can delete it, i can shit on it if i want to.... but what is wrong with the original file. Check the following list. It will give you a better idea of my situation. I am using Win XP SP 2 I have got Div Player installed (latest) The media files are from both, my hard drive, created by many of my previous window installations. And new downloaded files. So Files ownership or Privacy is not an issue. I may not be able to rename\delete those files one moment, the next moment, in the next try, i might succeed. The problem is a major F. i can't figure it out. Please F1! its getting on my nerves.

• Noob with git repository on Windows Storage Server 2008?

  I have a Western Digital Sentinel at home running Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. I have several git repositories on it for my own personal projects, and have no problem pushing and pulling over my local network. I want to be able to access those repos remotely from anywhere. I am able to log in and remotely access folders and files on it, but I cannot clone repos using the same address. • With Ubuntu 12.04 unlike 11.04 Wine installed application start menu links are missing

  With Ubuntu 12.04 and wine 1.4 unlike ubuntu 11.04 with wine 1.2.2 installed application start menu links are missing. For instance with Ubuntu 11.04 including Wine I can install one of our Windows applications and then can go to Applications Wine Programs Semantic Designs TestCoverage Documentation to bring up the documentation for how to run our tool. Unfortunately with Ubuntu 12.04 the Applications menu is gone and going to Dash I do see "Recent Apps and more apps" but my installed Wine application and related documentation link is shown present, even though the wine uninstaller shows in present. I found this online suggestion and tried using the gnome "main menu"... Windows key to launch the Dash. Enter "Main Menu" in the search field and open the old Edit Main Menu app. Select the Category (aka Unity Dash Filter) you want the item in. Name the Dash/Launcher Item Add the Command to launch said app With "mainmenu" then get down to the TestCoverage Documentation and I could see a command link in properties of .. env WINEPREFIX="/home/sdtest/.wine" wine C:\windows\command\start.exe /Unix /home/sdtest/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/sdtest/Start\ Menu/Programs/Semantic\ Designs/Test\ Coverage/Java\ 1.7\ Documentation.lnk BUT I could not execute this link to view the installed documentation. So I copied the link properties into a file, set it as executable, and ran it as a bash script and the documentation came up! So why can't I use this link under main menu?

• New i7 is slower than old Core 2 Duo? Why? (BIOS programming)

  I've always wondered why the companies who make BIOS' either have terrible engineering psychologists or none at all. But without wasting your time further with random speculative questions, my real question is as follows: Why does my new computer run slower than my old computer? Old Computer: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 3.0 Ghz (stock) 4GB OCZ DDR2 800 RAM Wolfdale E8400 mb nVidia GeForce 8600 GT New Computer: Intel Core i7 920 @ ~3.2 Ghz 6 GB OCZ DDR3 1066 RAM EVGA x58 SLI LE motherboard nVidia GeForce GTX 275 Vista x64 Home Premium on both. "Run slower" is defined as: - poorer FPS performance in the same games, applications - takes longer to start up - general desktop usage (checking email, opening up files, running exe's) is noticeably slower At first I thought I must've not set something up in the BIOS or something. But I have no idea how to set anything in the bios except for "Dummy O.C.", which brought me to ~3.2 Ghz. But beyond that I have no idea. I've been reading stuff about "ram timing" and voltages and the like but I really have no idea about that stuff. I'm a psychologist who has a basic understanding in building his own computers, not a computer scientist. Can someone give me some wisdom that might guide me to the reason my new computer is worse than my older one? I'm sorry if this is a bad question, or not appropriate to SO. I'm just pretty frustrated now and you all have helped me in the past so I figured I'd give it a shot. Thanks for your time.
