• OutOfMemoryException Processing Large File

  We are loading a large flat file into BizTalk Server 2006 (Original release, not R2) - about 125 MB. We run a map against it and then take each row and make a call out to a stored procedure. We receive the OutOfMemoryException during orchestration processing, the Windows Service restarts, uses full 2 GB memory, and crashes again. The server is 32-bit and set to use the /3GB switch. Also I've separated the flow into 3 hosts - one for receive, the other for orchestration, and the third for sends. Anyone have any suggestions for getting this file to process wihout error? • zen of Python vs with statement - philosophical pondering

  I don't intend to simply waste your time, but: has it occurred to you too, while using Python's with statement that it really is contrary to the 5th line of "The Zen of Python" that goes "Flat is better than nested"? Can any enlightened Python guru share me some of their insights on this? (I always find that one more level of indentation pops up in my code every time I use with instead of f.close()... and it's not like I'm not gonna use try: ... finally: ... anyways and thus the benefits of with still elude me, even as I grow to like and understand Python more and more...)

• How to draw a full ellipse in a StreamGeometry in WPF?

  The only method in a StreamGeometryContext that seems related to ellipses is the ArcTo method. Unfortunately it is heavily geared to joining lines rather than drawing ellipses. In particular, the position of the arc is determined by a starting and ending point. For a full ellipse the two coincide obviously, and the exact orientation becomes undefined. So far the best way of drawing an ellipse centered on 100,100 of size 10,10 that I found is like this: using (var ctx = geometry.Open()) { ctx.BeginFigure(new Point(100+5, 100), isFilled: true, isClosed: true); ctx.ArcTo( new Point(100 + 5*Math.Cos(0.01), 100 + 5*Math.Sin(0.01)), // need a small angle but large enough that the ellipse is positioned accurately new Size(10/2, 10/2), // docs say it should be 10,10 but in practice it appears that this should be half the desired width/height... 0, true, SweepDirection.Counterclockwise, true, true); } Which is pretty ugly, and also leaves a small "flat" area (although not visible at normal zoom levels). • WPF UC in Winforms occasionally has an odd border to the left / visually corrupted

  I have a WPF user control I created that is used to show the state of tasks in my UI. I get the odd report back that the control sometimes has a nasty looking border to the left and I cannot reproduce it. The control looks like this (when working) (grey tick=not run, green=OK,red cross=fail,hourglass=running); It looks like this when the problem occurs; It may have something to do with the layering of those icons, when the state changes the others are made invisible and the relevant icon is made visible. The four icons are all stacked on top of each other. It could also be the background in theory, which I'll look at next. Problem is reported on both flat panel and CRT displays. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Update: 1) SnapsToDevicePixels does not affect the issue. 2) Grid is not used, only a canvas.

• Django Per-site caching using memcached

  Hi, So I'm using per-site caching on a project and I've observed the following, which is kind of confusing. When I load a flat page in my browser then change it through admin and then do a refresh (within the cache timeout) there is no change in the page--as expected. However when I stat a new session in a different browser and load the page (still within the timeout) the app is hit instead of the cache, with the Isn't the cache key generated from the URL? it seems that the session state is getting in there somewhere, which is causing a cache miss.   Hey everyone, I have a dillema where our client relations department has been brought in for advice on UI and I vehemently disagree with it...even though I don't consider myself a designer at all. While I have been vocal about my disagreement about it, I've been asked to point to design standards to prove that what I'm saying is correct and that the guys in Client Relations are flat out wrong. A mockup is below, I'm trying to argue that the icons of the airplane, boat, and couch (ya, I didn't choose those either) belong in the header of the page (same area as the logo) and not in the content area of the page. Can anybody please help me by pointing me to something that helps prove my point? Thanks a lot, Greg Andora

• Data import wizard library for .Net?

  Does anyone know of a 3rd party data import wizard that can be embedded into applications? It should import from Excel, Access, SQLServer, csv, tab-separated flat file, XML, Oracle etc. We have a fixed data structure within our application and the user should be able to configure the wizard to match his/her import fields to our own data structure. The wizard should be a library of sorts – preferably a .Net type library. We may want to have it both web-based and desktop based (hence we may need an ASP.Net controls version and a Winforms version). We may also want integration with WPF and Silverlight. If there’s no UI wizard available, does anyone know of a non-UI library that supports easily configurable import from many, many different datasources?

• Developer tool for configuring IIS6

  edit: IIS6; I'm not sure IIS7 is an option in the immediate future... From a developer angle, I am constantly changing my IIS settings, or need to merge settings from other teams into different VMs. The "Save Configuration to Disk" has never really worked well for me. Because we are making lots of small changes, web installation projects have never really worked either... Tools aimed for the web-admin aren't necessarily a good fit for the developer - we have different aims and needs. Does anyone have a script / tool / utility that would allow us to quickly configure IIS? In particular: remove everything (start clean) add a load of virtual directories, each mapped to application base paths set as an application set the app-pool (we'll assume the app pool already exists) set the ASP.NET version to 2.x if needed from some find of flat input list (any format would do).

• OpenCV, Python (ctypes), and OS X 10.5: dylib errors/confusion

  I have tried two brands of ctypes (ctypes-opencv and another) wrappers for OpenCV (2.0 from svn head), can use Python and OpenCV in the Python console, but whenever I try to import the packages (from ctypes_opencv import *) from another Python file, I get the following error message: OSError: dlopen(/usr/local/lib/libcv.dylib, 6): Symbol not found: __ZN2cv10fastMallocEm Referenced from: /usr/local/lib/libcv.dylib Expected in: flat namespace And some more Python errors: module body in __init__.py at line 18 from ctypes_opencv.cxcore import * module body in cxcore.py at line 80 _cxDLL, _cvDLL, _hgDLL = detect_opencv() function detect_opencv in cxcore.py at line 59 cvDLL = cdll.LoadLibrary(find_lib('cv')) function LoadLibrary in __init__.py at line 431 return self._dlltype(name) function __init__ in __init__.py at line 353 self._handle = _dlopen(self._name, mode) I most recently built OpenCV using flags the ctypes_opencv wiki recommended: ENABLE_SSE(2) OFF and BUILD_NEW_PYTHON_SUPPORT OFF. I also tried using the MacPorts install of OpenCV, got the same messages, uninstalled it, and now it errors out as well. :P And if that wasn't enough, I tried using the latest ctypes wrapper, but get boost-jam errors. • large amount of data in many text files - how to process?

  Hi, I have large amounts of data (a few terabytes) and accumulating... They are contained in many tab-delimited flat text files (each about 30MB). Most of the task involves reading the data and aggregating (summing/averaging + additional transformations) over observations/rows based on a series of predicate statements, and then saving the output as text, HDF5, or SQLite files, etc. I normally use R for such tasks but I fear this may be a bit large. Some candidate solutions are to 1) write the whole thing in C (or Fortran) 2) import the files (tables) into a relational database directly and then pull off chunks in R or Python (some of the transformations are not amenable for pure SQL solutions) 3) write the whole thing in Python Would (3) be a bad idea? I know you can wrap C routines in Python but in this case since there isn't anything computationally prohibitive (e.g., optimization routines that require many iterative calculations), I think I/O may be as much of a bottleneck as the computation itself. Do you have any recommendations on further considerations or suggestions? Thanks

• Is Oracle AQ/Streams of any use in my situation?

  I'm writing a workflow system that is driven entirely at each step by explicit human interaction. That is, a task is assigned to a person, that person selects from a few limited options {approve, reject, forward}, and then it is either sent along to the next person or terminated. Just curious of Oracle Streams/AQ has anything to offer over flat tables managed by regular web application code. The amount of processing after each action is fairly limited and the volume is not terribly high, so there's not really a need to throttle things by throwing them into a queue. What are some of the benefits of introducing a queue structure, or is it overkill for my situation?

• Passing a non-iterable to list.extend ()

  Hello, I am creating a public method to allow callers to write values to a device, call it write_vals() for example. Since these values will by typed live, I would like to simplify the user's life by allowing them type in either a list or a single value, depending on how many values they need to write. For example: write_to_device([1,2,3]) or write_to_device(1) My function would like to work with a flat list, so I tried to be clever and code something like this: input_list = [] input_list.extend( input_val ) This works swimmingly when the user inputs a list, but fails miserably when the user inputs a single integer: TypeError: 'int' object is not iterable Using list.append() would create a nested list when a list was passed in, which would be an additional hassle to flatten. Checking the type of the object passed in seems clumsy and non-pythonic and wishing that list.extend() would accept non-iterables has gotten me nowhere. So has trying a variety of other coding methods. Suggestions (coding-related only, please) would be greatly appreciated.

  Hello, I have a full time job, but I also have some ideas in mind -- and I want to outsource some code development and design to Russia. I have friends there who help me to do that -- they'll do the development, provide me invoice (which is just description of our terms, because we decided on flat rate monthly fee), and I need to wire them money. So, I do not have business entity. If I'll pay them, am I am required to pay taxes? Or do I deduct my business expenses (say $30K/year) from my earnings (say $50K/year), and pay taxes only on what's left ($20K to be precise)? Any rules on that? Am I limited with something here? • Changing the colour of Aero glass for my window?

  I'm using DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea in my WPF application to get the glass effect. This is working fine. What I'd like to do is change the colour used for the glass -- I'm writing a countdown timer, and I'd like the window to be the normal glass colour most of the time, and then to go red (but still with glass) when the time runs out. I found this question, which talks about how to apply a gradient glass, and that works fine when picking a different colour. Unfortunately, the borders are not coloured appropriately. When I turn off the borders by using ResizeMode="NoResize", then I end up with square corners. I'd like to keep the rounded corners. I looked at creating an irregularly-shaped window, by using AllowTransparency="True" and that works fine, but doesn't look like an Aero glass window. It looks a bit flat. So: my question: how do I create a window in WPF that looks like Aero glass transparency, but uses a different colour?

I'd like to pass in a parameter or two via the path to the script. Like this; <script src="/scripts/myJavascriptFile.js?config1=true" type="text/javascript"></script> Not really sure if it can work but it would make my solution a little easier for others to take my script and implement (arguable). • How do I create a reusable WF sequential workflow?

  I have two customers that have the same workflow (Create file -transport file - wait for response - send response to internal team); however the implementation of each step is different for each customer. For example, one customer requires a flat file to be sent via SFTP, while the other customer requires an XML file to be sent via FTP. I'd like to create a sequential workflow, using Microsoft Workflow Foundation (WF) and reuse this workflow for multiple vendors. Each action's call to an external module can use the same interface, but a different concrete implementation. However, I'm unfamiliar with WF and I'm not sure how to implement this. Can someone point me to the proper way to use this pattern? Will it make a difference whether I choose WF 3.5 or WF 4.0? Thank you.

• The difference between traditional DLL and COM DLL.

  I am currently studying COM. I found that COM DLL is kind of built upon the traditional DLL infrastructure. When we build COM DLLs, we still rely on the traditional DLL export methods to lead us to the internal COM co-classes. If COM is for component reusing at the binary level, I think the traditional DLL can achieve the same thing. They both expose functions, they are both binary, so what's the point of turning to COM approach? Currently, I have the feeling that the traditional DLL expose methods in a "flat" manner, while the COM DLL expose methods in an "OOP" hierarchy manner. And the OOP manner seems to be a better approach. Could this be the reason why COM prevails? Many thanks.

I can think of a few way to do this but I am not exactly clear on the right way to do it. I see different options. • Rotation towards an object in 3d space

  hello, i have two coordinates on a 2d plane in 3d space, and am trying to rotate one coordinate (a vector) to face the other coordinate. my vertical axis is the y-axis, so if both of the coordinates are located flat on the 2d plane, they would both have a y-axis of 0, and their x and z coordinates determine their position length/width-wise on the plane. right now, i'm calculating the angle like so (language agnostic): angle = atan2(z2-z1,x2-x1); and am rotating/translating in space like so: pushMatrix(); rotateY(angle); popMatrix(); this doesn't seem to be working though. are my calculations/process correct?

• What kind of icon should I deploy with my Android 1.x and 2.x application?

  The thing is this, in Android 1.5 and 1.6 we had the Icon Design Guidelines. In this guide there are specifications for application icons. Every application should conform to this. However, in recent Android versions (2.0 and 2.1) icons have changed from the old to this new flat 2D style. Every icon in Nexus One has this style, so not even Google is conforming to the guideline. To see the differences between high and low density icons see this image and compare Evernote icon with the rest. I've been able to use different icons by using two directories with different icons: drawables-hdpi/icon.png and drawables/icon.png, BUT not every Android 2.x is going to be HDPI and not every 1.x Android device is going to be low pixel density. So the question is: Should I deploy different icons for different Android platform version within my apk file? and if I should, How do I do it?

• Thoughts/Input about Database Design for a CMS

  I'm just about to expand the functionality of our own CMS but was thinking of restructuring the database to make it simpler to add/edit data types and values. Currently, the CMS is quite flat - the CMS requires a field in the database for every type of stored value (manually created). The first option that comes to mind is simply a table which keeps the data types (ie: Address 1, Suburb, Email Address etc) and another table which holds values for each of these data types. Just like how Wordpress keeps values in the 'options' table, PHP serialize would be used to store an array of values. The second option is how Drupal works, the CMS creates tables for every data type. Unlike Wordpress, this can be a bit of an overkill but really useful for SQL queries when ordering and grouping by a particular value. What's everyone's thoughts?

• Python unicode issues (2.6)

  I'm currently working on a irc bot for a multi-lingual channel, and I'm encountering some issues with unicode which are proving nearly impossible to solve. No matter what configuration of unicode encoding I seem to try, the list function which the below code sits within just flat out does nothing (c.notice is a class function which sends a NOTICE command to the irc server) or when it does do something, spits out something which obviously isn't encoded. The command should be sending ??, but instead it seems hellbent on sending å¤©å­ with a previous configuration of the same commands. The one I have specified below is of the 'send nothing' variety. I haven't worked with unicode before this, and thus I am quite stuck. I'm also positive that I'm doing this completely wrong as a consequence.
