• jQuery.param() - doesn't serialize javascript Date objects?

  jQuery.param({foo: 1}); // => "foo=1" - SUCCESS! jQuery.param({bar: new Date()}); // => "" - OUCH! There is no problem with encodeURIComponent(new Date()), which is what I would have thought param is calling for each member. Also, explicitly using "traditional" param (e.g. jQuery.param(xxx, true)) DOES serialize the date, but alas, that isn't of much help since my data structure isn't flat. Is this because typeof(Date) == "object" and param tries to descend into it to find scalar values? How might one realistically serialize an object that happens to have Date's in it for $.post() etc.?

• Get only new RSS entries with PHP Script ?

  What im trying to do: Fetch X numbers of RSS Feeds from my Blogs and echo only new entries. My Problem is, how to know wich items are already parsed? Solution so far: Fetch the Feed every 5 hours, store all titles inside an Database table or flat file. Next run check if the title is already in database if not print it and save it inside the database. But iam not sure if this is best practise to do this? If someone knows a fast way, it would be great. Sorry for my poor english.

• Compass accuracy dilemma

  I need to build compass for my application. From reading the documentation it seems there are two reasonable ways of doing this: Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION method: This is the easy way of doing it. The problem with this is it is not accurate. When I compare my reading with Snaptic Compass it is about 10-15 degress off which for my purposes is unacceptable. Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER, Sensor.TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD and getRotationMatrix() in conjunction with remapCoordinateSystem() and getOrientation() method: The documentation says this "is usually more accurate". The problem is regardless of the delay I register with listener the compass goes crazy even when the device is stationary on flat surface. Any suggestions for solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.

• Best way to bind node collection to itemscontrol in Silverilght

  I have a Silverlight project where the main objects are just a bunch of nodes that are joined to each other. A parent node can have many children. I want to be able to bind the nodes to an itemscontrol or similar and so was wondering how to best structure the parent child relationship. Is it OK to create a flat top level list of all nodes (List allNodes) and add each node to that, binding the list to the itemscontrol, then on top of that add each node to it's parent's 'childnodes' list to establish the structure - or am I doing some kind of ugly doubling up? Just hoping there is some kind of best practice or pattern I can latch on to Thanks

• Android WebView not respecting scaling percentage on physical devices...

  I have a WebView which I'm trying to have scale to a certain percent on loading the page. The iPhone version of this software uses the HTML meta-tag: <meta name="viewport" content="width=320, initial-scale=0.95, maximum-scale=2.0, user-scalable=1"> Since Android's WebView doesn't seem to respect that tag I hard-coded the percent using setInitialScale(). However, the WebView is just flat-out ignoring this method call. No matter what number I put in there it shows at 100%. Ideas? Update: It's working fine in the emulator, it's only failing on my Droid (Motorola) and my G1 (HTC).

• Easy framework for OpenGL Shaders in C/C++

  I just wanted to try out some shaders on a flat image. Turns out that writing a C program, which just takes a picture as a texture and applies, let's say a gaussian blur, as a fragment shader on it is not that easy: You have to initialize OpenGL which are like 100 lines of code, then understanding the GLBuffers, etc.. Also to communicate with the windowing system one has to use GLUT which is another framework.. Turns out that Nvidia's Fx composer is nice to play with shaders.. But I still would like to have a simple C or C++ program which just applies a given fragment shader to an image and displays the result. Does anybody have an example or is there a framework?

• Select distinct users with referrals

  I have a bunch of Users. Since Django doesn't really let me extend the default User model, they each have Profiles. The Profiles have a referred_by field (a FK to User). I'm trying to get a list of Users with = 1 referral. Here's what I've got so far Profile.objects.filter(referred_by__isnull=False).values_list('referred_by', flat=True) Which gives me a list of IDs of the users who have referrals... but I need it to be distinct, and I want the User object, not their ID. Or better yet, it would be nice if it could return the number of referrals a user has. Any ideas?

  Hi, I have a bunch of items – for simplicity reasons – a flat table with unique names seeded via bulk insert: create table #items ( ItemName NVARCHAR(255) ) The database has this structure: create table Statements ( Id INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Version INT not null, FurtherDetails varchar(max) null, ProposalDateTime DATETIME null, UpdateDateTime DATETIME null, ProposerFk INT null, UpdaterFk INT null, primary key (Id) ) create table Item ( StatementFk INT not null, ItemName NVARCHAR(255) null, primary key (StatementFk) ) Here Item is a child of Statement (inheritance). I would like to insert items in #items using a set based approach (avoiding triggers and loops). Can this be achieved with OUTPUT in my scenario. A ‘loop based’ approach is just too slow where I use something like this: insert into Statements (Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk) VALUES (1, null, getdate(), getdate(), @user_id, @user_id) etc. This is a start for the OUTPUT based approach – but I am not sure whether this would work in my case as ItemName is only inserted into Item: insert into Statements ( Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk ) output inserted.Id ... ???   I am using BizTalk 2009 and I have a flat file that is similar to the following "0162892172","TIM ","LastName ","760 "," ","COMANCHE ","LN " "0143248282","GEORGE ","LastName ","625 "," ","ENID ","AVE " When I parse it and start mapping it I need to get rid of the quotation marks. I have marked the Wrap Character attribute for the schema as a quotation mark but it doesn't remove it when BizTalk is parsing the file. Is there an easy way to specify the removal of a wrap character or am I going to have to run it through a script functiod every time? Also I would like to be able to remove the trailing spaces as well, if at all possible.

• Best data store for billions of rows

  I need to be able to store small bits of data (approximately 50-75 bytes) for billions of records (~3 billion/month for a year). The only requirement is fast inserts and fast lookups for all records with the same GUID and the ability to access the data store from .net. I'm a SQL server guy and I think SQL Server can do this, but with all the talk about BigTable, CouchDB, and other nosql solutions, it's sounding more and more like an alternative to a traditional RDBS may be best due to optimizations for distributed queries and scaling. I tried cassandra and the .net libraries don't currently compile or are all subject to change (along with cassandra itself). I've looked into many nosql data stores available, but can't find one that meets my needs as a robust production-ready platform. If you had to store 36 billion small, flat records so that they're accessible from .net, what would choose and why?

  I've got a game in VB6 and it works great and all, but I have been toying with the idea of creating a scripting engine. Ii'm thinking I'd like VB6 to read in flat text script files for me and then lex/parse/execute them. I have good programming experience, and I've built a simple C compiler, as well as a LOGO emulator before. My question is: Are there any tools that I can use, like Lexx/Yakk/Bison to help me? How should I approach this problem in regards to lexing, parsing, and feeding the commands back to VB6 so I can handle them? Is this idea a BAD IDEA in the sense that there are too many obstacles in the way (For example, building minesweeper in assembly, though not impossible, is very difficult, and a bad idea.)?

• How can I use the Spark library in my ActionScript project?

  I'm using Flare to develop a visualization. Being familiar to Java, Javascript and Eclipse it wasn't a big deal to familiarize myself to developing with Actionscript and Adobe FlashBuilder. I actually found that the learning curve is very flat. However, being new to Actionscript, I can't figure out how to use the Spark libraries that are part of Flex. I tried to add the libraries to the build path, with no success. I guess I'm confused about how Flash, Flex, Actionscript, Spark and Flare work together, even after reading the helpful answers on this question Does anybody know which part of the puzzle I'm missing? There are about 50 fields in the form that should be considered 'digit' fields where they shouldn't be anything less than 0. What should I change with this Javascript to ensure that all 'digit' like fields have this alert box pop up? I cannot use jquery/mootools for validation - it has to be flat Javascript. Thanks.

• Edit PDF online and save and form data to server

  Hello, I have some PDF documents which are being displayed in the browser, with some fields already being pre-populated from the database using iTextSharp (we are running Windows Server 2008, IIS 7, SQL Server 2008, and ASP.NET 2.0/2.5 with C#). Our clients need to be able to fill in the remaining fields and save the PDF to the server. I have considered the following possibilities: 1.) Somehow using iTextSharp to parse the form fields, grab all the form data and save it to the database on submit. 2.) Adding a submit button to the PDF itself using LiveCycle with some sort of JS click event to save the FDF/XFDF/XDP/XML data either to the database or to a flat file on the server. I am currently unsure as to what the best approach would be, what would work, or how to implement any of these possible solutions, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm looking to achieve the following: For a specific person, for example BarackObama, I'd like to get the last 100 times/tweets he was mentioned. Not his own tweets but the tweets of others containing @BarackObama. In the end I'd like to have: the person who mentioned, location, datetime. This content should be written to a flat file. I've been experimenting with the Twitter API and Python, with success but haven't yet succeeded achieving the above problem. I know there is a dev sections on the twitter website but they don't provide any example of code!! https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/get/statuses/mentions count=100 .... For me the scripting language or way of doing is not relevant it's the result. I just read on the internet that python and Twitter api are a good match. Thanks a lot in advance!!

• How to get X,Y,Z rotations of vertices on a sphere at the origin?

  Hey, I have a sphere in my game world and i would like to place a plane at each vertex on this sphere for debugging purposes. The planes should be orientated so that they lie flat against the sphere (perpendicular to the normals). The sphere is located at the origin, so all the vertices are relative to that. If my thinking is correct, i should be able to do this using the positions of the vertices and some simple trigonometry. I have tried a few combinations but have had no joy yet. I would greatly appreciate some help on this. Thanks. • Python: Taking an array and break it into subarrays based on some criteria

  I have an array of files. I'd like to be able to break that array down into one array with multiple subarrays, each subarray contains files that were created on the same day. So right now if the array contains files from March 1 - March 31, I'd like to have an array with 31 subarrays (assuming there is at least 1 file for each day). In the long run, I'm trying to find the file from each day with the latest creation/modification time. If there is a way to bundle that into the iterations that are required above to save some CPU cycles, that would be even more ideal. Then I'd have one flat array with 31 files, one for each day, for the latest file created on each individual day.

• Scalable (half-million files) version control system

  We use SVN for our source-code revision control and are experimenting using it for non-source-code files. We are working with a large set (300-500k) of short (1-4kB) text files that will be updated on a regular basis and need to version control it. We tried using SVN in flat-file mode and it is struggling to handle the first commit (500k files checked in) taking about 36 hours. On a daily basis, we need the system to be able to handle 10k modified files per commit transaction in a short time (<5 min). My questions: Is SVN the right solution for my purpose. The initial speed seems too slow for practical use. If Yes, is there a particular svn server implementation that is fast? (We are currently using the gnu/linux default svn server and command line client.) If No, what are the best f/oss/commercial alternatives Thanks

  We're all familiar with basic ORM with relational databases: an object corresponds to a row and an attribute in that object to a column (or some slight variation), though many ORMs add a lot of bells and whistles. I'm wondering what other alternatives there are (besides raw access to the database or whatever you're working with). Alternatives that just work with relational databases would be great, but ones that could encapsulate multiple types of backends besides just SQL (such as flat files, RSS, NoSQL, etc.) would be even better. I'm more interested in ideas rather than specific implantations and what languages/platforms they work with, but please link to anything you think is interesting.

  I've read that one of the key beliefs of Python is that flat nested. However, if I have several variables counting up, what is the alternative to multiple for loops? My code is for counting grid sums and goes as follows: def horizontal(): for x in range(20): for y in range(17): temp = grid[x][y: y + 4] sum = 1 for n in temp: sum += int(n) return sum This seems to me like it is too heavily nested. Firstly, what is considered to many nested loops in Python ( I have certainly seen 2 nested loops before). Secondly, if this is too heavily nested, what is an alternative way to write this code?

  I've retrieved some data from the database, which is in the following structure: [0] [item_id] = 197 [dice_chat_css] = "foo" [dice_image] = "bar.png" [1] [item_id] = 128 [dice_chat_css] = "foo" [dice_image] = "bar.png" The most convenient and computationally inexpensive way for me to pass this data to the rest of my (PHP) application is with item_id as the index, because it saves having to loop over the array to look up values. If this was a flat array, I could accomplish this trivially with array_flip, but since it isn't, it's my pick of using either the multidimensional array_flip listed in the comments on PHP.net, or roll my own logic: for ($i = 0; $i < sizeOf($r); $i++){ $s[$r[$i]['item_id']]['dice_image'] = $r[$i]['dice_image']; $s[$r[$i]['item_id']]['dice_chat_css'] = $r[$i]['dice_chat_css']; } I know it's simple, but it feels like I'm reinventing the wheel here. Is there an accepted, more optimized method available or am I being weird about this?

Question: I have a legacy system with users and files, the info of all files pertaining to a user are stored on a flat file. I want to upgrade this system by storing all info on a db, design tables, and create a C# system that will populate the new db as well as ftp the files to a new path.
