• Batch change modified/created dates?

  I recently bought new hard drives for my NAS. This means that I'm copying all the data off the NAS, upgrading it, and then moving the data back. I've gotten as far as copying the data from the NAS, but every file's modified/created date has been changed to when it was copied (today). Is there a way, keeping in mind that I have the original data, to batch update the modified/created dates on the copied files without having to copy them over again (we're talking over a terabyte of data)?

• Share PC over network

  I have a server installed on one local Win7 machine (say as 192.168.2.14:8080/myAPP) and I want to access that server from different computer (say ip as 192.168.2.16). Even they are connected to same network I can't access server from other computer. I guess the problem is in firewall. This is working when I disable firewall and not working when I allow certain ports in windows firewall but keeping firewall on (As a rule to allow incoming connections).

• How to declutter and organize the cables on and under my desk? [closed]

  Computer cables and external devices are a continuous source of frustration for everybody who likes a clean working environment. The more devices you add to your home office, the more disastrous the situation under the table becomes: cords falling behind the desk, ugly cables running along the sides and under of the desk, making it almost impossible to clean and remove the dust. This is not my office, but I've seen similar "setups:" I'm looking for good tips/products which help me in keeping the all cables somehow under control and organized.

• Recommendations for remote server management software, similar to Puppet or Canonical Landscape?

  We currently have five Ubuntu 10.04 LTS servers, and keeping them all up-to-date is starting to be a pain. I've been looking into solutions like Puppet and Canonical Landscape. Out of the two I prefer Puppet -- it would be useful to be able to ensure the permissions of various directories on the machines, and define groups and users on the server which are then propagated to clients. Is there any other software in this vein that I should be taking a look at?

• Can Amazon VMs be used as Active Directory domain controllers?

  I've got a client who wants to move his companies servers off site. As he is only a 10 person company I'm looking for some pretty in-expensive options. One option is the smallest of the Amazon cloud machines. The question becomes can I make one of these machines a domain controller? Cost wise the Amazon machine is cheaper than the power costs of keeping a server (or a PC) up and running in his home office 24x7 thanks to the high cost of power in Southern California.

• what's the PC version of "wget -r" to get files off an ftp site in the command line?

  someone showed me a really quick way to get folders off an ftp site via the shell on a Mac using the command "wget -r ftp://" (then the address of the ftp site folder location) and it would download to whatever folder i was in, keeping all the sub directories the same as the ftp site seemed really quick and easy, but how do i do a similar thing on a PC?

• Is it possible to have non-replicated data on an LDAP consumer?

I see several use cases for this scenario like an enterprise application syncing all users from the main LDAP of the Org but keeping it's own application related schemas and objects in its server. • Free web gallery installation that can use existing directory hierarchy in filesystem?

  There are several different free software gallery projects (Gallery, Coppermine, etc), but as far as I know each of those creates a copy of imported images in their internal storage, be it directory structure or database). Is there any gallery software that would allow keeping existing directory hierarchy of media files (images, videos), as-is, and just store the meta-data of them in a database? I guess at least various NAS solutions ship with software like this.

• How would I prevent users from logging in a PC while software is installing?

  So I currently am looking for a solution to keeping users logged out while software is installing or activating a pop-up message that cannot be moved, closed, and is always on top, because sometimes when we deploy software to users (via SCCM), the parameters of the install require the user to be logged out for the duration of the installation. I've looked at trying to customize the group policy for account lockout but with no luck. Anyone know of any programs or scripts that do this? Thank you!

  I'm a CS uni student in a country with limited bandwidth, and I find that I download files (particularly install files) for reuse\reinstallation\giving to my friends.. I've kept these files in different folders, and now find it extremely hard to find them, and keeping track of obselete files (the almost weekly releases of iTunes versions, or latest 7zip release or the .Net framework installers). What I would like to find is a file manager that could support tags, so instead of hierachical folders, i could find\view files according to their tags...

• window 7 hardware reserved ram

  Hi, I have Windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram and 1152mb is hardware reserved which leaves me with 7039mb of physical memory available as I can see on the task manager. What is the advantage or disadvantage of keeping it this way? If I disable it from the MSCONFIG, the hardware reserved comes down to 1mb. Well, which way I should keep it for best performance in all meanings considering that nowdays, 8gb is still a lot. Could someone explain the easy way please?

I intend to use Puppet for configuration management either way (the declarative approach seems far better than running scripts), am running a somewhat nonstandard stack (e.g. MongoDB), and am uncertain about how much value RightScale would add relative to Puppet + Amazon's auto-scaling + another hosted monitoring system. Those who use RightScale, what features do you find important? Is its auto-scaling support (including keeping single instances running) more powerful than Amazon's?

I need to separate them out but the issue is the first column is words that sometimes are one word and sometimes two.   Amit Agarwal of Labnol reported couple of days ago that Gizmodo would have made $150,000 from the iPhone 4G scoop that revealed  all the secrets about iPhone 4G. But the reality seems to be entirely different. Gawker Media owner Nick Denton says that "There were no immediate revenue benefits whatsoever — in fact, only costs,"(via businessinsider) Gizmodo paid $5,000 to get hold of iPhone 4G which was lost by an Apple Engineer at a bar after his birthday party. Plus an additional amount of $7000 is spent on keeping the servers up to server 23 page views attracted by the iPhone 4G blog posts. Irrespective of whether Gizmodo made profits or not, they got huge publicity. But at the same time Apple should be very angry with Gizmodo for derailing it’s planned unveiling of the product.   I have a MAC Mini G4. I would like to install Ubuntu on it. I have looked at this Q&A Mac G4 with no OS: can Ubuntu be used?, and I have a question. Is it worth the hassle to install Ubuntu, or should I keep MAC OS. The unit has MAC OS 10.4 (Tiger).   Just wanted to know if both of these are fully compatible with Ubuntu?
