• Windows Task Scheduler broken: "service is not available"

  Problem I'm trying to run Windows Task Scheduler from the start menu (the command is %SystemRoot%\system32\taskschd.msc /s) but as of very recently, I'm getting an error: ![Task Scheduler service is not available. Verify that the service is running.][1] I made some screenshots but I can't embed them unfortunately because I don't have enough reputation points yet: http://i.imgur.com/7rPXf.png and Mmddy.png and wonnF.png The window then opens as usual except no tasks are displayed and the error "Reading Data Failed" is shown on a few of the panels. ![second screenshot][2] Possible Causes ran rpccfg -a 1 and netsh rpc add 127.0.0.1 changed PC name twice while computer was still loading installed and used DeltaCopy installed Adobe AIR installed Warsow I can't think of any other system changes I've made. Things Tried ran rpccfg with the parameter to reset to defaults ran netsh with the parameter to reset to defaults uninstalled DeltaCopy forced the service to restart. The service and its dependencies appear started and looked normal before and after connecting to "another computer" from inside the program and entering credentials for the current machine. This said access denied yesterday but today it says "Connecting as another user is only supported when connecting to a computer running Windows Vista™ or later." and partially works but doesn't show my tasks. ![third screenshot][3] but I am on Vista! Please help!

• Webmin / Virtualmin running php as www-data, is locked out of viewing .htaccess and writing

  I've asked this on the virtualmin forums, but haven't had any help from there. Recently, "something" happened and it seems that the apache service has gone a bit weird. What it does: it runs all apache traffic as www-data and sometimes spawns the php5-cgi process as www-data, this is a problem because all the domain users own their directories and default permissions don't let www-data write to these folders (file uploads are dead) or read .htaccess (permalinks are broken in wordpress). I've googled this for about a week straight now, tried pretty much everything I could find and achieved nothing. The only thing that I think might actually be the cause of all this is this page: http:// - i.imgur.com/NYW3x.png (got shut down by the spam filter) So I figured if I set it to "default", this might magically start working again, but all it does is "crash" apache (all websites timeout). I figure it's something to do with the "mpm" module or something, but I can't find anything relevant in the settings to modify for it to work. Can someone please point me in the right direction? • Tools to (privately) annotate/markup a website for maintenance

  I've been tasked with updating a website. Rather than proofreading and updating each page (one at a time), I want to make a single pass over the entire website, marking graphics/images/videos that need to be rewritten, removed, or updated. I thought about taking screenshots, marking those up, and putting them in our bug-tracking database, but that seems like an extremely tedious solution. Some of the content is similar on various pages across the website, and the entire site itself is localized into several languages (so any changes made to the English version will have corresponding changes for other languages). I also want all of my markup to remain private (that is, if it's stored online somewhere, I should be the only person who can see my comments). I found an article that lists several website annotation services, but it's not clear whether they allow private annotations, or whether these tools are even appropriate for website maintenance (many of them look more geared toward social networking). I've started making a list of some necessary and desired features below, and may add more as necessary. Annotations/markup/comments remain private (only visible to me) Comment history/tagging (so I can reuse the same comment for shared footers, items requiring similar updates, etc.) Ability to print/export a list or report of all comments for the entire website Ability to produce a categorized list of changes (e.g., to produce a list of images that need updating, which I can send to the graphic designer) What processes and tools do you use to keep track of all the changes that need to be made to a website? What features are painfully absent from the tools you use?

• Why do AWS spot-instance prices spike above the "on demand" pricing?

  Amazon Pricing on Spot Instance Inconsistencies This is something which will be best explained through screenshots of a historical chart of instance pricings. If you look at a lot of the instance prices for spot instances, you will notice regular patterns of spikes. See here: As you can see, the price for this compute medium instance, regularly spikes above the on demand price. A c1.medium instance (on demand), would only cost $0.186 per hour. But for a period of a few weeks, in zone B, the price would regularly spike to $1.20. This is some 6 times the actual on demand price. It's also not isolated. If you look at zone-b again for small instances, there is a similar, spike frequently. Which goes 4x the on demand pricing. Does anyone know why this happens? Here are a few suggestions Someone entered $1.2 instead of $0.12 (I would discount this since it happened 20 times over the space of 3 weeks). Amazon regularly artifically inflate their prices by bidding on their own instances to get the most bang for their buck. (I would discount this since it would be ridiculous and bad business) Some company launched 1000 servers at once, and wants to make sure that they all launch. (I would discount this since they would presumably launch them at a price which would be below the minimum on demand price. Why would you pay above on demand for a single server?). It's a bug in their reporting?

• Window Management for Mac OS X

  Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

• Keynote presentation in conjunction with other app?

  The short version: I'd like to tell Apple Keynote to switch to a specific app (never leaving full-screen mode) before a certain slide appears, then display that slide as soon as I switch back. Some more details: I'm going to show off five major improvements in an upcoming release of our app. I want one slide highlighting the feature, then one or two showing some details, perhaps with screenshots. After that, so people get a better impression of what I'm talking about, I'll show it off live — to do this, I have to switch to a VM or remote session (since this is a Windows app). Then, I'd like to switch back and go to the next feature. I.e., it would be similar to Apple's "Demo" slides in a cursive font, except not with a different screen, or different computer. It's this switching back and forth that I want to make smooth, just to wow the audience a little. Can I perhaps do a "special" slide in Keynote that tells it to run an AppleScript? Better yet, to switch to an app, and wait until I switch back, and then automatically advance to the next slide?

  I am updating a user manual that was initially written by somebody else. I know that most manuals are not written in Word, but our office only uses Microsoft Office applications. I am doing fairly well, creating and applying "styles". A lot of the directions in this manual require updated screenshots of the program it documents. … It's a big mess. </rant> One thing I am attempting to do is add “call outs” or Note text boxes like those seen in modern software manuals. I am attempting to do this with the Text box feature. However, I am having a hard time making them uniform in size and positioning. Does Word offer a way to manage the size and other properties of textboxes, similar to the way it allows you to manage text in styles? I feel that this could (or should) be possible. Is it possible to manage Text Boxes the same way you can manage styles?

• Configuring vlans on Cisco SG200 series switch with Ubuntu server

  I created a vlan on Ubuntu with vconfig tool with 21 as id and eth1 as the host port. I connected eth1 to one of the ports on the swtich (GE23) as all ports trunk by default. In the webgui I created a vlan named test with the id 21 and I made GE2 are port as an access port. In port to vlan mapping I selected vlan 21 and added it port GE2 by selecting untagged option. I have assigned 192.168.1.1/24 as the ip of eth1.21 on Ubuntu. If I connect another cleint pc to GE2 port with a ip of 192.168.1.2/24 I cannot ping the server ip (192.168.1.1/24). Ping from server to client also does not work. I inspected packets that are sent out eth1 on the server and I could see the vlan 21 tag. And I connect the other end of the cable to a different Linux pc and inspected the packets but no vlan tags can be seen. What could be preventing me from getting vlans working? Edit 1 screenshots:

• Windows 3 Animated Background/Desktop/Wallpaper

  In the summer of 1995, I visited some family in Los Angeles. My uncle had a computer with Windows 3 (or some version thereof since Windows 95 had not been released yet). In Windows 3, there was no desktop or wallpaper like in later versions; instead you could set it to a simple pattern (still possible in later versions before XP) like hounds-tooth or bricks (interestingly, there seems to be next to nothing available on the Internet about this anymore; no screenshots and almost no pages). I recall being amused when I found a program (on the still young “world-wide web”) that would actually let you set an animated background. It was smooth and fluid and was quite an amazing thing at the time. If I recall correctly, it had several built-in animations including one of a light-orange-pink background over which storks flew towards the top-left, possibly with some light stuff floating in the “background” (they were actually animated and flapped their wings, not simply translated coordinates). The storks were somewhat simplified, black-line drawings. Over the years, I’ve tried finding it again a few times but never could. Worse, it’s become harder and harder over time as new programs came out and polluted the search results. I’m hoping that someone remembers this software and knows some useful information like the author or where to download it. (No, it’s not ScreenPaper. That was created in 1997 to let you set a screensaver as the Windows 95/NT4 background. This was at least two years earlier for Windows 3 and I’m almost certain it had these animations built-in—I don’t recall any stork screensavers for Windows 3.)

• Server Bash Line Wrapping Over Text & In Wrong Place

  This is quite a hard problem to explain, when connecting to one of my servers using the bash shell, under any user the line wrapping is broken and has all sorts of problems. Once of which I detail in screenshots below: Other problems I experience include nano getting very confused about which line and or letter I am on, as shown by typing the same message into nano: These problems only occur when connecting as I previously mentioned to one of my servers which runs CentOs. Do you know why this is occurring and what I can do to fix it? On other servers the message works fine! Google says line wrapping errors can occur if you don't conform to these rules use the \[ escape to begin a sequence of non-printing characters, and the \] escape to signal the end of such a sequence I am not sure where this would fit in on my prompt?

• How can I run Gnome or KDE locally in Cygwin?

  Apparently it is possible to do this using cygwin ports, as can be seen in screenshots. I followed this how-to to get apt-cygports set up, and I used it to install gnome-session. This how-to supposedly gives the commands needed to run Gnome or KDE, but whenever I try to run Gnome, a blank X-window pops up and then quickly disappears. • Virus / Malware: Explorer window with strange user logged into Hotmail

  I was looking into a PC, the user of which had complained that he couldn't connect to the internet and that the PC was experiencing random restarts. The PC runs WinXP SP3. On examination, I found that the Wireless Zero Configuration service was stopped. I enabled that and the internet was back on(The pc connected through wifi). Then I started firefox and browsed to gmail.com. I did not launch any other program, except for a few explorer windows. It was then I noticed a window had popped up(it was not a pop up). It had the explorer folder icon and instead of explorer folder contents, it showed a hotmail page, with a user named "Homer Stinson" logged in. The titlebar was empty and there were no toolbars. I asked the client whether this was his email id, which he said it was not. I opened task manager, which did not show this explorer window in it's Application tab. I switched back to the 'rogue' window and found that the hotmail settings page was now open, which later changed to the hotmail edit profile page for the same user. I was not clicking anything. Then suddenly the window closed. I checked the autorun locations, fired up a Malwarebytes Anti Malware scan which gave a clean result. The system also had an updated installation of AVG. I don't want a solution for this virus(?) problem. I asked this here because I wanted to know if somebody has come across something similar. What kind of malware can this be? The user had not seen a similar window before and I should have taken screenshots. (PS:Homer Stinson is an imaginary name. I searched for the other real name with some relevant keywords but could not come up with a virus/malware discussion post.) UPDATE: When I checked the PC later a DEP error had popped up closing which restarted the PC.

  I'm trying to create differencing image based on differencing image in VirtualBox 4.2.18. Official documentation says it should be possible: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch05.html#diffimages Basically I want to achieve this drive hierarchy: + immutable image with Debian and all software installed +---- differencing image with specific configuration, autoreset=off, readonly +-------- differencing image with autoreset=on +---- another differencing image for different virtual machine +-------- differencing image with autoreset=on I successfully created differencing image based on differencing image, but I'm not able to connect it to virtual machine :( It always shows error: Failed to open the hard disk .... cannot register hard disk ... because hard disk with UUID ... already exists Here is screenshot of Virtual Media Manager and error dialog Virtual Media Manager Window screenshot Very strange is that the new differencing image (tempdrive.vdi) doesn't have Actual Size 0. I wasn't able to connect it, but still, it has 36KB of data on it... This is very similar to this older question: How to create a chained differencing disk of another differencing disk in Virtual Box? but suggested solution is not working anymore in VirtualBox 4.2.18, so I posted it as a new question. (Limit for posting links and screenshots is quite annoying..)

• IIS FTP 7.5 Data Channel Problem (SSL)

  Hey there I wonder if anyone can get me in the right direction. I am setting up both a FTPS Client and Server, FTPS Server using Microsoft’s iis FTP 7.5. On the client side it will be running on Linux and I am using M2crypto for the openssl wrapping (python). I am worried the problem is on the server side (iis7.5) due to the following discovery : If I host using Filezilla with BOTH the control and data channel being forced to be encrypted it works 100% (100% file transmission), if i use iis as the server everything works up to the point when the data channel takes over... i.e. all data of the retrieved file is already received correctly in my basket! The ftp server just won't send the final '226 Transfer complete.' on the cmd socket. Why? If i force the client or server to close the connection the file is 100% intact....If i use iis 7.5 with forced encryption on control channel all works 100% as long as i don’t force data channel... If we terminate the client, the uploaded file on the server suddenly jumps up to full size.

• Why Virtual Box won't give me option to create 64 bits guests?

  My host is x64 bits Windows 8.1. I downloaded the latest Virtual Box (4.3) and I'm trying to create a VM with a 64 bits Ubuntu OS (ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64). When I go to New VM wizard, it doesn't give me option to select "Ubuntu (x64)" as I have seen in other people's screenshots, only just "Ubuntu". As a result, the ISO can't boot. I tried in another PC and Virtual Box gives the x64 variants to most listed OS... Control Panel shows x64 OS, x64 processor. My host laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCZ22UGX/N, Intel® Core™ i7-2640M processor. CPUz shows Vx-t is available on my processor, of course. Here is what I tried so far: I enabled IO APIC as required in the docs. I have virtualization enabled in the BIOS. It works fine in VMware. Check that Hyper-V is not running or even installed on my Windows. Same for VMware. I also tried running the command: VBoxManage modifyvm [vmname] --longmode on for that VM, but no change.. I think the issue is really that I can't select x64 variant of the Ubuntu OS for that VM. Other people seem to indicate that's a requirement, but I don't get that option for some reason. I spent a lot of time and can't find what's wrong... Anyone knows what could be missing here? Thank you very much!! Eduardo

  Similar to this post, I'd like to change my proxy settings using a script. However, it fails. When I am behind the proxy, IE does not connect to the internet. • Eee PC Seashell series netbook screen is cut off at bottom no matter the resolution

  I have an Eee PC 1015PE Seashell netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (8.14.10.2230) with a "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" detected. I tried: Changing the resolution (Control Panel = Appearance and Personalization = Display = Screen Resolution) to 1024x768 Updating the video driver (to 8.14.10.2230) Uninstalling the driver and rebooting Pressing the Windows Key + "-" (magnifier) Pressing Ctrl + Mouse Scroll only resizes the desktop items Pressing Fn + F4 shows 1024x600 (which I think is what I should be using, but nothing happens) EDIT: Changed from Landscape to Portrait and it works Attached an External Monitor and when I extend or set as desktop it works only on the External Monitor (shows up as "Generic PnP Monitor in Device Manager) Basically the bottom inch of my desktop is off-screen hiding my start bar, but my wigets are in their proper position (the start bar is not hidden). Pressing Ctrl + Esc shows the start menu but its cut-off. I'm pretty sure I should be using 1024x600 resolution, any advice? What's odd is that this only started happening recently. • How come my Intel 520 180GB SSD performs extremely poorly?

  I recently installed a new Intel 520 series 180GB SSD in my brand new MacBook Pro. The system is as follows: Model: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 Main Drive Bay: Intel 520-series 180GB SATA-3 (6GB/s negotiated link) SSD (Firmware: 400i) [80GB free] Optical Bay: Toshiba 5400 RPM 750GB SATA-2 HDD Trim: Enabled (according to Trim Enabler App) And here are the speeds I'm getting: Read: 412 MB/s Write: 186 MB/s What have I done wrong? Results expected: Read/write both 500MB/s I have seen benchmarks with lesser SSD:s (SATA-2 even) outperform my write-speeds by far. Also, Intel 520 SSD:s are supposed to be the top class of SSD:s. Trim Enabler report: This looks a bit odd compared to screenshots from their site: These is the defined S.M.A.R.T attributes (taken from Intel): And here are my S.M.A.R.T attributes read using smartctl tool from smartmontools: They don't seem very compatible. I'm going to try and look for a S.M.A.R.T attributes reader tool for OS X which might support Intel 520 series.

• If I partition a drive connected via eSata will it show different partitions when connected via USB?

  I have an odd problem with an external drive. I'm formatting it connected to my laptop prior to connecting it to my router. The HDD enclosure has both an eSata and USB connections. Generally, I connect it via eSata to my laptop. I created my partitions and connected it to the router, but I see partition information that is different than what I created. After chasing leads concerning large HDD size, I mindlessly connected the HDD to my laptop with USB. Lo! I see the same partitions as the router. Attached are screenshots using the same program and the HDD in question. The only difference is the connection. For the first, I connected via eSata and hit "refresh" on the partition program. Then, turned off the HDD, disconnected the eSata cable, and connected via USB. Power and refresh. eSata: reports a total HDD size of 2328 GB, with four partitions (the third being 1.96TB) USB: reports a total HDD size of 280 GB, with three partitions (the third being 279 GB) Any idea why this is happening? It looks like it clearly is an issue of the 4K sector size and not playing nice with the USB enclosure. I tried it eSata and USB in Windows and Linux and it appears consistently that eSata is reporting correctly, USB incorrectly.

• Windows is very slow with my new SSD

  I have a laptop HP probook 4520s with Core i5 M480 @ 2.67Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 640 GB HDD Radeon HD 6370m 1GB video card. It would seem like a good stack for work, right? But My HDD has crashed after everyday walking with laptop about 1 year. After buying my new SSD (Patriot memory - Torqx II 128 Gb SATA II) and installing new Windows 8 from scratch - it was amazing fast. But I had only install windows updates, and I feel that the speed become the same as my old HDD, after install other software for my work, it becomes so slow, so when I use my PC with old lower configuration and it really works better than my awesome laptop... I checked that TRIM and AHCI mode are turned on. So why's that? I asked for help in Patriot Memory support, they suggested to send them ATTO test results, done, sent. Here is the response: "Thank you very much for the attached results. Looking at the results, I can see that your SSD speed is a lot lower than it should be. Can you tell me your system specs?" Until they checked my email, I re-installed Windows 8 to Windows 7 and it was again perfect, but the story repeats it becomes slower and slower after every installing new software. Check out some screenshots.. (sorry for the screenshot with russian TaskManager, I hope you will recognize those parameters accordingly with your english or other lang TaskManager) So the main issue that something everytime loads the disc on 100% and the response time is jumping around 1000-3000 ms. Why am I asking about Windows? Because I tried to install Linux Mint (x86) and It just flies. So great performance independent on how many programs I have installed. Only Windows (any 7 or 8) has this problem. So guys, I appreciate any ideas about how to fix that and may be answers of main question - "why is it so.?" Thanks!

• VLAN Through Switch Doesn't Work

  I have the following scenario: I have a Cisco Aironet 1040 access point. I have it configured with two SSIDs, each going to a different VLAN. So: SSID internal : VLAN 90 SSID guest : VLAN 70 On the router side, I have a Cisco RV220W (with the radios now turned off) and have setup VLANs with like VLAN IDs. VLAN 90 : 192.168.90.0/24 VLAN 70 : 192.168.70.0/24 As far as DHCP is concerned, each VLAN has a "DHCP Server" in the router's configuration: So with the access point connected directly to the router, everything works great. I connect to the internal network, and I get a 192.168.90.x address, and the guest network gets a 70.xxx address. Next I introduced a Cisco SG200-50 PoE switch between the router and the access point. The port is configured as a trunk port, so the VLAN tags should go right through the switch back to the router. However, when something is connected to the access point, nothing works. It isn't able to get an IP address, and manually assigning one doesn't seem to let any traffic route. Given that the access point works correctly when connected to the router directly, I believe the switch is misconfigured. What am I missing here? What can I use to better diagnose what the problem might be? It's small business equipment, so CLI access is not available. Below are screenshots of the switch's config. • What is causing ocassional white windows on my Mac?

  Hello. I'm having a very strange problem with my Mac lately. When I'm working in an app and a new window pane or sheet is displayed, sometimes it comes up completely white. Once an app is having these problems, it will continue to bring up a blank screen for that particular window (although other windows work fine). After the app is relaunched, the window is fine again. What I'm noticing that's very strange is that although the interface turns completely white, the functions of the interface are still available. So I have to "navigate blindly" around the interface, until I can relaunch. This occurs throughout the operating system. Screenshots: This is what happened when I tried opening the File menu in Lightroom app. What happened to me on Lynda.com (in Firefox) after selecting the "Software..." dropdown. (All other dropdowns were fine. Reloading the page fixed it.) When I was decompressing a file, The Unarchiver launched and opened this white window. It still decompressed the file. This is what happened one time when I opened Finder (with TotalFinder) to my Downloads folder. This is something I've never seen before. This just started happening lately. What could be the problem? • Why do I have three My Documents folders?

  I'm trying to fix my profile on Windows 7. Currently %USERPROFILE% points to C:\Users\myUsername My Documents is also at C:\Users\myUsername \\profileServer\profiles$\myUsername has TWO "My Documents" folders Neither of these folders contain what's in C:\Users\myUsername\My Documents Navigating to %USERPROFILE% in Windows Explorer displays two copies of everything, one local and one copy from the server. Programs use sort of a toss up between C:\Users\myUsername\My Documents or one of the two My Documents on profileServer. According to our sysadmins, My Documents is supposed to point to the profile server, but other folders should be local. How can I fix this so I have ONE copy of everything, with My Documents pointing to \\profileServer\profiles$\myUsername\Documents and everything else local? To be honest, I don't understand why this is so difficult and confusing. For example, why does Windows allow displaying two folders with the same name in the same directory? And why does inputting C:\Users\myUsername and %USERPROFILE% into Windows Explorer produce two different results? They should be identical. • Completed downloads freeze Windows

  The Issue Shortly after a file download via Google Chrome for Windows completes, the download will get stuck on "0 seconds left" and all other programs (except Google Chrome, for some reason, but browsing will not work) completely freezes into Windows' infamous "Not Responding" state, affecting Explorer particularly badly. Eventually, the programs will recover themselves but they will recover significantly faster if you cancel the file download, relative to how quickly you react. Performing the exact same operation immediately after cancelling the download usually works without issue. This issue occurs when with any file type (.ZIP, .MSI, .MSG, .PNG, .URL, etc) of any size from any source (Dropbox, SourceForge, Imgur, even tiny and locally-generated BLObs created by my own Chrome extension, etc) to any location.   Potential Causes As this issue is so inconsistent, I haven't been able to prove whether the issue is Chrome-specific or being caused by my system or my Chrome configuration but it's happening on both my work and home PCs. I originally suspected that this issue was being caused by security software scanning completed downloads for threats but I'm not as confident in that theory anymore as the issue persisted even after changing my security software from ESET NOD32 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro to ESET Endpoint to Microsoft Security Essentials.   System Information (of both PCs) Windows version: 7 Service Pack 1 64-bit Google Chrome version: 30.0.1599.101 (but has been happening for a long time)   Screenshots

• Netgear CG3000D new Modem/Router - Random High Ping

  Cox just recently came out and looked at my internet and decided that the modem I had was causing high latency issue. The speed was fine but the ping would spike to around 100 and over when gaming or putting a load more than browsing on the line. After they replaced it, it seems like I get better latency, but when it spikes, I get upwards of over 300 ping with like 500 jitter. I figured I would hit the serverfault universe before sending another email to Cox. I opted not to do the Cox setup as it was an extra $20 which I thought would have just setup the wireless (which I can handle). Is it a setting or something that I missed that needs to be setup? The firmware for the CG3000D is awful and not fun to use. I did change some hidden settings on the RgServices.asp page (I'll attach a screenshot). I've also heard that the Router/Modem combos are awful and that I should go back and just ask for a modem stand-alone. Any input is helpful. All screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/JX6qu#0
