    Hopefully you enjoyed yesterday, the first full day of technical sessions at Oracle OpenWorld and are ready for more today! Today we give our first technical session, Oracle Optimizer: Harnessing the Power of Optimizer Hints (Session CON8455) at 1:15pm, in Moscone South - room 103. In this session we will discuss in detail how Optimizer hints are interpreted, when they should be used, why they appear to be ignored and what you can do if you have inherited a hint ridden application. The Optimizer team will also be at the Oracle Database Demogrounds all day.  Demogrounds open at 9:45 am and run until 6pm.   • Future of a ServiceStack based Solution in the Context of Licensing

    I just want someone to clarify the following questions as Demis Bellot had announced a couple of weeks ago that ServiceStack would go commercial. Refer link below. https://plus.google.com/app/basic/stream/z12tfvoackvnx1xzd04cfrirpvybu1nje54 (Please note that when I say ServiceStack or SS I refer to all associated SS libraries such as ServiceStack.Text, etc.) If I have a solution already developed using ServiceStack today will I have to purchase a license once SS goes commercial even if I don't upgrade the SS binaries to the commercial release version? Will previous versions of SS (prior to commercial licensing) always be opensource and use the same license as before? If I fork SS today (prior to commercial licensing) on Github, would it be illegal to maintain that after SS goes commercial? If the answer to question 2 is yes, then would I still be able to fork a previous version after SS goes commercial without worrying about the commercial license (all the while maintaining and releasing the source to the public)?

  • Ambiguous Comparison Hint

    Hi everybody! Today we would like to show you some new hint which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. It's called Ambiguous Comparison hint. Its name seems to be quite fuzzy, but it describes exactly what the hint does. It tries to check all comparisons whether they are intended. Because sometimes you want to make a simple assignment, but you make a typo and comparison appears. It's really dangerous mistake because then your code doesn't work as expected. Your application can produce buggy results. So here is how it looks like: But sometimes a comparison is really intended. E.g. in return statements when you want to return a boolean, so then the hint works as expected and no warning appears. That's all for today and as usual, please test it and if you find something strange, don't hesitate to file a new issue (component php, subcomponent Editor). Thanks.

  • I removed nvidia driver and lshw -c video still shows nvidia

    Today I tried to activate the newer experimental drivers and both 304 and 310 failed to even install. So I tried the regular nvidia driver 295.40 for the 20th time today (I had lag issues and was testing Nouveau vs Nvidia with dual monitor and Unity2D-3D) Within my tty1 I tried to remove nvidia: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-settings nvidia-current and purge too reboot, nothing. So when lshw -c video displayed nvidia as my driver I tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf since I read ubuntu would "reset" the GUI conf but reboot, nothing. So next I tried sudo jockey-text --disable=xorg:nvidia_current And nothing has worked...

  • Google Bot trying to access my web app's sitemap

    Interesting find today...   I was perusing the event log on our web server today for any unexpected ASP.NET exceptions/errors. Found the following:   Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: Path '/builder/builder.sitemap' is forbidden. Request information: Request URL: https://www.bondwave.com:443/builder/builder.sitemap Request path: /builder/builder.sitemap User host address: 66.249.71.247 User: Is authenticated: False Authentication Type: Thread account name: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE   At first I thought this was maybe an attempt by a hacker to mess with the sitemap. Using a handy web site (www.network-tools.com) I did a lookup on the IP address and found it was a Google bot trying to crawl the application. In this case, I would expect an exception or 403 since the site requires authentication anyway.

  • Drive Online Engagement with Intuitive Portals and Websites

    As more and more business is being conducted via online channels, engaging users and making them more productive and efficient though these online channels is becoming critical. These users could be customers, partners or employees and while the respective channels through which they interact might be different, these users do increasingly interact with your business through the Web, or mobile devices or now through various social mediums.  Businesses need a user engagement strategy and solution that allows them to deliver targeted and personalized content and applications to users through the various online mediums and touch points.  The customer experience today is made up of an ongoing set of interactions with organizations across many channels, online and offline.  The Direct channel (including sales reps, email and mail) is an important point of contact, as is the Contact Center.  Contact Centers rely on the phone as a means of interacting with customers, and also more now than ever, the Web as well.  However, the online organization is often managed separately from the Contact Center organization within a business. In-store is an important channel for retailers, offering Point-of-Service for human interactions, and Kiosks which enable self-service. Kiosks are a Web-enabled touch point but in-store kiosks are often managed by the head of retail operations, rather than the online organization.  And of course, the online channel, including customer interactions with an organization via digital means -- on the website, mobile websites, and social networking sites, has risen to paramount importance in recent years in the customer experience. Historically all of these channels have been managed separately. The result of all of this fragmentation is that the customer touch points with an organization are siloed.  Their interactions online are not known and respected in their dealings in-store.  Their calls to the contact center are not taken as input into what the website offers them when they arrive. Think of how many times you’ve fallen victim to this. Your experience with the company call center is different than the experience in-store. Your experience with the company website on your desktop computer is different than your experience on your iPad. I think you get the point. But the customer isn’t the only one we need to look at here, as employees and the IT organization have challenges as well when it comes to online engagement. There are many common tools and technologies that organizations have been using to try and engage users, whether it’s customers, employees or partners. Some have adopted different blog and wiki technologies (some hosted, some open source, sometimes embedded in platforms), to things like tagging, file sharing and content management, or composite applications for self-service applications and activity streams. Basically, there are so many different tools & technologies that each address different aspects of user engagement. Now, one of the challenges with this, is that if we look at each individual tool, typically just implementing for example a file sharing and basic collaboration solution, may meet the needs of the business user for one aspect of user engagement, but it may not be the best solution to engage with customers and partners, or it may not fit with IT standards such as integrating with their single sign on tools or their corporate website. Often, the scenario is that businesses are having to acquire multiple pieces and parts as well as build custom applications to meet their needs. Leaving customers and partners with a more fragmented way of interacting with the company. Every organization has some sort of enterprise balancing act between the needs of the business user and the needs and restrictions enforced by enterprise IT groups. As we’ve been discussing, we all know that the expectations for online engagement have changed since the days of the static, one-size fits all website. With these changes have come some very difficult organizational challenges as well. Today, as a business user, you want to engage with your customers, and your customers expect you to know who they are. They expect you to recall the details they’ve provided to you on your website, to your CSRs and to your sales people. They expect you to remember their purchases, their preferences and their problems. And they expect you to know who they are, equally well, across channels, including your web presence. This creates a host of challenges for today’s business users. Delivering targeted, relevant content online is now essential for converting prospects into customers and for engendering long term loyalty. Business users need the ability to leverage customer data from different sources to fuel their segmentation and targeting strategies and to easily set-up, manage and optimize online campaigns. Also critical, they need the ability to accomplish these things on-the-fly, at the speed of the marketplace, while making iterative improvements.  These changing expectations put a host of demands on the IT organization as well. The web presence must be able to scale to support the delivery of personalized and targeted content to thousands of site visitors without sacrificing performance. And integration between systems becomes more important as well, as organizations strive to obtain one view of the customer culled from WCM data, CRM data and more. So then, how do you solve these challenges and meet the growing demands of your users?  You need a solution that: Unifies every customer interaction across all channels Personalizes the products and content that interest the customer and to the device Delivers targeted promotions to the right customer Engages and improve employee productivity Provides self-service access to applications Includes embedded in-context social   So how then do you achieve this level of online engagement, complete customer experience and engage your employees?   • Download/submission directories are dead? Are they good for SEO?

    We have just released a new major software product version. In the past if you wanted visibility you would create a standardized pad file and you would submit it to hundreds of directories or you used web service that would do that for you. These directories would then serve as first incoming links to your web site. How about today? I think download directories are pretty much dead? Do you think this is still good SEO approach today? Are these software download directories useless?

    In the last few months since I started learning F# I have begin to notice an increase in the number of people blogging about the language. Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

Tags Matching Some of your enhancements talked  about paired tags matching to be able to see matching tags at first glance.We have good news for you that this feature you can try out already in our latest PHP Development builds and of course later in NetBeans 7.3. Unpaired Tags Errors To make easier detecting of template syntax issues, we provide basic tags pairing. If you forgot to begin some paired Smarty tag or you end it unexpectedly you should get error hint which complains about your issue. That's all for today.   • Focusing on Mobile @ Oracle OpenWorld

    Plenty of exciting trends in the industry today: Cloud, Big Data, Mobile, etc. The first two are amazing of course, but for me, it's mobile, mobile and... MOBILE.   Why? Think back to the mozilla browser (Marc Andreessen's mozilla, not today's mozilla.org), Netscape and the nascent beginnings of the World Wide Web. Amazing times. Companies were just starting to set up their home pages, basic HTML, hyperlinks, images, ooooh, aaaah.  Yahoo! was *the* search engine back then. :-\   Anywhoo, I would pose that mobile today, we are in a similar junction. Sure, there's millions of apps on Apple's App Store and Google Play, but within the enterprise, it's just getting started. I'm talking about going beyond the simple, tactical apps such as calendaring, contacts or directory service lookup. And while mobile first a common mantra, I'm referring to mobile plus which includes and looks upon the whole enterprise holistically and adds new parameters, such as your GPS location, perhaps even your vital signs. (Apple's health kit?)  Everything is going mobile. Everything connected. But with the enterprise - scalability, security, integration, app management, user management, etc. Amazing times ahead. Ok, got that off my mind. Oracle OpenWorld 2014 - Going Mobile!  If you're coming to the big dance, I've highlighted some key mobile sessions below. And if you see me around, and there's a bar within reach, high five me for a beer.   • What job is better for a newbie, one that requires you to create a new program frequently, or something like software maintenance?

    One of my friends has just completed his college degree and is ready to join the programmers' world. Today he has two offers, one with new projects every time, and another with software maintenance. The remaining factors are not important to him, what he wants to know is which option is better? My experience goes with second option because my first job was the maintenance one and I could learn how my fellow programmers made mistakes while coding . But I soon switched to a new job which required me to create new project every time. I enjoyed both but I must admit that my first job has given me a more advantage today. But it's not necessary that my experience can give benefit to him. But I want to know what is general approach? If I have to give him final verdict on these two, what should I tell him? Edit Everybody deserves one up vote here, I am really learning a lot from you guys.

  • how to uninstall sphinx server

    I installed (from sources) yesterday sphinx server and didn't think of configuring it properly, so I left the default installation directory (/usr/local). Today I realized that it created all of it's directories inside that directory, instead of creating its own (as I wrongly thought). So today I started again the installation and specified explicitly the location where to install. After that I removed the previous directories from /usr/local that were created when the first installation was done (bin, etc, var). So I thought of giving it a test. I created the .conf file and wanted to run the indexer. But now, the indexer always tries to search the .conf file in the old location (obviously does not find anything) and when I specify where to find the .conf file it gives me errors for each of the configuration settings present. I know I did something wrong when I deleted manually those files and that's why I'm asking you if have any ideas how to correctly uninstall sphinx. Thank you.

  • Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 SP1 released to manufacturers

    SP1 went RTM today which means it will be widely available soon. According  to the Microsoft server division blog, the service pack will be available to Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as to Microsoft volume licensing customers, on Feb. 16, 2011.   • Newly installed 12.04 on Radeon or NVIDIA type of gfx card?

    I use a Nvidia Quadro NVS 290/PCIe/SSE2 at work with dual monitor setup. Since 11.10 things has gone downwards with performance. But now with 12.04 performance is even worse, and I can agree that the 290 is old and puny. So when I look what low profile cards I can get to my computer today, the choice it Radeon HD 6570 or NVIDIA Quadro 600. I have always used Nvidia on linux beq I think that historically their drivers worked better. But which one do you recommend today on 12.04 and Unity3d? -- Regards Falk
