Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

  • Proper password handling for login

    I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

  • K3b - cdrecord has no permission

    I use Ubuntu 12.04. Today I tried to burn an ISO file in a DVD-R disk using K3b. It used to work, but today, after one and a half minutes, it stopped saying that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device". I searched for a solution, and I found that I had to do something with k3bsetup. I tried to use it, but I had no idea what to do, and I couldn't find a guide, so I checked cdrecord and clicked apply. Now there is another error; it says "cdrecord returns an unknown error! (code 254)". What should I do?

  • Announcement: How-To Series Explaining Customizations Step By Step

    Yesterday we officially launched our new YouTube channel.  Today we are announcing another initiative that we have been working on for a while: to help you learn common customization tasks, we are going to publish a series of detailed How-To documents with lots of screenshots.  Many of these will also be the script for a YouTube video, giving you the choice to see it in action or go through the steps yourself guided by a PDF document. The focus of the initial set of How-Tos will be JDeveloper/ADF customizations, but over time we will expand into other areas.  Today's first document is meant to get everyone up to the point where a JDeveloper environment is up and running: a white paper that shows you how to set up JDeveloper, configure the integrated WLS domain, and make a very, very simple customization work.     Is there any smart way to think about polygon budget relating to PC gaming today? My game will have one static 3d background scene and two fighters. No more enemies. I am thinking about having animated 3d models in the background for atmosphere, like spectators. So how could i find out what the polygon count for the player models and background scenarios could be. I guess the question is, what is a for today typical polygon count that most PCs can handle?

  • Collaborative work (small team) - Best practices

    I'm currently working in a very small team of programmers (2-3) and I'm looking for advices/best practices on how to organise our work. We're all working on the same application using PHP. Today we're kind of all working on our way. Today situation: List item that have to be worked on by each dev 1/week. What has to be done is defined at a high functional level (ex: Build the search engine for this product..) Commit / merge our individual branches (git) every week before the next meeting No real dev rules, no code review No test written (aouutch) Problems faced: Code quality issue: discovering someone else code is sometime tough (inline, variable+function+class names, spaces, comments..) Changes in already existing classes (impact on someone else work) Responsibility of each dev unclear: after getting someone else code and discover something messy, should I make the change? Should he make the change? How to plan those things,... What I'm looking for: Basically I'm looking into structuring the way we develop things in order to avoid frustration and improve overall quality. How to define coding standards (naming convention, code rules...)? Do you you any validation script to make sure code is valid before committing? Do you think that defining an architect role in the team is needed? Someone that would actually define what has to be developed during the next phase. By defining interfaces or class descriptions that have to be written. (Does it make sense in such a small team?) Today we're losing time into understanding what others did or tried to do, we're also losing time in discussion like "you should have done it that way! Why is this class doing that and not that..? Shouldn't we have a embedded class rather that this set of data...". I'm looking into a work process, maybe with more defined responsibilities and process in order to improve our performance. If you have experience, advices, best practices or anything to share that we could benefit from it will be much appreciated! Thanks a lot for your time!

  • MP3 files downloaded from cloud incomplete/cut off (Android app)

    I noticed today on my phone (Droid X running Android 2.2.1) that when streaming the Ubuntu One app would skip to the next song before the previous one had finished. Looking into it, one of the mp3s downloaded from the server was only 2.5MB instead of 4.2MB as it shows on the server itself via one.ubuntu.com. It's happened with multiple tracks today (I remember it happening once the first time I used the app too but shrugged it off as a glitch). The app itself shows a star on the playlist item indicating the file was downloaded even though it was apparently cut off for some reason, perhaps lack of good cell coverage, or some sort of dropped connection. It seems like the latter may be happening and instead of showing an error or retrying it just stops and shows the download is complete.

  • Running external commands improved a bit

    Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors.   • Second monitor stopped working

    After setting up 11.10 today, I seem to be having problems with my dual monitor set up. It worked without issues in Mint but today after I switched to 11.10 only one monitor seems to function. This seems a little odd to me. During setup both monitors functioned without issue, although they were mirroring each other both monitors but as soon as it booted into Unity my secondary monitor stopped working. I checked under settings-display and the second monitor doesn't seem to even be detected. On the off chance it had something to do with drivers, I upgraded the proprietary drivers to the latest version with zero success. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

  • Website Redirects [on hold]

    I've been having a bit of an issue today. I run Gematsu.com. At first I thought the site has been going slow all day due to the amount of hits we've been getting the past couple days. But then I realized we'd received even less today, so something wasn't adding up. I ran a check on a website testing site.Turns out I have a bunch of redirects from URLs that I've never heard of. I don't know if they're what's slowing the site down, but I can tell you the site wasn't taking a minute to load yesterday. I tried removing my advertising to see if it was anything on their end, but I still got largely the same results.

  • Performance issues with repeatable loops as control part

The problem is that i find it quite hard to filter the calls without losing performance.
