• Exchange 2013 goes RTM!

  Exchange 2013 has been signed off and is now RTM! Hoozaaa!!   From the Exchange team blog: Today we reached an important milestone in the development of the new Exchange. Moments ago, the Exchange engineering team signed off on the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. This milestone means the coding and testing phase of the project is complete and we are now focused on releasing the new Exchange via multiple distribution channels to our business customers. General availability is planned for the first quarter of 2013. We have a number of programs that provide business customers with early access so they can begin testing, piloting and adopting Exchange within their organizations: We will begin rolling out new capabilities to Office 365 Enterprise customers in our next service updates, starting in November through general availability. Volume Licensing customers with Software Assurance will be able to download Exchange Server 2013 through the Volume Licensing Service Center by mid-November. Oracle Database Mobile Server (DMS for short) provides a simple and effective way to deal with the management challenge.  DMS supports data synchronization between a central Oracle database server and data on mobile devices.  It also provides authentication, encryption and application and device management.  Finally, DMS is a highly scalable solution that can be used to manage hundreds of thousands of devices.   Here’s a simplified outline of how such a solution might work. Each device runs local sync and mgmt agents that handle bidirectional data flow with an Oracle enterprise backend, run remote commands, and provide status to the management console. For example, mobile admins could monitor multiple networks of mobile devices, upgrade their software remotely, and even destroy the local database on a compromised device. DMS supports either Oracle Berkeley DB or SQLite for device-local storage, and runs on a wide variety of mobile platforms. The schema for the device-local database is pretty simple – it contains the name of the application that’s installed on the device as well as details such as product name, version number, time of last access etc. Each mobile user has an account on the monitoring system.  DMS supports authentication via the Oracle database authentication mechanisms or alternately, via an external authentication server such as Oracle Identity Management. DMS also provides the option of encrypting the data on disk as well as while it is being synchronized. Whenever a device connects with DMS, it sends the list of all local application changes to the server; the server updates the central repository with this information.  Synchronization can be triggered on-demand, whenever there’s a change on the device (e.g. new application installed or an existing application removed) or via a rule-based schedule (e.g. every Saturday). Synchronization is very fast and efficient, since only the changes are propagated.  This includes resume capability; should synchronization be interrupted for any reason, the next synchronization will resume where the previous synchronization was interrupted. If the device should be lost or stolen, DMS has the capability to remove the applications and/or data from the device. This ability to control access to sensitive data and applications is critical in the corporate environment. The central repository also allows the IT manager to track the kinds of applications that mobile users use and recommend patches and upgrades, while still allowing the mobile user full control over what applications s/he downloads and uses on the device.  This is useful since most devices are used for corporate as well as personal information. In certain restricted use scenarios, the IT manager can also control whether a certain application can be installed on a mobile device.  Should an unapproved application be installed, it can easily be removed the next time the device connects with the central server. Oracle Database mobile server provides a simple, effective and highly secure and scalable solution for managing the data and applications for the mobile workforce.

• Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Release

  Microsoft is planning to release the second edition of SQL Server 2008, the new edition will named SQL Server 2008 R2 due to be released by May 1st 2010.   Amongst the change on the edition is pricing which is anticipated to go up by 25% for the Standard Edition and about 15% for the Enterprise Edition. As for the features, there are some very cool additions  including PowerPivot for SharePoint, Master Data Services and Multi-Server Administration. • Is it my responsibility to code for errors on a completely separate website and domain when redirecting or doing a single sign on?

  If my application is responsible for redirecting/doing a single sign on to a destination managed by a third party, in general, where should I draw the line for error handling during this process? If an error happens on the other application's end, is it reasonable for my stakeholder to expect the application I am working with to share responsibility for handling these scenarios? Notes: I am going to keep solutions limited to those that entail only one request--I am familiar with the "do an xmlhttprequest and see how that fares before doing anything else" approach. I am speaking in terms of an enterprise-level application with fairly decent customer traffic.

• Release an upgraded iOS app with a different revenue model

  I am starting a new iOS project and initially plan release a simple free version to gather feedback. I don't intend to monetize or market this initial version. However, I believe "Version 2" of this app will be good enough to pay for. I would prefer to release Version 2 as an upgrade from Version 1 rather than release it as a separate app. This way I can reserve a name for the app. It will also be easier to keep everything in a single repository. Are there any downsides of this approach? It's my understanding that I can change the price of an app at any point in time, so it shouldn't be an issue transitioning to a paid app, should it?

Before that I had been working on Metro, an open source Web services project,  in Sun's Glassfish organization for 5 years, as one of the architects for security. • Bitbucket and a small development house

  I am in the process of finally rolling Mercurial as our version control system at work. This is a huge deal for everyone as, shockingly, they have never used a VCS. After months of putting the bug in management's ears, they finally saw the light and now realise how much better it is than working with a network of shared folders! In the process of rolling this out, I am thinking of different strategies to manage our stuff and I am leaning towards using Bitbucket as our "central" repository. The projects in Bitbucket will solely be private projects and everyone will push and pull from there. I am open to different suggestions, but has anyone got a similar setup? If so, what caveats have you encountered?

• LIghtspark Playback Crashes [on hold]

  My introduction is for my personal health: I hate Flash and then HTMLs finally wil be the only standard around =)(/)$§%&$%$ I installed Lightspark from a repository. Butt no video playback in FF oder Chromium. In FF I usually get one of the following messages within the black playback box (I can't copy it) Cause: Unhandled action script exception Cause: args[0]&&args[0]->getClass && args[0]->getClass(isSubClass) Can't read more since the error message is bigger than the playback frame. • Versioning Strategy for Service Interfaces JAR

  I'm building a service oriented architecture composed (mostly) of Java-based services, each of which is a Maven project (in an individual repository) with two submodules: common, and server. The common module contains the service's interfaces that clients can include in their project to make service calls. The server submodule contains the code that actually powers the service. I'm now trying to figure out an appropriate versioning strategy for the interfaces, such that each interface change results in a new common jar, but changes to the server (so long as they don't impact the contract of the interfaces) receive the same common jar. I know this is pretty simple to do manually (simply increment the server version and don't touch the common one), but this project will be built and deployed by a CI server, and I'd like to come up with a strategy for automatically versioning these. The only thing I have been able to come up with so far is to have the CI server md5 the service interfaces.

• Detect frameworks and/or CMS utilized on websites in Firefox

  I'm redesigning the website for my academic library and am examining other sites to determine to identify the technologies used. Things like: Web frameworks Javascript frameworks Server-side technology Content management system Now I've had some real success in Firefox using plugins like Wappalyzer, Firebug, and the DOM Inspector. But some sites just don't display any of the info. I'm looking for using these tools, especially it seems it an enterprise-level CMS is being used. Does anyone know of any other tools to detect this kind of data? Also with Firebug & the DOM Inspector, there is a lot of info. displayed and I wondered if there was a way to derive the presence of server-side technologies, CMS's, etc. within certain elements of a web page? Also, if this question is more relevant to another Stack Exchange site, please let me know and I'll post it there instead. Much thanks, Jason
