• What are the strategies available to minimise badblocks on an encrypted partition?

  Let me explain my backup strategy and the problem I am facing. My current backup strategy: Open encrypted container and execute Carbon Copy Cleaner on it at least once a week. Rotate backup disks. Problem: I have an Truecrypt partition on my 1st external hard disk. I recently found out that some files on this encrypted partition cannot be read due to bad blocks (reported by Antonio Diaz's GNU 'ddrescue'). My backup strategy is ineffective in this scenario because bad blocks are discovered during backup. Possible strategy Strategy #0: Have the encrypted partition over a RAID 1 with 2 disks. Is this a suitable strategy ? Strategy #1: Do you think of any other one ? Environment: Mac OS X 10.8 External 2.5" hard disk (SATA) No RAID

• Color Temperature in PowerPoint 2010

  I'm teaching PowerPoint 2010 and it's got some great new features. Unfortunately, one that I can't wrap my head around is the the new "Color Temperature" feature for pictures. I do understand color temperature in general (i.e. the lower the number, the "colder"/"oranger" - the higher the number, the "hotter"/"bluer"). The way PowerPoint implements it seems opposite from most other programs - like Photo Filter in Photoshop. So I need to understand what this feature is in more detail so I can explain it to my students. Does anyone know?

• Combo ports and SFP

  I have Netgear GSM7324s prosafe switch. Switch has 24x1G ports. 4 ports are labeled as combo ports while 2 are labeled as SFP ports. I connected 2 PCs (each having 1gig and 10Gig NICs), with the switch using 1 & 10 Gig cables. Whenever, I ping the PCs the pinging is not working. As soon as, I removed the 10G cables, the ping starts working. Can someone please explain that what's going on. Also it would be very helpful if you can tell me the concept of combo ports, SFP ports in easy words?

• PowerDNS: multiple supermasters and transfering domain

  Hi, I've got a setup with multiple supermasters (bind) and multiple superslaves (pdns). It all seems to work just fine, pdns is being updated when I'm adding or changing a domain. But, when I want to migrate a domain from one master to another, pdns doesn't like it. It tells me the new server isn't a master for this domain, although I deleted the domain on the old server. Now, I think that part of the problem is, that pdns doesn't get an update when a domain is deleted, which would also explain a lot of dead domains in my pdns. It looks like the slave is constantly polling a server and getting RCODE=5 back. The master isn't aware of the domain and the slave thinks the master still serves that domain. Anyone familiar with this problem?

In windows, to right click any where - or to bring up a pop up menu we just type a key right beside on window key / pop-up key or press Shift + F10 to bring up pop up any where. • Is there a way to set up an SMTP relay that allows users of a web app to have the web app send email

  the web service sends out emails on behalf of the users to their customers. So [email protected] uses webservice and webservice sends emails . The emails should be appearing as coming from [email protected]. Currently what we are trying to do is to configure webservice to act as an email client for each user, each user being able to create their own profile in which they need to configure their smtp server credentials. But given that there are more options for configurations than you can shake your stick at -not to mention trying to explain to users what info to get from where, POP b4 smtp, TLS, SSL, AUTH,etc) I am wondering if there could be a different way. How, if at all could this be approached? Can I set up a postfix server to do what I need to without running into another admin. nightmare or being blocked for spamming? Thank you for your insights

I get this output when checking the total amount of space I'm using on my Walkman. david@Milton:/media$ du -b --max-depth=0 WALKMAN/ 14823290693 WALKMAN/ david@Milton:/media$ du -k --max-depth=0 WALKMAN/ 14523776 WALKMAN/ Last I checked, 14,523,776 KB * 1024 = 14,872,646,624 B, not 14,823,290,693. Dividing the two, their "K" unit seems to be equal to about 1020.62 rather than 1024 as advertised. This is causing some errors in the program I wrote to sync my Walkman, so it fills up faster than it claims to. Can anyone explain this discrepency?

• Windows 2008 IIS 7 PHP Caching / Blank Page Problems?

  I don't even know how to explain this. The only thing I can think is 'why am I working with a windows server?' I am renting a dedicated 1and1 server - I installed PHP myself - with fast CGI and caching (pretty sure I checked OK on something about dynamic caching for PHP when I installed it.) Every few hours of intensive php processing - my pages start locking up - usually just showing blank pages - with no errors whatsoever. Just now, I checked a page - let's call it a.php - and it was showing the results of b.php - I thought I had been hacked! Simply restarting the IIS server however, fixes the problem. Any ideas / help / knowledge on similar problems with windows 2008?

So now if I add more columns, this number does not get updated. The field is actually called "Grade" in the table. So is there a way of coding this so that no matter which column it is in, "Grade" is always updated? I suppose one solution is that we add a line that find what is the column number for "Grade"?

• How do you add more space to a Fedora (LVM) partition?

  In a nutshell, i have a VM that ran out of space. I increased the size of the VM's harddrive to be 4 times bigger but the OS partition is still only using 1x the space. I need to change the LVM partition to take up the extra 4x space but I don't know how to extend the LVM partition. (NOTE: To make the screenshots given below I had to boot from a live-cd for gnome-partition-manager (aka gparted). Very unfortunately gparted is only able to "detect LVM" and can't do any LVM operations.) Here is what "gparted" shows. Please notice that the "resize" option is not available: The Problem: I can't find good directions<1 on how to grow the LVM partition via GUI or command-line! How do you grow a LVM partition that was created by the default Fedora install? If you are giving command line directions. Please explain what each line of commands does.

• Unicorn 3 throwing tons of errors (Rails 3.0.3, Unicorn 3.0)

  I just tried to upgrade to Unicorn 3.0. I changed my Gemfile and did a bundle install. When restarting my Unicorn I got tons of errors beginning with: Unhandled listen loop exception #<Errno::ENOSYS: Function not implemented - accept>. /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/unicorn-3.0.0/lib/unicorn/http_server.rb:593:in `kgio_tryaccept' I’m on Ubuntu 10.04. And, can anyone explain to me why the heck I can’t use an older version of a Gem than the most recent installed? After getting the errors above I just changed the version number of Unicorn in my Gemfile to 1.1.4. But this didn’t solve the problem, Ruby told me that You have already activated unicorn 3.0.0, but your Gemfile requires unicorn 1.1.4. Consider using bundle exec. (Gem::LoadError) Do I really have to? Thanks in advance for your help, guys.

  I opened port 25374, this is eMule TCP port, then I use canyouseeme.org to check if it is really opened. I got the weird problem : when eMule is running, canyouseeme.org see my port. I got the message : "Success: I can see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xx on port (25374) Your ISP is not blocking port 25374" When I close eMule then check the port again on canyouseeme.org I got : Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xx on port (25374) Reason: Connection timed out But when I turn off the windows firewall I got a different error : Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xx on port (25374) Reason: Connection refused Can anyone please explain to me why it happened like that and how to make the port always opened ?   going to try my best to explain: our exchange 2003 was migrated to exchange 2007 (was not here for the migration). Looking in active directory sites and services - services - Microsoft exchange - company - address list container - recipient update services i have two recipient update services 1) recipient update service (enterprise configuration) 2) recipient update service (my-domain) my guess is one of these is left from the old exchange 2003. (im guessing this because the migration was not done properly, the exchange server was never actually uninstall, it was just taken offline, and then later disposed of). could having two of these cause me issues, and if so, how do i know which one i could get rid of ? Im asking because i honestly have no idea. it might even be nothing. thanks

• Compiling zip component for PHP 5.2.11 in MAMP PRO

  I installed MAMP PRO on my Macbook Pro (10.6) some time ago. Now I would like to use zip functions in php. I found that I must add zip.so to my extension folder and edited php.ini. On my computer I have two different versions of PHP one in MAMP folder and other in user/lib which was pre-installed on my system. Now I wish to compile my zip library for MAMP version. I got zip sources for my version of PHP then in terminal called function /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/phpize so it uses mamp php version ./configure make then I moved compile zip.so to extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613. When MAMP is launched it returns this error [11-Apr-2010 16:33:27] PHP Warning: PHP Startup: zip: Unable to initialize module Module compiled with module API=20090626, debug=0, thread-safety=0 PHP compiled with module API=20060613, debug=0, thread-safety=0 These options need to match in Unknown on line 0 Can somebody explain to me how to do this the right way.

  HI, I've created volumes in equallogic in PS 6000 XV(having 2 member which is in 1 pool), checked & those volumes can be easily detected my ISCSI software in windows. But the problem with ESX , not able to see the assigned disk on ESX server, I can explain what I've done: 1.Created Cluster with enabled HA & DRS 2.Added 3 ESX4 HOST 3.Added VMkernel & configured in all 3 ESX4, enabled vmotion & FT on the same adapter. 4.went to iSCSI storage adapter properties, enabled iSCSI 5.Trying to discover the available storage with the controller IP on dynamic discovery, but not able to see the assigned storage Note: the same volume is accessed to windows that means there is no issue from storage , am I right ???? • Connecting FreeNAS 8 to Mac OS X Lion LDAP Server

  I currently have Mac OS X Lion Server running from a MacMini and want to use it purely as an LDAP server for authentication for FreeNAS 8. I have FreeNAS setup and running on a VM, all features working correctly and as expected however I cannot connect to my LDAP server (MacMini). Error message; **Nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server – server is unavailable** For LDAP service settings in FreeNAS, I know my Hostname and Base DN are correct (exact copies of what I set originally and ones that are shown in server:open directory overview) however I am unsure what to enter for Root bind DN, password and Suffix’s. I have researched into where I can find these out and other than following the FreeNAS examples it appears there is a way to find out within the Server Workgroup Manager specific to my settings – however this function is unavailable to me and cannot be ‘ticked’ to view for some strange reason. Some forums explain how Root bind DN should be uid=admin, dc=… and others cn=admin, dc=… – I’m rather confused and would appreciate your help or advice with this.

  I'm using SpeedTracer with GoogleChrome to measure the load times of requested resources. The SpeedTracer site says: NETWORK_RESOURCE_RESPONSE "Indicates that the renderer has started receiving bits from the resource loader" NETWORK_RESOURCE_FINISH "Indictes a resource load is successful and complete." In my mind that means we would always see a network resource response (bytes are arriving) before we see a finish (all bytes received). This doesn't seem to be the case at all. Here is a sample: Request Timing @33519ms for 926ms Response Timing @34445ms for -847ms Total Timing @33519ms for 78ms I'm guessing response time isn't supposed to be negative. Can someone explain this or is this a bug? I'm using Chrome 10.0.612.3 dev with a SpeedTracer I downloaded today.

• Weblogic 10.3 weblogic.jar classpath issues

  I am upgrading an old WLS8.1 app to 10.3 (11g) My ant build includes only the new weblogic.jar in the compile classpath and the build runs with no issues but when I include weblogic.jar as a libeary in the IDE (Intellij) i see many unresolved imports (for example: weblogic.xml.xpath.DOMXPath) when I check the weblogic.jar I see that the classes are indeed missing from it. compiling with verbose revealed that by including weblogic.jar in the ant classpath, many other jars in the BEA_HOME/modules are loaded to the classpath as well (for example: com.bea.core.xml.weblogic.xpath_1.4.0.0.jar) Can anyone explain what is going on? How can I fix my IDE classpath - do I need to import all the module-jars? Many of the module jars seems like they are there to support old deprecated weblogic 8 APIs (like: weblogic.xml.xpath.DOMXPath) how can I exclude these modules from my ant build? (I want to expose the APIs I need to upgrade) Thanks, NY

  I need some clarification if I understood this correctly. I've been reading about Active Directory and naming my domain, and the reason Microsoft didn't suggest using external public domain was DNS Split. If I understood correctly (and please correct me if I did) in this case I have two Domain Name Servers, both doing the same job, but one of them is internal (in my company i.e.) and the other is a public one.   I'm using WKHTMLTOPDF on a 64-bit Linux server and I'm running into problems with the version. Seen here: http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/downloads/list There's slim pickins when it comes to pre-compiled binaries. I started with version 0.9.9 which has a few bugs. I upgraded to 0.11.0 RC 1 to find a slew of new problems, namely the following: http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/issues/detail?id=730 I think 0.10 RC 2 would work, and the thread above suggests compiling from the source has a fix for the error I'm getting, but I don't know how to do that. Can anyone explain how I can create a static binary myself, or would anyone be willing to create and post one for the countless people waiting for this fix?

• Remote support via VPN without split tunnel

  my title might not be very clear, but I'll explain my setup in more detail now. We have several customers (companies) that need to be remotely supported. At these customers we have servers running with our software that needs to be serviced. These servers are (almost) never connected to the internet. For this we have multiple PC's running VPN clients. These PC's run a VNC server so our service engineers can login from their home laptop remotely to these PC's and connect from there to our customer via the VPN connection on the PC. The problem is however that several customers do not allow split tunneling. That means that when we connect via VPN to such a customer the VNC connection drops. Our current workaround is using a Citrix VM which we control via XenCenter console, but it's quite slow. Are there common solutions to handle this?

Can someone explain what is going on or if these rules are even valid to cause this error? I know it's supposedly a recursion protection.. but these protect against SQL injection so I'm confused.

• Constantly diminishing free space on fedora 17

  I don't know how to explain this other than to say that my computer seems to magically run out of free when it runs for a while. The output of df -h . oh my home direction is below /dev/mapper/vg_vmadiath--dev-lv_home 50G 47G 0 100% /home When I run sudo du -cks * | sort -rn | head -11 on /home I get the following output. I got this from decreasing free space on fedora 12 32744344 total 32744328 vmadiath 16 lost+found If I restart my system things seem to fix themselves and I'm left with about 20 or 25GB of free space. I'm running XFCE with XMonad as my window manager under fedora 17. Programs I'm running include the XFCE terminal, grep, find, firefox, eclipse, libre-office writer, zsh, emacs. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'll gladly give you any other output you might need.

  I have some very simple queries that occasionally run very slowly. The table viewed_sites has about 10 - 20 rows. Running EXPLAIN ANALYZE always gives a runtime of less than 3 milliseconds. When the query is run automatically (every 10 seconds) it occasionally takes over a second to run. The query: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') The table: CREATE TABLE viewed_sites ( site_id character varying(4) NOT NULL, last_viewed timestamp with time zone DEFAULT now() NOT NULL ); The (occasional) log result: 2010-05-24 15:47:55 UTC LOG: duration: 1044.632 ms statement: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') It's a horribly vague question, but what could be causing this? I suppose it comes down to CPU, RAM, HDD or some combination of the above. Postgresql 8.3, Ubuntu 8.04 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz 2 GiB RAM
