• Virtual system drive is split between separate LUNs

  My hardware VMWare guy told me that a Win2008R2 server I have has a D drive that is split between two separate LUNs. He could not tell me if that's a good thing or bad just that it's not standard practice for him. Would you please explain the benefits or drawbacks of this setup? Thanks EDIT Some additional info. What happened was I had D drive already allocated. Then I asked for more. They said there's no more space on whatever LUN my D drive is on so the option they gave me was that part of the D drive will be on one LUN and other part will be on another LUN. Hope that helps

• MySQL dump, output each table row on a new line whilst using --extended-insert

  I'm having an issue, where for ease of use, I'd like to be able to format a command line MySQL dump so that each row of a given table is on a new line when using the --extended-insert option. Usually when using --extended-insert, every row of a given table is outputted on one line, and as far as I am aware there's no way to change this, other than post-processing the dump with perl or such like. The format I'm looking for is: -- -- Dumping data for table `ww_tbCountry` -- INSERT INTO `ww_tbCountry` (`iCountryId_PK`, `vCountryName`, `vShortName`, `iSortFlag`, `fTax`, `vCountryCode`, `vSageTaxCode`) VALUES (22, 'Albania', 'AL', 1, 0.00, '8', 'T9'), (33, 'Austria', 'AT', 1, 15.00, '40', 'T9'), (40, 'Belarus', 'BY', 1, 0.00, '112', 'T9'), (41, 'Belgium', 'BE', 1, 15.00, '56', 'T9'), (51, 'Bulgaria', 'BG', 1, 15.00, '100', 'T9' However, when I dump a database using Phpmyadmin, using --extended-insert, each row is dumped on a new line (as shown by the example above). • SharePoint 2010 MySites - Simple explanation needed!

  I've been playing around with the 2010 beta for a couple of weeks, experimenting with topology options etc. I think I've got myself totally confused as to how it works hence if there's any SP experts out there that can explain things in simple terms for me I'd appreciate it! I want to setup a farm with 3 servers providing the content & MySites. I presume that the way to do this is to load balance or DNS round robin traffic between the 3 servers. The bit where I'm confused is that My Site Settings page asks for a specific My Site Host hence all my site traffic will be pushed to a single server even though we have 3 in the farm. If this hosts fails I presume MySites will be unavailable. Is this right? How do I configure it so that access to MySites is load balanced across the 3 servers in the farm?

  I found lots of Web sites and books explaining how memory management worked on the 8086 and later x86 CPUs in Real Mode. I understand, I think, how two 16 bit values, segment address and offset are combined to get a linear 20 bit physical address (shift segment four bits to the left, add offset; segments are 64K and start every 16 bytes). But I couldn't find any good Web sites or books that explained how memory management works in Protected Mode, specifically the differences between 80286 and 80386. Can anyone point me to a good Web site or book (or explain it right here)? (For extra credit, i.e. an upvote, how does it work in Long Mode?)

• What does Libre Office do to an existing Excel sheet to bloat its size?

  I try to avoid using Libre Office on existing Excel created workbooks because of the potential for unpleasant results. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..) Libre Office on Mac OS 10.6 Types of data stored in this workbook: Text Integers 1 column with a simple formula spanning the entire worksheet representing that particular row (=CONCATENATE(A2285,B2285,D2285), =CONCATENATE(A2286,B2286,D2286), etc.) Total of 3,500 plus rows Here is a photo with details described within, but I'll go ahead and explain the photo as well: This screenshot is from Dropbox history of the .xlsx workbook. • ACL mess after rsync on Windows 2008

  The permissions in the ACL are not in the right order on some files and directories after having used rsync to synchronize directory trees. The stuff works well as it is on Windows 2003. Can someone explain this in detail. What exactly changed regarding ACLs from Windows 2003 to 2008? We fixed the rights with icalcs afterwards. But this thing seems a bit weird. Maybe 2008 has some restrictions or more checks 2003 did not have.

• Using PCIe and onboard together

  I'm currently using my PCI Express card to run 2 monitors and my onboard to run another. It works fine despite people saying it won't. I use a gadget to monitor my PCI card but would also like to monitor my onboard GPU as well. I play a game called Eve Online and when I'm running my accts I can only get 20 fps. Before, when I was using just my PCI card, I was getting 60+. To solve this, I set the display options to interval immediate, it was set to one before. My computer handles it no problem at all, but I was always told this was immpossible. I was hoping someone could explain how and why this is working. Thanks! • my file download speed is 180-200kbps but speedtest is showing 1.7mbps and i am subsribed to 2mbps pack?

  i'm from Malaysia. I am subscribed to 2mbps pack from my country's ISP. But all i get is only 200kbps when download files from the internet, when i test my speed on speedtest.com , it shows me 1.7mbps. I am pretty confused , ISP should give users what they stated , yeah a 2mbps. But i only recieved 200kbps and the speedtest shows 1.7mbps which makes me confused even further. So i started googling and found out that it is related to something called VPN compression? can anyone explain to me how these things works? why am i getting much much lower speed than i have subscribe to. (I am using a D-Link DSL-2750 U modem) Thanks.

• Why it's not possible to compile on a different OS than end-user OS [closed]

  I was trying to compile a php extension on Windows and ran into some trouble. I then thought it was possible to do the compilation for Windows on Linux, but turned out that wasn't possible. Can someone explain to me why compiling has to be done on the same OS? I'm trying to understand this topic, specifically because if I want to distribute something, does that mean I have to compile it on all these OSs (Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Linux, Mac, etc. etc. etc.) So what makes it not possible to compile for one OS on another? Is it the kernel or what?

  I'm very new in networking and I'm trying to setup my network as follow [ISP Modem/Router/Switch] + --- + {fxp0} [Linux Firewall] {fxp1} + --- + {??} [Cisco Router 1921] {GE 0/0} + --- + [Cisco Switch] + ... Servers {GE 0/1} + --- + [Cisco Switch] + ... Servers My questions are, Since I'm using both GE 0/0 and GE 0/1 ports to connect to switch, how can I connect my Linux Firewall (Port fxp1) to my Cisco Router? I know the USB and Console port are for configuration, can I use AUX port to connect my firewall (if so is it consider a right way)? • Linux Mint loses Window Focus

  I recently installed Linux Mint 13 64bit with Cinamon Desktop and run into a weird problem. It's about losing Mouse-Focus if more than one Window are open. For Example, I open up Chromium, play around a little bit, and then, if I try to open any Programms from the Taskbar, I cannot click on it. It seems that Chromium won't free his Focus. Another Example, if I open two Windows (e.g. Chromium and a Terminal) and I work with Chromium, then click into the Terminal I get no Focus to it. Sorry, its a bit hard to explain.

• Colors less saturated in Snow Leopard Finder, Preview & Safari than in Chrome -- why?

  If I look at the picture here in Safari, Preview or the finder, the shades of blue are significantly different than if I look at the picture in Google Chrome (they are less saturated than in Chrome). Since I am a photographer and need to prepare pictures for publication online, I need to know what a jpeg should really look like, in order to color-correct it. I have an excellent Eizo monitor that is correctly calibrated. If I open the same image in Photoshop CS3, I get the Chrome colors if I use Monitor RGB under view proof setup, and I get the Safari colors if I use Macintosh RGB. Can anyone explain the difference between these two settings, and the difference between Safari and Chrome? Which colors are correct? Photos that I prepared under Windows (during the past five years) now seem washed out in the Apple Finder and Preview, even though I had correctly prepared them. Is there a setting on the Macintosh for color calibration, besides the monitor calibration control panel?

• Flow of packets in network

  I can't visualize in my mind the network traffic flow. eg. If there are 15 pc's in a LAN When packet goes from router to local LAN, do it passes all the computers? Does it go to the ethernet card of every computer and those computers accept the packet based on their physical address? To which pc the packet will go first? To the nearest to the router? What happens if that first pc captures that packet(though it is not for it)? What happens when a pc broadcast a message? Do it have to generate 14 packets for all the pc's or only one packet reach to all pc's? If it is one packet and captured by first pc, how other pc's can get that? I can't imagine how this traffic is exactly flows? May be my analogy is completely wrong. Can anybody explain me this?

  I have a MacBook Pro and I'm going to buy a Boxee Box. I have access to wireless internet, but it's slow and out of my control. So my question is, what is the best way for both devices to get internet access, and the Boxee Box to get SMB access to the Mac, when only the Mac is connected to the wireless internet? • Firefox - bizarre bug

  So... this happens to my Firefox browser in like 5 days after I install it. After I reinstall it behaves normal. It doesn't display all sites like this. Same site on Explorer looks as expected. Restarting the browser doesn't seem to help. I do have installed 2 plugins or add-ons (Adblock & VideoHelper) but I'm almost sure this doesn't explain it. and I didn't messed with the settings. So... anyone?

  Hoping that somebody can help us understand this behavior. We've got a bunch of daemontools services under /etc/service/. One of the services controls apache, and the run script has this in it. exec envdir /var/lib/supervise/wwwproxy/env setuidgid root bash <<-BASH ulimit -n 8192 # also increase the running user's file descriptor limit exec apache2 -f /path/to/demo_apache2.conf -D FOREGROUND BASH We were having the problem that svc -d /etc/service/* actually had the effect of restarting all the services, it didn't take them down. We finally tracked it down to that one service, and found that svc -d /etc/service/apache2 would bring up any other service was down, including itself. Changing FOREGROUND to NO_DAEMONIZE fixes the behavior, but we'd really like to understand what's going on. Can anybody explain why an svc -d on one service would bring an other service up? Thanks for any clue you can offer.

• How do I take some RAM and use it towards Dedicated video memory for my Nvidia graphics card?

  I have a Nividia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card (so it's quite old), it only gets 64MB of dedicated memory by default. I went into the bios and see if I can increase it, but it wouldn't let me. However, from the Nividia control panel I see I have up to 1071MB of total available graphics memory. I'm not sure what that means and I'm not sure how I can harness this memory and use some RAM for my graphics card. Can someone explain if this is possible and if so, how?

• SBS 2008 reinstall on new machine

  We purchased a single license on Windows Small Business Server 2008 for a medical office, and soon after a power fault caused the server to overload, destroying the power supply and motherboard. I reinstalled on a new server, and have the domain up and running again, but under system properties it tells me I still need to activate windows, and that the product key currently entered is invalid for activation. I've been trying to figure out how to get in touch with Microsoft to explain the situation and get a new activation key issued without having to pay for another license which we can't afford, but the online documentation hasn't been particularly clear on the subject. Does anyone know how to do that, or if I do need the activation key to continue using SBS 2008? (It currently tells me I have 56 days left to activate) Any tips would be appreciated. I'm not strictly a computer guy and I'm feeling a little lost.

  Before I ask question, I've searched but only found ways of copy and paste "formatted cell". That's not what I need. I want to use an example to explain my requirement: There are 2 cells in a sheet. Cell_A's text is "aaaaabbbbb", and "aaaaa" is green, and "bbbbb" is red. Cell_B's text is "ccccc" and "ccccc" is black. I want to copy and paste "bbbbb" from Cell_A to Cell_B and keep "bbbbb" in red. But in my environment(Office 2007), "bbbbb" is changed to black as "ccccc", the default format of Cell_B. Is there an easy way to implement my requirement?

• Why some recovery tools are still able to find deleted files after I purge Recycle Bin, defrag the disk and zero-fill free space?

  As far as I understand, when I delete (without using Recycle Bin) a file, its record is removed from the file system table of contents (FAT/MFT/etc...) but the values of the disk sectors which were occupied by the file remain intact until these sectors are reused to write something else. When I use some sort of erased files recovery tool, it reads those sectors directly and tries to build up the original file. In this case, what I can't understand is why recovery tools are still able to find deleted files (with reduced chance of rebuilding them though) after I defragment the drive and overwrite all the free space with zeros. Can you explain this? I thought zero-overwritten deleted files can be only found by means of some special forensic lab magnetic scan hardware and those complex wiping algorithms (overwriting free space multiple times with random and non-random patterns) only make sense to prevent such a physical scan to succeed, but practically it seems that plain zero-fill is not enough to wipe all the tracks of deleted files. How can this be?

• Remote Desktop to a user while still logged on

  Is there a way to connect remotely to another user while there is a user still on the same PC. So one PC with users and both of them logged in at the same time, one locally and one remotely? Sorry i didn't explain my question very well, I don't mean 2 users viewing the same screen. I mean 2 user accounts. Say UserA is sitting at the desk on his account. and then UserB is on his account account but it remotely connecting to it. So they both have different desktops in front on their respective screens.
